In a seismic incident, the structural steel columns are commonly damaged with local buckling formulation at either the top or bottom ends. This study analyzes and simulates the hysteretic behavior of a hollow square steel column under cyclic loading by adopting the fiber-element approach. This method discretizes the hinge zone into a series of fibers and considers buckling behavior of those fibers along the column wall. The analytical result was achieved in good agreement with the component test.

In this study, detailed finite element analysis was conducted to examine the seismic performance of square and circular hollow steel braces under axial cyclic loading. Finite element models of braces were constructed using ABAQUS finite element analysis (FEA) software and validated with experimental results from previous papers to expand the specimen’s matrix. The influences of cross-section shape, slenderness ratio, and width/diameter-to-thickness ratio on hysteretic behavior and compressive-tensile strength degradation were studied. Simulation results of parametric studies show that both square and circular hollow braces have a better cyclic performance with smaller slenderness and width/diameter-to-thickness ratios, and their compressive-tensile resistances ratio significantly decreases from cycle to cycle after the occurrence of the global buckling of braces.

The aim of the recently completed European research program Meakado is therefore to study design options with requirements proportioned to the actual seismic context of constructions in areas characterized by a low or moderate seismic hazard, contrary to most researches aiming at maximizing the seismic performances. In this general framework, specific investigations have been carried out regarding typical beam profiles commonly used for multi-bay - multi-storey composite frames. In a first stage, experimental tests on class-3 composite beam-to-column connections were performed. The measurement results were evaluated with regard to the development of the hysteretic behavior with particular emphasis on the degradation. These test results have been used as reference for the calibration and validation of numerical model aiming at extending the scope of the experimental outcomes through appropriate parametric variations regarding the behavior of nodal connections as well as towards the global analysis and behavior of structures made of class 3 and 4 profiles. Numerical investigations of the global performance of composite frames with slender cross-sections are then performed resorting to the numerical model previously calibrated with respect to the experimental tests and additional simulations at node level. Results are compared to the performance of an equivalent frame made of compact steel profiles. Attention is paid to the effects of strength and stiffness degradation due to local buckling. The analysis of the results is specifically focusing on the comparison of the rotation capacity of the slender section with the actual rotation demand imposed by a moderate intensity earthquake. Based on the outcomes of these investigations, practical design recommendations are finally derived for multi-storey, multi-bay moment resisting frames with type b (full composite action) beam-to column connections located in low and moderate seismicity regions.

The focus of this research program is T-shaped CFT central column to steel frame beam connection. 3 joints with strong columns-weak beams and 1 joint with strong beams-weak columns 1:2 scale specimens were tested under constant axial loads and cyclic horizontal loads. Overall impact of axial force ratio and beam to column linear stiffness ratio on joint failure mechanism, hysteretic behavior, deformation ductility, and energy dissipation capability was investigated. Results showed that the failure mechanism for specimens with strong columns-weak beams was local buckling of the steel beam flanges and formation of the plastic hinges. There was minimum damage on the concrete column and joint panel zone. For a specimen with strong beams-weak columns, there was local buckling fracture on steel tube above and below the joint panel zone. Crushing of the core concrete was also observed with formation of the column hinges. It was found that both axial forces and beam to column linear stiffness ratio had impacts on joint capacity and ductility behavior of the specimens. Experiment results showed that the joint models had deformation ductility factor between 3.39 and 3.91 and viscous damping ratio between 0.46 and 0.51.

Structures are expected to have ductile behavior under major earthquakes. One requirement to achieve this ductile behavior is when the structures have no shear failures in their elements. This paper discusses a new method by using the embedded steel truss in the flexural plastic hinges of beam to avoid shear failure. As already known that the shear strength provided by the concrete will be decreased when the ductility of flexural plastic hinges develop in a member. Therefore, a conservative procedure by ignoring the role of concrete in flexural plastic hinges in resisting the shear demand is adopted by some codes. This will increase the demand for shear reinforcement provided by the stirrup or transverse reinforcement in the plastic hinge; yet it still does not ensure that the shear failure does not come to happen. From the laboratory test results under cyclic loading in this study, it can be noted that the beam with embedded steel truss in the plastic hinge has better hysteretic behavior than the one without the embedded steel truss. The evaluation of test result is also shown the strength of the beam with the embedded steel truss in the plastic hinge is not reduced with an increase in the amplitude of the drift of 1.4 to 3.5. Besides, the strength of the beam without embedded steel truss in the plastic hinge is reduced with an increase in the amplitude of the drift after reaching 2.5.

Due to the insufficient radial stiffness of the steel tube, the cracking of the weld and the plastic deformation of the string often occur under the cyclic loading of the hollow section pipe joint. In order to avoid such a failure, the overlapped K-joints were strengthened by pouring different concrete into the chords. Furthermore, to explore the detailed effect of filling different concrete in a chord on the hysteretic behavior of the overlapped K-joints, six full-scale specimens were fabricated by two forms, which included the circular chord and braces, the square chord and circular braces, and the low cyclic loading tests, which were carried out. The failure modes, hysteretic curves and skeleton curves of the joints were obtained, and the bearing capacity, ductility and energy dissipation of the joints were evaluated quantitatively. The results showed that plastic failure occurs on the surface of the chord of the joints without filling concrete, while the failure mode of the joints filled with concrete in the chords was the tensile failure of the chords at the weld of the brace toe, and the compressive braces had a certain buckling deformation; The strengthening measures of concrete filled with chord can effectively improve the mechanical properties of the K-joints, the delay of the plastic deformation of the chord, and improve the bearing capacity of the K-joints. Contrarily, the ductility coefficient and the energy dissipation ratio of K-joints decreased with the concrete filled in the chord. The hysteretic behavior of the K-joints with a circular chord and brace was slightly better than that of the K-joints with a square chord and circular brace, and the hysteretic behavior of the K-joints strengthened with fly ash concrete, which was better than that of the K-joints strengthened with ordinary concrete. The results of ANSYS (a large general finite element analysis software developed by ANSYS Company in the United States) analysis agreed well with the experimental results.

AbstractIn this paper, the thermomechanical behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs) subjected to uniaxial cyclic loading is investigated. To obtain experimental data, the strain-controlled cyclic loading-unloading tests are conducted at various strain-rates and temperatures. Dislocations slip and deformation twins are considered to be the main reason that causes the unique cyclic mechanical behavior of SMAs. A new variable of shape memory residual factor was introduced, which will tend to zero with the increasing of the number of cycles. Exponential form equations are established to describe the evolution of shape memory residual factor, elastic modulus and critical stress, in which the influence of strain-rate, number of cycles and temperature are taken into account. The relationship between critical stresses and temperature is modified by considering the cycling effect. A macromechanical constitutive model was constructed to predict the cyclic mechanical behavior at constant temperature. Based on the material parameters obtained from test results, the hysteretic behavior of SMAs subjected to isothermal uniaxial cyclic loading is simulated. It is shown that the numerical results of the modified model match well with the test results.

Overall 12 specimens were experimentally investigated in this paper to study the hysteretic behaviors of the concrete-filled square CFRP-steel tubular (S-CFRP-CFST) beam-columns. The test results indicated that CFRP can provide transverse confinement effect and longitudinal strengthening effect for the concrete filled square steel tubular (S-CFST) beam-columns effectively and the local buckling of the steel tube is deferred. The hysteretic load-deflection curves and the hysteretic moment-curvature curves at the mid-span of all the specimens are generally plump, and it shows these specimens have good hysteretic performance. In the later loading period, the load bearing capacity drops.
