This article analyzes self-reports of teacher perceptions regarding personal responsibility in school motivation. Participants were teachers-in-training and those currently working in Primary Education (n=773) in the Araucanía Region, Chile. Four different profiles were identified from cluster analysis, where responsibility was seen as personal, or shared; and where school motivation was represented as continuous, or discrete. Results show that respondents tend to place responsibility for school motivation within the family for the most effective exercise of the profession. For practicing teachers, school motivation tended to be conceived of as discrete moments, of shared responsibility; while future teachers were significantly more likely to see motivation as a continuous process, of personal (teacher) responsibility. Given that teachers have the educational tools and opportunity to most effectively motivate school learning, it is urgent to generate strategies where responsibility is robustly assumed by teachers themselves; and as a continuous process beyond a specific moment in the classroom.

This paper presents a model of the implementation of mediation in cases where a power disbalance between partners exists. The model includes relevant theoretical concepts which are important for understanding of violence phenomenon in the family, and the contemporary approaches to the work on balancing unequal power in relationships. In creating the model of family mediation in cases including violence, some basic concepts of mediation procedures are modified or adjusted (neutrality, confidentiality), as well as the concept of circular causality and complementary relationships from a systemic perspective. Implementation of interdisciplinary approach is proposed for efficient work on balancing the power in relations and using various working domains. The confession of violent behavior and the acceptance of personal responsibility by the offender, and the readiness of both sides to take part in restoration of a relationship are basic principles of restorative justice that is fundamental for victim- offender mediation. Therefore, those conditions are also necessary for a family mediation in cases including elements of violence, if the security for the victim is provided and guaranteed.

The abuse of over watching Television by our alumnae is a fact that worries all the educational community. Every day, the teachers observe how the alumnae, at all educational levels, follow patterns of behaviour, keeping values and reproducing roles that have been seen and defended by our television stations. This abuse leads to a series of implications, not only in the educational area, but in the family circle as well, in relational and social aspects. Our aim is to know the negative influence of this phenomena on a particular population, and to contrast the results with other investigations developed in other contexts. This study was initiated on a group of alumnae form the 2º term of primary education, in the province of Huelva.

This paper provides a rationale for viewing symptomatic child behavior in terms of a family systems perspective. In their clinical and consultation work, the authors have found that the family context provides the most constructive avenue for modifying problematic child behavior. The child brings to the school the repertoire of behaviors learned in the family, and the classroom becomes an avenue for the expression of these behaviors. School staff have the unique opportunity to take a leadership role with the families of children. The school can create a nonblaming environment where dialogue and mutual planning can take place between families and school personnel. In this way, the child is unburdened as the conveyor of information and values between the two systems. Changes in traditional school practices can be achieved: school psychologists can take on new roles, while principals and staff can learn new techniques and skills for relating to each other and for approaching family-based school learning problems.

Children are often the unintended victims of incarceration, and are frequently subjected to extreme hardship following the arrest of a parent, but their right to information is always compromised in the name of protection. Disclosure of incarceration can be equally challenging for both the family caregivers and the children. This paper presents the data from interviews about disclosure of incarceration, looking at how 10 caregiver–child dyadic pairs interacted and handled disclosure in the process. Disclosure is taken as a continuous process requiring the caregivers and the children to negotiate and make sense of it, rather than a static, one-off decision. Three dimensions of protection have been identified (i.e., protection from future blame, protection of the child, and protection of the inmate), together with the intent to use the disclosure for educational purposes. Although there was not a case where the children protested having limited or no information, they varied in their responses. A lack of interest in asking for essential information and intentional avoidance of the topic of parent’s incarceration have been observed in some children. Self-regulated submission by the child is a result of many factors, including a tacit demand to acknowledge parental authority and a caring intent not to add to the caregiver’s burdens. This article also highlights implications and recommendations for changing professional practice and policy guidelines to promote children’s rights and their healthy growth amidst the challenges of life.

SynopsisEffective community treatment of schizophrenia involves not merely the removal of florid symptoms, but restoration of effective social role functioning. The efficacy of a family management approach is compared with an individual approach of similar intensity in terms of its impact on the patient's social adjustment after a florid episode of schizophrenia. Clinical reports, patient self-reports, and interviews with the family members of 36 patients, who were randomly assigned to family or individual management, demonstrated a consistent superiority for family management. The advantages for the family approach were sustained over a two-year period. The potential mechanisms through which the family approach may have achieved its greater efficacy are discussed from a multi-determined perspective.
