An irreversible combined Carnot cycle model using ideal quantum gases as a working medium was studied by using finite-time thermodynamics. The combined cycle consisted of two Carnot sub-cycles in a cascade mode. Considering thermal resistance, internal irreversibility, and heat leakage losses, the power output and thermal efficiency of the irreversible combined Carnot cycle were derived by utilizing the quantum gas state equation. The temperature effect of the working medium on power output and thermal efficiency is analyzed by numerical method, the optimal relationship between power output and thermal efficiency is solved by the Euler-Lagrange equation, and the effects of different working mediums on the optimal power and thermal efficiency performance are also focused. The results show that there is a set of working medium temperatures that makes the power output of the combined cycle be maximum. When there is no heat leakage loss in the combined cycle, all the characteristic curves of optimal power versus thermal efficiency are parabolic-like ones, and the internal irreversibility makes both power output and efficiency decrease. When there is heat leakage loss in the combined cycle, all the characteristic curves of optimal power versus thermal efficiency are loop-shaped ones, and the heat leakage loss only affects the thermal efficiency of the combined Carnot cycle. Comparing the power output of combined heat engines with four types of working mediums, the two-stage combined Carnot cycle using ideal Fermi-Bose gas as working medium obtains the highest power output.

One of the most advanced and most effective technology for electricity generation nowadays based on a gas turbine combined cycle. This technology uses natural gas, synthesis gas from the coal gasification or crude oil processing products as the energy carriers but at the same time, gas turbine combined cycle emits SO2, NOx, and CO2 to the environment. In this paper, a thermodynamic analysis of environmentally friendly, high temperature gas nuclear reactor system coupled with gas turbine combined cycle technology has been investigated. The analysed system is one of the most advanced concepts and allows us to produce electricity with the higher thermal efficiency than could be offered by any currently existing nuclear power plant technology. The results show that it is possible to achieve thermal efficiency higher than 50% what is not only more than could be produced by any modern nuclear plant but it is also more than could be offered by traditional (coal or lignite) power plant.

Due to various reasons, the concepts of thermodynamics are not easy to grasp for undergraduate students. One of the major reasons is that the students are mostly unfamiliar with the thermodynamics devices discussed in the courses. Offering courses with experiments is an effective approach to solve this issue. However, it is not practical or possible for universities to own devices that operate at high temperatures and with high pressure fluids. With the cooperation of a nearby electric company, undergraduate students of a thermodynamics course from the Department of Mechanical Engineering measured thermal performances of a commercial combined cycle and its sub-systems at the President University. After learning about the theory of thermal cycles, the students analyzed the thermal performances of actual thermodynamics cycles. Subsequently, they analyzed the thermal efficiency improvements when reheating or regeneration is applied to the simple Rankine cycle in the combined cycle. At the end of the course, the students gave presentations before the electric company’s management and engineering personnel, akin to professional engineers. This course is structured to familiarize undergraduate students with thermodynamics cycles and devices.

Compression ratios of the engine considerably affect the performance and emission behavior of an engine.The paper discusses about effect of compression ratios on the operating parameters such as brake specific fuelconsumption (BSFC), brake specific energy consumption (BSEC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and volumetricefficiency on a stationary diesel-CNG dual fuel engine by adding hydrogen fraction as a combustion booster. Theexhaust emission behavior of the engine is also presented. Addition of hydrogen in CNG has given better resultsthan diesel-CNG dual fuel operation of the engine. The volumetric efficiency and emissions like NOx are theparameters which needed attention towards this study. The paper presents experimental results and analyzes them.

In order to estimate the possibility to improve thermal efficiency of power generation use gas turbine combined cycle power generation system, benefits of employing the advanced gas turbine technologies proposed here have been made clear based on the recently developed 1500C-class steam cooling gas turbine and 1300C-class reheat cycle gas turbine combined cycle power generation systems. In addition, methane reforming cooling method and NO reducing catalytic reheater are proposed. Based on these findings, the Maximized efficiency Optimized Reheat cycle Innovative Gas Turbine Combined cycle (MORITC) Power Generation System with the most effective combination of advanced technologies and the new devices have been proposed. In case of the proposed reheat cycle gas turbine with pressure ratio being 55, the high pressure turbine inlet temperature being 1700C, the low pressure turbine inlet temperature being 800C, combined with the ultra super critical pressure, double reheat type heat recovery Rankine cycle, the thermal efficiency of combined cycle are expected approximately 66.7% (LHV, generator end).

Air cooling blades are usually applied to gas turbines as a basic specification. This blade cooling air is almost 20% of compressor suction air and it means that a great deal of compression load is not converted effectively to turbine power generation. This paper proposes the CCM (Cascade Cooling Module) system of turbine blade air line and the consequent improvement of power generation, which is achieved by the reduction of cooling air consumption with effective use of recovered heat. With this technology, current gas turbines (TIT: turbine inlet temperature: 1350°C) can be up-rated to have a relative high efficiency increase. The increase ratio has a potential to be equivalent to that of 1500°C Class GT/CC against 1350°C Class. The CCM system is designed to enable the reduction of blade cooling air consumption by the low air temperature of 15°C instead of the usual 200–400°C. It causes the turbine operating air to increase at the constant suction air condition, which results in the enhancement of power and thermal efficiency. The CCM is installed in the cooling air line and is composed of three stage coolers: steam generator/fuel preheater stage, heat exchanger stage for hot water supplying and cooler stage with chilled water. The coolant (chilled water) for downstream cooler is produced by an absorption refrigerator operated by the hot water of the upstream heat exchanger. The proposed CCM system requires the modification of cooling air flow network in the gas turbine but produces the direct effect on performance enhancement. When the CCM system is applied to a 700MW Class CC (Combined Cycle) plant (GT TIT: 135°C Class), it is expected that there will be a 40–80MW increase in power and +2–5% relative increase in thermal efficiency.

An integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) with a low temperature waste heat recovery system is proposed in this paper. The combined system consists of a conventional natural gas combined cycle, organic Rankine cycle and solar fields. The performance of an organic Rankine cycle subsystem as well as the overall proposed ISCC system are analyzed using organic working fluids. Besides, parameters including the pump discharge pressure, exhaust gas temperature, thermal and exergy efficiencies, unit cost of exergy for product and annual CO2-savings were considered. Results indicate that Rc318 contributes the highest exhaust gas temperature of 71.2℃, while R113 showed the lowest exhaust gas temperature of 65.89 at 800 W/m2, in the proposed ISCC system. The overall plant thermal efficiency increases rapidly with solar radiation, while the exergy efficiency appears to have a downward trend. R227ea had both the largest thermal efficiency of 58.33% and exergy efficiency of 48.09% at 800W/m2. In addition, for the organic Rankine cycle, the exergy destructions of the evaporator, turbine and condenser decreased with increasing solar radiation. The evaporator contributed the largest exergy destruction followed by the turbine, condenser and pump. Besides, according to the economic analysis, R227ea had the lowest production cost of 19.3 $/GJ.

Supercritical water-cooled nuclear reactors (SCWRs) are a Generation IV reactor concept. SCWRs will use a light-water coolant at operating parameters set above the critical point of water (22.1 MPa and 374°C). One reason for moving from current Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) designs to SCW NPP designs is to increase the thermal efficiency. The thermal efficiency of existing NPPs is between 30% and 35% compared with 45% and 50% of supercritical water (SCW) NPPs. Another benefit of SCWRs is the use of a simplified flow circuit, in which steam generators, steam dryers, steam separators, etc. can be eliminated. Canada is in the process of conceptualizing a pressure tube (PT) type SCWR. This concept refers to a 1200-MWel PT-type reactor. Coolant operating parameters are as follows: a pressure of 25 MPa, a channel inlet temperature of 350°C, and an outlet temperature of 625°C. The sheath material and nuclear fuel must be able to withstand these extreme conditions. In general, the primary choice for the sheath is a zirconium alloy and the fuel is an enriched uranium dioxide (UO2). The sheath-temperature design limit is 850°C, and the industry accepted limit for the fuel centerline temperature is 1850°C. Previous studies have shown that the maximum fuel centerline temperature of a UO2 pellet might exceed this industry accepted limit at SCWR conditions. Therefore, alternative fuels with higher thermal conductivities need to be investigated for SCWR use. Uranium carbide (UC), uranium nitride (UN), and uranium dicarbide (UC2) are excellent fuel choices as they all have higher thermal conductivities compared with conventional nuclear fuels such as UO2, mixed oxides (MOX), and thoria (ThO2). Inconel-600 has been selected as the sheath material due its high corrosion resistance and high yield strength in aggressive supercritical water (SCW) at high-temperatures. This paper presents the thermalhydraulics calculations of a generic PT-type SCWR fuel channel with a 43-element Inconel-600 bundle with UC and UC2 fuels. The bulk-fluid, sheath and fuel centerline temperature profiles, together with a heat transfer coefficient profile, were calculated for a generic PT-type SCWR fuel-bundle string. Fuel bundles with UC and UC2 fuels with various axial heat flux profiles (AHFPs) are acceptable since they do not exceed the sheath-temperature design limit of 850°C, and the industry accepted limit for the fuel centerline temperature of 1850°C. The most desirable case in terms of the lowest fuel centerline temperature is the UC fuel with the upstream-skewed cosine AHFP. In this case, the fuel centerline temperature does not exceed even the sheath-temperature design limit of 850°C.

The M7A-03 gas turbine, an 8 MW class, single shaft gas turbine, is the latest model of the Kawasaki M7A series. Because of the high thermal efficiency and the high exhaust gas temperature, it is particularly suitable for distributed power generation, cogeneration and combined-cycle applications. About the development of M7A-03 gas turbine, Kawasaki has taken the experience of the existing M7A-01 and M7A-02 series into consideration, as a baseline. Furthermore, the latest technology of aerodynamics and cooling design, already applied to the 18 MW class Kawasaki L20A, released in 2000, has been applied to the M7A-03. Kawasaki has adopted the design concept for achieving reliability within the shortest possible development period by selecting the same fundamental engine specifications of the existing M7A-02 – mass air flow rate, pressure ratio, TIT, etc. However, the M7A-03 has been attaining a thermal efficiency of greater than 2.5 points higher and an output increment of over 660 kW than the M7A-02, by the improvement in aerodynamic performance of the compressor, turbine and exhaust diffuser, improved turbine cooling, and newer seal technology. In addition, the NOx emission of the combustor is low and the M7A-03 has a long service life. These functions make long-term continuous operation possible under various environmental restraints. Lower life cycle costs are achieved by the engine high performance, and the high-reliability resulting from simple structure. The prototype M7A-03 gas-turbine development test started in the spring of 2006 and it has been confirmed that performance, mechanical characteristics, and emissions have achieved the initial design goals.

A new optical torque measurement method was applied to diagnosis of thermal efficiency of advanced combined cycle, i.e. ACC, plants. Since the ACC power plant comprises a steam turbine and a gas turbine and both of them are connected to the same generator, it is difficult to identify which turbine in the plant deteriorates the performance when the plant efficiency is reduced. The sensor measures axial distortion caused by power transmission by use of He-Ne laser beams, small stainless steel reflectors having bar-code patterns, and a technique of signal processing featuring high frequency. The sensor was applied to the ACC plants of TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY, TEPCO, following the success in the application to the early combined cycle plants of TEPCO. The sensor performance was inspected over a year. After an improvement related to the signal process, it is considered that the sensor performance has reached a practical use level.
