This article reviews the Mid-Career Development Chinese Language course (MCDCL) funded by the British Inter-university China Centre, a project funded from various public sources in the UK. The discussion focuses on how and why the MCDCL course has adopted the blended learning construct and with what outcomes. Using two frameworks for blended learning – the Community of Inquiry and the Sloan-C Pillars – it offers a thorough examination of the MCDCL course, and discusses the results of a survey which was devised to collect feedback from participants on the course. The article concludes that the MCDCL course throws up particular challenges for the blended learning concept as a whole. A detailed evaluation highlights areas for attention ranging from how the course is organised and workloads are balanced, to the approach of teachers in their level of involvement in distance learning, and the overall management of the course with regard to the use of technology, cost-effectiveness and a host of other considerations.

Nowadays, the virtual learning environment has become an ideal tool for professional self-development and bringing courses for various learner audiences across the world. There is currently an increasing interest in researching the topic of learner dropout and low completion in distance learning, with one of the main concerns being elevated rates of occurrence. Therefore, the early prediction of learner withdrawal has become a major challenge, as well as identifying the factors, which contribute to this increasingly occurring phenomenon. In that regard, this manuscript presents a framework for withdrawal prediction model for the data from The Open University, one of the largest distance learning institutions. For that purpose, we start by pre-processing the dataset and tackling the challenge of discretization process and unbalanced data. Secondly, this paper identifies the semantical issues of raw data by introducing new behavioural indicators. Finally, we reckon on machine learning algorithms for withdrawal prediction model to understand the lack of learners' commitment at an early stage.

Due to the global pandemic caused by the spread of coronavirus disease, the educational process has experienced very significant transformations – in the pedagogical process both pupils and parents, teachers and education policy makers have encountered essential challenges and an unprecedent experience The aim of the research, based on the theoretical study of the distance learning concept and empirical research, and finding out the teachers’ attitude towards distance learning, is to describe the Latvia experience in distance learning during COVID-19 conditions. The research's methodology is based on teacher survey, regulatory analysis, and concessional analysis. The study highlights problems in the context of distance learning and makes a significant contribution to further research. Analysing the results of the empirical study and outcomes of the survey, it has been concluded that teachers feel psycho-emotional and physiological overload due to distance education. Keywords: distance learning; education; pedagogical process; pupil; teacher

This paper is an investigation into compensation practices for faculty developing and teaching distance learning courses. The research divides itself into two basic lines of inquiry: direct and indirect compensation (including royalties, training, and professional recognition). Also, economic models for distance learning are examined with a view towards understanding faculty compensation within attempts to reduce labor costs. The primary questions this research attempts to answer are: What are the current policies and practices in higher education for compensating faculty who develop and teach distance learning format courses? Will the increased use of distance learning format courses alter overall labor conditions for American faculty? If so, how? Although information is limited, it is found that faculty work in both developing and teaching distance learning format courses tends thus far in this early stage to be seen as work-for-hire under regular load with little additional indirect compensation or royalty arrangements.

This qualitative inquiry explores how, during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lithuania (European Union), the stakeholders in education system – university teachers, general education teachers, students and children’s parents – coped with the encountered challenge and what was important to them under changed conditions. This paper uses a communication management objective to describe how participants in the education system respond to the emerging distance learning situation and its challenges. The phenomenographic research approach was chosen to carry out the qualitative study. The 37 interviews from higher education teachers, university students, school teachers and parents of minor school-aged children were conducted during the early stage of COVID-19 quarantine. The research allows concluding that after a successful transition to distance learning the dimensions of communion and supportive collaboration acquired importance among stakeholders in education. Starting new activities, a need for communion and mobilization for joint activities under the crisis situation emerged. The research showed that the adaptation period was necessary at the beginning of the new activity. Competent leadership was expected from the teacher also advance preparation of all the actors in education process was needed. The data do offer a window into the dynamics of online teaching in crisis situation and experiences in new activity that are key to success.

In the early stage of software development, design complexity metrics are considered as useful indicators of a software testing effort and quality attributes. However, existing works made great efforts in establishing standardized metrics to evaluate the complexity of software, but there have not been significant efforts in finding the correlations among the cognitive complexity metrics. To address this challenge, this paper reviewed cognitive complexity metrics which includes: Improved Cognitive Complexity Measure (ICCM), New Cognitive Complexity of Program (NCCoP) and Modified Cognitive Complexity Measure (MCCM). The metrics were employed to analyse some selected sorting algorithms implemented in a procedural C programming language. The relationships among the aforementioned metrics were calculated using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient Method. The results of the comparative examination of ICCM, NCCoP and MCCM revealed that ICCM had more responsive measurements and that there exists a strong relationship among the specified metrics. ICCM had the strongest significance among the considered metrics based on the efforts in comprehending the information contained in the sorting algorithm codes. The study contributed significantly to understanding and addressing the complexity emanating from software development.

The aim of the article is to describe the methods of the 11-grade students’ teaching for passing the National Exam on the Russian Language in the distance learning condition. The rules of communicative, reflective and system-activity approaches, distance-learning concept on the basis of the computer technologies in Russia of E. S. Polat are used in the work. The author depicts his own developed and time-tested algorithms of the group and individual forms of work with school children at social networks, at “VKontakte” to be exact, on the sites such as “I’ll pass the National Exam”, e. i. “Reshu EGE”, in the system of the web service “Google Classroom” and using the platform for the online conferences Zoom. The article shows the efficiency of such work in the distance learning condition. Scientific value of the research includes the complex description of the method which was used by the author in the distance learning condition, which took place in March-June, 2020 during the pandemic (COVID-19). The article gives detailed description of the group-work and pair-work (session halls), use of personal and social chats for interviews, screen demonstrations and online textbooks, creation of the guides to the course topics, using the posts to motivate the schoolchildren, to control their actions and to give them information. In the result of the survey the author proves that the use of the method is not only aimed and gives high results, allows to make teaching interesting and qualified but also performs goals.

The paper presents the distance learning concept development by visualizing the work process of graphics machines. The basic goal is realized through the application development that includes machines simulations and their elements. A large number of simulations and explanations of the work process are included in the knowledge base. The concept is expanded to learning how to program machines so that the future operator can master significant knowledge that will enable him to engage in the production process quickly. The paper presents concrete types of machines for different printing techniques and machines for making packaging prototypes. For the realization of objects visualizations, modern software tools were used, which finally provided good quality.
