Aim: To determine the frequency of hypomagnesaemia in children with hypocalcemic seizures. Study Design:  Cross sectional descriptive study. Place and Duration: Department of Pediatrics, Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro / Hyderabad. From November 2017 to April 2018. Methodology: Children (06 months to 06 years age and of either gender) having Two or more than two hypocalcemic seizures within 12 hours duration were included in the study . The children with hypocalcemic seizure were assessed for magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesaemia). The evaluation of hypomagnesaemia was done according to the cut off / reference values for hypomagnesaemia (<1.8 mg/dl). The data was collected on pre-structured proforma (attached). Results: Total 147 children with hypocalcemic seizures were taken in this study, among them 49 (33.3%) patients had found low magnesium level and 98 (54.4%) patients had normal magnesium level. Conclusion: Seizures associated with hypocalcaemia is one of the common type of convulsion in children. In our study, a positive relation was found between low levels of serum magnesium and hypocalcemic seizures.

Introduction: Circulating vitamin D concentrations have been associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Magnesium has also been reported to be associated with lower T2D risk. Besides, magnesium is an essential cofactor for vitamin D activation. However, the effect of dietary magnesium intake on the association between vitamin D and the risk of T2D has not been studied comprehensively. Therefore, we designed this cross-sectional study to assess the effect modification of magnesium intake on the association between vitamin D and risk of T2D.Research Design and Methods: The present study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) continuously from 2007 to 2014, involving 10,249 participants. By having stratified participants based on magnesium intake category (low magnesium intake &lt;267 mg/day; high magnesium intake: ≥267 mg/day), we further evaluated the difference (interaction test) between the relationship of vitamin D with the risk of T2D among low magnesium intake participants and high magnesium intake participants using weighted multivariable logistic regression.Results: In this cross-sectional study, the association of serum vitamin D with the incidence of T2D appeared to differ between the low magnesium intake group and the high magnesium intake group (OR: 0.968, 95%Cl: 0.919–1.02 vs. OR: 0.925, 95%Cl: 0.883–0.97). Furthermore, there was evidence of interaction between vitamin D levels and magnesium intake on decreasing the incidence of T2D (p-value for interaction = 0.001).Conclusions: The results of our study indicated that magnesium intake might affect the association of serum vitamin D with the risk of T2D. Such a finding requires further randomized controlled trials to provide more evidence.

The work presented sought to determine the effects of Mg/Ca ratios in solution have on Mg partitioning (KMg) between precipitated abiotic low-Mg calcite and solution. Experiments were set up so that Mg/Ca in precipitated abiotic calcite would match the Mg/Ca in planktonic foraminifera. This research intended to investigate the effect of Mg/Ca(Fluid) on KMg when the molar value of Mg/Ca(Fluid) was below 0.5, which is below the previously reported Mg/Ca range. The values of pH, salinity, and aqueous Mg/Ca were monitored during calcite precipitation, and Mg/Ca of calcite was determined at the end of experiments. Partition coefficients of Mg were evaluated as a ratio of Mg/Ca in calcite to the averaged ratio of aqueous Mg/Ca for each experiment.

The purpose of this article was to present the theory of the possibility of using limestone sorbents containing carbonate minerals with increased Mg content in processes of flue gas desulfurization in power stations. Data obtained as a result of the conducted research show that the analyzed Triassic (Muschelkalk) limestones of the south-west part of Poland are built of the following carbonate minerals: low magnesium calcite, high magnesium calcite, dolomite and huntite. These carbonate minerals are characterized by various magnesium contents. The increased content of magnesium in the sorbent has a positive effect on the technological process of flue gas desulfurization using the dry method, especially in the case of desulfurization with the application of Fluidized Bed Reactors. The positive influence of magnesium’s presence in sorbent in the desulfurization process is connected with the decarbonization of carbonate phases with magnesium at temperatures similar to the dolomite decarbonization temperatures, which are, thus, lower than typical for low magnesium calcite. The process would be easier because the structure of a solid solution containing magnesium ions, with a smaller ion radius to calcium ions, is unstable and the decomposition of these phases runs easier and faster. Therefore, the desulfurization process starts earlier and is more effective.

Purple butter clam (Saxidomus purpuratus) is an economically important bivalve shellfish. This species belongs to the subclass Heterodonta that diverged in calcite seas with low magnesium concentrations. We sequenced and assembled its genome and performed an evolutionary comparative analysis. A total of 911 Mb assembly of S. purpuratus was anchored into 19 chromosomes and a total of 48,090 protein-coding genes were predicted. We identified its repeat-based expanded genes that are associated with the sodium/potassium-exchange ATPase complex. In addition, different types of ion transporters were enriched in the common ancestor of Heterodonta (calcium, sulfate, and lipid transporters) and the specific evolution of S. purpuratus (calcium and sodium transporters). These differences seem to be related to the divergence times of Heterodonta (calcitic sea) and Veneraidea (aragonitic sea). Furthermore, we analyzed the evolution of scavenger receptor (SR) proteins in S. purpuratus, which are involved in a wide range of immune responses, and compared them to the closely related Cyclina sinensis. We showed that a small number of SR proteins, exhibited collinearity between the two genomes, which is indicative of independent gene evolution. Our genomic study provides an evolutionary perspective on the genetic diversity of bivalves and their adaptation to historical changes in the marine environment.

Evidence supports an association between low magnesium (Mg) intake and coronary heart disease and between Mg intake and endothelial function. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of one week of Mg supplementation on endothelial function, assessed by flow mediated dilatation (FMD). Nineteen healthy men and women completed this cross-over pilot study in which participants were randomised to take an over-the-counter magnesium supplement for one week or to follow their usual diet. Weight, FMD and blood pressure (BP) were taken on completion of each intervention and 24 h urine collections and blood samples were taken to assess compliance. Baseline serum Mg was within normal range for all participants. Urinary Mg and urinary magnesium-creatinine ratio (Mg/Cr) significantly increased between interventions, (p = 0.03, p = 0.005, respectively). No significant differences in FMD or BP were found between the interventions. A significant negative correlation was seen between age and FMD (r = −0.496, p = 0.031). When adjusted for age, saturated fat was negatively associated with FMD (p = 0.045). One week of Mg supplementation did not improve FMD in a healthy population.

Abstract The results of researches of the selected trace elements: Ti, Sr, Ba, Zn, and also Cr, Ni, Cu, Zr, Mo, Pb, Rb, Mn, Na, K, P, Y and REE (REY) content were presented in this article. The elements were measured in the carbonate minerals of Muschelkalk (Middle Triassic) limestones of the Opole Silesia in Poland, using two methods: ICP MS spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence. These methods are characterized by very high precision and sensitivity of measurements. The results of researches show that the content of analyzed trace elements varies in from value below 1 ppm up to some hundreds ppm. However, the highest contents were measured for strontium and barium, elements characteristic for aragonite carbonate phase which is transformed such as high-Mg calcite into low magnesium calcite during diagenesis. So as Sr and Ba indicate the presence of aragonite in the primary carbonate material. The other trace elements probably form substitutions in clay or carbonate minerals. Some of trace elements such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Mo, Ni may also be associated with sulfide minerals and Ti, Cr, Mn, with oxides. Some measured REY elements- Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er and Y are found in the rocks in very small quantities. So their content is really very low. It varies in from value below 1 ppm up to 6 ppm. REY usually substitute Ca ions in calcite.
