A field experiment was performed at Agricultural College, Bapatla, ANGRAU, Guntur during kharif season of 2020 to evaluate the efficacy of zinc nutrition on quality, yield and economics of sweetcorn. Experiment was carried out in Randomized Block Design and comprising of nine treatments with three replications. The results disclosed that application of recommended dose of fertilizers along with soil application of 10 kg ha-1 Zn EDTA + two foliar sprays of nano zinc @ 250 ppm at 20 & 40 DAS registered remarkably higher protein content (12.98%) and zinc content (34.59 ppm) in kernel which was considered to be superior over the remaining zinc management practices tried. Also, highest green cob (12,638 kg ha-1), green fodder (19,674 kg ha-1), stover yield (7,590 kg ha-1) and gross returns (₹ 1,93,360 ha-1) was recorded from the treatment with soil application of Zn EDTA @ 10 kg ha-1 + two foliar sprays of nano zinc @ 250 ppm at 20 & 40 DAS along with RDF over control. However, highest net returns (₹ 1,38,664 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (2.74) was recorded with RDF + ZnSO4 @ 25 kg ha-1 (Soil) + Nano ZnO @ 250 ppm at 20 and 40 DAS (Foliar spray). The effectiveness of Zn EDTA compared to ZnSO4 is responsible for the higher quality parameters and yield of sweetcorn but due to its higher cost, Net returns and B;C ratio are maximum for the plots treated with ZnSO4 making it more economically viable.

Background: Soils of North-Western Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) are deficient in zinc content which may lead to lower forage yield of cowpea. Henceforth, the adequate supply of zinc either through soil or foliar spray and selection of suitable cultivar of cowpea could enhance the fodder productivity.Methods: A field experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design during Kharif season, 2019 to assess the effect of different zinc management practices (control; 10 kg ZnSO4; 20 kg ZnSO4; 0.5% ZnSO4 foliar spray at 20 DAS; 0.5% ZnSO4 foliar spray at 20 and 40 DAS) on productivity and profitability of cowpea cultivars (C-152; MFC-08-14; MFC-09-1) and post-harvest fertility status of soil.Result: Cowpea cv. C-152 showed the highest growth attributes, green fodder yield, nutrient content as well as uptake and net returns. Among different zinc management practices, the application of 20 kg ZnSO4 as basal application or 0.5% ZnSO4 foliar spray at 20 and 40 DAS recorded significantly highest growth, green fodder yield, nutrient content as well as uptake and net returns. Significantly highest soil OC, available N, K and Zn were also noted under these treatments. It is inferred that cowpea cv. C-152 and application of either 20 kg ZnSO4 as basal or 0.5% ZnSO4 as foliar spray at 20 and 40 DAS were found the most productive and profitable approach and sustained the soil fertility status.

A field investigation was carried out to study the influence of zinc and iron micronutrients on the performance of rainfed castor, in Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Telangana state, India for three consecutive years during kharif 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14. There were nine treatments viz., Control (no micronutrient application); soil application of FeSO4 @ 15 kg ha-1; soil application of FeSO4 @ 25 kg ha-1; soil application of ZnSO4 @ 15 kg ha-1; soil application of ZnSO4 @ 25 kg ha-1; foliar application of 0.5% FeSO4 at 50 DAS; foliar application of 0.5% FeSO4 at 50 and 90 DAS; foliar application of 0.5% ZnSO4 at 50 DAS; foliar application of 0.5% ZnSO4 at 50 and 90 DAS and tested in randomized block design with three replications. The foliar application of ZnSO4 (0.5%) twice at 50 and 90 DAS resulted in significantly higher seed yield (1698 kg ha-1), higher gross returns (Rs. 54344 ha-1), net returns (Rs. 33501 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.60) over rest of the treatments. The seed yield improvement was to the tune of 54% over no micronutrient application. The uptake of major and micronutrients was greater when the crop received two sprays of ZnSO4 as compared to one spray of ZnSO4, two sprays of FeSO4 and soil application of either of the micronutrients. The castor bean crop responded to Zn better than Fe by producing 10.2% to 12.2% higher seed yield. Foliar spray was found superior to soil application in case of both the micronutrients.

Background: Integrated nutrient management is considered as one of the major tools in agricultural production worldwide. Occupying 3.5% of gross cropped area (GCA), maize accounts for 2.3% of total fertilizer consumption. Despite its soil status, little is known about the application and dosage of integrated nutrient in the experimental hybrid maize crop in the region. Any strategy against this nutrient deterioration must have a good knowledge of the composition and application of integrated nutrient source utilized. The field study aimed to study the integrated nutrient management in hybrid maize of this region to evaluate the performance in growth, yield and nutrient related problems.Methods: A Field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2018, at experimental farm, Department of Agronomy, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Tamilnadu. India. Thirteen treatments with three replications were laid out in randomized block design. The treatments combinations were T1: Recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) 135:62.5:50 kg N:P2O5:K2O ha-1, T2: RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) as soil application, T3: 75% RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) as soil application, T4: RDF + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) as foliar spray twice, T5: RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) foliar spray twice, T6: 75% RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) foliar spray twice, T7: RDF + Tracel (3.75kgha-1) foliar spray twice, T8: RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) foliar spray twice, T9: 75% RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) foliar spray twice, T10: RDF + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) first and Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) second foliar spray. T11: RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) first and Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) second foliar spray, T12: 75% RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) first and Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) second foliar spray, T13: RDF + water spray twice. The collected samples were statistically analyzed for cob length, cob diameter, grain no. /cob, grain yield, stover yield, available Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium and Post-harvest nutrient status of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Result: Our investigation in the maize hybrid crop has confirmed us with unique results. Among the treatments RDF + Beema green granules (25 kg ha-1) soil application + Uphaar (250gm ha-1) first and Tracel (3.75kg ha-1) second foliar spray (T11) was highly significant with increased yield and yield attributes and was best in gross and net returns too. The present work will be a contribution to the comprehensive study of the integrated nutrient management in hybrid maize.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of fortification of fodder maize var. African Tall with micronutrient zinc through ZnSO4 fertilizer application. The study involved fortification at different doses through soil application and foliar sprays at different stages of crop. Green fodder yields were highest at 50 kg ZnSO4 ha-1. Zinc content increased with increasing crop growth from knee high (18.9 mg kg-1) to fodder harvest (37.9 mg kg-1) with highest concentration at soil application of 50 ZnSO4 ha-1. Zinc fortification of 23% was observed when 50 kg of ZnSO4 was added through soil application while soil application of 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 along with two foliar sprays at knee high and tasseling showed on par yields. Foliar sprays complemented soil application but foliar application alone excluding soil application failed to show impact on yields. No significant effect of zinc was observed on quality parameters viz., crude protein, acid detergent fiber or neutral detergent fiber. The crude protein content though did not vary significantly, highest was observed when 50 kg ZnSO4 was applied as soil application. Zinc application significantly influenced Neutral detergent fiber at fodder harvest, on the contrary, acid detergent fiber was not effected at any stage of crop.

A field experiment was conducted during late Kharif (September-November) of the year 2018 at Eastern Block Farm, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to find out the effect of agronomic bio-fortification with zinc on physiological parameters, nutrient uptake, yield and economics of babycorn under irrigated condition. The field experiment was laid in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments comprised of T1: No zinc (control), T2: Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO4) at 25 kgha-1 as soil application, T3: ZnSO4 at 37.5 kgha-1 as soil application, T4: Foliar spray of ZnSO4 at 0.5% on 20 and 40 DAS, T5: Foliar spray of ZnSO4 at 1.0% on 20 and 40 DAS, T6: ZnSO4 at 25 kgha-1 as soil application + foliar spray at 0.5% on 20 and 40 DAS, T7 : ZnSO4 at 25 kgha-1 as soil application + foliar spray at 1.0% on 20 and 40 DAS, T8: ZnSO4 at 37.5 kgha-1 as soil application + foliar spray at 0.5% on 20 and 40 DAS, T9: ZnSO4 at 37.5 kgha-1 as soil application + foliar spray at 1.0% on 20 and 40 DAS. Babycorn hybrid G-5414 was used to experiment with a plant spacing of 45 cm x 25 cm. The results showed that the combined application of zinc sulphate @ 37.5 kgha-1 with 0.5% foliar spray at 20 and 40 DAS recorded significantly higher Crop Growth Rate (CGR) (31.07, 30.83) gcm-2day-1, Relative Growth Rate (RGR) (110.25, 31.67) mgg-1day-1 and Net Assimilation Rate (NAR) (9.65, 4.54) mgcm-2day-1 at 25-45 DAS and 45 DAS - harvest intervals respectively. NPK uptake was recorded higher in (T8) and green cob yield was recorded higher in (T9) at harvest stage. Green fodder yield and higher benefit cost ratio was obtained higher with soil application of zinc sulphate @ 37.5 kgha-1 with 0.5% foliar spray at 20 and 40 DAS.

The research was conducted at Beltari Sandhikharka-10, Arghakhanchi district to study about the effect of various doses of boron on growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) during off-season from February to June in 2020. Five treatments; B0 (control/no application), B1: 2kg/ha, B2: 4kg/ha, B3: 6kg/ha, B4: 8kg/ha which are the different doses of boron application were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves per plant leaf length and leaf breadth of largest leaf were recorded multiple times with 15 days interval. Days to curd initiation and Days from curd initiation to harvest were recorded by regular field observation. The yield parameters; curd weight with leaves, Marketable curd weight, average curd yield, incidence of hollowing were recorded during harvest. The economics from application of boron doses in cauliflower production was obtained in terms of cost of cultivation, gross returns, net returns, and benefit cost ratio. The result showed that the growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower were significantly affected by application of boron in which the value of these parameters was found significantly higher in B1 followed by other treatments. The average curd yield of cauliflower in B1 was found to be 12.39 mt/ha which was 48.92% higher than that of B0 with curd yield 8.32 mt/ha. Similarly, the net return was found significantly the highest in B1 and the lowest in B0. The result showed that application of boron in the range of 2-4 kg/ha is preferred to control and higher doses in respect of both productivity and economics.

Background: Yield of summer tomato do not always reach the full production potential. Improved management such as, training and pruning could improve the yield and fruit quality of tomatoes. The production of the healthy and improved quality tomato crop depends on various cultural practices like training systems as it prevents overcrowding for sunlight thus improves air circulation under humid and moist conditions where tomato plants are more prone to fungal diseases, avoids poor fruit set and assimilates competition. Methods: The study was carried out during kharif seasons of 2017 and 2018 with Solan Lalima variety, in the Research Farm of Dr. YSP UHF Nauni, Solan, HP to find out the response of plants to management practices on yield, quality and cost of production. The experiment consisting of two planting methods, three mulching treatments, two level of training system, laid out in randomized complete block design with three repetitions. Result: Plants trained to two stem gave the maximum fruit TSS (4.75 oB), ascorbic acid content (30.79 mg/100 g), lycopene content (5.84 mg/100 g) and shelf life (11.35 days). From the economics, it was apparent that tomato produced by the two stem training system exhibited better performance in terms of benefit cost ratio.

Background: Potato (Solanum tuberosum) popularly known as ‘The King of Vegetables’, has emerged as fourth most important food crop in the world after rice, wheat and maize. Indian vegetables basket is incomplete without potato as its, dry matter, edible energy and edible protein makes it nutritionally superior as well as staple food throughout the world. Methods: The experiment during 2016-2018 was laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications to study the effect of bed size on the yield and size of the tuber under different irrigation methods. Results: Maximum yield was obtained in 60cm bed (narrow bed size) whereas in irrigation system drip produced maximum yield. All quality parameters did not influence due to sowing method and irrigation system but chip recovery was more in drip irrigation than furrow system. Maximum yield through interaction was found in drip irrigated 105 cm triple row bed. Around 45-50 per cent water was saved through drip irrigation as compared to furrow irrigation. However, maximum benefit cost ratio was obtained in furrow irrigated 60cm bed size.

The present investigation was carried out to study the effect of off season soil management practices on yield and quality of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) cultivars. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Block Design with ten treatments in three replications consisted of five off-season land management treatments viz., fallow (S1), summer ploughing 2 times (S2), summer ploughing 1 time (S3), solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick for 40 days (S4) and black polyethylene film for 40 days (S5). It was tested with two popular cultivars viz., Curcuma longa -1 CL-1 (V1) and Curcuma longa-2 CL-2 (V2), collected from Erode and Chidambaram. Various yield components were recorded at the time of harvest and were analysed. The yield attributing characters viz., number, length, girth and weight of mother, primary and secondary rhizomes were recorded. The treatment where solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick was tested recorded the highest yield and yield attributing characters when compared to other treatments. The same treatment also exhibited the highest fresh rhizome yield per plant, curing percentage and cured rhizome yield. The quality parameters like curcumin, oleoresin and essential oil content were also showed superior performance in the treatment where solarization with transparent polyethylene film of 0.05 mm thick was applied.

The field demonstrations were carried out during 2016-17 in Rabi season to know effect of zinc and boron on yield of brinjal at total 10 farmers from Bharuch district. The production of brinjal is quite low in some part of the district due poor soil fertility status and imbalance fertilizer application by farmer. There was complete absence of micronutrients application to the crop. The initial soil analysis data showed deficiency of zinc and boron in experimental soil. Thus, to compare effect and method of use of zinc and boron; soil application and foliar spray were made along with improved practices against farmer practices. The highest plant height, average fruit weight, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield of brinjal was recorded with the soil application of zinc and boron which was superior over the foliar spray and farmer’s practices. The gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio recorded was also maximum in improved practices consisting soil application of zinc and boron as compared farmer’s practices.
