Three calves were submitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for diagnostic evaluation following an abrupt increase in morbidity and mortality in a calf herd associated with epistaxis and widespread hemorrhage. Each of the submitted calves had moderate-to-severe hemorrhage within various tissues and body cavities, including the thymus, subcutaneous region of the neck, mediastinum, lungs, pericardial sac, heart, spleen, perirenal fat, urinary bladder, and skeletal muscle, including the diaphragm. An anticoagulant rodenticide screen was performed on the livers of each calf. Significant concentrations of chlorophacinone were detected at 4.2, 3.6, and 2.9 ppm in liver. Multiple piles and an open pail of white powdery material were present within the facility in which the calves were housed and were identified as the sources of chlorophacinone. Acute hemorrhage and death occurred in fourteen 1.5-mo-old, crossbred calves following ingestion of the vitamin K antagonist chlorophacinone.

Background. Para and perirenal fat is a fat pad surrounding the kidneys. Recent studies showed the association between para and perirenal fat and cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis and hypertension. We aimed to assess the relationship between para-perirenal ultrasonographic fat thickness and serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level and cholesterol efflux capacity of HDL in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods. We recruited 58 subjects with T2DM and collected anthropometric indices including height, weight, waist circumference, and other clinical data. Para-perirenal ultrasonographic fat thickness (PUFT) was measured via ultrasound. Serum lipid profile and other metabolic indices were determined as well. Correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed to analyze the relationship between PUFT and HDL level and cholesterol efflux capacity in all patients and subgroups. Results. Patients with higher PUFT have lower serum HDL level but increased cholesterol efflux capacity. Further analysis showed that PUFT negatively correlated with the serum HDL level in all patients, with no difference in groups divided by body mass index (BMI). In addition, PUFT was positively correlated with cholesterol efflux capacity in all patients. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed an independent association of PUFT and serum HDL level and cholesterol efflux capacity. Conclusions. PUFT is closely correlated with the serum HDL level and cholesterol efflux capacity in patients with T2DM.

Objective: To examine the relation between perirenal fat volume, which is one of the visceral fat measurements, and kidney stones. Method: 169 patients admitted to our clinic between January 2018 and May 2021 were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups as Control Group and Unilateral Kidney Stone Group (88 patients with unilateral kidney stones). Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography scans were used to measure perirenal fat volume and the results were transferred to workstations. The total perirenal fat volumes in the bilateral kidneys of patients were compared between the two groups. The perirenal fat volume in stone-bearing and non-stone bearing kidneys of patients were also compared. Results: The total perirenal fat volume was higher in the Unilateral Kidney Stone Group than in the other groups and the perirenal fat volume of the patients in this group was higher in the stone bearing kidney (295.6±164.4cm3) than in the non-stone bearing kidney (273.1±179.6cm3). In the ROC analysis, it was concluded that total perirenal fat volume>387cm3 increased the risk of kidney stones. Presence of hypertension, presence of hyperlipidemia and total perirenal fat volume>387cm3 were found to be independent risk factors for the presence of kidney stones. Conclusion: Perirenal fat volume is higher in stone bearing kidneys compared to non-stone bearing kidneys. Therefore, stone formation in a kidney is directly related to the perirenal fat volume of that kidney. Also, total perirenal fat volume>387cm3 increases the risk of kidney stones independently of body mass index, and predicts it better.

Abstract Objective Increasing evidences suggested that perirenal fat thickness (PrFT) was associated with metabolic risk factors, this study aimed to assess the association between PrFT with components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and explore the value of PrFT in predicting MetS among Newly-Diagnosed type 2 diabetes(T2DM). Method A total of 445 patients with Newly-Diagnosed T2DM from southern China were enrolled into this study. Demographic and anthropometric information were collected. PrFT was evaluated by CT scanning on Revolution VCT 64. Binomial logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were conducted to assess the value and optimal cutoff of PrFT for predicting MetS divided by sex. Results The prevalence of MetS was 58.2% in Newly-Diagnosed T2DM.Correlation analysis showed that PrFT was significantly correlated with metabolic risk factors (BMI, WC, TG, HDL-c, SBP, DBP, UA and HOMA-IR). PrFT was also shown to be independently associated with MetS after adjustment for other confounders, the ORs(95%CI) were 1.33(1.01~1.74) in men and 1.53(1.08~2.17) in women(P<0.05). ROC curves showed a good predictive value of PrFT for MetS, the the areas under the curve of ROC values of PrFT predicting MetS were 0.895(95% CI 0.852~0.939) in men and 0.910(95% CI 0.876~0.953) in women(P<0.001). The optimal cut-off values of PrFT were 14.6 mm (sensitivity: 83.8%, specificity: 89.6%) for men and 13.1 mm (sensitivity: 87.6%, specificity: 91.1%) for women. Conclusions PrFT was significantly independent with MetS and showed a powerful predictive value for MetS, which suggested PrFT could be a potential indicator to help clinicians to screen high-risk groups in Newly-Diagnosed T2DM. Clinical Trial Registration: This study was registered in Clinical Trials. Gov (ChiCTR2100052032).

This work was carried out to study the glycerin and cashew and castor oils inclusion as natural additives on fatty acid composition of perirenal fat, subcutaneous fat and muscle Longissimus thoracis of Purunã bulls finished in feedlot for 252 days. A total of 32 Purunã bulls (11-12 ± 2.0 months; 202.8 ± 14.4 kg) were finished in feedlot with 4 diets (n = 8): CONT – basal diet; VOIL – basal diet and inclusion of vegetable oils (3 g/animal/day); GLYC – basal diet and inclusion of glycerin (20.1% glycerin in DM basis); GLVO – basal diet and inclusion of glycerin (20.1% glycerin in DM basis) and vegetal oils (3 g/animal/day). Glycerin inclusion reduced SFA, MUFA and PUFA levels in the diets. Glycerin and vegetable oils inclusion in the diets of bulls finished in feedlot did not change (P > 0.05) lauric, myristic, palmitic, docosanoic, n-7-tetradecenoic, palmitoleic, n-11 trans-vaccenic, oleic, n-7 cis-vaccenic, cis-9, t11 – CLA, n-3 docosapentaenoic and n-3 docosahexaenoic fatty acids levels in perirenal fat, subcutaneous fat and Longissimus thoracis muscle of bulls finished in feedlot. However, glycerin inclusion in the diets increased (P < 0.05) pentadecanoic, margaric and n-9, cis-10 heptadecanoic fatty acids levels when compared of perirenal fat, subcutaneous fat and Longissimus thoracis muscle of bulls fed CONT and VOIL diets. On the other hand, glycerin inclusion decreased (P < 0.05) linoleic fatty acid in perirenal fat, subcutaneous fat and Longissimus thoracis muscle in comparison of CONT and VOIL diets. Glycerin and vegetables oils inclusion in the diets did not alter (P > 0.05) SFA and MUFA levels in perirenal fat from bulls fed four diets. The PUFA, n-6 and n-3 levels and PUFA:SFA and n-6:n-3 ratios were similar (P > 0.05) between perirenal fat of bulls fed CONT and VOIL diets and greater (P < 0.05) when compared of perirenal fat from bulls fed GLYC and GLVO diets. SFA, MUFA levels and n-6 and n-3 ratios were similar (P > 0.05) among all diets. PUFA and MUFA levels in fat subcutaneous and n-6:n3 ratio were similar (P > 0.05) between GLYC and GLVO diets, but greater than CONT and GLYC diets. Total fatty acids sum levels in Longissimus thoracis muscle were similar (P > 0.05) among bulls from all diets, except the lowest levels in bulls from GLYC and GLVO diets in comparison to CONT and VOIL diets. In conclusion glycerin inclusion in the diets modifies fatty acids in fat and muscle of bulls finished in feed-lot.

Background Obesity is known as a common risk factor for osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Perirenal fat, surrounding the kidneys, has been reported to be unique in anatomy and biological functions. This study aimed to explore the relationship between perirenal fat and bone metabolism in patients with T2DM. Methods A total of 234 patients with T2DM were recruited from September 2019 to December 2019 in the cross-sectional study. The biochemical parameters and bone turnover markers (BTMs) were determined in all participants. Perirenal fat thickness (PrFT) was performed by ultrasounds via a duplex Doppler apparatus. Associations between PrFT and bone metabolism index were determined via correlation analysis and regression models. Results The PrFT was significantly correlated with β-C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen (β-CTX) (r = −0.14, P < 0.036), parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (r = −0.18, P ≤ 0.006), and 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) (r = −0.14, P = 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the association of PrFT and β-CTX (β = −0.136, P = 0.042) was independent of other variables. Conclusion This study showed a negative and independent association between PrFT and β-CTX in subjects with T2DM, suggesting a possible role of PrFT in bone metabolism. Follow-up studies and further research are necessary to validate the associations and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
