In studying ion implanted semiconductors and fast neutron irradiated metals, the need for characterizing small dislocation loops having diameters of a few hundred angstrom units usually arises. The weak beam imaging method is a powerful technique for analyzing these loops. Because of the large reduction in stacking fault (SF) fringe spacing at large sg, this method allows for a rapid determination of whether the loop is faulted, and, hence, whether it is a perfect or a Frank partial loop. This method was first used by Bicknell to image small faulted loops in boron implanted silicon. He explained the fringe spacing by kinematical theory, i.e., ≃l/(Sg) in the fault fringe in depth oscillation. The fault image contrast formation mechanism is, however, really more complicated.

The dental profession has experienced a dramatic acceleration in the use of communication systems and information-based technologies over recent years, originating new paradigms for the prevention and promotion of oral health. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effect of teledentistry-based (telematic) strategies, reported in randomized controlled trials and quasi-randomized trials, with a focus on oral health prevention and promotion–related outcomes in patients of all ages. We searched Medline via PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science from inception until August 2020, regardless of the language of publication. We selected studies for inclusion and conducted data extraction, assessed risk of bias (Cochrane tool), and evaluated the certainty of the evidence (GRADE approach) in duplicate and independently. Out of 898 potentially eligible references, we selected 43 for full-text screening, of which 19 studies proved eligible: 18 randomized controlled trials and 1 quasi-randomized study. Virtual interventions were mostly asynchronous via apps ( n = 9), text messages ( n = 9), or computer-aided learning ( n = 1). The use of teledentistry as compared with conventional strategies may result in a large reduction in the plaque index (standardized mean difference, −1.18; 95% CI, −1.54 to −0.82; I2 = 92%; low certainty) and will likely result in a large reduction in the gingival index (standardized mean difference, −2.17; 95% CI, −3.15 to −1.19; I2 = 97%; moderate certainty) and in the incidence of white spot lesions (risk ratio, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.35 to 0.66; I2 = 0%; moderate certainty), with an increased effect over time. Evidence suggests that teledentistry, particularly mHealth (messages and apps), is a promising clinical tool for preventing and promoting oral health, especially under the accelerated virtualization of dentistry. Future studies should include a broader spectrum of the population, including adults and elders, to better inform policy and implementation of teledentistry (PROSPERO: CRD42020192685).

Many observational studies investigated the association between PA and health at a single time-point, but PA might change over time. Purpose. To examine the association between change in PA and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality, and to investigate the impact of cardiovascular health status at baseline on these outcomes. Methods. This study used data from the Lifelines Cohort Study (N = 88,320). Self-reported PA volumes were presented as Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) min/week. Change in PA was calculated by subtracting MET-min/week at the first assessment from the second assessment (median interval: 4 yrs), and 5 groups were created; large reduction (< -1500), moderate reduction (-1500 to -250), no change (-250 to 250), moderate improvement (-250 to 250) and large improvement (>1500). The outcome was a combination of MACE and all-cause mortality. Results. During a median follow-up of 7 years, 667 events occurred among healthy individuals (43 ± 12 yrs, 1% of 69,818) and 599 in individuals with CVRF (55 ± 11 yrs, 3% of 18,502). Adjusted for confounders and baseline PA, healthy individuals with a large reduction in PA had a greater risk of incident MACE and mortality (Table). In CVRF, moderate to large improvements in PA were associated with reductions in adverse outcomes. Risk estimates became stronger in individuals with lower baseline PA (<2000 MET-min/week), Table). Conclusions. Maintaining PA in healthy individuals and increasing PA in individuals with CVRF over time is important to prevent MACE and mortality. Following weaning at 6–7 mo of age, 36 beef steers were used to determine production responses when grass silage was supplemented with barley or fishmeal. The silage was made from direct-cut, formic- acid-treated grass harvested from a mixed sward and had a high nitrogen content but poor fermentation characteristics. The silage was fed ad libitum for 98 days either alone or supplemented with 500 g fishmeal or 500 g barley per day. Both fishmeal and barley increased total dry matter intake (P < 0.01) by an amount equivalent to the quantity of supplement offered but had no effect on silage intake (P > 0.05). Steers fed the fishmeal grew substantially faster than either the barley (0.53 kg/day) or unsupplemented (0.54 kg/day) groups (P < 0.01). Fishmeal supplementation resulted in a large reduction (35%) in the amount of feed required per kilogram of gain. Key words: Cattle, grass silage, fishmeal, growth



The absorption spectra of eight type I and three type II a diamonds irradiated with neutrons, electrons or y-rays have been recorded at 80 and 290°K after various heat treatments in the temperature range 0 to 900°C. It is found that heating in the range 350 to 450°C causes a general reduction in the irradiation-induced absorption owing to the recombination of those interstitials and vacancies which are near neighbours. Heating type II a diamonds at 600°C causes a large reduction in the irradiation-induced lines and new lines appear. These are probably due to pairs of identical defects, and the kinetics of their formation during isothermal heating at 600°C are presented. At higher temperatures all absorption lines in type II a diamonds disappear and only continuous absorption remains. This is probably due to amorphous or graphitic regions produced by agglomeration of defects. Type I diamonds show the same kind of absorption, but in addition show an increase in strength of the natural lines and also some new absorption lines which are not removed by heating at 900°C. It is suggested that these additional processes are due to the anchoring of vacant atomic sites and interstitial carbon atoms at crystal imperfections present only in type I diamonds.

A number of female sterile mutations on the first and third chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster have been screened for defects in the yolk proteins using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Two new mutants were identified. 6m45 accumulates all three yolk proteins (YP1, YP2 and YP3) in the haemolymph but they are all absent from the ovaries suggesting it is a yolk-protein-uptake mutant. In contrast, 1163 is a temperature-sensitive mutation with a large reduction in the quantity of YP1 in the haemolymph and ovaries at 29 °C. Both mutants are autonomous in ovary transplant experiments.

The influence of steady-state changes in chemical stimuli on ventilation and electromyographic activity of the diaphragm during both inspiration (total DI) and expiration (total DE) was studied in unanesthetized intact adult cats before and after carotid denervation. In intact animals, during hypercapnia (2 4, and 6% CO2), tidal volume (VT) and total DI increase, whereas total DE did not consistently change. During ambient hypocapnic hypoxia (14, 12, and 10% O2), VT increased only at 10% O2, whereas total DI increased at all levels studied. Total DE increased substantially at 14% O2, persisting up to the end of expiration with 12 and 10% O2. This effect was markedly attenuated during normocapnic hypoxia. During CO hypoxemia (1,700 ppm in air), VT as well as total DI and total DE decreased because of a large reduction in inspiratory and expiratory time elicited by tachypneic breathing. The effects of hypercapnia and hypoxia persisted after carotid denervation. Therefore, 1) in contrast to hypercapnia, hypoxia markedly enhances the expiratory diaphragmatic activity, 1) this expiratory braking mechanism depends on the severity of hypoxia and is partly due to hypocapnia secondary to hypoxia; and 3) because this effect was observed after carotid denervation and during CO hypoxemia, it may arise in the central nervous system, possibly in bulbopontine structures.

This study attempts to distinguish between a direct action of ovarian steroids on adrenergic neurons in the oviduct and an indirect effect mediated by changes in muscle size. Mature rabbits were treated as follows: group 1, ovariectomized and a polyethylene catheter (1 mm OD) inserted into isthmus of one oviduct (CT) with contralateral oviduct as control (C); group 2, normal, estrous animals with one intubated isthmus (ET) and contralateral control (E). Fourteen days postoperatively, oviducts were removed and muscle-wall thickness, norepinephrine (NE) content, and response to nerve stimulation were measured. Although castration atrophy was prevented in CT, NE content of CT was significantly less than C, 0.032 +/- 0.07 versus 1.09 +/- 0.10 nmol. NE content of ET was also significantly less than E (1.32 +/- 0.03 versus 1.81 +/- 2.0) despite a greater wall thickness of ET. It was concluded that: a) withdrawal of ovarian hormones reduces NE contents by a direct action on nerves; b) moderate stretch, per se, increases muscle size and reduces NE content; c) nerve stimulation induces muscle contraction despite large reduction in transmitter content.
