Introduction. The article analyzes the transformations of the concept of justice in early Byzantine thought. The purpose of the article is to test the hypothesis that the semantic shifts in the meaning of the concept of justice in the philosophical and theological literature were due to political processes and events. Methods. The article analyzes the political philosophical and political theological texts of the fourth century: “Oration in Honor of Constantine on the Thirtieth Anniversary of His Reign” by Eusebius of Caesarea; “Panegyric in Honour of Constantius” and “The Heroic Deeds of Constantius” by emperor Julian (“The Apostate”); “On Kingship” by Synesius of Cyrene. In the course of the analysis, the methodological tools of the history of concepts were used. Analysis. The analysis revealed a conflict between the concepts of “justice” and “piety”. It was found that the analyzed texts violate the ancient political and philosophical correlation of these concepts in which piety is considered as a form of justice. In the texts of Eusebius of Caesarea, piety is presented as a particular virtue without any connection with justice. Moreover, the frequency of using the concept of “piety” in the sense of the ruler’s virtue significantly exceeds the frequency of using the concept of “justice” in the sense of political virtue. In the texts of the Emperor Justinian, the discursive status of “justice” is restored. However, in the political philosophy of Synesius of Cyrene, the correlation of the concepts of “justice” and “piety” prescribed by Eusebius of Caesarea is fixed. Results. These processes is due to the influence of religious discourse on political one which is quite understandable in the works of theologians, on the one hand, and the crisis of polis and republican political technologies and discourses in the situation of increasing complexity of administrative tasks faced by the Roman emperors of the 4th century, on the other hand which subsequently led to the formation of a specific Byzantine “taxis” – a socio-cultural order. In this regard, the texts of Emperor Julian can be considered as an unsuccessful attempt to restore the previous discourse, an attempt to restore justice to a dominant place among the virtues of the ruler. The failure of this attempt is attested from the texts of Synesius of Cyrene. All the above allows us to conclude that a new Christian-imperial political discourse is being generated in the corpus of philosophical and theological texts in which the concept of justice is given a relatively modest place.

The present article scrutinizes the phenomenon of a systemic silencing of the past visible in recent socio-political challenges caused by Brexit, especially in the case of the Irish border. Due to the comparative character of the paper, the attention is targeted at a symptomatic amnesia manifested on the British and Northern Irish sides. Postcolonial melancholia, to use Paul Gilroy’s term, facilitated by a systemic whitewashing of British imperial past, is contrasted here with Northern Irish postcolonial amnesia understood as a personal and institutionalised suppression of the difficult memory of colonisation and violence. In what follows, the paper aims to show how these two phenomena meet in the conflict of Brexit and how literature comments on the current political, social and cultural issues such as Brexit based on the example of Anna Burns’ novel Milkman (2018). The article discusses the silence which has surrounded the issue of the Irish Border in Brexit debates, as well as looks at the Northern Irish reluctance to talk about their past as an unsuccessful attempt to escape the demons of the past.

The accession of Charles I exacerbated the tensions experienced between monarch and Parliament under James I and Herbert’s courtly career gradually faded following the deaths of the duke of Buckingham and earl of Pembroke. Chapter 13 examines Herbert’s attempts, after his return from France, to secure noble title, appointment to the Privy Council, and payment of his long-overdue allowances. It explores his efforts, as old age approached, to retain a place for himself among the rising stars at court, carve out a role for himself as a member of the Council of War, avoid active involvement in parliamentary criticism of the royal prerogative, offer occasional (unsolicited) advice to the king, and reassert his authority in county government in Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. It looks at his extensive remodelling of Montgomery Castle to provide a fashionable country house appropriate to his rank, his use of prestigious rental properties in London, and his efforts to increase the income derived from his neglected estates in England, Wales, and Ireland. It charts his difficult relationship with his wife and adult children and neglect of his patriarchal responsibilities, including his failure to marry his daughter and his longstanding dispute with his eldest son, Richard, over his allowance, debts, and inheritance of his mother’s estates. It briefly probes Herbert’s unsuccessful attempt to remarry in the late 1630s.

Introduction. One of the most common manifestations of diseases of the biliary tract are strictures or stenoses. They can have malignant, inflammatory and traumatic etiology, as well as be accompanied by mechanical jaundice syndrome. Aim. To study the results of the use of antegrade endobiliary interventions in benign diseases of the biliary tract complicated by mechanical jaundice. Materials and methods. An analysis of surgical treatment of 34 patients with benign diseases of the biliary tract complicated by mechanical jaundice (MJ) in the SI “V.T. Zatsev IGUS NAMSU». Choledocholithiasis was the cause of MF in 21 (61.8 %) cases, stricture of the LV in 6 (17.6 %) and stricture of the biliodigestive anastomosis (BDA) in 7 (20.6 %) patients. BDA strictures developed after the following operations: biliobiliostomy — 1 (14.3 %), hepaticojejunostomy — 3 (42.9 %), choledochoduodenoanastomosis — 2 (28.5 %) and hepaticoduodenostomy — 1 (14.3 %) %). Research results. External percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage was performed in 7 (46.7 %) patients, external-internal percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage was performed in 6 (40 %), percutaneous transhepatic cholecystostomy was performed in 2 (13.4 %) patients. With slightly dilated intrahepatic ducts (<5 mm) cholangiodrainage was established in 3 (20 %) patients. Of these, in 3 (20.0 %) cases, a separate percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage of the right and left lobular ducts of the liver was performed. Performing percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage allows to determine the level and nature of biliary block in a minimally invasive way, to perform biliary decompression and prevention of complications after an unsuccessful attempt at endoscopic treatment. Conclusions. By using antegrade endobiliary interventions, we were able to reduce the risk of biliary decompression complications compared with patients who had unsuccessful attempts at endoscopic treatment from 15 (78.9 %) to 1 (6.67 %), and to reduce the number of complications after reconstructive rehabilitation. operations from 10 (52.6 %) to 1 (6.67 %) and the mortality rate from 2 (10.5 %) to 1 (6.67 %).

The aim of this article is to analyse the relations of the three Ottoman vassal provinces (Transylvania, Moldavia and Wallachia) during the last years of the Long Turkish War (1591/93–1606). The provinces rebelled against the Ottomans at the beginning of the war. Then influenced by the policies of their dynasties or due to the military occupation of the neighbouring great powers such as the Habsburg monarchy, Poland and the Ottoman Empire, they changed the sides of the conflict. The Movilăs (or Movilă family) tried to govern two Romanian voivodships, Moldavia and Wallachia simultaneously. They had a good relation with the Ottomans and they supported rule of István Bocskai (r. 1604–1606), who rebelled against the Habsburgs in 1604 and was elected as the Prince of Transylvania and Hungary by the Hungarian rebels. The voivode of Wallachia, Radu Şerban (r. 1601, 1602–1610, 1611), who secretly allied himself with the Habsburgs, while simultaneously being recognised by the Ottoman side also endorsed him. The Prince of Moldavia, Ieremia Movilă (r. 1595–1606), tried to remove him from the Wallachian throne. He wanted to install his younger brother, Simion (r. 1600–1602 in Wallachia, r. 1606–1607 in Moldavia) – who had once held the title of the Prince of Wallachia – on the Wallachian throne after deposing of Radu Şerban. They formed an alliance with the Ottoman military dignitaries as well as with Bocskai to achieve their goal. Although this was an unsuccessful attempt, they strongly supported the Hungarian uprising. After the death of Ieremia Movilă, his sons tried to gain the power over Moldavia with Polish assistance. By contrast, the Hungarians gave military assistance to Simion against Ieremia’s sons.

Introduction. This paper introduces the authentic text of ”Gesr bogdyn tusk tuuji” (The Saga of Geser-bogdo) for the academic community. It was written down in Malye Derbety, Maloderbety raion, Kalmyk ASSR in 1982 by the present author; its performer was Sharlda Dordzhievich Dordzhiev (1893–1984), Baga khurul shabiner, uimguilmyd. The original text is supplemented by Russian translation made by the author of the publication and a short biography of the performer. Also, the article includes a brief description of the sample, focusing on the specifics of recording and of keeping the field notes. The article aims at introducing new material, such as the authentic text ”The Saga of Geser-bogdo”, its Russian translation, and the performer’s biographical data. Data and methods. The research is based on the manuscript from the author’s private archive; the Kalmyk text of eleven pages is written down on paper (A4, yellow paper). There are also additional materials, such as the interviews with Dordzhiev’s relatives and villagers. Results. ”The Saga of Geser-bogdo” is devoted to an interesting story of Geser-bogdo’s mission, i. e. the protagonist’s efforts to free the Earth (Middle World) from cold, as well as demons personified as Andzhlula and his wife. The narrative is based on two microstories: i) an unsuccessful attempt to getrid of cold on the Earth with the help of Khurmusta Tengri and ii) the victory over Andzhlula and his wife with the help of Sandzhi, the protagonist’s brother from heavens. The analysis shows that, in terms of its structure and content, ”The Saga of Geser-bogdo” includes a number of important segments, which are parallel to other Geser’s epic narratives. The manuscript is of relevance for studies of the Kalmyk oral tradition of Geser sagas. Conclusions. ”The Saga of Geser-bogdo”, performed by Dordzhiev in 1982, indicates that oral retellings of Geser sagas were widely circulated in Kalmykia. Also, the data pertaining to the storyteller’s life and art shows the popularity of the epic narratives in the Kalmyk milieu at the time the recording was made (late 20th c.). The epic sample maybe of interest to folklorists and epic scholars for their comparative and textological studies, as well as for the studies of storytelling tradition and of the linguistic aspect of popular oral art.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) are the most common subepithelial lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. Treatment of lesions greater than 2 cm in diameter is by laparoscopic wedge resection. We report a 77-year-old man who was diagnosed with a 2.3 cm diameter gastric GIST. He had a thickened mitral valve, severe mitral annular calcification, mild mitral regurgitation and moderate aortic stenosis. One week after undergoing an unsuccessful attempt at Laparoscopic Endoscopic Cooperative Surgery (LECS), he was admitted with a fever of 40.2o C. Blood cultures grew Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography revealed moderate mitral regurgitation and an 8 X 5 mm vegetation on the mitral valve and posterior annulus. This is the first report of endocarditis following LECS. Physicians need to be aware of this possible complication. Keywords: endocarditis; GI stromal tumor; endocarditis; endoscopic tumor.

This research describes the model of midwifery care embedded in Newtown Union Health Service (NUHS). This model of care is different from the way most midwifery services in New Zealand are organised. The main New Zealand midwifery services are provided by self-employed midwives and hospital midwives. NUHS was set up to provide accessible health services to a low income population. Pivotal to the service is the employment of a multidisciplinary team which aims to meet most of the health needs of its registered population. As the NUHS midwifery service was set within the larger organisation the case study research method was chosen as it is a method which stresses the importance of understanding the context of a case. It permits the use of several sets of data to capture the complexity of a case. Data collection included interviews with five midwives and seven multidisciplinary team members including managers working at NUHS. An unsuccessful attempt was made to gain access to and interview pregnant women who had used this service. Other data came from several documents about the Newtown community and the service. Data analysis revealed that the NUHS model of midwifery care was made up of five interrelated and interacting components: the community, NUHS, the midwives as integral to the multidisciplinary team, the midwives and the women in the care of the midwives. A discussion of the model includes what was extrapolated as three distinctive features of the model: their philosophy, the union influence and the midwives in the multi disciplinary team. The NUHS model of midwifery care is then related to other national and international models where its distinctiveness is supported.
