In the Czech Republic, Knowledge Management-related problems occur at all knowledge stages with difficulties more predominant at an organisational level. In principal, they originate from the lack of an utilisable and detailed KM implementation methodology; varying perceptions of KM coupled with the notion, that KM equates and is limited to information technologies and the like. As a reaction to these problems, the Faculty of Informatics and Management at the University of Hradec Králové (FIM UHK) developed a new KM implementation methodology. It aims to provide interested parties with a set of ground rules distributed among a number of phases. Further development is underway to elaborate the method by integrating project management tools, benchmarking exercises and critical success factors. Despite this endeavour, there is an on-going need for further research given the reality that small and medium sized enterprises constitute the majority of organisations in the Czech Republic.

In their current constitutions, both the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic share common roots owed to their 74-year history of one nation. Following independence, however, there are noticeable differences in the further development of their current constitutions. This article provides an overview of definitions of the parliamentary and the semi-presidential systems of government, explores relevant events and constitutional jurisdiction, and continues with a comparison of the current position of the head of state and its particular competences in both countries. In conclusion, the article states that both the Czech and the Slovak Republic have a clearly parliamentary system of government.

The current uncertain and rapidly changing time requires a thorough analysis of the actual situation and subsequent appropriate decision-making in many areas. This applies to the individual national economies and their particular sectors, as well. Therefore, the topic of development forecasting is becoming even more important nowadays. The presented paper deals with forecasting associated to the further development of the selected national economy through modeling via simulation technique. The country of selection is the Czech Republic. The gross domestic product (GDP) is chosen as the indicator that the most reliably reflects the national economy condition. Therefore, a prediction of the potential GDP development is realized. The obtained findings are applied to the industry segment.

The paper deals with the conception of the professional manager. In the current Czech management environment the terms of professionalism and professional manager are not defined, understood and respect properly. The paper was written on the basis of a primary research among 112 middle and top managers in the Czech Republic. The beginning of the paper focuses on the introduction of the method used for the research and then follows the evaluation process of the respondents’ answers. These answers were noticed and transformed into the electronic form for the subsequent evaluation process, which is described in detail in the results part. The categories were stated on the basis of recurrence of the characteristics in the answers, and the frequency of these characteristics was measured. The outcome of the paper is the specification of the term ‘Professionalism’ and the characteristics of the term ‘Professional Manager’ by above mentioned research. The research results are discussed with the literature review in the concluding part, and the opportunities for the further development are given.

The paper focuses on furniture production industry in the Czech Republic and evaluates the influence of competition forces within this industry. These forces have a direct impact on success of competitive strategies of the firms. Furniture production industry is a typical branch occupied by numerous small and medium-sized firms. Small firms aim on satisfying domestic (or rather local) demand, medium-sized and big firms are much more aiming on exports. The methodical sources for evaluation of rivalry represent particular influences defined by Porter in his model of five competitive forces. Main influences identified by Porter, which are increasing the intensity of competition in the furniture production industry in the Czech Republic include low industry concentration, relatively low diversity of competitors, decline in sales, low (or none) switching costs, and existing excessive capacity within the industry. Further development will be most significantly influenced by a growing concentration of the bigger Czech producers on domestic market and overall economic development.
