The article presents the results of a study to determine the color of the central incisor on the upper jaw. Traditionally, the choice of the color of this tooth is the most difficult and controversial. Color determination was carried out by hardware (Vita Easyshade Advance 4.0) and visual methods, which were attended by students of SamSMU aged 19 to 22 years. The obtained results say that it is preferable to use the hardware method based on the digital perception of the object under study and adapted to the generally accepted color scale; this method minimizes the requirements for color determination criteria, is a high-tech and convenient solution in the daily practice of a dentist.

This article reveals the philosophical grounds of the aesthetics of color, analyzes the correlation between the structures of philosophical and artistic comprehension of coloristics. Interaction of philosophy and art as the forms of cultural identity manifests in the sphere of intellectual understanding of the perception of color and its semantics in painting. In the hidden logic of contemplation of color, can be traced the outlines of the problematic of transcendental and intelligible in art conditions for the aesthetic approach towards chromatic space. Color creates the visual beauty, thus it is apparent why the aesthetic knowledge seeks to clarify to which extent we can assess the experience of color – the result of coloration of light. The art itself creates the so-called color ontology of the world. First the first time, the beauty of color and its perception are analyzed in the context of correlation between art and transcendental traditions of philosophizing  (Descartes, Kant, early Husserl –  his work “The Philosophy of Arithmetic”) that allows matching the key to a new interpretation of the tradition of color. Determination of its meaning requires comparing history and structure of the philosophical and artistic metaphor of color. It is demonstrated that the phenomenon of color is of crucial significance for the aesthetics, as it implies not only comprehension of the problem of correlation between nature and art, but also cognition of the beauty of color, its universal value for all forms of art, profound structures of perception of coloristic phenomena, picturesque unveiling of the color harmony of the painting.

Shade matching is a challenging step and the major objective in esthetic and restorative dentistry. On many occasions, the production of the accurate target color will not be achieved due to errors in the registration of the target color, or errors in composing the appropriate color of the restoration in the dental laboratory. Thus, the accurate and correct shade matching of tooth and restoration is one of the most important quality criteria for the patient and the key to successful results for the dentist. Conclusion: Spectrophotometers, colorimeters, intraoral scanners, and imaging systems are useful and relevant tools for tooth color measurement and analysis, and for the quality control of color reproduction. The combination of visual and instrumental methods of tooth color determination will complement each other, leading toward predictable esthetic results.

Color is one of the key sensory characteristics in the evaluation of the quality of mangos (Mangifera indica) especially with regard to determining the optimal level of ripeness. However, an objective color determination of entire fruits can be a challenging task. Conventional evaluation methods such as colorimetric or spectrophotometric procedures are primarily limited to a homogenous distribution of the color. Accordingly, a direct assessment of the mango quality with regard to color requires more pronounced color determination procedures. In this study, the color of the peel and the pulp of the mango cultivars “Nam Dokmai”, “Mahachanok”, and “Kent” was evaluated and categorized into various levels of ripeness using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera in combination with a computer vision system and color standards. The color evaluation process is based on a transformation of the RGB (red, green, and blue) color space values into the HSI (hue, saturation, and intensity) color system and the Natural Color Standard (NCS). The results showed that for pulp color codes, 0560-Y20R and 0560-Y40R can be used as appropriate indicators for the ripeness of the cultivars “Nam Dokmai” and “Mahachanok”. The peels of these two mango cultivars present two distinct colors (1050-Y40R and 1060-Y40R), which can be used to determine the fruit maturity during the post-ripening process. However, in the case of the cultivar “Kent”, peel color detection was not an applicable approach for determining ripeness; thus, the determination of the pulp color with the color code 0550-Y20R gave promising results.

Abstract Introduction This study evaluated the reproducibility of electronic color determination system evaluations of the marginal gingiva, which could be important for adhesive cervical fillings or prosthetic restorations that imitate the gingiva. Material and methods In 50 subjects, the L*, a*, and b* color coordinates were evaluated five times at a point in the marginal area of a central incisor using different electronic color determination systems: (SP) Shadepilot, (ES) Easyshade, (CE) Crystaleye, and (SV) X-Rite. The mean color difference (ΔE) and its standard deviation between the five measurements from each participant were calculated separately for each device. Further ICC for interdevice reliability was determined. Results The L*, a*, and b* color coordinates and ΔE values differed significantly among the systems (p < 0.001). Within each patient and measurement system, ΔE ranged from 1.4 to 3.2 (SD 1.1–2.5), L* from 2.6 to 5.7 (SD 2.6–5.7), a* from 11.9 to 21.3 (SD 3.6–3.9), and b* from 15.1 to 28.9 (SD 1.7–4.3). Interdevice reliability ranged between 0.675 and 0.807. Conclusions Color determination of the marginal gingiva using the electronic tooth color determination systems tested herein showed limited reproducibility. The results obtained with the different measurement systems differed enormously. Clinical relevance These results show that the electronic color measurement devices tested allow no high reproducible determination of color coordinates of the marginal gingiva.

Background: Shade matching is a significant treatment step and a challenge for the clinical team with potentially high costs for color correction. Currently, in the United States, the majority of private dental practitioners use visual color matching, but a recent study has reported a high rate of mistakes of subjective color determination among graduate dentists. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study is to analyze whether a change in the oral background due to dental occlusion can influence tooth color determination. Methods: Volunteer dental students underwent spectrophotometric color assessment using the SpectroShade device. Two measurements were carried out (with the individuals’ occlusion closed and with the occlusion open) on 43 upper central and 58 lateral incisors. Association between colorimetric variables L*, a*, b* and ΔE00 and tooth width, length and tobacco usage were examined. Results: Slight changes in the CIELAB values between closed and open occlusions were found for both the gingival and the central sections as for the overall tooth area, with mean ΔL*=-1.24, Δa*=-1.77, Δb*=-1.42 and ΔE00=1,84. A larger difference was detected in the incisal area, with mean ΔL*=-2.99, Δa*=-1.76, Δb*=-2.83 and ΔE00=3.65. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study showed that dental occlusion does not play a significant role in tooth color matching determinations, even though attention to avoid overbite due to a maximum intercuspation should be made.
