Aim: To assess the antibacterial activity of crude honey obtained from Ishielu Local Government of Ebonyi State on pathogenic bacterial species (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus pyogenes) isolated from wounds. Study Design: An experimental study which involved a random selection of patients with wound Place and Duration of Study: Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Nigeria, between February 2019 and November 2019. Methodology: A total of 50 samples of wound swabs collected from different sites of open wounds were cultured on blood agar, chocolate agar and MacConkey agar. The crude honey was diluted to concentrations ranging from 20% to 100% and the antibacterial activity was carried out by well diffusion method with augmentin used as a control. Result: Out of the 50 samples, 43 showed growth of bacterial species isolated, identified and confirmed using standard bacteriological techniques. Staphylococcus aureus (60.5%) was the most frequent isolates, followed by Escherichia coli (27.9%) and Streptococcus pyogenes (11.6%). All the tested bacterial isolates were susceptible to the honey and the number of isolates as well as the diameter of zone of inhibition was positively linearly correlated with increasing concentration of the honey (p= 0.00). At 100% honey, 22 (22.25±0.46 mm) out of 26 Staphylococcus aureus were susceptible as against 8 (4.62±0.31 mm) at 20% honey.  The number of Escherichia coli inhibited at 20% honey was 2 (1.96±0.04 mm) out of 12 isolated and at 100%, 7 (19.17±0.31 mm) were inhibited. At 20% honey, no Streptococcus pyogenes was inhibited and at 100%, 4 (21.84±0.15 mm) out of 5 isolated were inhibited. Conclusion: Locally produced crude honey may be used as a source of an effective antibacterial agent for wound management.

Abstract Background Patients with lymphoedema are at high risk of getting bacterial and fungal wound infections leading to acute inflammatory episodes associated with cellulitis and erysipelas. In Ethiopia, wound infections are traditionally treated with medicinal plants. Methods Agar well diffusion and colorimetric microdilution methods were used to determine the antibacterial activity of methanol extracts of the three medicinal plants against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shewanella alage, methicillin-resistant S. aureus ATCC®43300TM, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC700603, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC37853. Results The methanol extract of L. inermis leaves showed high activity against all tested bacterial species, which was comparable to the standard drugs. Similarly, the extracts of A. indica showed activity against all tested species though at higher concentrations, and higher activity was recorded against Streptococcus pyogenes isolates at all concentrations. However, the extract of A. aspera showed the lowest activity against all tested species except Streptococcus pyogenes isolates. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was recorded with the extract of L. inermis against E. coli isolate and S. aureus ATCC 25923. Conclusion Methanol extracts of L. inermis, A. indica, and A. aspera leaves exhibited antimicrobial activity against selected bacterial isolates involved in wound infections, of which the methanol extracts of L. inermis exhibited the highest activity. The results of the present study support the traditional use of plants against microbial infections, which could potentially be exploited for the treatment of wound infections associated with lymphoedema.

ABSTRACT               Sponge Callyspongia aerizusa contain potential bioactive compound that can be utilized in the health sector. Extract of sea sponge Callyspongia aerizusa, can hamper the growth of Salmonella typhi bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes, Shigella and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The aim of this study was to test the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and identify the type of symbionic bacteria of Callyspongia aerizusa sponge based on their physiological and biochemical characteristics. The method of testing the antibacterial activity was agar diffusion method (Kirby and Baurer diffusion disc). There were three bacterial isolates namely T1, T2, and T3 isolates. The result showed that T1, T2, and T3bacterial isolates had antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus test bacteria. Based on the biochemical test, T2bacterial isolates were identified as Bronchothrix bacteria and T1and T3 bacterial identified as Desulfotomaculum. Keywords: Callyspongia aerizusa, Antibacterial activity, symbiont bacteria, Biochemical Identification   ABSTRAKSpons Callyspongia aerizusa memiliki kandungan senyawa bioaktif potensial yang dapat dimanfaatkan dibidang kesehatan. Ekstrak spons laut Callyspongia aerizusa dapat menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri Salmonella typhi, Streptococcus pyogenes, Shigella dan Staphylococcus epidermidis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji aktivitas antibakteri dari bakteri simbion spons Callyspongia aerizusa terhadap bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcuc aureus dan mengidentifikasi jenis bakteri simbion spons Callyspongia aerizusa berdasarkan karakteristik fisiologis dan biokimianya. Metode pengujian aktivitas antibakteri yang digunakan yaitu metode difusi agar (disc diffusion Kirby and Baurer). Terdapat tiga isolat bakteri yaitu isolat T1, T2, dan T3. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa isolat bakteri T1, T2, dan T3 memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap bakteri uji Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcuc aureus. Berdasarkan uji biokima, isolat bakteri T2 diduga sebagai bakteri Brochothrix dan  isolat bakteri T1 dan T3 diduga sebagai bakteri Desulfotomaculum.Kata kunci: Callyspongia aerizusa, Aktivitas antibakteri, Bakteri simbion, Identifikasi Biokimia

Cow’s milk containing pathogenic bacteria is an important threat to the consumers. The objectives of the present study were to identify the bacterial agents of public health importance in milk samples (n=35) of different locations and to determine their sensitivity to different antibiotics. The milk samples were collected and transported aseptically and subsequently allowed for culture in bacteriological media, Gram’s staining and biochemical tests for the identification of bacterial species. The bacteria identified were Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, and their prevalence, in case of vendor milk specimens (n=28), were 96.43%, 53.57% and 35.71% respectively, and of brand milk specimens (n=7), were 42.86 %, 28.57% and 0%, respectively. This suggests that cautionary measures should be taken for quality milk production and consumption. The antibiotic sensitivity test was done by disc diffusion method and the average inhibition zones, in case of Staphylococcus aureus, were 32 mm for oxytetracycline, 26 mm for amoxicillin, 35 mm for ciprofloxacin, 27 mm for cefotaxime, 30 mm for ceftriaxone, 30 mm for azithromycin, and 26 mm for erythromycin; in case of Escherichia coli, were 5 mm for oxytetracycline, 9 mm for amoxicillin, 22 mm for ciprofloxacin, 30 mm for cefotaxime, 31 mm for ceftriaxone, 15 mm for azithromycin, and 0 mm for erythromycin; in case of Salmonella typhi., were 25 mm for oxytetracycline, 24 mm for amoxicillin, 38 mm for ciprofloxacin, 31 mm for cefotaxime, 34 mm for ceftriaxone, 24 mm for azithromycin, and 0 mm for erythromycin. Therefore, ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone may be the antibiotics of first choice, and cefotaxime and azithromycin may be the second choice among the test antibiotics for the treatment of illness caused by these bacteria.Asian J. <p>Penelitian ini merupakan lanjutan dari penelitian sebelumnya tentang produksi asam galat dari limbah kulit buah lokal di Lombok. Limbah kulit buah lokal yang digunakan yaitu kulit buah kepundung (<em>Baccaurea racemosa</em> Muell.Arg), kulit buah juwet (<em>Syzygium cumini</em>), dan kulit buah manggis (<em>Garcinia mangostana</em>). Pada penelitian ini dilakukan pengujian asam galat yang dihasilkan, untuk mengetahui aktivitas antioksidan dan antibakteri. Pengujian sifat antioksidan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode DPPH, sedangkan aktivitas antibakteri diuji dengan menggunakan metode difusi agar pada bakteri <em>Escherichia coli</em> dan <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa asam galat dari ketiga kulit buah memiliki aktivitas antioksidan. Asam galat dari kulit buah kepundung, kulit buah juwet dan kulit buah manggis memiliki IC<sub>50</sub> masing-masing sebesar 5.95; 5,96; dan 5,92 ppm. Berbeda dengan kemampuan sebagai antioksidan, asam galat resistan terhadap bakteri <em>Escherichia coli</em> dan <em>Staphylococcus aureus </em>yang menunjukkan bahwa asam galat tidak memiliki aktivitas sebagai antibakteri.</p><p><strong>Antibacterial and antioxidant activity of gallic acid from peel local fruit which produced by tannase. </strong>This research is a continuation of the previous research about the gallic acid production from peel fruit local in Lombok. The local fruit waste<em> </em>used<em> </em>are<em> kepundung rind (Baccaurea racemosa</em> Muell.Arg)<em>, juwet rind </em>(<em>Syzygium cumini</em>) <em>and mangosteen rind </em>(<em>Garcinia mangostana</em>)<em>. </em>In this research, the produced Gallic acid was tested to determine its antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The antioxidant test conducted by DPPH method, meanwhile, the antibacterial activity was performed by agar diffusion method to bacteria <em>Escherichia coli</em> and <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. The results show that the produce gallic acid from those three rind provide antioxidant activity. Gallic acid from kepundung rind, juwet rind, and mangosteen rind have IC<sub>50</sub> values of 5,95; 5,96; and 5,92,  respectively. Gallic acid not showed inhibitory actions against the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This result show that gallic acid from local fruit waste did not provide an antibacterial activity.</p>

Mangosteen leaves have flavonoid compounds, tannins, and saponins that can be efficacious as antibacterial. The aim of this study was to determine the fraction of mangosteen leaves having an antibacterial effect and knowing the class of compounds identified as having antibacterial activity after TLC- Bioautography testing was carried out. The samples were extracted using 96% maceratarion method and fractioned using liquid-liquid fractionation method with methanol, n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvents, antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method (Kirby and Bauer) with 3 concetrations namely 10%, 20% and 30%. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) uses n-hexane and chloroform solvens. TLC-Bioautography uses contact bioautography methods. The resultd showed that mangosteen leaves in methanol fraction with a concentration of 30% had a very large inhibitory activity again Staphylococcus aureus and ethyl acetate fraction with a concentration of 30% had the gratest antibacterial activity against  Escherichia coli. The results of the TLC- Bioautography study showed that the flavonoids compounds after spraying with AlCl3 and the mangosteen leaf Biosutography test had inhibitory zone activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Keywords: Mangosteen Leaves. Antibacterial, TLC Bioautography.  ABSTRAK Daun manggis mempunyai senyawa flavonoid, tanin, dan saponin yang dapat berkhasiat sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fraksi daun manggis memiliki efek antibakteri dan mengetahui golongan senyawa yang teridentifikasi memiliki aktivitas antibakteri setelah dilakukan pengujian KLT Bioautografi. Sampel diektrak dengan metode maserasi dengan pelarut 96% dan difraksinasi dengan metode  fraksinasi cair-cair dengan pelarut metanol, n-heksan dan etil asetat, aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode difusi agar (Kirby and Bauer) dengan 3 kosentrasi yaitu 10%, 20% dan 30%. Kromatografi Lapis Tipis (KLT) menggunakan pelarut n-heksan dan klorofom. KLT-Bioautografi menggunakan metode bioautografi kontak. Hasil penelitian menunjukan daun manggis pada fraksi metanol  dengan kosentrasi 30% memiliki aktivitas zona hambat ppaling besar terhadapat bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan fraksi etil asetat dengan kosentrasi 30% memiliki aktivitas antibakteri paling besar terhadap  Escherichia coli. Hasil penelitian KLT-Bioautografi menunjukan golongan senyawa flavonoid setelah disemprotkan dengan AlCl3 dan uji Bioautografi daun manggis memiliki aktivitas zona hambat terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Kata kunci : Daun Manggis, Antibakteri, KLT- Bioautografi.

Mixed ligands biologically active complexes of cobalt(II), copper(II) and nickel(II) with nicotinoylhydrazine-derived ONO, NNO and SNO donor schiff-base ligands having the same metal ion but different anions such as sulphate, nitrate, oxalate and acetate have been synthesised and characterised on the basis of their physical, analytical and spectral data. In order to evaluate the role of anions on their bioability, these ligands and their synthesised metal complexes with various anions have been screened against bacterial species such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and the title studies have proved a definative role of anions in increasing the biological activity

Some novel N-phenylpyrazolines were synthesized and investigated for their antibacterial activitiy. Chalcones 2-4 which were prepared from acetophenone and veratraldehyde derivatives were reacted with phenylhydrazine to give N-phenylpyrazolines 5-7. All of the synthesized compounds were characterized using FTIR, GC-MS, and NMR spectrometers. Further, antibacterial activity of N-phenylpyrazolines were evaluated by agar well-diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Shigella flexneri. The highest activity (highest inhibition zone) of compound 5 was 2.6 mm (at 1000 ppm) against B. subtillis, compound 6 was 7.25 mm (at 1000 ppm) against S. aureus, and compound 7 was 6.75 mm (at 500 ppm) against S. aureus. The results indicated that compound 6 and 7 exhibited promising antibacterial activity.

High incidence of mycoses were found in the guts and malpighian tubes of Phlebokomus papatasi from the Jordan Valley and P. tobbi from Zakinthos, Greece. Infections with several different bacteria were also found in the guts of female P. tobbi. Fungi cultured from guts of laboratory reared P. papatasi that had similar mycoses were identified as Aspergillus scierotiorum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fungi-infected laboratory reared P. papatasi were refractory to artificial infections with a Leishmania major strain specific to them. The crop contents of P. papatasi, where sugar meals are stored, demonstrated antibacterial activity against the following bacterial species in culture: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella sonnei, Streptococcus group A and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is postulated that the bacteria-free gut normal to sandflies is effected by the bacterial inhibitor present in the crop.

Biologically active complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with novel ONO, NNO and SNO donor pyrazinoylhydrazine-derived compounds have been prepared and characterized on the basis of analytical data and various physicochemical studies. Distorted octahedral structures for all the complexes have been proposed. The synthesized ligands and their complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against bacterial species Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonae. The activity data show the metal complexes to be more active than the parent free ligands against one or more bacterial species.

This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration ethanol extract from tembelakan leaf (Lantana camara Linn)  on bacteria growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96% and then separated using rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract by Well agar diffusion method. Variation in crude extract saponin used in this study was 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and positive controls were used for comparison with Amoxicilin and Chloramphenicole concentration of 25 µg/mL and DMSO as a negative control. The results of antibacterial activity test is indicated by the formation of growth inhibitory region S. aureus and E. coli. The result of growth inhibitory regions was analyzed by One way ANOVA. One way ANOVA test results indicate that there are effects of ethanol extract concentration of tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) against S. aureus and E. coli. Effective concentration of ethanol extract tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) when compared with positive control to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli is at 25% with a relatively strong antibacterial activity. Test with phytochemicals screening method which is showed that tembelekan leaf contains the flavanoid, saponins, and tannins compounds as antibacterial
