For an entire school year 24 seventh-grade classes were taught problem-solving strategies by teachers with special training. In 14 of the classes the instruction was supplemented by calculators. Each problem-solving group performed significantly (p<.05) better than a control group of 18 classes on two of five problem-solving tests. The calculator group scored significantly higher than the control group on attitude toward problem solving and as well as the other two groups on paper-and-pencil computation. Responses to a teacher questionnaire indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the program.

This study aimed at measuring the effectiveness of Zahorik Model in the acquisition of listening and speaking skills in the light of the motivation toward learning Arabic, among the seventh grade students in Jordan. The subjects of this study were selected purposely from the seventh grade students of a high school in Amman-Jordan. Two classes were selected randomly, one with (26) students, was assigned as an experimental group, where the other of (26) students, was assigned as a control group. Two tests were developed, one for the listening skill, and the other one for the speaking skill. A scale to measure the motivation toward learning Arabic was also developed. All validity and reliability indicators were obtained for these instruments. The results showed statistical differences in listening and speaking skills, for seventh graders, attributed to the method of teaching in favor of the experimental groups. The result also showed statistical differences in the speaking skill attributed to the interaction between the method and motivation toward learning Arabic, but showed no statistical differences in listening skill attributed to the interaction between the method and motivation toward learning Arabic. A set of recommendations were concluded in the light of these findings.

This article discusses the final written results of a research project carried out in a number of first-year forms in three Dutch schools for secondary education. In each of the three schools the research project offered a light-weight extra listening programme in class A, and a light-weight extra reading programme in class B, while the regular programme for French was carried out in class C, which served as a control group. At the end of the school year the pupils' reading and listening ability, grammatical knowledge and vocabulary (receptive as well as productive) were evaluated in classes, and C. The general conclusion is that at the elementary level a light-weight extra listening programme does indeed lead to a high degree of listening ability when compared with the other groups. This holds good to an even slightly greater extent for the light-weight extra reading programme. Moreover, it appears that the extra reading programme also leads to a high degree of listening ability. The control groups who had the greatest amount of grammatical training, do indeed score highest in grammar tests, but this knowledge does not become apparent at all in the ability tests /reading and listening). The results of the vocabulary tests are hardly clear. It is probable that at this level reading promotes the acquisition of a productive vocabulary. In the ability test girls generally score higher than boys.

Problem-solving strategies are important parts of our middle school curriculum. Teaching strategies is an excellent way to help students attack mathematical, as well as other, problems. Such strategies include guessing and checking, simplifying the problem, building a model, developing a systematic list or a chart, working backward, drawing a picture, and looking for a pattern. Our students spend an entire school year in the eighth grade to learn to use these problem- solving strategies to solve problems that would otherwise require sophisticated mathematical tools if they could be solved at all by mathematical methods. This experience promotes the development of intuition and number sense in young students.

This study was conducted to determine whether or not the jigsaw approach as a cooperative learning strategy can significantly improve the problem solving skills in physics of the First Year Pharmacy students of the University of the Immaculate Conception for School Year 2011-2012. The researchers used the quasi-experimental design and purposively chose one class with forty students to compose the experimental group and another class of the same size to form the control group. The students from the experimental group were supervised through the jigsaw approach for three weeks as they studied Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion. The test scores from the 50-multiple choice-item Physics Questionnaire (α = 0.90) were the data used in the study. Frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test were the statistical tools employed in the analyses of the data. Findings of the study revealed that the problem solving skills in physics of the Pharmacy students were significantly improved by the jigsaw approach. The researchers also employed a focus group discussion for the triangulation of the method which validated that students who were subjected to jigsaw approach became more proficient, responsible, facilitative, and approachable as learners. The students felt that they needed to study not only for themselves but also for their group mates.
