Abstract Our work is aimed at the method of fabricating arrays of semiconductor III-V NWs transferred into a flexible polymer membrane made of polydimethylsiloxane. GaP/GaPAs NWs with an axial p-i-n structure were synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy. The synthesized NW arrays on substrates were encapsulated into a silicone membrane by the G-coating method in a swinging-bucket centrifuge. After membranes were treated in a plasma mixture of O2/CF2 gases to open the NWs tops, which ensured the application of conductive transparent contacts - single-walled carbon nanotubes obtained by aerosol chemical method. At the last technological stage, the membranes were separated from substrates by peeling with a razor blade and the second carbon nanotubes contact was formed. The obtained LED NW/silicone membranes were characterized by I-V and the electroluminescence spectroscopy measurements.

Background and Aims: Grasses have five different types of endosperm starch grain morphology. Even though there is high diversity within the family, the morphology of the starch grains is generally represented by one or two species. Some genera, such as Andropogon (Andropogoneae), were reported to have at least three types of starch grains. However, most of the reviewed species were transferred to other genera. Therefore, the question whether the genus has one or more types of starch grain morphology remains unanswered. Methods: Between four and eight mature caryopses were removed from specimens deposited in the herbarium IEB for most species, as well as from plants monitored in the field until they had mature caryopses. The caryopses were attached on a plate with a drop of white adhesive Resistol® or resin and then sectioned with a razor blade. Sections were stained with a drop of diluted Lugol´s solution, microscopically observed and photographed at several magnifications. Key results: All Andropogon species observed have only one type of starch grain morphology, the Andropogon-type. In all species the simple starch grains are much more abundant than the compound ones, except in A. tenuispatheus where the ratio is inverted. The other two reviewed species, Arthraxon hispidus and Hyparrhenia rufa have Andropogon-type and Panicum-type starch grains, respectively. Conclusions: It is confirmed that, so far, all Andropogon species observed have one type (Andropogon-type) of endosperm starch grain morphology. There is variation in the size, size distribution and shape of the starch grains among the species. Andropogon gayanus is the only reviewed species with large starch grains reaching 28 µm, whereas those in the other species measure up to 15 µm in diameter.

Since 2018, bleeding cankers have been observed on maple trees in multiple home gardens in southwest Idaho. The cankers ooze a dark sap and and are approximately 10 cm to 35 cm in diameter. Cankers typically occur on the main trunk but are also present on scaffold branches in severe infecrions. Symptoms of foliar chlorois, branch dieback, and premature autumn senescence were also associated with the disease. Phytophthora DNA was detected in symptomatic material from five trees using real-time PCR (Miles et al., 2017). In July 2019 recovery of a causal agent from a symptomatic Acer x freemanii tree was attempted. Excisions were made from the interface of healthy and diseased tissue around the cankers using a chisel. The tissue was then placed in sealed plastic ziplock bags at 4°C for 7 days. Hyphae were then removed with forceps and placed onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with penicillin G (0.2 g/liter) and streptomycin sulfate (0.8 g/liter). Colonies resembling Phytophthora cactorum were consistently observed after 5 days at 21°C. Tentative P. cactorum identification was based on the presence of abundant papillate and caducous sporangia on a short pedicel; sporangia were approximately 30 μm long and 26 μm wide (Bush et al., 2006; Hudler, 2013). Individual hyphal tips were transferred to fresh PDA plates and sequencing of both the rDNA ITS region and Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) was completed for a representative isolate (D19-130). DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing were as previously described (Woodhall et al. 2013; Robideau et al., 2011). The resulting DNA sequences for rDNA ITS (MW315449) and COI (MW881040) were both 100% identical (723/723 bp and 728/728 bp) with sequences from cultures previously identified as P. cactorum (MH171627 and MH136858). To determine pathogenicity, 14 month-old maple (A. x freemanii) trees in individual containers with potting mix were wounded 15 mm above the soil line with a single 10 mm incision using a sterile razor blade and inoculated by placing a 10 mm2 fully colonized PDA plug of isolate D19-130 on the wound. The inoculum and wound were then covered with a damp cotton ball that was secured loosely with parafilm. Control plants consisted of uninoculated plants and wounded plants inoculated with a PDA agar plug. Each treatment was replicated five times and placed in a controlled environment chamber set at 24ºC and 90% relative humidity. All treatments were sprayed with water daily to ensure the cotton balls remained damp. After 8 weeks, black lesions, up to approximately 25 mm above the soil line, were observed on the stem base of all P. cactorum-inoculated plants. No black lesions were observed on non-inoculated plants or plants inoculated with a PDA agar plug. P. cactorum was isolated from lesions, as described above, except polystyrene foam boxes containing moist paper towels were used instead of bags. This report confirms P. cactorum as a causal agent of bleeding canker of maple in Idaho for the first time. It has been shown that several Phytophthora species can infect maple (Jung and Burgess, 2009; Huddler, 2013). P. cactorum has a wide host range but certain strains have been associated with lethal bleeding stem cankers in maple and other deciduous trees worldwide (Huddler, 2013). Knowledge of the causal agent of bleeding canker on maple will help determine appropriate disease management practices.

Background: Viral hepatitis is a deadly disease which can manifest as acute, chronic, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver failure and responsible for 1.34 million deaths globally, a number comparable to deaths caused by tuberculosis and higher than those caused by HIV. Objectives: The goal of this survey was to find the vastness of different risk factors associated with Viral Hepatitis and to describe the connection between these risk and sociodemographic factors among adults in Sokoto-Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was carried in nine local government areas in the state. A two-stage cluster sampling was utilized and adults who were living in the selected household were interviewed. A multivariate linear regression model was used to evaluate the relationship between sociodemographic indicators and different viral hepatitis risk factors. Results: Seven hundred and twenty eight respondents were recruited for this survey. Sharing nail cutters, body piercing, and razor blade use were the most pervasive risk factors among respondents. Males, married couples, respondents somewhere in the range of 27 and 40 years of age, and people with low educational achievement were more likely to be exposed to risk factors associated with Viral Hepatitis. Conclusion: The risk of viral hepatitis was moderately high among the survey subject. Consequently, explicit projects like forum, classes and persistent instruction on preventive measures for viral hepatitis ought to be custom fitted to these forums. These projects could be directed by government specialists like the Ministry of Health Sokoto and other support agencies and non-governmental organizations.

The cleaving of a novel microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) to obtain an acceptable connectorized fiber end-face is studied. The effect of the blade temperature and the speed of the cutting blade on the end-face is qualitatively assessed. Recently manufactured mPOFs with air-structured 3- and 4-ring hexagonal-like hole cladding structures with outer fiber diameters of around 250 μm are employed. Good quality end-faces can be obtained by cleaving mPOF fibers at room temperature for blade temperatures within the range 60–80 °C and at a low blade speed at 0.5 mm/s. The importance of the blade surface quality is also addressed, being a critical condition for obtaining satisfactory mPOF end-faces after cleaving. From our experiments, up to four fiber cuts with the same razor blade and blade surface can be carried out with acceptable and similar fiber end-face results.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of leaf ethanolic extract of Etlingera hemisphaerica (LE3H) in reducing defects in fetal anatomy and endochondral ossification in mice induced by HgCl2 during the post-implantation period. Pregnant mice were divided into four groups, each consisting of 10 dams, and received drink and food ad libitum. The first group was administered LE3H (E1), the second one HgCl2 (E2), the third one HgCl2+LE3H (E3), and the fourth was control (E0), administered double-distilled water only. HgCl2 (5 mg/kg bw) was administrated by injection intraperitoneally on gestation day (GD)9 and LE3H (0.39 mg/g bw) was administered by gavage on GD10. The treated and control animals were killed by cervical dislocation on GD18, dissected, and the morphologically normal living fetuses (MNLF) were collected. The MNLF of E0, E1, E2, and E3 from 5 dams were fixed with Bouin solution, and observed using the free hand razor blade technique for soft tissue examination. The remaining MNLF were fixed with 96% ethanol, and then stained with Alizarin Red S and Alcian Blue for ossification examination. Index of length of ossified part (ILOP) of humerus, index of width of ossified part (IWOP) of humerus, ILOP of femur, and IWOP of femur were calculated. E2 had higher cases of anatomical defects (74,6%) than E3 (48.9%), E1 (15.0%), and E0 (0%). E2 had humerus IWOP of 0.82±0.03, which was significantly lower than that of E0 (0.89±0.04) and E1 (0.89±0.03), while that of E1 and E0 was not significantly different from each other. Meanwhile, IWOP in E3 (0.88±0.03) was significantly higher than that in E2, but not different from that in E1 and E0. Thus, LE3H mitigated defects in fetal anatomy and endochondral ossification induced by HgCl2 in mice.

In vitro propagation of palm oil is still an obstacle for mass propagation due to the low plant regeneration frequency. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea (CPPU) on a somatic embryo (SE) proliferation and plant regeneration of oil palm SUP-PSU1. At an approximate size of 5 mm, SE from chopping with a sharp razor blade at 100 times was cultured on oil palm culture medium (OPCM) with 0.1 mg/L dicamba and different concentrations CPPU. The results showed that 0.3 mg/L CPPU gave the highest SE proliferation at 100 % and the number of SEs at 5.16 embryos/tube after 4 weeks of culture. SE was transferred to Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.2M sorbitol, a secondary somatic embryo (SSE), which was induced at 66.67 % with 21.2 embryos/tube after 8 weeks. Furthermore, cultured SSE on PGR-free MS medium for 8 weeks gave the highest germination rate at 65 %, with the number of shoots at 2.29 shoots. Thus, this study provides new information for improving the plantlet regeneration system through somatic embryogenesis in oil palm.
