Abstract Beef cows and their progeny were used to evaluate the effects of supplementing organic-complexed or inorganic Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn during gestation: on offspring reared as replacement heifers or feeder cattle. Non-lactating, pregnant beef cows (n = 190) were ranked by parity, pregnancy type, body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS), at 117 ± 2.2 d of gestation (d 0) and assigned to receive a supplement containing: 1) sulfate sources of Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn (INR; n = 95) or 2) an organic complexed source of Cu, Mn, Co, and Zn (AAC; Availa®4; Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN; n = 95). From d 0 to calving, cows were maintained in a single pasture and individually offered treatments three times a week. Calves were weaned at 6 mo of age (d 367) and preconditioned for 45-d. Heifer puberty status was verified weekly (d 437 to d 619) based on plasma progesterone concentrations. Steer calves were shipped to a commercial feedlot on d 493, where they were managed as a single group until slaughter (d 724). Plasma cortisol concentration was greater (P = 0.05) in AAC calves at weaning but tended to be less (P = 0.10) on d 370 compared with INR calves. Mean plasma haptoglobin concentration was greater (P = 0.03) in INR vs. AAC calves during preconditioning, and no treatment effects were noted (P = 0.76) for preconditioning average daily gain (ADG). Puberty attainment was hastened in AAC heifers during the experiment (treatment × day; P < 0.01), despite similar (P = 0.39) ADG between treatments from d 412 to 620. No treatment effects were detected (P ≥ 0.24) for steer ADG from d 412 until slaughter, nor for carcass quality traits. Therefore, supplementing Co, Cu, Zn, and Mn as organic complexed instead of sulfate sources to beef cows during the last 5 mo of gestation did not improve performance of steer progeny until slaughter, but hastened puberty attainment in female progeny reared as replacement heifers.

BackgroundDepression and anxiety are prevalent among women with uterine fibroids (UF). The rate of mental health diagnoses in women with UF has not been studied.MethodsWomen aged 18–50 years with diagnosed UF were identified in the Optum Clinformatics commercial insurance claims database (OptumInsight, Eden Prairie, Minnesota) from 1 May 2000 to 31 March 2020 (n=313 754) and were matched 1:2 on age and calendar time to women without (n=627 539). Cox proportional hazards models estimated HRs and 95% CIs between UF and diagnosed depression, anxiety and self-directed violence, adjusting for demographics and comorbidities. Among women with diagnosed UF, the association between hysterectomy and mental health outcomes was estimated.ResultsAfter adjusting for confounders, women with diagnosed UF had a higher rate of depression (HR: 1.12; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.13), anxiety (HR: 1.12; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.13) and self-directed violence (HR: 1.46; 95% CI 1.29 to 1.64) than women without. Among women with pain symptoms and heavy menstrual bleeding, the HR comparing women with diagnosed UF to women without was 1.21 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.25) for depression, 1.18 (95% CI 1.15 to 1.21) for anxiety and 1.68 (95% CI 1.35 to 2.09) for self-directed violence. Among women with diagnosed UF, the HR comparing women who underwent a hysterectomy to women who did not was 1.22 (95% CI 1.17 to 1.27) for depression, 1.13 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.17) for anxiety and 1.86 (95% CI 1.39 to 2.49) for self-directed violence.ConclusionsRates of depression, anxiety and self-directed violence were higher among women with diagnosed UF, particularly among those who experienced pain symptoms or who underwent hysterectomy.

Abstract The objective was to determine effects of interlocking rubber floor matting in slatted indoor cattle feeding facilities on cattle locomotion. In experiment 1, Fall-born Angus × Simmental steers (N = 206; BW = 228 ± 34 kg) were blocked by weight and assigned to 32 pens. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: new Max Grip Animat matting (MG), new Animat Pebble matting (PEB), old Animat Pebble matting (OLD), and no matting/concrete slating (CONC). Steers were fed a common diet for 209 d with an average stocking density of 3.70 m2 per steer. Locomotion scores were assigned by two trained staff using a 0–3 scale of the Step-Up® Locomotion Scoring System (Zinpro, Eden Prairie, MN) throughout both experiments. There was no treatment by day interaction (P = 0.88) observed. Treatment affected (P < 0.01) locomotion scores with CONC being the greatest and MG, PEB, and OLD being lesser and not different from each other. Locomotion scores also increased (P < 0.01) over time. In experiment 2, Fall-born Angus × Simmental steers (n = 189; BW = 352 ± 43 kg) were blocked by weight and assigned to 21 pens. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: new Animat Pebble matting (PEB2), old Animat Pebble matting (OLD2), or no matting/concrete slating (CONC2). Steers were fed a common diet for 152 d with an average stocking density of 2.64 m2 per steer. There was no treatment by day interaction (P = 0.42) observed. However, both treatment and day affected (P ≤ 0.02) locomotion scores. Steers on CONC2 had the greatest locomotion score, while PEB2 and OLD2 were not different from each other. Locomotion scores were the greatest on d 152. Overall, results suggest new and old rubber floor matting improved locomotion scores of feedlot steers in slatted indoor cattle feeding facilities.

Additive manufacturing machines, based on the multimaterial jetting technology, are widely used for three-dimensional (3D) printing of sophisticated medical models, which are aimed to be used for preoperative planning and surgical training. Gaining knowledge of process-related influences on mechanical and dimensional properties of 3D-printed parts makes up an essential basis for the design and manufacture of medical models. There are few studies on characterization of multimaterial parts, and those are limited to tests that are not based on standardized methods. Within the scope of this work, mechanical and dimensional investigations were performed on multimaterial parts that were printed using an Objet500–Connex3 3D printer (Stratasys Ltd., Minnesota, Eden Prairie, MN, USA). Among test methods listed in DIN EN ISO 17296-3, tensile tests were chosen for mechanical characterization. In the tensile tests, combinations of four different materials (Tango+, VeroClear, VeroPureWhite, MED610) were tested in three build orientations (XY, YX, ZX). To investigate the orientation-dependent printing accuracy, the tensile specimens were further checked for their dimensional accuracy. Statistically significant variations in the mechanical properties were found between different orientation levels. In general, specimens printed in XY orientation show higher tensile strength than YX- and ZX-oriented specimens. The tensile moduli determined are in the range from 0.2 to 2,500 MPa and compare well with the tensile moduli found in soft biological tissues. Dimensional deviations were found highest for the length of ZX-oriented tensile specimens. For this orientation level, it could be observed that multimaterial specimens, which contain higher percentage of the soft material Tango+, are characterized by higher shrinkage. For tensile specimens printed from the pure photopolymer Tango+, a shrinkage of 4.6% in length was determined. In summary, it was found that with multimaterial jetting technology, the increased shrinkage and lower mechanical strength in the ZX direction must be considered in the design process.

We sought to evaluate the effects of Er:YAG laser (LightTouch, LightInstruments, Israel) conditioning on enamel roughness and shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets on enamel. Eighteen human molars (n = 9) and premolars (n = 9), were divided into 3 groups depending on the enamel conditioning method; Er:YAG laser (G1, n = 6), conventional etching with 37% orthophosphoric acid (G2, n = 6), Er:YAG laser combined with conventional etching (G3, n = 6). Er:YAG laser parameters were as follows: energy: 100 mJ, frequency: 10 Hz, exposure time: 10 s, applicator diameter: 600 μm, fluence: 35.37 J/cm2, distance: 1 mm away from a tooth, cooling: 80%. An MTS 858 MiniBionix® machine was used to determine the shear bond strength (MTS System, Eden Prairie, MN, USA). The enamel structure was assessed using X-ray microtomography (SkyScan 1172, Bruker, Kontich, Belgium). The highest values of shear bond strength were obtained in the G3 group (9.23 ± 2.38 MPa) and the lowest values in the G2 group (6.44 ± 2.11 MPa) (p < 0.05). A significant change in the enamel surface was noted after applying laser, reaching up to 9% of enamel thickness, which was not observed in the etched samples. Moreover, the Er:YAG laser-irradiated enamel surface was characterized by the greatest roughness. The combined use of an Er:YAG laser with a conventional etching improves the adhesion of composite materials to the tooth.

Abstract A 42-d research study evaluated effects of feeding beef steers increasing levels of dietary Zn from Zn methionine (AAC-Zn; ZINPRO, Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN) with or without supplemental Cu from Cu amino acid complex (AAC-Cu; Availa Cu, Zinpro Corp.) concurrently with ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC; Optaflexx, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN). One hundred-twenty steers (mean BW = 624 kg), ≤ 50 d from projected harvest were randomized to three pens (40 steers/pen) equipped with GrowSafe Systems (Calgary AB, Canada) feed bunk technology. Each pen was assigned to one of three treatment diets: 1) basal finishing diet + 30 mg Zn/kg DM from AAC-Zn (CON); 2) basal finishing diet + 90 mg Zn/kg DM from AAC-Zn (AAC-Zn90); or 3) AAC-Zn90 diet + 10 mg Cu/kg DM from AAC-Cu (AAC-Zn/Cu). Following allocation to treatments, cattle were acclimated to pen cohorts and GrowSafe feed bunks for 7 days. All steers were fed 300 mg RAC∙hd-1∙d-1 starting 35 d prior to harvest. Individual feed intake measurements began with RAC feeding and continued for 35 d until cattle were shipped for harvest. Carcass data were collected from each steer. Data were analyzed with individual animal as the experimental unit using PROC MIXED and PROC GLIMMIX procedures of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Numerically AAC-Zn90 fed cattle had heavier carcass weights than CON and AAC-Zn/Cu. Steers fed AAC-Zn90 had greater (P = 0.02) marbling scores compared to AAC-Zn/Cu. Steers fed AAC-Zn90 had lower backfat thickness (P = 0.02) and numerically greater marbling scores compared to CON. A biphasic program of feeding a lower level of AAC-Zn for the duration of the finishing phase followed by an increased rate of AAC-Zn during RAC feeding may optimize overall live and carcass response and improve total individual animal value.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to identify the impacts of Zn concentrations in lamb grower pellet on lamb feedlot performance and natural coccidia infection in terms of fecal Eimeria oocyst excretion. Rambouillet lambs (n = 33; 43.9 ± 1.0 kg) were used in a 63 d feeding trial to assess the effect of a diet fortified with a combination of ZnSO4 (80%) and Zn amino acid complex (20%; ZnAA; Zinpro Corp.; Eden Prairie, MN, USA) at three different dietary Zn concentrations (treatment, TRT) which met or exceeded current recommendations. These levels included 1×NRC requirements (450 mg/kg grower pellet; 1NRC), 2×NRC requirements (900 mg/kg grower pellet; 2NRC), and 3×NRC requirements (1350 mg/kg grower pellet; 3NRC). Lamb performance characteristics, including body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), average dry matter intake (DMI), feed efficiency (gain:feed, G:F), and residual feed intake (RFI), were quantified. Fecal samples were collected every 2 wk to assess coccidia infection status via fecal oocyst counts. Treatment × period (d 0–10, 11–42, 42–63) interactions were identified for DMI (P &lt; 0.001). No main effect of TRT was identified for BW, ADG, G:F, or RFI (P &gt; 0.36), but was for DMI (P = 0.02). Ten Eimeria species were detected and summed for total fecal oocyst count, but focus was on the most pathogenic species (E. ahsata, E. bakuensis, E. crandallis, and E. ovinoidalis). A statistical tendency for the interaction between TRT × day was detected for E. bakuensis and E. ovinoidalis (P ≤ 0.08). Transformed counts of E. bakuensis and E. crandallis were lower for 1NRC compared to 2NRC and 3NRC lambs (P &lt; 0.05). Results indicate greater dietary Zn concentrations increased DMI and decreased Eimeria oocysts excreted.

Abstract A 2 x 2 factorial study was conducted to evaluate main and interaction effects of feeding amino acid complexed sources of Zn (Zn-AAC; 40 mg /kg DM from Availa® Zn; Zinpro Corp., Eden Prairie, MN) and Cr (chromium methionine; Cr-Met; 0.20 mg / kg DM from Availa® Cr; Zinpro Corp., Eden Prairie, MN) fed in combination or separately, compared to an iso-Zn level Control (CON) group that provided Zn from ZnSO4 (80 mg Zn∙kg-1DM) with no supplemental source of Cr. Treatments were replicated into 4 pens with 5 finishing Bos taurus x Bos indicus bullocks/pen (80 bullocks; BW= 421 kg). Treatment diets were initiated 28 d prior to starting zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZIL; 15 mg/kg BW) with ZIL fed daily for 33 d followed by a 4 d withdrawal before harvest. During the ZIL-feeding Zn-ACC x Cr-Met interactions were present for ADG and Gain:Feed (G:F) where Zn-ACC improved ADG (P≤ 0.05) and Cr-Met improved G:F vs. CON. Effects may have been mediated by differences in DM intake (DMI), where DMI was numerically increased by Zn-ACC and decreased (P ≤ 0.01) by Cr-Met. Overall, feeding Cr-Met moderated DMI and improved G:F (P ≤ 0.05). Measures of carcass composition were not affected by Zn-ACC or Cr-Met. Hot carcass weight was increased (P ≤ 0.05) by feeding Zn-ACC and tended to increase with Cr-Met. Daily carcass gain increased from feeding either Zn-ACC or Cr-Met during the ZIL phase and overall study. Feeding Zn-ACC was a primary driver during the ZIL period and overall trial for increasing growth rate, with little or no influence on DM intake while feeding Cr-Met moderated DM intake to improve dietary and energetic efficiency. Balancing the feeding levels of Zn-ACC and Cr-Met will be key to optimizing the overall biological response and net return.

Abstract Thirty-two pens housing between 249–282 beef cattle each were blocked by arrival date and sex and used to investigate effects of pen-surface temperature, trace mineral source and sex on hide temperature. A randomized complete block design was used with 2 treatments: 1) Control, with inorganic sources for all trace minerals of interest; and 2) Test, with ProPath (Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN) used to provide additional AA complexes of Zn and Mn, complexed Co, and ruminally-protected folic acid to basal control diet. Cattle were fed to meet requirements of JBS “Aspen Ridge” and observed twice monthly from June–September. Three observations per observation day were made at these times: 1) 0700–1000; 2) 1015–1315; 3) 1430–1700 (all times ± 30 min). Hide temperatures were observed caudal to glenohumeral joints of 10 black-hided and, when available, 10 non-black-hided animals per pen. Within each pen, surface temperatures were observed at 3 locations on the cement bunk apron and 7 locations on the dirt surface. Temperatures were observed using a Fluke VT04 visual infrared thermometer. Temperatures were greater on black-hided cattle than non-black-hided cattle (P &lt; 0.0001) and on steers than heifers (P &lt; 0.0001). Temperatures on Test cattle were greater (P = 0.0008) than temperatures on Control cattle, but this effect was small (0.251o C) and inconsistent across observation days (treatment within date interaction: P &lt; 0.0001). Pen-surface temperatures were greater in Time 2 than Time 1 (P &lt; 0.0001), but not different between Time 2 and Time 3 (P = 0.37). Hide temperatures on all cattle were correlated with pen-surface temperature (R2 = 0.43). Trace mineral source had a small but statistically significant effect on hide temperature. Correlations between hide temperature and visible signs of heat stress are unclear and warrant further observation.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the effects of increased supplemental Zn from differing sources on growth performance of steers fed diets differing in net energy. Angus steers (n = 72, 324 ± 2.1 kg) with Genemax gain scores of 3, 4, or 5 were blocked by BW and stratified by Genemax gain score into 12 pens of 6 steers each for 158 d. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 Zn treatments (ZNTRT): 1) control (no supplemental Zn, analyzed 33 mg Zn/kg DM; CON); 2) inorganic Zn (CON + 120 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM as ZnSO4 for entire trial; INZN); or 3) 120 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM as Zn-amino acid complex (Availa-Zn; Zinpro, Eden Prairie, MN) for first 60 d, then a blend of ZnSO4 and Zn-AA complex (CON + 60 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM as ZnSO4 + 60 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM as Zn-amino acid complex) for the remainder of the trial (ZNBLD). Two dietary energy strategies (ENERGY) were formulated to reach ADG rates of 1) 1.6 kg/d (LE) or 2) 2.0 kg/d (HE) utilizing a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (12 steers/treatment). All steers were fed LE for a 60 d growing period, then pens were randomly assigned to ENERGY treatments fed the remaining 91 d. Day 60 BW tended to be greater (P = 0.07) in steers receiving supplemental Zn vs. CON. Liver Cu was decreased in Zn supplemented steers vs. CON (P = 0.02). Liver Zn concentrations on d 56 did not differ for Zn vs. CON (P = 0.22) nor were there differences due to Zn source (P = 0.98). There were or tended to be ZNTRT × ENERGY effects for d 67–90 ADG and G:F (P ≤ 0.01), and d 122 BW and d 90–122 G:F (P ≤ 0.10) driven by improved performance for ZNBLD-HE over ZNBLD-LE, while ENERGY within CON and INZN did not differ. Day 90–122 ADG, overall ADG and overall G:F was greater (P ≤ 0.02) and d 67–90 G:F tended to be greater (P = 0.10) for HE vs. LE. No ZNTRT × ENERGY or ZNTRT effects were detected for HCW, REA, BF, KPH, MS, or YG (P ≥ 0.37) while HE increased HCW, BF, MS, and YG compared with LE (P ≤ 0.05). In the liver, ZNTRT affected d 97 MT1A expression (P = 0.03) where INZN was greater than ZNBLD or CON (P ≤ 0.02), while ZIP14 was unaffected due to ZNTRT, ENERGY, or the interaction (P ≥ 0.39). Supplying supplemental Zn as ZNBLD during the transition period appeared to improve performance measures, but no final performance advantages were noted due to increased supplemental Zn, regardless of source. Additionally, differences in liver MT1A expression may indicate differing post-absorptive metabolism between Zn sources.
