AbstractFocusing on the characteristics of public participation and large group decision making of major livelihood projects, this paper proposes a multi-agent linguistic-style large group decision-making method with the consideration of public expectations. Firstly, based on the discrimination degree of evaluating information, the comprehensive weight of each attribute is calculated with the principle of maximum entropy. Secondly, the expert preference information for different alternatives is clustered and several aggregations are formed. Thirdly, the preference conflict level of experts' group for each alternative is calculated, and a conflict-oriented experts' aggregation weight optimization model is constructed to ensure the effectiveness of conflict resolution. Fourthly, the public group's satisfaction is determined with the expectation distribution of public’s and the expert group's preference, so as to obtain the sorting result of the decision alternatives. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method are verified by method comparison.

Jypp, Dompa and Jackson Pollock: Narratives on place, urban vernaculars, and upper class at a prestigious upper secondary school. Labelling a linguistic style by appointing it to certain groups of speakers and where they live can be a deeply problematic enterprise as both identities, language use and space become fixed and limited. In Sweden the speech style called Rinkeby Swedish (RS) has become an icon of ethnic Otherness, educational failure, and of an aggressive sexist and homophobic masculinity – ascribed to a fixed locality in the outskirts of the big cities. In this paper we have turned our gaze towards a place that have typically not been associated with RS before: a Stockholm elite school. The analysis reveals how a group of students, illustrated by how the participant Wille, perform authenticity and indexically anchor their linguistic practices and epistemics in various linguistic contexts. In a case study, we explore how the participants talk about and use not one but many different linguistic styles. We argue that the participants employ these styles as resources to comment on locality as well as social hierarchies in the school and the society at large.

PurposeDrawing on the dual process theory and the cultural dimension of power distance, the current research investigates the impact of a specific service clue—the linguistic style of address forms (salutation) in hotel manager letters to guests—on customer satisfaction in a hotel context in Ecuador.Design/methodology/approachFollowing an experimental design research approach, this research conducted a series of two studies to examine how customers' cultural values (high vs low power distance), linguistic style of address forms (formal vs casual) and service valence (service success vs service failure) together influenced customer satisfaction. Specifically, Study 1 examined the service success condition, and Study 2 investigated the service failure condition.FindingsThe research results show that, in the service success condition, customers follow their distinct cultural orientations (high vs low power distance) when responding to the different linguistic styles (formal vs casual). On the other hand, in the service failure situation, as customers desire for expressions of respect that can be reflected in a formal address form, the level of satisfaction is lower when the casual address form is used in guest communications, regardless of customers' cultural orientations in power distance.Originality/valueThis research adds to existing cross-cultural service research, particularly in terms of service valence, and provides practical implications for enhancing service providers' cultural awareness and sociolinguistic competence to effectively communicate with customers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Live-stream shopping is developing rapidly, but the sales levels of live streaming products vary by different hosts. How to increase the sales volume of live streaming products has become a problem. Consumers’ purchase behavior in live streaming is determined by some subjective factors, and the persuasiveness of linguistic style affects this subjective judgment to a certain extent. Therefore, the persuasiveness of the hosts’ linguistic style will lead to changes in consumers’ purchase intentions, which will affect the sales volume of products sold in the live streaming. Based on Hovland’s persuasion model, Aristotle’s rhetoric skills, text analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic extraction model and grounded theory, this study divides the host’s linguistic persuasive style in the social e-commerce environment into five types: appealing to personality, appealing to logic, appealing to emotion, appealing to reward, and appealing to exaggeration. Combined with the sales volume of the product, we establish a regression model, and obtain the influence results of the host’s various linguistic persuasive styles on the sales of live streaming products. The results show that: the linguistic persuasive style of appealing to personality has the greatest positive impact on the sales volume of live broadcast products, but the linguistic style of appealing to logic has a negative impact. Interestingly, the same linguistic style has different effects for different types of products: the linguistic style of appealing to exaggeration has a negative effect on the sales volume of apparel products, but it has a positive influence on the sales volume of digital electrical products. Therefore, different linguistic styles should be used for different product types.

News Editing is the clearest coding, which reflects the writer's behavior of the editor who linguistically, socially, or culturally edits and deviates some of the source language aspects. It, furthermore, refers to the writer’s competence of using an influential linguistic style and preserving the SL norms and policies. At the same time, editing news presents a new horizon within a different political framework into TL. The problem of news editing of the same TV in Arabic and English editions lies in discrepancies in meanings; intentional deviation and politics. For instance, BBC, which broadcasts in Arabic, has a different editing from its English edition. This study ascribes such differences to the different socio-cultural and political strategies adopted by the writer. The primary objectives of the study are: Finding out the political reasons behind the discrepancy and the intentional deviation in news editing. Identifying the political attitude of the original editor and the political attitude of the editor. The data set in this study consisted of “TWO” edited news editing (1 from English into Arabic) and (1 from Arabic into English). These two news writings have been broadcasted on BBC English & Arabic editions. A critical-stylistic analysis has been conducted by applying House’s (2001) model of TQA.

Studying language through naturally-occurring data is easily feasible nowadays thanks to the use of concordancers. Using the software package AntConc by Laurence Anthony, the author approaches the linguistic style of Pope Francis in four of his apostolic exhortations. His lexical frequencies are compared to those of Venerable Fr. Tomás Morales, a Spanish Jesuit (1908–1994) who is considered a prophet of our time for anticipating the teachings of the Second Vatican Council twenty years beforehand. The two have several aspects in common, mainly in making laypeople aware of the universal call to sanctity and the missionary responsibility acquired in baptism. The results of the comparison show a similarity in the lexical choices. The article’s conclusions and implications are considered in relation to the word in education and in evangelization.
