The full life cycle of as large and complex a product as a ship consists of feasibility and requirements analysis from the design and production stages, through maintenance, upgrading, decommissioning, and demolition. Many design tasks need to be informed by the perspective of what will be needed over the ship's entire lifetime. The building of a ship is a very complicated process with many concurrently running activities. Given the complexity and enormity of shipbuilding projects, effective management, knowledge application, and strategy implementation to promote the value of a shipyard are important issues. Due to rapid development in information technology and the internet, many shipyards have already applied information systems to increase profits and improve their manufacturing methods. Knowledge management will also be easily accomplished by means of information technology. New technology must enable the prototyping of complex multimodel manufacturing systems to coordinate the design efforts of the multidisciplinary teams required to design manufacturing systems. In this paper, we discuss the combination of collaborative management methods with the advantages of the internet, the building up of a virtual knowledge-sharing environment in the construction process, the use of XML standard for storing full specification data, and how to proceed with such knowledge management activities. Technology can also enable the systematic integration of new design tools to easily upgrade new design domains and methodologies. Internet technologies and collaboration management together can increase the speed of knowledge sharing, allowing workers to get the right information at the right time.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is explore the relative effectiveness of people-based and information technology-based knowledge management (KM) strategies as implemented by principals in Hong Kong schools to facilitate and sustain Lesson Study for teachers’ knowledge sharing and internalization. Design/methodology/approach Data from 184 principals in Hong Kong were collected by a cross-sectional quantitative survey. Confirmatory factor analysis and reliability tests have been used to examine the constructed validity and reliability of the instrument. A structural equation model was applied to confirm the predictive effect of people-based and information technology-based KM strategies on teachers’ knowledge sharing and internalization through Lesson Study. Findings Results show that people-based KM strategy predicts knowledge sharing and internalization by and among teachers. However, while information technology-based knowledge management strategies predict teachers’ knowledge sharing, they do not predict how effectively they internalize knowledge. Practical implications Cultivating communities of practice, professional learning communities and mentoring schemes in schools can nurture a knowledge-sharing culture to facilitate and sustain Lesson Study for teacher learning. Institutionalizing an information technology system can help teachers to retrieve, share and store the school’s explicit knowledge. Originality/value The paper not only suggests school management strategies and practices for school leaders to facilitate and sustain Lesson Study, but also brings a new research dimension, KM, to the research area.

Following the rapid development of the Internet, e-commerce websites are widely used today for various goals. An essential point in the prosperity of these websites is their level of usability. Accordingly, measuring this usability is indispensable for these websites to check whether they are moving in the right path. Thus, in this article, the usability scores of five well-known online food-ordering websites in Iran have been evaluated using a novel fuzzy Kano method with respect to design parameters. In addition to assessing usability scores, the design parameters of these websites have been classified and reviewed in a detailed manner in order to determine the design priorities of these websites as one of the main results of this study. Data were gathered using a questionnaire with 190 respondents. Results demonstrated that Snappfood is the best online food-ordering website in Iran. In addition, sorting restaurants based on customer satisfaction score, using high-quality images of foods along with the image zooming feature, and the existence of complete information about foods and restaurants are the most effective and important design parameters of these types of websites according to the findings of this study.

The concept of knowledge sharing finds historical support in theories on the acquisition and creation of knowledge. While the key to knowledge sharing depends on frequent and regular social interaction, the recent rapid development of the Internet has enhanced much of the social interaction taking place among individuals at any time, at any place, and with any person. Through a review of the literature, this chapter defines online knowledge sharing, discusses the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors in explaining online knowledge behavior, explores the various forms of knowledge sharing in different online learning environments, and reviews the measurement of online knowledge sharing. The chapter also discusses online knowledge-sharing issues that should be addressed in future.

A progressive liberalization and deregulation of international trade, and the rapid development and diffusion of information and communication technology (IT) have fundamentally changed the global competitive dynamic environment (Ernst & Kim, 2002). Growing around these is a new information age economy whose fundamental sources of wealth are knowledge and communication rather than natural resources and physical labor (Kanter, 1994). The simultaneous development of the knowledge economy (Dunning, 2000) and the information technology economy (Varian, Farrell, & Shapiro, 2004) provides both opportunity and challenge for the organizations, and also requires us to develop from a comprehensive perspective by combining knowledge management with the information technology strategy. In the knowledge economy, the importance of knowledge diffusion dynamics has been increasingly recognized in development economics over the last decade (World Bank, 1999). Knowledge diffusion can be defined as the adaptations and applications of knowledge documented in scientific publications and patents (Crane, 1972). Knowledge diffusion is part of the knowledge management process, realizing the proliferation of knowledge and information among different individuals across time and space (Chen & Hicks, 2004). According to the extent of knowledge diffusion, the knowledge diffusion lifecycle can be divided into four stages, including incubation, nurture, promotion, and popularization (Lang & Yuan, 2004). In this lifecycle, knowledge diffusion refers to promoting the innovation and core competence formation, so how to accelerate the knowledge diffusion has become an important issue for organizations. The development of information technology establishes a solid base to accelerate knowledge diffusion. IT and related organizational innovations provide effective mechanisms for constructing flexible infrastructures that can link together and coordinate economic transactions at distant locations (Broadbent, Weill, & St. Clair, 1999). In essence, IT fosters the development of leaner, meaner, and more agile production systems that cut across firm boundaries and national borders. The underlying vision is that accelerating knowledge diffusion can speed up the dissemination of information technology. Knowledge diffusion is an essential content of the business strategy (Borghoff & Pareschi, 2003). However, existing theories of both information technology and knowledge have not specified the information technology strategy in the knowledge diffusion. This article introduces the information technology strategy in knowledge diffusion based on the knowledge cycle theory. The article describes how to advance knowledge diffusion by using the matched information technology strategy in a different knowledge diffusion lifecycle. The article shows how firms innovate and research to imitate knowledge and improve the diffusion of knowledge.

As Peter Drucker (2000) has pointed out, the foundation of the 21st century organization is no longer money or capital or even technology; it is knowledge. In order for that knowledge to create value, it must be shared. Some discussions of knowledge sharing in organizations and, indeed, some knowledge management initiatives seem to assume that given the right technology and/or the proper culture, knowledge will flow readily throughout the firm. Technologies that facilitate knowledge sharing (e.g., databases, intranets, and groupware) currently exist and are constantly improving. But technologies are only part of the knowledge management equation.

The knowledge management (KM) literature in general is short on field evidence concerning knowledge sharing (KS) practices in project management settings, where knowledge occupies a central place. In addition, research on KS enablers and barriers has largely overlooked the fact that individual characteristics may influence the choice to share knowledge. This research explored departmental KS practices, enablers and barriers at a Middle-Eastern project management company. It also investigated the influence of a number of individual characteristics on KS, enablers and barriers. The findings confirm that Knowledge is partially shared within departments, and the employees have varying views on KS enablers and barriers. Although many do not perceive organizational enablers as catalysts for KS, they somewhat believe that the information technology (IT) enablers do facilitate KS. The employees, however, do not believe that the identified individual, organizational and IT barriers hinder KS. In addition, gender, age, department type and job type have varying effects on the perceived KS practices, organizational enablers, and IT enablers and barriers. These findings and their implications are further discussed in the paper.

Today, Knowledge Management (KM) is becoming a popular approach for improving organizational innovation, but whether encouraging knowledge sharing will lead to a better innovative working behaviour of employees is still a question. This study aims to identify the factors of KM affecting the innovative working behaviour of Information Technology (IT) employees in Vietnam. The research model involves three elements: attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control affecting knowledge sharing, and then, on innovative working behaviour. The research method is the quantitative method. The survey was conducted with 202 samples via the five-scale questionnaire. The analysis results show that knowledge sharing has a positive impact on the innovative working behaviour of IT employees in Vietnam. Besides, attitude and perceived behavioural control are confirmed to have a strong positive effect on knowledge sharing, but the subjective norm has no significant impact on knowledge sharing. Based on this result, recommendations to promote knowledge sharing and the innovative work behaviour of IT employees in Vietnam are made.

Le nombre de réfugiés dans le monde ne cesse d’augmenter. Le Haut commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés estime le nombre record de déplacés forcés en 2011 à 43,7 millions. En France, plus de 57 000 ont introduit une demande de protection à l’Office français de protection des réfugiés et apatrides. Les Somaliens constituent en France l’un des groupes en constante augmentation en raison de la crise humanitaire, politique et sécuritaire qui secoue leur pays. De nombreuses études ont été menées dans le cadre de l’accueil des réfugiés en France et de la fragilisation du droit d’asile. Les recherches s’intéressant à analyser les usages des technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) tels que internet et la télévision par les réfugiés restent embryonnaires. Cette présente recherche tente de combler cet écart en contribuant à l’analyse des usages d’internet et de la télévision par les réfugiés Somaliens pendant leur installation en France. Abstract The number of refugees on a global scale is increasing. In fact, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that in 2011 there were 43.7 million forcibly displaced persons reaching a worldwide record. In France, more than 57 thousand persons applied for protection to the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons. Somalis are among the refugee groups on the rise in France due to the humanitarian, political and security crises that shook their country. Numerous studies have been conducted in the context of the reception of refugees in France and the weakening of the right to asylum. This study aims to analyze the uses of Information Technology and Communication (ICT), in particular Internet and television, by refugees as such studies remains limited. This research study strives to fill this gap by contributing to the analysis of the usage of the Internet and television by Somali refugees during their settlement in France.

Information technology is one of the assets of a company or organization that is important for its development, with the rapid development of technology today, technology must always be updated. One of the roles of information technology is the application of knowledge management. Knowledge Management is a system that is able to improve and manage knowledge information in companies or agencies that apply knowledge management. In this study, it focuses on implementing a knowledge management system in the Quality Assurance of the Faculties at Satya Wacana Christian University. This research is based on the fact that PMF institutions still use manual methods in data archiving, the purpose of this study is to design a web application that is useful for archiving PMF data to make it more effective and efficient. In this study, the KMS (Knowledge Management System) is applied, and uses the Knowledge Management System Life Cycle method which consists of several process stages consisting of infrastructure evaluation, KMS design analysis and development, and evaluation at the final stage. The result of this research is a useful data archiving web application for PMF. It is hoped that PMF will be more efficient in data archiving.
