Abstract There is great interest in the development of a simple system that could identify adulteration or counterfeiting of Peruvian Pisco (a grape-based alcoholic drink). In this study, sensors based on SnO2-TiO2 and SnO2-MoO3 composites with different weight composition ratios were synthesized and characterized. These sensors were tested with aqueous solutions of EtOH/MetOH and Pisco samples of Italia and Quebranta varieties in order to explore their capacity to identify variations in these beverages. The response profile of the most sensitive sensors showed an enhanced response to alcoholic samples with greater content of ethanol up to a concentration of 45%v/v, while the increased content of methanol in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 % v/v diminished the intensity of the sensor response. Differences in the composition of methanol and ethanol in the Pisco varieties studied (Italia and Quebranta) were correlated to the capacity of the composite-based sensors to differentiate them with greater performance. Sensors based on SnO2-TiO2-1/2 composites showed greater reproducibility of their response profile over time in comparison to SnO2-TiO2-1/1 and SnO2-MoO3 composites. The PCA showed that composite sensors were able to differentiate Pisco samples according to their variety.

This study aims to determine the potential description of quitter type students in solving an open-ended question in the material of Quadrilateral and Triangle at SMP Negeri 20 Pontianak. The research method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach and a case study research form. The number of subjects in this study was 27 students of class VIII F SMP Negeri 20 Pontianak. The data collection tool used was the Adversity Response Profile (ARP) to get quitter type subjects, open-ended test questions, and interview guides with the help of teaching aids to probe deeper into the potential of quitter-type students. The results of the research on the written test showed that the potential of 2 quitter subjects in solving open-ended questions was still low with a percentage of only 22.22%. However, when interviewed with the help of teaching aids, additional information was obtained that the two quitter subjects showed better potential in solving open-ended questions and were able to provide more than one solution and more than one correct answer.

Abstract Background Besides anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), rheumatoid arthritis patients (RA) often display autoantibody reactivities against other post-translationally modified (PTM) proteins, more specifically carbamylated and acetylated proteins. Immunizing mice with one particular PTM results in an anti-modified protein antibody (AMPA) response recognizing different PTM-antigens. Furthermore, human AMPA, isolated based on their reactivity to one PTM, cross-react with other PTMs. However, it is unclear whether the AMPA-reactivity profile is “fixed” in time or whether consecutive exposure to different PTMs can shape the evolving AMPA response towards a particular PTM. Methods Longitudinally collected serum samples of 8 human individuals at risk of RA and 5 with early RA were tested with ELISA, and titers were analyzed to investigate the evolution of the AMPA responses over time. Mice (13 per immunization group in total) were immunized with acetylated (or carbamylated) protein (ovalbumin) twice or cross-immunized with an acetylated and then a carbamylated protein (or vice versa) and their serum was analyzed for AMPA responses. Results Human data illustrated dynamic changes in AMPA-reactivity profiles in both individuals at risk of RA and in early RA patients. Mice immunized with either solely acetylated or carbamylated ovalbumin (AcOVA or CaOVA) developed reactivity against both acetylated and carbamylated antigens. Irrespective of the PTM-antigen used for the first immunization, a booster immunization with an antigen bearing the other PTM resulted in increased titers to the second/booster PTM. Furthermore, cross-immunization skewed the overall AMPA-response profile towards a relatively higher reactivity against the “booster” PTM. Conclusions The relationship between different reactivities within the AMPA response is dynamic. The initial exposure to a PTM-antigen induces cross-reactive responses that can be boosted by an antigen bearing this or other PTMs, indicating the formation of cross-reactive immunological memory. Upon subsequent exposure to an antigen bearing another type of PTM, the overall reactivity pattern can be skewed towards better recognition of the later encountered PTM. These data might explain temporal differences in the AMPA-response profile and point to the possibility that the PTM responsible for the initiation of the AMPA response may differ from the PTM predominantly recognized later in time.

In India, Corona Virus-2 Disease-2019 (COVID-19) continues to this day, although with subdued intensity, following two major waves of viral infection. Despite ongoing vaccination drives to curb the spread of COVID-19, the potential of the administered vaccines to render immune protection to the general population, and how this compares with the immune potential of natural infection remain unclear. In this study we examined correlates of immune protection (humoral and cell mediated) induced by the two vaccines Covishield and Covaxin, in individuals living in and around Kolkata, India. Additionally, we compared the vaccination induced immune response profile with that of natural infection, evaluating thereby if individuals infected during the first wave retained virus specific immunity. Our results indicate that while Covaxin generates better cell-mediated immunity toward the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 than Covishield, Covishield is more effective than Covaxin in inducing humoral immunity. Both Covishield and Covaxin, however, are more effective toward the wild type virus than the Delta variant. Moreover, the overall immune response resulting from natural infection in and around Kolkata is not only to a certain degree better than that generated by vaccination, especially in the case of the Delta variant, but cell mediated immunity to SARS-CoV-2 also lasts for at least ten months after the viral infection.

Humans can perceive and discriminate vibration frequency, yet the central representation of this fundamental feature is unknown. Using fMRI, we discovered that cortical responses are tuned for vibration frequency. Voxel tuning was biased in a manner that reflects perceptual sensitivity and the response profile of the Pacinian afferent system. These results imply the existence of tuned populations that may encode naturalistic vibrations according to their constituent spectra.

AbstractWe estimate the U.S. temperature response profile (TRP) for COVID-19 and show it is highly sensitive to temperature variation. Replacing the erratic daily death counts U.S. states initially reported with counts based on death certificate date, we build a week-ahead statistical forecasting model that explains most of their daily variation (R2 = 0.97) and isolates COVID-19’s TRP (p < 0.001). These counts, normalized at 31 °C (U.S. mid-summer average), scale up to 160% at 5 °C in the static case where the infection pool is held constant. Positive case counts are substantially more temperature sensitive. When temperatures are declining, dynamic feedback through a growing infection pool can substantially amplify these temperature effects. Our estimated TRP can be incorporated into COVID-related planning exercises and used as an input to SEIR models employed for longer run forecasting. For the former, we show how our TRP is predictive of the realized pattern of growth rates in per capita positive cases across states five months after the end of our sample period. For the latter, we show the variation in herd immunity levels implied by temperature-driven, time-varying R0 series for the Alpha and Delta variants of COVID-19 for several representative states.

AbstractWe review and revisit the predictive processing inspired “Gestalts as predictions” hypothesis. The study of Gestalt phenomena at and below threshold can help clarify the role of higher-order object selective areas and feedback connections in mid-level vision. In two psychophysical experiments assessing manipulations of contrast and configurality we showed that: (1) Gestalt phenomena are robust against saliency manipulations across the psychometric function even below threshold (with the accuracy gains and higher saliency associated with Gestalts being present even around chance performance); and (2) peak differences between Gestalt and control conditions happened around the time where responses to Gestalts are starting to saturate (mimicking the differential contrast response profile of striate vs. extra-striate visual neurons). In addition, Gestalts are associated with steeper psychometric functions in all experiments. We propose that these results reflect the differential engagement of object-selective areas in Gestalt phenomena and of information- or percept-based processing, as opposed to energy- or stimulus-based processing, more generally. In addition, the presence of nonlinearities in the psychometric functions suggest differential top-down modulation of the early visual cortex. We treat this as a proof of principle study, illustrating that classic psychophysics can help assess possible involvement of hierarchical predictive processing in Gestalt phenomena.

In insects, many critical olfactory behaviours are mediated by the large odorant receptor ( Or ) gene family, which determines the response properties of different classes of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). While ORN responses are generally conserved within and between Drosophila species, variant alleles of the D. melanogaster Or22 locus have previously been shown to alter the response profile of an ORN class called ab3A. These alleles show potential clinal variation, suggesting that selection is acting at this locus. Here, we investigated if the changes seen in ab3A responses lead to changes in olfactory-related behaviours. We show that variation at the Or22 locus and in the ab3A neurons are not fully compensated for by other ORNs and lead to overall changes in antennal odorant detection. We further show that this correlates with differences in odorant preference behaviour and with differences in oviposition site preference, with flies that have the chimaeric short allele strongly preferring to oviposit on banana. These findings indicate that variation at the Or22 locus leads to changes in olfactory-driven behaviours, and add support to the idea that the ab3A neurons are of especial importance to the ecology of Drosophila flies.

Introduction: This paper provides an overview of the current immunologic research findings of lymphatic filarial worms, which affect millions of people worldwide. Objectives: This paper aims to discuss the immunologic features of lymphatic filarial worms. It also aims to highlight their potential anti-inflammatory actions and the use of anti-filarial drugs against COVID-19. Methods: A literature review was performed to obtain insights on the immunologic features of lymphatic filarial worms. Results: The CD4+ (Th2) response profile is the main defence against filarial worms. Modulation of human immune responses are primarily mediated by parasite-secreted peptides. Lymphatic filarial worms have anti-inflammatory potentials. Drug repurposing of diethylcarbamazepine, doxycycline, and ivermectin can be looked upon against COVID-19. Conclusion: Lymphatic filarial worms have several immunologic effects on host immune systems, which promote chronic infection and curtail anti-inflammatory responses. Insights in this paper can serve as a guide for the understanding of immunologic aspects of lymphatic filarial worms.
