Abstract Recently Microbicidal and micro-static activities of naturally obtained botanicals have been extensively explored, generally in response to the devastating apprehension of consumers towards the safety of edible products. However, scientists are paying more interest in using bio pesticides and phytochemicals that constitute environmentally favorable, non-toxic, long-lasting, and productive substitutes for preventing many hazardous plant pathogens. This research aimed to investigate the antifungal capabilities of sage and tea tree essential oils towards taro leaf blight, the most important cause of worldwide production losses. Using synthetic fungicides is a rapid and effective approach for controlling plant diseases, but it also creates human health risks, environmental threats, and chances of pathogen resistance. The essential oils of sage and tea tree were obtained by microwave-assisted hydro-distillation, and their chemical components were analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy. The main components of the oil were Thujone and Terpinen-4-ol, in sage and tea, respectively. A casual disease agent isolated from symptomatic taro leaves is used as a test fungus and identified as Phytophthora colocasiae. The antifungal properties of both essential oils were evaluated against mycelium, sporangium, zoospores, leaf necrosis, and corm lesions. Repeated experiments showed that the minimum concentrations for obtaining 100% inhibition of mycelium, zoospore germination, sporangia formation, and leaf necrosis were estimated at 2.5 and 5.0 mg/mL of sage and tea tree oils, respectively. Outcomes of this study provide an allusion for the prevention and curation of plant diseases promptly, economically, and environmentally by using phytochemicals and plant essential oil derivatives.

The black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is the widely cultured aquaculture species in Vietnam and worldwide. Production of P. monodon postlarvae still relies on the wild broodstock due to their higher fecundity and larval quality in comparison with the domesticated broodstock. Therefore, the current study applied an RNA-sequencing approach by the Illumina platform to generate the transcriptomic resources for the wild and domesticated females at the previtellogenic stage of ovaries (stage 0). Total clean reads were 20,977,708 for the wild female and 31,185,197 for the domesticated female. De novoassembly was employed to generate 35,870 contigs with an average length of 1,018 bp and N50 length of 1,488 bp. The ratios of contigs possessing significant similarity through annotation across seven databases ranged from 19.74 to 47.77%. Top hit species from BLASTx searches included Hyalella azteca, Cryptotermes secundus, Zootermopsis nevadensis, followed by Penaeus sp.. We identified a total of 5,788 differentially expressed transcripts between the ovaries of wild and domesticated shrimps. The differentially expressed transcripts were further enriched according to the classification terms of Gene Ontology (GO). Results of GO enrichment analysis in the wild female indicated that many genes such as hemolymph clottable, peritrophin, ecdysteroid were up-regulated while the following genes, including serine protease, alpha-L-fucosidase-like, actin, catenin alpha were down-regulated. The current study provides more transcriptomic resources for the reproductive trait in P. monodon. These resources are potentially applied for the improvement of reproduction in the domesticated shrimp.

Worldwide production of wooden pallets continually increases, and therefore in future higher number of damaged pallets need to be recycled. One way to conveniently recycle pallets is their use for the production of particleboards (PBs). The 3-layer PBs, bonded with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, were prepared in laboratory conditions using particles from fresh spruce logs (FSL) and recycled spruce pallets (RSP) in mutual weight ratios of 100:0, 80:20, 50:50 and 0:100. Particles from RSP did not affect the moisture properties of PBs, i.e., the thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA). The mechanical properties of PBs based on particles from RSP significantly worsened: the modulus of rupture (MOR) in bending from 14.6 MPa up to 10 MPa, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending from 2616 MPa up to 2012 MPa, and the internal bond (IB) from 0.79 MPa up to 0.61 MPa. Particles from RSP had only a slight negative effect on the decay resistance of PBs to the brown-rot fungus Serpula lacrymans, while their presence in surfaces of PBs did not affect the growth activity of moulds at all.

Drought affects the rainfed groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)  at different phases of development and it is the serious threats on groundnut productivity causing losses than any other abiotic factor under rainfed agriculture. In the world's semiarid regions, groundnut accounts for 90% of worldwide production. Drought mainly affects the pace and pattern of nutrient and water intake from the soil, affecting the architecture of the groundnut root system. Plant selections with desirable root trait have been a major focus in developing drought resistant Groundnut cultivars. In 2019, 60 groundnut genotypes were cultivated in root block design with two different soil water treatments, as well as in the field during the year under same circumstances. The purpose of this study was to see how different groundnut cultivars fared in terms of yield, yield contributing features, root characters, and their relationships with drought tolerance. Drought resistant genotypes had thicker roots, larger roots, and a deeper root system than susceptible genotypes. Recent series in groundnut genotypes of 60 numbers were sown during kharif 2019 (july-september) under rainfed condition (It includes life irrigation and rainfall received during cropping season). Groundnut genotypes were semi spreading with the duration of 110-120 days. Observation on root morphological character viz., roots length, root volume after 20 days of stress imposition of the crop and yield parameters were observed at the harvest. Among the 60 genotypes, 20 genotypes (VG 17008, VG 17046, VG 18005, VG 18102, VG 18077, VG 19572, VG 19709, VG 18111, VG19561, VG19576, VG 19620, VG 19681, VG 19688 etc.,) similarly, yield character were observed for 60 genotypes and all the genotypes given above recorded higher value in Total number of pods per plant, Number of double seeded pods per plant, Pod yield per plant, Harvest index and Total dry matter production. The methods used in this study identified correlation between yield character and root characters. Groundnut genotypes by assessing yield metrics and their relationship with root trait. These findings lay the groundwork for future study aimed at deciphering the molecular pathways underpinning Groundnut drought resistance.

Abstract Wearing a face mask has become a necessity following the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, where its effectiveness in containing the pandemic has been confirmed. Nevertheless, the pandemic has revealed major deficiencies in the ability to manufacture and ramp up worldwide production of efficient surgical-grade face masks. As a result, many researchers have focused their efforts on the development of low cost, smart and effective face covers. In this article, following a short introduction concerning face mask requirements, the different nanotechnology-enabled techniques for achieving better protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus are reviewed, including the development of nanoporous and nanofibrous membranes in addition to triboelectric nanogenerators based masks, which can filter the virus using various mechanisms such as straining, electrostatic attraction and electrocution. The development of nanomaterials-based mask coatings to achieve virus repellent and sterilizing capabilities, including antiviral, hydrophobic and photothermal features are also discussed. Finally, the usability of nanotechnology-enabled face masks is discussed and compared with that of current commercial-grade N95 masks. To conclude, we highlight the challenges associated with the quick transfer of nanomaterials-enabled face masks and provide an overall outlook of the importance of nanotechnology in counteracting the COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract— The growing worldwide production of synthetic plastics leads to increased amounts of plastic pollution. Even though microbial degradation of plastics is known to be a very slow process, this capacity has been found in many bacteria, including invertebrate symbionts, and microscopic fungi. Research in this field has been mostly focused on microbial degradation of polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Quite an arsenal of different methods is available today for detecting processes of plastic degradation and measuring their rates. Given the lack of generally accepted protocols, it is difficult to compare results presented by different authors. PET degradation by recombinant hydrolases from thermophilic actinobacteria happens to be the most efficient among the currently known plastic degradation processes. Various approaches to accelerating microbial plastic degradation are also discussed.

Biosolids (BS) are organic dry matter produced from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The current yearly worldwide production of BS is estimated to be around 100–125 million tons and is expected to continuously increase to around 150–200 million tons by 2025. Wastewater treatment industries across the globe strive to achieve a green and sustainable manufacturing base for the management of enormous amounts of municipal BS, which are rich in nutrients and organic dry matter along with contaminants. The management of these organic-rich wastes through environmentally friendly recovery technologies is a major challenge. The need to improve waste biomass disposal by biological development and develop more economically viable processes has led to a focus on the transformation of waste resources into value-added products (VAP). This paper assesses the leading disposal methods (based on volume and contaminant reduction) and reviews the state of biotechnological processes for VAP recovery from municipal wastewater sludge (untreated solid waste residual) and BS (stabilized solid waste which meets criteria for its use in land). A review of the anaerobic and aerobic digestion processes is presented to provide a holistic overview of this growing research field. Furthermore, the paper also sheds light on the pollutant reduction and resource recovery approaches for enzymes, bioflocculants, bioplastics, biopesticides, and biogas as a mean to represent BS as a potential opportunity for WWTPs. However, only a few technologies have been implemented for VAP resource recovery and a shift from WWTPs to waste resource recovery facilities is still far from being achieved.

AbstractThe annual worldwide production of coffee exceeds 10 million tons, and more than 90% of this production is waste, including the husk. On the other hand, plastic consumption increases every year, and sustainable alternatives are necessary to decrease it. This work arises to solve these two problems, and seeks to produce products at an industrial level from polyethylene/coffee husk eco-composites. Both Low Density Polyethylene and High Density Polyethylene were used, and the amounts of coffee husk added as filler were 20 and 40 wt%. The composites were characterized by different morphological, thermal and mechanical techniques. Scanning Electron Microscopy images showed husk particles embedded in the polymer matrix, but with some gaps between the polymer and the filler, because no compatibilizer agent was used. The addition of large amounts of natural filler negatively affected the tensile strength and elongation at break, but increases eco-composites crystallinity, and hence, their Young modulus and hardness. The industrial applicability of the eco-composites was verified through the production of five different consumer products by extrusion and injection processes, using mixtures with 40 wt% coffee husks. All products were obtained without significant defects. If only 3.25 wt% of the polyethylene products produced each year in Colombia did so with the eco-composites developed in this work, all the coffee husk produced in the country would be used, and the emission of about 5.390 million m3 of greenhouse gases would be avoided.

Abstract Industrial effluents are usually one of the major industries polluting the environment and surface water. It is estimated that the worldwide production of dyes is about 70 tons/year. To overcome this problem, innovative processes are suggested for the treatment of industrial effluents containing dyes and heavy metals. The goal of the processes is often to reduce the toxicity of these pollutants in order to meet treatment standards. Recently, great attention has been paid to innovative processes for physical and chemical removal techniques such as adsorption on new adsorbents, biomass adsorption, membrane filtration, irradiation, and electrochemical coagulation. In this study, the application of adsorbents in the adsorption process to remove dye pollutants from industrial effluents has been studied. Factors affecting dye adsorption such as pH, temperature, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent amount are also presented. The obtained results revealed that more than 80% of the dye adsorption on the surface of adsorbents are endothermic processes and more than 95% of the processes obey the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck is a very common cultivar belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is largely diffused in several areas of the world characterized by mild to warm climate conditions. Its abundant worldwide production (up to 107 Tons. per year) and consumption both as the edible part of the fruit and as several types of derivative products imply the production of a huge amount of waste, such as the fruit pomace. Several ways of recycling this material have been developed in recent years: employment as fertilizer, fodder ingredient, and even cloth material. However, the chemical added value of Citrus sinensis peel has been underestimated despite the diversified and significant content of useful chemicals, such as polyphenols, polymethoxylated phenols, glycosylated flavonoids, volatile and non-volatile terpenoids, pectins, enzymes, etc. This work aims to highlight the outstanding chemical potential of Citrus sinensis peel.
