In this study, we examine a recent sample containing two hawk moth species (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) from Praslin and Mahé, Seychelles. It was widely accepted that the hawk moth species Temnora peckoveri (Butler, 1876) has a disjunctive range covering Madagascar and the Inner Seychelles. However, the Seychelles population of what was thought to be Temnora peckoveri shares a set of diagnostic morphological differences from both this species and T. fumosa (Walker, 1856) in the male genitalia structure. In particular, it remotely resembles Temnora fumosa based on the structure of aedeagus but differs from T. fumosa and T. peckoveri with respect to the harpe shape. Based on this evidence, we describe Temnora fumosa seychellensis Bolotov & Spitsyn ssp. nov. as a subspecies with restricted range,  being endemic to the Inner Seychelles. The range of this subspecies covers Praslin (first record), Mahé, Silhouette, La Digue, Cousine, and Denis. Additionally, we report on recent occurrences of Agrius convolvuli (Linnaeus, 1758) from Praslin (second record) and Mahé. The adult moths were recorded feeding on inflorescences of Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia Baker (Asparagaceae) for the first time. Finally, we present a complete list of Temnora fumosa seychellensis ssp. nov. and Agrius convolvuli occurrences from Seychelles.

Juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JoRRP) is a condition related to HPV 6 and 11 infection which is characterized by the repeated growth of benign exophytic papilloma in the respiratory tract. Disease progression is unpredictable: some children experience minor symptoms, while others require multiple interventions due to florid growth. The aim of this study was to explore the biomarkers of JoRRP severity on a bicentric cohort of forty-eight children. We performed a CISH on the most recent sample of papilloma with a probe targeting the mRNA of the E6 and E7 genes of HPV 6 and 11 and an immunostaining with p16INK4a antibody. For each patient HPV RNA CISH staining was assessed semi-quantitatively to define two scores: 1+, defined as a low staining extent, and 2+, defined as a high staining extent. This series contained 19 patients with a score of 1+ and 29 with a score of 2+. Patients with a score of 2+ had a median of surgical excision (SE) per year that was twice that of patients with a score of 1+ (respectively 6.1 versus 2.8, p = 0.036). We found similar results with the median number of SE the first year. Regarding p16INK4a, all patients were negative. To conclude, HPV RNA CISH might be a biomarker which is predictive of disease aggressiveness in JoRRP, and might help in patient care management.

Temporally spaced genetic data allow for more accurate inference of population genetic parameters and hypothesis testing on the recent action of natural selection. In this work, we develop a novel likelihood-based method for jointly estimating selection coefficient and allele age from time series data of allele frequencies. Our approach is based on a hidden Markov model where the underlying process is a Wright-Fisher diffusion conditioned to survive until the time of the most recent sample. This formulation circumvents the assumption required in existing methods that the allele is created by mutation at a certain low frequency. We calculate the likelihood by numerically solving the resulting Kolmogorov backward equation backward in time while reweighting the solution with the emission probabilities of the observation at each sampling time point. This procedure reduces the two-dimensional numerical search for the maximum of the likelihood surface, for both the selection coefficient and the allele age, to a one-dimensional search over the selection coefficient only. We illustrate through extensive simulations that our method can produce accurate estimates of the selection coefficient and the allele age under both constant and nonconstant demographic histories. We apply our approach to reanalyze ancient DNA data associated with horse base coat colors. We find that ignoring demographic histories or grouping raw samples can significantly bias the inference results.

Background: Metabolomics has gained importance in clinical applications over the last decade. Metabolomics studies are significant because the systemic metabolome is directly affected by disease conditions. Metabolome-based biomarkers are actively being developed for early diagnosis and to indicate the stage of specific diseases. Additionally, understanding the effect of an intervention on a living organism at the molecular level is a crucial strategy for understanding novel or unexpected biological processes. Results: The simultaneous improvements in advanced analytical techniques, sample preparation techniques, computer technology, and databank contents has enabled more valuable scientific information to be gained from metabolomics than ever before. With over 15,000 known endogenous metabolites, there is no single analytical technique capable of analyzing the whole metabolome. However, capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS) is a unique technique used to analyze an important portion of metabolites not accessible by liquid chromatography or gas chromatography techniques. The analytical capability of CE, combined with recent sample preparation techniques focused on extracting polar-ionic compounds, make CE-MS a perfect technique for metabolomic studies. Conclusion: Here, previous reviews of CE-MS based metabolomics are evaluated to highlight recent improvements in this technique. Specifically, we review papers from the last two years (2018 and 2019) on CE-MS based metabolomics. The current situation and the challenges facing metabolomic studies are discussed to reveal the high potential of CE-MS for further studies, especially in biomarker development studies.

Objectives: This study explores the nexus between low self-control and legal cynicism among a recent sample of at-risk youth while accounting for various features of direct and vicarious police stops. Methods: Analyses are based on data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, which employs a national sample of urban-born, at-risk youth. Results: A uniquely potent association between low self-control and legal cynicism emerged across samples with and without exposure to vicarious or direct police stops. Furthermore, among youth exposed to police stops, the link between low self-control and legal cynicism was largely robust to perceptions/features of these stops, including the degree of officer intrusiveness, arrest, perceptions of procedural justice, and youth feelings of social stigma following the stop. Conclusions: Programmatic efforts that both enhance the early development of self-control through mindfulness and curriculum-based interventions (e.g., Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) and facilitate trauma-informed policing may be beneficial in curtailing the development of legal cynicism.

This study reviews the AICPA disciplinary process and examines a recent sample of disciplinary actions taken against practitioners for ethics violations. Trends related to enforcement and disclosure of actions are inspected and additional details are provided based on state codes of conduct. We consider the effects of uniform statewide adoption of the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct for CPAs, as recently encouraged by the AICPA and NASBA. We find 43% of state accounting boards have formally adopted the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, 35% have not adopted the Code and 22% have partially adopted the Code. The three states with the highest number of disciplinary actions are New York, California and Texas, none of which have adopted the Code. Of the top ten states with the greatest number of enforcement actions, only two have formally adopted the Code. The most common type of investigation in the sample is an automatic disciplinary provision by the AICPA. Dispositions for violations appear to be getting more severe, with admonishments declining and settlements, terminations and suspensions taking its place.

Abstract The unpublished zoogeographical views of louse flies from genus Hippobosca deposited in Collection of the Zoological institute of Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, Russia from Transcaucasia are summarized. A total 248 deposited samples and one recent sample belonging to species Hippobosca equina Linnaeus, 1758 and Hippobosca longipennis Fabricius, 1805 from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Southern Caucasus and north-western Iran are presented.

As the high temperatures experienced during the summer of 2018 may become commonplace by 2050, adaptation to higher indoor temperatures while minimising the need for mechanical cooling is required. A thorough understanding of the factors that influence indoor temperatures can enable the design of healthier and safer dwellings under a warming climate. The aim of this paper is to provide further insight into the topic of indoor overheating through the analysis of the largest recent sample of English dwellings, the 2011 Energy Follow-Up Survey, comprised of 823 dwellings. Following the pre-processing stage, the indoor overheating risk of 795 living rooms and 799 bedrooms was quantified using the criteria defined within CIBSE's Technical Memorandum 59. Approximately 2.5% of the dwellings were found to exceed Criterion 1, with this figure approaching 26% when Criterion 2 was considered. Subsequently, the indoor temperatures were standardised against external weather conditions and the correlation of 11 dwelling and 9 household characteristics was examined. Factors such as the main heating system, tenure and occupant vulnerability were all found to have a statistically significant association with the indoor temperatures. Further analysis revealed multiple correlations between household and dwelling characteristics, highlighting the complexity of the indoor overheating problem. Practical application: By applying the criteria in CIBSE's TM59, 26% of the dwellings monitored during the 2011 Energy Follow-Up Survey were found to overheat. Since 2011 was a cool summer and future temperatures are expected to be warmer, even more dwellings are expected to fail these criteria in the future. Multiple dwelling and household characteristics were associated with higher indoor temperatures, including: dwellings with a SAP rating > 70, more recently built and with communal heating. Thus, it is crucial to consider indoor overheating risk at the building design or refurbishment stage to prevent the possible consequences of uncomfortably high indoor temperatures.
