Abstract As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, assisted living group activities and congregate dining stopped and residents were confined to their rooms. While this may have kept residents safer from contracting the virus, it also reduced their physical activity levels. The aim of this study was to investigate if rates of falls in one assisted living community varied as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. We analyzed fall incident reports from n=155 residents from October 2019 to October 2020. Results showed a total of n=802 falls in the year-long period (range of 1-30 falls per resident; mean = 5.17; SD=5.6 in the 12 month period). The majority (65%) of falls occurred in resident rooms. 55% of falls occurred between 6am and 6pm. The primary cause of these falls was loss of balance (30%). Comparing falls that occurred 5 months pre-restriction (Oct 2019-Feb 2020) with 5 months post-restriction (April 2020-August 2021) showed non-significant differences between time periods (p=.59). However, analyzing rates of falls by month showed a range of 46 - 88 falls by month with the lowest number occurring in winter months and the peak number of falls occurring in both Oct 2019 and 2020. Despite the majority of falls occurring in resident rooms, Covid restrictions of room confinement did not appear to impact the prevalence of falls in this sample. However, the seasonal variation warrants further research and those in assisted living should consider seasonal variations and proactively implement policies to prevent falls during these times.

In hunter-gatherer societies, social friction can be alleviated by families moving between bands. However, the transition to a settled village lifestyle (usually associated with the adoption of agriculture) removes this possibility. Living in large communities necessitates the development of behavioral mechanisms for defusing these stresses. I use data on the proportion of deaths that are due to violence in contemporary small-scale societies to show that these stresses increase linearly with living-group size in hunter-gatherers, but not in horticulturalists living in permanent settlements, where instead there appear to be a series of ‘glass ceilings’ below which homicide rates oscillate. These glass ceilings correlate with the adoption of behavioral mechanisms that allow social friction to be managed. These results suggest that the transition to a settled lifestyle may be more challenging than previously assumed and that the increases in settlement size that followed the first villages necessitated what amounts to a series of structural rearrangements so as to manage inter-individual discord.

Objectives, purpose, or aim: This study aims to gain insights into the implementation of theoretical knowledge on dementia-friendly design into practice to (1) identify key design criteria stimulating spatial orientation and wayfinding for seniors with dementia and (2) determine the optimal design for this purpose. Background: Spatial orientation problems of seniors with dementia can be counteracted by the design of the physical environment of inpatient care facilities. Research has been conducted about design features supporting wayfinding skills for this target group, however, not on their implementation. Methods: Fourteen floor plans of the living group of built projects have been evaluated on 14 design criteria supporting wayfinding skills for the target group and measurable in floor plans by the performance of a comparative floorplan analysis and multicriteria assessment. Results: Although one third of the evaluated design criteria are properly implemented, all floor plans of the selected projects had some gaps in fulfilling all design criteria. Five typological floor plans—based on the circulation systems of the cases—were distinguished: one straight corridor structured by two walls, one corridor with corners, two corridors separated from each other by the living room, a continuous loop corridor, and a corridor framed by a wall and interior elements (e.g., cabinets). The majority of the cases was based on a linear system with one straight corridor. Conclusions: Based on this study, three of the five discovered typological floor plans work well for stimulating wayfinding. Furthermore, special attention need to be given to the configuration of the floor plans, shape, and daylight in the corridor.

Gaze stabilization compensates for movements of the head or external environment to minimize image blurring, which is critical for visually-guided behaviors. Multisensory information is used to stabilize the visual scene on the retina via the vestibulo-ocular (VOR) and optokinetic (OKR) reflexes. While the organization of neuronal circuits underlying VOR is well described across vertebrates, less is known about the contribution and evolutionary origin of the OKR circuits. Moreover, the integration of these two sensory modalities is still poorly understood. Here, we developed a novel experimental model, the isolated lamprey eye-brain-labyrinth preparation, to analyze the neuronal pathways underlying visuo-vestibular integration which allowed electrophysiological recordings while applying vestibular stimulation using a moving platform, coordinated with visual stimulation via two screens. We show that lampreys exhibit robust visuo-vestibular integration, with optokinetic information processed in the pretectum and integrated with vestibular inputs at several subcortical levels. The enhanced eye movement response to multimodal stimulation favored the vestibular response at increased velocities. The optokinetic signals can be downregulated from tectum. Additionally, saccades are present in the form of nystagmus. The lamprey represents the oldest living group of vertebrates, thus all basic components of the visuo-vestibular control of gaze were present already at the dawn of vertebrate evolution.

The genus Pogonophryne is a speciose group that includes 28 species inhabiting the coastal or deep waters of the Antarctic Southern Ocean. The genus has been divided into five species groups, among which the P. albipinna group is the most deep-living group and is characterized by a lack of spots on the top of the head. Here, we carried out genome survey sequencing of P. albipinna using the Illumina HiSeq platform to estimate the genomic characteristics and identify genome-wide microsatellite motifs. The genome size was predicted to be ~883.8 Mb by K-mer analysis (K=25), and the heterozygosity and repeat ratio were 0.289% and 39.03%, respectively. The genome sequences were assembled into 571,624 contigs, covering a total length of ~819.3 Mb with an N50 of 2,867 bp. A total of 2,217,422 simple sequence repeat motifs were identified from the assembly data, and the number of repeats decreased as the length and number of repeats increased. These data will provide a useful foundation for the development of new molecular markers for the P. albipinna group as well as for further whole genome sequencing of P. albipinna.

The forebrain plays a critical role in a broad range of neural processes encompassing sensory integration and initiation/selection of behaviour. The forebrain functions through an interaction between different cortical areas, the thalamus, the basal ganglia with the dopamine system, and the habenulae. The ambition here is to compare the mammalian forebrain with that of the lamprey representing the oldest now living group of vertebrates, by a review of earlier studies. We show that the lamprey dorsal pallium has a motor, a somatosensory, and a visual area with retinotopic representation. The lamprey pallium was previously thought to be largely olfactory. There is also a detailed similarity between the lamprey and mammals with regard to other forebrain structures like the basal ganglia in which the general organisation, connectivity, transmitters and their receptors, neuropeptides, and expression of ion channels are virtually identical. These initially unexpected results allow for the possibility that many aspects of the basic design of the vertebrate forebrain had evolved before the lamprey diverged from the evolutionary line leading to mammals. Based on a detailed comparison between the mammalian forebrain and that of the lamprey and with due consideration of data from other vertebrate groups, we propose a compelling account of a pan-vertebrate schema for basic forebrain structures, suggesting a common ancestry of over half a billion years of vertebrate evolution.

AbstractShortly after the formal launch of the ICU project in the summer of 2017, representatives from the group works council of the GASAG group sat down with the trade union network Forum for the Social Forms of Technology, the FST, to start up an independent practical initiative to examine the topic of internal crowdsourcing to be implemented soon after. In 2018, a model works council agreement between the group works council and the management was agreed, henceforth framing the IC procedure in the GASAG group. The agreement is meant to serve as a template for the introduction of internal crowdsourcing in other companies and industries. A special feature of the agreement is the so-called ‘living’ group works council agreement.
