AbstractThis study investigated the direct compression properties of Eurycoma longifolia Jack tablets using binary mixtures such as microcrystalline cellulose (mcc) and κ-carrageenan (carr). The mixtures were compacted to various compression pressures ranging from 7.5 to 74 MPa at a constant compression speed of 5 mm/min. The tensile strengths of the tablets were determined by a diametral compression test. A linear relationship between the tensile strength and the compression pressure was observed under the conditions of the test; hence, the slopes of the data were obtained by fitting linear trend lines. This paper shows that binary mixtures of 30% mcc and 70% Eurycoma longifolia Jack give the highest values for constant (a slope) compared with the other binary mixtures of both binders. Thus, this approach can be used to develop formulations for Eurycoma longifolia Jack tablets.

Eurycoma longifolia (EL) is a species that have economical benefit as medicinal ingredients for human health. This species grows in tropical forest areas with high rainfall. Research on the ecology of EL has been done a lot, but research related to ethnotaxonomic, bioecology that includes morphology, ecology, and the association of EL with other plants hasn’t been done much. This study aim to analyze the bioecology of EL plant. The method is literature study, which is looking for literature on the results of research that has been carried out related to EL. The results showed that EL has long been known by the communities of Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia with several local names. This plant is also associated with other plants around where it grows, one of which is kempas (Koompassia malaccensis). Based on the results of literature review, research on natural regeneration of EL hasn’t been done much. Therefore, there is a need for research related to the natural regeneration of EL. In addition, it is necessary to conduct research related to the characteristics of the place to grow for optimal cultivation of EL. Thus, the preservation of EL in the future can be maintained.

Pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia) has the potential to be developed as antihypertensive, antipyretic, aphrodisiacs and health supplements. The use of E. longifolia as a traditional medicine needs to be pursued in the form of more effective and appropriate formulation. The capsule preparations are easy to make and cancover the bitter taste of E. longifolia. Clinical trials in this study use design pre-post treatment in healthy humans. Subjects used were male - healthy men and healthy women who met inclusion criteria and were subjected with formulated capsule for 14 days. The study resulted capsule formula comprising of the ethanolic extract of E. longifolia 300 mg, vivapur 101 300 mg, 58 mg maydis starch, aerosil 3%, talc 2%, and Mg stearate 1%. The results showed that the capsule of E. longifolia did not affect the value of heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature and weight (P > 0.05), based on paired t-test, but they causes a decrease in blood pressure of healthy human. The ethanol extract of E. longifolia caused vasodilation of blood vessels that can be used in antihypertensive therapy.

Background: High fat diets are known to cause a positive fat balance and consequently to the accumulation of adipose mass, this diet does not seem to stimulate fat oxidation in the same way in obese and lean subjects. HFD was an inducing factor for ICAM-1 expression in the aorta of Wistar rats. HFD effect on ICAM-1 seems to be time dependent. ICAM-1 is one of the first events in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. HFD up-regulated Cav-1, regulated expression other biomarker in HFD is eNOS. Recent studies showed that E. longifolia Jack protected HFD animal model from atherosclerosis based on the reduce atherosclerotic plaque size and formation HFD-rats treated with E. longifolia Jack. Objective: To prove that Eurycoma longifolia has anti inflammatory effect on endothelial cell blood vessels of Sprague Dawley rat with high fat diet.Method: Study design was experimental study, by used Randomized Post Test only Control Group Design with Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the differences among groups and followed by a Mann Whitney test. Treatment is ethanolic or water extract of Eurycoma longifolia Jack, and out come are sICAM-1 and eNOS levels. Thirty Sprague Dawley (SD) Rat, were divided into 6 groups. C(-) was SD group, C(+) was group with HFD, X1 (SD treated with EL dosage 10 mg/kg), X2 (SD treated with EL dosage 15 mg/kg), X3 (HFD treated with EL dosage 10 mg/kg), X4 (HFD treated with EL dosage 15 mg/kg).

The root of pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia, Jack) is one of plant from Indonesia known as aphrodisiac. The study about its standardized extract as aphrodisiac was show increasing libido, testosterone level, FSH and LH on male rats. This study was conducted to evaluate testosterone level and histopathological changes of the testes of male rats of standardized extract of pasak bumi root. There are 50 old male rats which ages 3-4 months old divided to five groups. Group I as negative control was administered aquadestilata. Group II as positive control was administered testosterone (Andriol®). Group III, IV and V ware given standardized extract of pasak bumi root at the dose 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight Respectively. The extract was given orally twice a day for six days and forty nine days and then the testes was taken out on 7th and 50th day. The histopathological of the testes was evaluated using quantitative parameter by the presence of testes weight, number and diameter of Leydig cells. Testosterone level was taken on 7th and 50th day used ELISA method. The results were analyzed using parametric test, one way ANOVA (P<0,05), post hoc Dunnet (2-sided) (P < 0,05). The result of this study shows that the standardized extract of pasak bumi root was not effect on histopathological changes of the testes but it could increased the level of testosterone m at the dose 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight.  Key word : Eurycoma longifolia, Jack, aphrodisiac, histopathological testes testosteron

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in men and has become the sixth leading cause of death in males worldwide. Eurycoma longifolia Jack root has active compounds, namely, quassinoids, eurycomanone, and canthine, which have potential as detoxicants, free radical antioxidants, and anticancer. AIM: This study aimed to analyze the potential of the active compounds in E. longifolia Jack root in induce apoptosis in the prostate adenocarcinoma PC-3 cells. METHODS: E. longifolia root active compounds were obtained by extracting them using ethanol solvent. The culture of prostate cancer PC-3 cell line was obtained from androgen-independent prostate adenocarcinoma with bone metastasis use as subject. Examination of the potency of E. longifolia root extract was conducted by observing the cells undergoing apoptosis with TUNEL assay. RESULTS: One-way ANOVA test showed that the increase in apoptotic cells was associated proportionally with the concentration levels of E. longifolia root extract and showed a significant difference (α < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The higher the dose of E. longifolia root extract, the higher will be the apoptotic level of adenocarcinoma cells PC3. E. longifolia extract is potentially used in the treatment of prostate cancer by inducing apoptotic mechanisms.
