The digital transformation of all socio-economic spheres of the country determines the inclusion of digital factors in the assessment of investment potential. The aim of this paper is to justify the need to include digital factors in assessing the investment potential and the assessment of the digital potential of St. Petersburg. The study includes statistical methods of correlation analysis, average values, comparison, and grouping. This paper defines the concept of digital potential; highlights indicators of digital technology development; presents a methodology and assessment of the digital capacity of St. Petersburg compared with other cities of federal status through 2016–2018. The author features three key components of digital potential: information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, digital government, and e-business. The study shows that St. Petersburg’s digital potential is sustainably growing. The research reveals that the digital capacity of St. Petersburg is improving by boosting the “e-business” component which reflects the use of ERP and CRM systems by organizations, as well as by the e-commerce. The low level of the “digital government” component has a negative effect on the integral level of digital potential despite the ongoing digitization process in the public sector services. The conclusions of the study suggest that the use of digital channels to interact with public authorities, the digitization of businesses, as well as the implementation of electronic workflow processes will improve the digital potential of St. Petersburg. Taking digital factors into account as a part of the investment potential of a city will make it possible to accurately assess its investment attractiveness. The findings of the study may be useful to scientists, rating agencies, and government officials when making investment decisions. The prospects for future research on this topic consist of expanding its base, clarifying the components of the digital potential factors, and methods for assessing the investment attractiveness of a territorial entity.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now rapidly being applied in our society. While the breakthrough of AI in terms of its use and its applicability on a societal level has in fact been repeatedly announced since the mid 1950s, is now truer than ever. As recently acknowledged, AI has now, after three waves of developments, finally left the research labs and entered real-world contexts. Accordingly, and as AI is now increasingly and widely applied, we suggest that it is now time to address issues related to “Applied Artificial Intelligence” (AAI). In this paper we propose this term, and we define it as the study, design, development, implementation and use of Artificial Intelligence technologies to address real-world problems. In this article we present how AI has developed over the past few decades, and across three waves of developments, and we illustrated Applied Artificial Intelligence by presenting our e-Biz corp case where a global actor is now using AI as a core component of their online business. We conclude this article with a set of recommendations for moving forward with Applied Artificial Intelligence, and we present the main contributions offered by our work to the growing body of research on how to make use of AI.

This paper investigates the alignment of the demand side of business analytics (based on advertised job positions) with the supply side (based on the university curricula of U.S. business analytics programs). We text-mined job advertisements and core and elective course descriptions to identify the competencies demanded by business analytics–related jobs and those being taught in graduate analytics programs that include a business component. A comparative analysis of the competencies reveals that, although some of the competencies required by the jobs are taught adequately at the universities, a few key concepts and topics are not covered at sufficient depth as needed by the jobs. The research also shows that many traditional analytics topics are being over-taught at the universities when compared with the demand, whereas some key soft skills are not addressed at a sufficient level in many programs. The study provides a basis for future comparison of data-science positions and programs with the jobs and programs in business analytics.

AbstractReimbursement for hearing aids in the present time has become as complicated, if not more so, than any other area of health care. For many years, hearing aids were a noncovered item where insurance was concerned. The predominant model of bundling costs into a single dollar amount was copied decades ago from hearing instrument specialists. However, insurance companies and federal agencies are increasingly covering the cost of the diagnostic hearing evaluation and at least some of the costs associated with hearing aid purchases. One operational question is whether the bundled charge model is still appropriate, or should audiologists follow more closely the example of optometry whereby professional services are charged separately from the cost of goods sold? The models that have evolved constitute a broad mixture of bundling, partial bundling (i.e., partial unbundling), and complete unbundling. There exists no uniformity for which charge method is best. But, with greater frequency, insurance requirements are forcing a movement toward partial or complete unbundling of associated costs. Regardless of which charge model is adopted, calculation of the cost of service delivery for each audiology practice is an essential business component to justify charges and make educated decisions regarding participation in various insurance, cooperative, or network plans.

The article aims at studying the banks’ value and managing it during consolidation in order to identify the relationship between the consolidation form and the growth of the bank’s value. The main consolidation forms are systematized and generalized taking into account global and domestic experience, which include the following: mergers, takeover, partial takeover, acquisition of assets, acquisition of specific assets, acquisition of fixed assets, acquisition of residual share, repurchase, recapitalization, exchange. It is noted that the choice of the banks’ consolidation form is determined primarily by the purpose of realizing the business interests of the parties to the agreement. The statistics of the scales of global M&A agreements by consolidation forms is given. 26901 bank consolidation agreements in various forms for the period from 01.01.1965 to 30.04.2019 in 146 countries have been analyzed. It is noted that the dynamics of M&A transactions in the banking business reached peak values in the period from the early 2000s to the end of 2010. It was during this crisis period (the crisis in the IT industry and the global financial crisis of 2007–2008) that 50 % of all consolidation agreements tool place. The country with the largest number of transactions is the United States, and the region dominating the sphere by the total volume of transactions is Western Asia. It is noted that each consolidation form is characterized by a specific set of factors that affect it. As a result, it is these factors that, as a result of the existing cause-and-effect relationships, shape the resulting bank’s value. Research has shown that there is a link between the forms of consolidation processes and the value influencing factors, and this link should be identified to better understand the banks’ value formation before concluding M&A agreements. It is proposed to expand the existing list of factors in research works in Economics, taking into account the business component of consolidation processes.
