The underwater structure of power house is major structure under the dynamic loads of unit. The vibration problem is very common in operation. So the structures should have sufficient stiffness to resist dynamic loads of unit. This paper establishes three-dimensional finite element models with finite element analysis software—ANSYS. Dynamic characteristics of the power house and dynamic responses of structure under earthquake are analyzed. The results of the computation show that fluid-solid coupling may be ignored when studying dynamic characteristics of structures of the underground power house.

A unique atomic structure of carbon nanotube unveils outstanding properties. This makes it potentially highly valued reinforcing material to strengthen composite materials. The methodology is established in this research paper to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of the nanocomposites. Repol polypropylene H110MA is used as a matrix material along with the different percentages of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). A concept of representative volume element (RVE) is considered to study the various properties of the nanocomposite material. The carbon–carbon bond of nanotube is modeled using Tersoff–Brenner potential and represented by space frame element. The matrix material properties are tested in the laboratory which are further used to model it and represented by three-dimensional continuum elements. The interaction between nanotube and polymer matrix is modeled using “Lennard–Jones 6-12” potential represented by nonlinear spring elements. The effect of reinforcement, chirality, % volume of SWCNT, atomic vacancy defect and Stone–Wales defect on the properties of nanocomposite are investigated. To see the effect of reinforcement, the eigenvalues of the RVE are extracted for different boundary conditions. The viscoplastic behavior of the matrix material is considered and the rate-dependent characteristics of the nanocomposite are studied. The damping property of the nanocomposite material is also investigated based on the phase lag between stress and strain field by applying harmonic strain at different frequencies.

The column of heavy double turret five-axis horizontal milling complex machining center is taken as the object of study. Solidworks is used to establish three-dimensional model of milling machining center column, the established modal is be imported into ANSYS Workbench for static and dynamic characteristics analysis. First, by comparing the column deformation, the stress and strain under no-load and load conditions, which is concluded that column design is too conservative and be optimized. Secondly, the modal analysis was carried out on the column, which provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of the column by getting the first six natural frequencies and mode shapes of cloud.

CloudSat (CS) heralded a new era of profiling the planet’s cloud systems and storms with its launch in 2006. This satellite flies the first 94-GHz spaceborne Cloud Profiling Radar, and the data collected have provided a unique perspective on Earth’s cloudiness and processes that affect clouds. CS flies in formation with the afternoon satellite constellation, a collection of active and passive satellite sensors offering near-simultaneous observations of the same cloud phenomena. While passes of the nadir-pointing Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) antenna occur infrequently over tropical cyclones, they happen enough to provide a detailed compilation of the inner structure of clouds and precipitation of these complex storm systems. Nearly 8,000 vertical profiles of TCs have been collected during the period June 2006–December 2013 and observations continue as CS flies in daylight-only mode. These observations have been assembled into a one-of-a-kind dataset of three-dimensional features revealing precipitation areas, moats, and multilayered clouds. Each unique overpass profiled by CS has been compiled with corresponding A-Train sensors, model data, and storm-specific best-track information. The multisensor components of the CS and A-Train TC dataset together with these other data are summarized and cataloged as a function of radial distance from storm center. Example imagery is provided along with stratified reflectivity profiles detailing changes in storm structures across varying environmental shear conditions. The data reported on in this paper offer an unprecedented view of these major storm types and their inner structure.

AbstractA low cost, light weight, high performance composite material turbomachinery impeller with a uniquely designed blade patterns is analyzed. Such impellers can economically enable refrigeration plants to use water as a refrigerant (R718). A strength and dynamic characteristics analyses procedure is developed to assess the maximum stresses and natural frequencies of these wound composite axial impellers under operating loading conditions. Numerical simulation using FEM for two-dimensional and three-dimensional impellers was investigated. A commercially available software ANSYS is used for the finite element calculations. Analysis is done for different blade geometries and then suggestions are made for optimum design parameters. In order to avoid operating at resonance, which can make impellers suffer a significant reduction in the design life, the designer must calculate the natural frequency and modal shape of the impeller to analyze the dynamic characteristics. The results show that using composite Kevlar fiber/epoxy matrix enables the impeller to run at high tip speed and withstand the stresses, no critical speed will be matched during start-up and shut-down, and that mass imbalances of the impeller shall not pose a critical problem.

The dynamic model and three-dimensional finite element analytical model of cracked gear structure are established respectively according to the cracked beam theory, and the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, vibration shape) of cracked gear body are investigated. Further the influences of crack position and crack length on the dynamic characteristics of gear structure are simulated and discussed. On this basis, the fracture and damage of gear structure are investigated according to the theory of fracture mechanics. Using FRANC3D software, the three-dimensional (3D) propagation of crack at tooth root for involute gear is simulated, and stress intensity factor (SIF)s of semi-circular crack at tooth root including three types are analyzed, their variation laws are gained, then the expressions of SIFs are obtained by numerical fitting FEM results. Based on this, the 3D crack propagation path at tooth root is simulated and discussed, then, it is verified by comparing to experimental results, according to the mutation of the maximum SIF at crack tip, the fracture and damage of gear tooth are judged, and its work life also is predicted. These have very important value for damage monitoring and diagnosis of gear.

The dynamic characteristics are not only the important indexes for evaluating the bridge structural rigidity, but also the principal parameters for structural dynamic analysis and earthquake resistant analysis. In this paper, a three dimensional solid finite element model for a butterfly-shape arch bridge in Zhongshan city was established to analyze the dynamic characteristics. By comparison the numerical calculation results with measured results of the dynamic loading test, an analysis and evaluation of the dynamic performance of this new type spatial arch bridge was made, and can serve as reference to the dynamic analysis and seismic design of similar bridges.
