Chapter 5 examines the impact of gentrification processes in Berlin, Germany, on the distribution of older people across the city as well as the everyday experiences of ageing in socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The chapter concludes with an overview of developments in the context of political processes, where urban transformation driven by economic interests generates growing conflict and contradiction with the needs of an ageing and increasingly less affluent population.

Externalization that became prominent in 1980s with the globalization brought along dramatic changes in social and spatial areas. The social, cultural and economic events that took place on an international level thanks to globalization made the impact of change felt which was reflected on the urban space and, therefore, on the house, resulting in an increase in the importance of the residential sector. Externalization and developed economic structure enabled more investments into houses which introduced a concept of housing populated in urban fringes starting from the city centers. The housing concept which was shaped by the impacts of the urban transformation after 1980 turned into a new emerging lifestyle in Istanbul in 2000s. Accordingly, the study aims to establish the position of housing in Istanbul and new meanings formed by the socio-cultural changes. In this sense, housing before and after 1980, globalization, gentrification, urban transformation, spatial segregation, socio-economic and cultural aspects were discussed based on the structural benchmarks, and 4 different housing forms, namely the “Loft”, “Residence”, “Terraced House”, and “Gated Communities”, with individual structural examples. This study, thus, aims to question the form of tenancy of these houses created through varying concepts and concerns today. The results obtained showed that the housing as an indicator of cultural life in Istanbul has turned into a lifestyle that is shaped by similar aspects and commercial concern, despite different approaches or production forms, eliminating the traces of the cultural life of the society.

Many of the defining characteristics of the urban are shifting to virtual platforms. This process imbues all dimensions of urban life, from governance to politics and participation. During the global pandemic and the lockdown in many countries, this shift has gathered speed and is changing the way we communicate and work, challenging the everyday life of our cities. As a result, we are confronted with a new topology of negotiation, participation, governance, and control in a virtual realm. With that, rights and duties of citizens are also being transformed, which creates a new dynamic that needs to be captured to ensure an alternative way to perform and enable citizenship. What we refer to as “platform urbanization” is a planetary phenomenon that needs to be investigated as a new driving force in the transformation of the urban condition and in terms of the impact it has on citizenship and the way cities are produced.

Purpose Emerging from 20 years of violence and terrorism, the city of Medellin, Colombia, has used social transformation to improve civic culture, leading to a renaissance. The purpose of this study is to explore how social transformation can lead to urban transformation, forming the basis for sustainable, post-conflict tourism. Design/methodology/approach This case study is based on available descriptive data and direct observation supported by secondary sources. Findings The results of the research help to provide a better understanding of the conditions needed to develop and manage sustainable tourism in post-conflict environments. In so doing, it should be possible to make better policy decisions, with particular reference to social and urban interventions on planning, design and entrepreneurship. Research limitations/implications The transformation of Medellin’s civic culture can be a model for destination with similar histories that present significant destination image and branding challenges – though each will take different paths. Originality/value This paper is one of the first on post-conflict tourism that analyzes the impact on a destination and country of internal turmoil due to narco-terrorism and insurgency over a lengthy period.

Sin embargo, han sido poco expuestas y analizadas las tecnicas y el regimen juridico y economio en el que surge y se garantiza el derecho al realojo. Este trabajo pretende realizar un primer acercamiento a esta cuestion, identificando los requisitos facticos y personales, las consecuencias juridicas, asi como la praxis y procedimiento en esta materia, entendida como una faceta mas del derecho a la vivienda, actualmente en discusion y construccion. ABSTRACT: The impact over the built heritage and, specially, over residential real state where people develop our vital projects is a inseparable consequence of the urban transformation action that implies in many occasions the displacement of the affected population due to the important encumbrance of the attempted works in those properties that occupy. The change in the urban paradigm, in the classic expression expansion vs. internal reform has not meant but a constant increase of cases where general interest directly affects the right to housing and its occupation. Nevertheless, the techniques and the legal and economic regime where it arises and guarantees the right to relocation have scarcely been exposed and analyzed. This work aims at taking a first approach to the issue, by identifying the factual and personal conditions, the legal consequences and also the practice and the procedure regarding this subject as another facet of the right to housing, currently under discussion and construction.

Research Problem: Urban transformation planning policies, which have been the focus during the last decade in Turkey, have begun to progress with renewal of risky areas with the introduction of Law No. 6306. While it was stated that increasing the quality of life and social rehabilitation of area residents were targeted in transformations where neighborhoods are transformed into urban land, in fact, resident expectations were not met and the residents, who experienced dissatisfaction in the transformed environments that were not suitable for their lifestyles, left these areas or continued their lives in despair due to economic reasons. Ignorance of resident expectations in transformation process reduces their quality of life and only through participation the residents, who are the actors that experience the impact of transformation the most, could express their preferred lifestyle. Aim: The present study aimed to propose a participatory transformation model in transforming the current transformation framework into a user-oriented approach. Method: In the development of the model, the participation scenarios / strategies were integrated into the break points in the process defined in Law No. 6306 which underlines the current urban transformation dynamics. Findings: Each experience that different transformation processes which the proposed model could be applied based on its own dynamics would create new structuring processes that would contribute to the model. Based on the model, it was aimed to establish continuous communication and information flow between users, architects, authorities and other stakeholders, to increase socio-physical satisfaction of the residents since the residence and residential environment would be built based on resident demands and to sustain the sense of belonging and satisfaction of the residents with the preferences. Conclusion: The process based on the proposals that were determined with participation principle and continuous communication between all stakeholders and especially the architect and residents would establish the foundation for not only to secure risky buildings, but also for socially and economically sustainable urban transformation projects that would provide added value to the city and improve the quality of life of urban residents.

Urban sustainability is facing serious challenges both from internal and from the outside. The influence of globalization has driven urban transformation into a post-suburban form, but surprisingly, the effect of such transformation on the sustainability of cities in the context of disaster is still debated. This study aims to determine the impact of the post-suburbanization process on the occurrence of floods in the suburbs of Metropolitan Jabodetabek. This is done by building an ordinal regression model using comparison of PODES 2005 and 2014 data at the village  level. The results shown that in that period and afterwards, the growth of Jabodetabek increasingly leads toward suburban. In the new urban spatial structure, the environmental quality around the newly developed sub-centers in the west and eastward of Jakarta has been degraded. Such situation indicates that the changes in urban spatial structures also contribute to the declining. The growth of population density and built land area in the growing Jabodetabek suburban area will be followed by an increase in environmental degradation threat characterized by opportunities for greater floods. The post-suburbanization process has an impact on the declining ecological function through urbanization and land use change so that development planning around the suburbs needs to pay more attention to sustainability through efforts to maintain the functioning of river ecosystems.


As the world is getting more and more urban, the impacts of the forces of urbanization are growing more and more prolific day by day. The urban age has brought about a significant amount of transformations to spatial entities across the world. Gone are the days when cities and suburbs stood as distinctly separate entities. Today, it is difficult to say where the city ends and the suburbs begin. Both cities and suburbs today stand as a part of the ‘urban continuum’ that sprawl across many miles covering areas that were once deemed as rural. Under the impact of the forces of urbanization, the global south is transforming like never before. The Indian city of Mumbai presents a conspicuous demonstration of urban transformation where following the saturation of the city’s core the suburbs have emerged as the drivers of growth. Needless to say, Suburban Mumbai is transforming at a drastic pace. At present a particular suburb, namely, Mulund has surfaced at the forefront of this spatial transformation. Thus, an attempt is being made in this paper to analyze the urban spatial transformation of Mulund and to comprehend the socio-economic implications of this transformation. The main purpose of this study is to contribute towards achieving a greater understanding of the changing character of urban space in the suburban arena of Mumbai. The methodology of the study is based on a mixed-method approach wherein both qualitative and quantitative data of primary and secondary nature are used to draw the analysis. The findings of the study reveal the manner in which urban spatial transformation has rendered the suburb a renewed socioeconomic identity. It dwells on both positive as well as negative implications of the emerging socio-economic characteristics of the suburb

During the process of socialist modernization, initiated after WWII, large development projects in Serbia were the main drivers of urban transformation. Electrification and industrialization resulted in the establishment of new production modes, which defined a new socio-economic background for the development of settlements and the modification of their functional and morphological structure. The construction of the Bajina Basta hydroelectric power station, in the middle section of the Drina River in western Serbia, was one of the development projects, and it triggered the transformation of the environment, upgrading the pre-war small town of Bajina Basta into a new urban node, adjusted to the socialist imperatives and standards of progress.
