Purpose The present work aims to analyze the performance of a newly designed graphene-based patch antenna by varying the chemical potential in graphene sheet, using the CST Microwave Studio ® software. This study mainly seeks to discuss and assess the advantage of using graphene, instead of copper, as the radiating patch. It should be noted that graphene is a new material that possesses unique properties. Its parameters are optimized for the purpose of introducing it in satellite technology. Design/methodology/approach The use of graphene as a radiating patch of space technology applications, where a polygonal graphene patch antenna element is designed by the CST Microwave Studio ® software with Taconic RF-41 substrate to resonate in the satellite bands. Findings Analysis of a graphene patch sheet by a variation in the chemical potential to ensure operation in a space environment. Originality/value The increase in the chemical potential for a graphene patch antenna has shown a prominent increase in the values of the gain. A new contribution, by the combination of the antenna performance improvement techniques and the use of graphene as a radiating patch of space technology applications.

Electromechanical actuators that generate large displacements, have large load capabilities, and demonstrate strong resonance characteristics are in great demand in the areas of precision positioning, active vibration control, and energy harvesting. Piezoelectric materials have been widely investigated for these applications because of their high energy density, quick response time, and relatively low driving voltages, but they demonstrate very small strain, typically about 0.1%. We present experimental and finite element results for two designs that use active and passive frames, respectively, to enhance the small strain in piezoelectric multilayer stacks. The first design, stacked-HYBATS, employs the synergetic contribution of d33 and d31 mode piezoelectric material. Finite element results show that this structure can generate over 50 microns of displacement and nearly 40 N of blocking force in a 36 mm × 22 mm × 10 mm footprint. The second design employs frames made from passive materials to form two stages of strain amplification in a 42 mm × 30 mm × 20 mm footprint. This two-stage design can produce over 600 microns of displacement and has a blocking force of 27 N. The active and passive materials of both designs can be varied to maximize displacement and/or blocking force. The stacked-HYBATS and the two-stage amplification system display favorable force-displacement capabilities and are promising for a variety of manufacturing and space technology applications.

This paper focuses on examining the ICT diffusion by studying an initiative of the Malaysian government to bridge the digital divide that exists across the country's urban and rural communities. This is achieved through investigating the operation and the experience of a typical Rural Internet Centre. The findings of this study showed that there is keen interest among the community to learn and sharpen their ICT-related skills. The Internet Centre serves to provide an avenue for the realisation of this goal. The study showed that despite some operational snags, the Internet Centre performed well. One of the by-products of the centre was that its activities fostered closer relationships among users; it provided an avenue for disparate community members to interact and share their new skills. Bringing the ICT usage and appreciation to the rural areas was successful. About half of the centre users made weekly visits during which they searched for information on the internet, sent and received e-mail and attended the Internet Centre's regular IT classes. They also saw it as a valuable communication channel and a potential leveller of the technological capability gap.

Over the past few decades, the incipient growth of technology applications sustained by electronics has contributed to the adaption of learning programs in many engineering degrees at university, fostering the presence of electronics subjects. This highlights the paramount importance of improving the teaching of electronics, especially in the first years of Bachelor’s degrees in engineering. However, despite the fact that the teaching programs have been periodically renewed with more practical sessions, the students’ outcomes are still noticeably low. So far, results only confirm improvements in the students’ performance in the resolution of electronic circuits. Nonetheless, this is generally subject to the application of repetitive circuit resolution models, to the detriment of the real and active understanding of electronic principles. In this context, this study assesses the actual efficacy of different ICT (Information, Communication and Technology) resources, introduced into an electronics course, taught in an engineering Bachelor’s degree, within the Spanish official university system. These resources have been sequentially introduced during five consecutive years. We have conducted a statistical analysis to infer whether all the resources are equally relevant for the achievement of the students or not. In addition, we have designed a survey to measure the perceived improvement in the understanding of concepts, acquired competences, and reported satisfaction and attitude towards the use of specific resources during the program. Amongst others, LMS (Learning Management System) support, online PBL (Problem-Based Learning) activities, and CSA (Circuit Simulation Applets) have been considered. Overall, the designed learning program has been intended to provide students with long-term references to enrich their resources’ background regarding electronics.

In the globalized environment, the economic growth significantly depends on the countries capacity to develop, to apply new technologies and vice versa. Diffusion of information communication technologies is a global phenomenon. Despite of rapid globalization there are considerable differences between nations in terms of adoption and usage of new technologies. This paper aims to draw together the highly eclectic literature on the diffusion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Innovation in order to know what have been done, highlight the generic issues, relevant to policy and will initiate further research and develop potential opportunities. This paper also highlight the low level and high level income countries data and ICT policies frame work to draw conclusions and some case studies as an example. The objective is to review the finding the social economic factor for diffusion of ICT Innovation to make policy recommendation for the development of the country.

The paper presents a case study that investigated the role of modern technology applications in rainfall flooding disasters prevention. The results reported demonstrated that modern technology facilities can be used to derive preventive measures for rainfall flooding disasters. Free of charge application programs and space technology data can be downloaded and used to achieve this purpose. The derived parameters of the hydrological and topographical models can be integrated with the drainage network of the area to ensure the draining of the water and prevent it from backing up and accumulating in the low land areas. An appreciated relief effort had been made by the local governments and non-government organizations related to rainfall flooding disasters across the world. However, it is high time to devote some of this effort to the application of modern technology facilities to tackle these rainfall disasters existing causes and provide future preventive measures.
