Abstract Background Pituitary adenoma coexists with intracranial aneurysms in 2.3 to 3.6% of cases, and intracranial aneurysms are thought to be incidental. On the other hand, older age and cavernous sinus invasion are reported to increase the rate of coexistence, so these two diseases may be related. Methods Ten males and 14 females with the coexistence of pituitary adenomas and intracranial aneurysms were retrospectively investigated among 923 patients (2.6%). Patients were subdivided into two groups: those with direct attachment of cerebral aneurysms to the pituitary adenomas and those without direct attachment. The clinical characteristics, therapeutic strategies, and possible effects of vascular remodeling factors were investigated. Results Twelve patients had functioning pituitary adenomas, and cavernous sinus invasion was identified in 7 of 24 patients. Five of these 7 patients were treated with priority for the cerebral aneurysm until 2007, whereas 14 of 17 patients without involvement of the aneurysm tip in the tumor were treated with priority for the pituitary adenoma in the later period. Among vascular remodeling factors, strong expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was significantly associated with the coexistence of pituitary adenoma and cerebral aneurysm (p < 0.05). Conclusion Intracranial aneurysms were found to coexist in 2.6% of cases of surgically treated pituitary adenomas. VEGF-induced arterial wall remodeling may be part of the mechanism of association between pituitary adenomas and cerebral aneurysms, suggesting possible causative mechanism.

Colorectal anastomosis is defined as a surgical procedure in which the colon is attached to the remainder of the rectum after most or some part of it was removed during an intervention. A straight colorectal anastomosis implies a direct attachment, while a J-pouch colorectal anastomosis implies a previous creation of a reservoir, or “pouch” out of bowel material. The problem of colorectal anastomosis safety and outcome is among the most important and persistent issues in colorectal surgery, mainly due to the anastomotic leakage, a threatening and dangerous complication, with an incidence of up to 20% or even more in case of surgical oncology. Various prediction models and anastomosis testing techniques have been described in order to prevent or identify early any possible imperfection of the anastomosis, each with pros and cons. The measures generally used to increase the safety and reliability of the colorectal anastomosis are to evaluate the blood supply of the tissues anastomosed with indocyanine green, or to test the mechanical integrity of the anastomosis for leakage by employing air, methylene blue, or tension.

Introduction: The routine technique of tarso-frontalis suspension surgery for simple congenital blepharoptosis with poor levator action is cosmetically less rewarding due to either an absence or asymmetry of the postoperative eyelid crease. The objective of this study was to assess the eyelid crease quality after a modified open method of tarso-frontalis suspension surgery compared to the closed method. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective comparative study reviewing the case sheets of all the patients undergoing unilateral tarso-frontalis suspension surgery with silicon rod employing Fox pentagon design from September 2017 to February 2019 at Mechi Eye Hospital, Jhapa, Nepal.  A review of 40 case sheets of congenital lid ptosis with poor levator function(<4mm) aged 9 years or more was done. Tarso-frontalis suspension surgery, modified with a mini blepharoplasty incision, direct attachment of silicon rod to tarsus, completion of pentagon design with supra-brow incisions, and skin-orbicularis-tarsus-orbicularis-skin suture (open method) was done in 20 cases whereas other 20 cases underwent surgery with supraciliary stab incisions (closed method). Results: The mean age of the patients was 21.1+5.9 years (range 9-30 years). The ptosis amount ranged from 3–10mm. At the 6th postoperative month, most of the cases had good ptosis correction (90% open group, 85% closed group, p=0.74). However, cosmetic outcomes were better in the open group compared to the closed group: 100% symmetrical eyelid crease compared to 40% (p<0.001) and 90% acceptance rate for eyelid contour compared to 70% (p=0.23). Conclusion: Predictable, targeted, and symmetrical lid crease can be obtained using the modified open method of tarso-frontalis suspension surgery.

Purpose: This research aims to discuss the history of Islam in New Zealand, together with some of the pressing issues and challenges Muslims have encountered along the way. Looking back at the history of early Muslim settlers and the emergence of Muslim organizations and allied enterprises, it is clear that the Muslim community in New Zealand has had a rather mixed reception in a land that, on the whole, is perceived to be benignly tolerant and accepting. Methodology: The research is based on a critical analysis of the available literature, both contemporary and historical. This paper explores complicated community developments, conversions to Islam, the violence experienced with defacement and destruction of mosques in reaction to overseas events over recent decades, ongoing Islamophobia, and the infamous 2019 terrorist attack on two mosques in the city of Christchurch. Findings: The research highlights the status of the New Zealand Muslim community and the extent and nature of their influence in the country. It constitutes a social hierarchy with a complex past and multiple internal issues. Accordingly, this paper concludes with a brief discussion of the migrant experience of Muslims. It also elucidates the necessity of further research in the future and emphasizes the need to study the culture, faith and history of New Zealand from various angles. Originality: This is illustrated in the direct attachment of the research to the core topic of religion. This is the first academic study to deal directly with both the history of the Muslim minority and contemporary issues such as Islamophobia following the 2019 massacre.

AbstractLanthanide doped nanocrystals capable to emit higher energy photons under excitation with lower energy radiation are promising for a broad range of applications including biodetection, biosensing, and bioimaging. However, the adaptation of these nanoparticles to the biological environment that requires good water-solubility, stability and ease of further functionalization still remains a challenge. The application of nanoparticles for biodetection or in various assays encountered many difficulties arising mainly from the strong tendency of nanoparticles for aggregation or nonspecific binding. Here we present a new method to obtain soluble and stable in water-based buffers NaYF4:Yb3+Er3+ nanocrystals with modified surface ready for further conjugation with biomolecules. In the presented approach polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl alcohol copolymer (PVP/VA) with photo-activatable linker (N-5-Azido-2-nitrobenzoyl group—ANB-NOS) was used for initial coating due to its high non-covalent affinity to nanoparticles surface. Subsequent coating with aminated dextran by ultraviolet light activation of ANB-NOS was carried out. This step has a significant impact on nanocrystals stability in the physiological buffer as well as on protein conjugation. Conjugation of biomolecules was possible by employing another photo-linker—sulfosuccinimidyl 4,4′-azipentanoate (sulfo-SDA). Bacterial Protein G has been selected to create a universal immune-imaging agent due to its ability to bind Fc fragment of most mammalian immunoglobulins. Moreover, the direct attachment of antibodies to nanoparticles was also examined. The activity of biofunctionalized nanocrystals was tested in immunoblot test, that confirmed preserved activity of attached molecules and lack of undesired nonspecific binding or precipitation on the assay membrane. A family of four push–pull porphyrazines of A3B type, where each unit A contains two peripheral propyl chains and the unit B is endowed with a carboxylic acid, were prepared. The carboxylic acid was attached to the b-position of the pyrrolic unit, either directly (Pz 10), or through cyanovinyl (Pz 11) and phenyl (Pz 7) groups. The fourth Pz (14) consisted in a pyrazinoporphyrazine wherein the dinitrogenated heterocycle provided intrinsic donor–acceptor character to the macrocycle and contained a carboxyphenyl substituent. The direct attachment of the carboxylic acid functions and their linkers to the porphyrazine core produces stronger perturbation on the electronic properties of the macrocycle, with respect to their connection through fused benzene or pyrazine rings in TT112 and 14, respectively. The HOMO and LUMO energies of the Pzs, which were estimated with DFT calculations, show little variation within the series, except upon introduction of the cyanovinyl spacer, which produces a decrease in both frontier orbital energetic levels. This effective interaction of cyanovinyl substitution with the macrocycle is also evidenced in UV/Vis spectroscopy, where a large splitting of the Q-band indicates strong desymmetrization of the Pz. The performance of the four Pzs as photosensitizers in DSSCs were also investigated.

Magnetic nanoparticles can be used to load bio–molecules for various biophysical applications. The direct attachment of bio–molecules such as protein and DNA to magnetic nanoparticles may lead to alter their structure. A method to immobilize and store biomolecules for example DNA on to a magnetic nanoparticles surface without much structural alteration is carried out in the present work. DNA is a target for many therapeutic small molecules as therapeutic drugs bind to DNA – interfering with protein factors involved in DNA mechanism, or cleave DNA cross-link – interfering with the cell division. This may find applications in drug interactions study with the stored DNA without much alteration in their structure.

Entrepreneurship training helps to support culture and entrepreneurship by changing mindsets and increasing expertise. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMES) training program has a challenge to pay more attention to the personal characteristics of entrepreneur to make it effective. Personal characteristics affect the training process, which is generate training success by obtaining satisfaction of the participants. The study examines personal characteristics; learning motivation, personal targets, and extraversion personality, as aspects that influence relationship between training and entrepreneurship orientation. The study was conducted on entrepreneur that took part in entrepreneurship training program using questionnaires. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed with the SEM PLS model and generate results of the study, thus personal characteristics as moderation have no significant influence or relationship to the strength of the relationship between training and entrepreneurial orientation. Even though same as training, personal characteristics have a direct attachment to entrepreneurial orientation. The results of this study can be a reference for the implementation of the training to stimulates the trainees' personal characteristics to support entrepreneurial orientation.
