Manufacturing sector of Pakistan accounts for 19.1 percent of GDP and is the second largest sector of the economy. It grew by 8.4 percent during 2007 as against 10 percent last year. In the manufacturing sector, large scale manufacturing (LSM), plays a vital role and accounts for approximately 70 percent of overall manufacturing [Economic Survey of Pakistan (2006-07)]. During 2006-07 relatively slower pace of expansion exhibits signs of moderation on accounts of higher capacity utilisation, difficulties in the textile sector and lower than expected scale of operations of oil refineries. A number of other factors have also contributed to the low pace of expansion in manufacturing including zero percent growth in raw cotton production which is a critical input for the textile industry, vegetable ghee and cooking oil which comprise about 5.5 percent of the LSM sector, showed uninspiring performance due to unparalleled rise in international palm and soybean oil prices. The performance of the automobile sector has been far less impressive this year as compared to previous five years due to a fall in domestic demand for cars on account of increasing auto financing rates. The higher imports of used cars in the beginning of fiscal year 2006-07 also affected the performance of domestic auto mobile sector.

Indian textile industry can be broadly classified into the organised sector comprising mechanized spinning and composite mills and the unorganized sector comprising power looms and handlooms. Textile sector generates largest employment next only to agriculture. Over 50 percent of the employees are women who help to sustain the family income. The garment industry alone provides employment to more than 4 million workers and   supports the people working in ancillary units.

The high growth of the textile industry in Indonesia and advances in the textile sector have led to the emergence of many small and medium industries in the textile sector and textile production. The large number of garment industries that have sprung up has led to increasingly fierce competition in the garment industry. The independent variables in this study are product quality (X1), Price (X2), Location (X3), and Promotion (X4). The theory used in this research is marketing management theory. The dependent variable in this study is purchase intention (Y1). This study was conducted to determine the effect of four independent variables on convection buying interest. The object of this research is the garment industry between Surabaya and Gresik. The data collection method was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 384 respondents. Research respondents came from a sample that has been determined using the purposive sampling technique. The data in this study were obtained from questionnaires distributed online, to be analyzed using the SPSS data processing application with multiple linear regression analysis equation models. The results showed that all independent variables had an effect on the dependent variable. Garment vendor Dira Ashesh is expected to improve product quality, price, location, and promotion to increase consumer buying interest.

The textile sector has become an indispensable part of the Turkish economy. The sewing machine is a long-lasting and easy-to-use tool widely used in the garment industry, which is a branch of the textile industry. The sewing machine is an indispensable production tool for the textile industry and sewing machine selection is a significant decision for the production performance of textile companies. Selecting an appropriate sewing machine increases production performance, while selecting an improper one reduces production performance. The sewing machine selection problem is a typical machine selection issue. Many criteria, such as cost, productivity, safety etc. are considered in the machine selection. Therefore, MCDM methods are applicable to solve the machine selection problem. This study develops an integrated grey MCDM model including Grey AHP and ROV-G to select the most appropriate sewing machine for an apparel textile company.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of China’s trade agreement and foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to Nigeria with special reference to the manufacturing sector utilizing the following key economic performance indicators: inflation, unemployment, income and gross domestic product, to name a few. Since the turn of the millennium, China has enjoyed a substantial presence in the African continent. In fact, the country has signed bilateral agreements with Angola, South Africa and Sudan to name a few. Recently, China established its West African trade hub in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, to be strategically positioned. The results of the study revealed conclusively that although China’s investments over the years have benefited the Nigerian economy and its various firms in the manufacturing sector, the agreement signed by both countries ultimately needs to be reexamined to ensure equity. Design/methodology/approach – To thoroughly analyze the effects of China’s investments in Nigeria, this study was carried out in two phases. The first analysis of this study is anchored on a “before/after” framework based on descriptive statistical analysis of the selected economic performance indicators chosen from selected cross-national data. Accordingly, the time frame for this study runs from 1993-2012 which roughly corresponds to the era when China commenced significant investments in Nigeria. Second, employees, policymakers and individuals in the manufacturing/textile industries were interviewed. Furthermore, participation from federal as well as local government agency staff members was solicited using the Delphi technique. Findings – Empirically, the results conclusively reveal China’s dominance in the manufacturing and textile sectors in Nigeria. In other words, at face value, China’s investments are ultimately good for the Nigerian economy. However, at a micro-level analysis, the researcher examined the human factor, that is, the families of former and current employees, abandoned businesses/factories and a decaying textile industry that was once vibrant. Originality/value – To the knowledge of the researcher, this is the first study attempting to assess the impact of the rise of China on the Nigerian economy by combining key economic performance indicator in tandem with face-to-face interviews and the Delphi technique.

The paper focuses on micro-regional structures in the Northern Bohemia, for which the tradition of industrial production is typical. In the case of the studied Děčín and Česká Lípa regions, in the past it was mainly a light processing industry. The micro-regions were defined on the basis of daily commuting data. Firm accounting data available in publicly available financial statements of companies were used to evaluate economic performance. From the relative indicators, value added labor productivity and the average monthly wage were used for the analysis. Surprisingly, an average high economic performance of the manufacturing industry was found in the monitored geographical structures. However, relatively low in the strongest industry, ie. in the automotive industry, which contributed most to the reindustrialisation of the Česká Lípa region. Ie. that foreign investment did not necessarily play a comprehensively positive role here. The typical textile industry in the Děčín region has practically completely disappeared and the whole region shows significant deindustrialisation tendencies.
