Effect of printing parameters on the tensile strength of FDM 3D samples: a meta-analysis focusing on layer thickness and sample orientation

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate and discuss the influence of printing parameters on the mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) print by fused deposition modelling (FDM). The mechanical properties of ABS are highly influenced by printing parameters, and they determine the final product quality of printed pieces. Design/methodology/approach For the paper’s purpose, five main parameters (extrusion temperature, infill pattern, air gap, printing speed and layer thickness) were selected and varied during ABS printing on an open-source and self-replicable FDM printer. Three different colors of commercially available ABS were also used to investigate color and printing parameter’s influence on the tensile strength. Findings The research results suggest that two parameters (infill pattern and layer thickness) were most influential on the mechanical properties of print ABS, being able to enhance its tensile strength. Another key influential factor was material color selected prior to printing, which influenced the tensile strength of the print specimen. Originality/value This study provides information on print parameters’ influence on the tensile strength of ABS print on replicable open-source three-dimensional (3D) printers. It also suggests the influence of materials’ color on print pieces’ tensile strength, indicating a new parameter for materials selection for 3D printing.

This research work highlights the mechanical properties of multi-material by fused deposition modelling (FDM). The specimens for tensile and flexural test have been printed using polycarbonate (PC) material at different combinations of printing parameters. The effects of varied printing speed, infill density and nozzle diameter on the mechanical properties of specimens have been investigated. Multi-material specimens were fabricated with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as the base material and PC as the reinforced material at the optimum printing parameter combination. The specimens were then subjected to mechanical testing to observe their tensile strength, Young’s modulus, percentage elongation, flexural strength and flexural modulus. The outcome of replacing half of ABS with PC to create a multi-material part has been examined. As demonstrated by the results, the optimum combination of printing parameters is 60 mm/s printing speed, 15% infill density and 0.8 mm nozzle diameter. The combination of ABS and PC materials as reinforcing material has improved the tensile strength (by 38.46%), Young’s modulus (by 23.40%), flexural strength (by 23.90%) and flexural modulus (by 37.33%) while reducing the ductility by 14.31% as compared to pure ABS. The results have been supported by data and graphs of the analysed specimens.

Abstract Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a widely adopted additive manufacturing process to produce complex 3D structures and it is typically used in the fabrication of biodegradable materials e.g. PLA/PHA for biomedical applications. However, FDM as a fabrication process for such material needs to be optimized to enhance mechanical properties. In this study, dogbone and notched samples are printed with the FDM process to determine optimum values of printing parameters for superior mechanical properties. The effect of layer thickness, infill density, and print bed temperature on mechanical properties is investigated by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Optimum printing parameters are identified for tensile and impact strength and an empirical relation has been formulated with response surface methodology (RSM). Furthermore, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on the experimental results to determine the influence of the process parameters and their interactions. ANOVA results demonstrate that 44.7% infill density, 0.44 mm layer thickness, and 20C° printing temperatures are the optimum values of printing parameters owing to improved tensile and impact strength respectively. The experimental results were found in strong agreement with the predicted theoretical results.

Fused filament fabrication (FFF) combined with debinding and sintering could be an economical process for three-dimensional (3D) printing of metal parts. In this paper, compounding, filament making, and FFF processing of feedstock material with 55% vol. of 17-4PH stainless steel powder in a multicomponent binder system are presented. The experimental part of the paper encompasses central composite design for optimization of the most significant 3D printing parameters (extrusion temperature, flow rate multiplier, and layer thickness) to obtain maximum tensile strength of the 3D-printed specimens. Here, only green specimens were examined in order to be able to determine the optimal parameters for 3D printing. The results show that the factor with the biggest influence on the tensile properties was flow rate multiplier, followed by the layer thickness and finally the extrusion temperature. Maximizing all three parameters led to the highest tensile properties of the green parts.

The acceptance and application of functional parts produced via additive manufacturing technologies is faced with challenges of poor surface finish, dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties among other which is mostly dependent on process parameters employed. In this study, the effect of infill density, layer thickness and extrusion temperature on mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) part manufactured using fused deposition modelling process was investigated to obtain optimum process parameters to achieve the best properties. Solid cuboid bars were produced from which tensile, impact and hardness test specimens were obtained. A statistical approach based on Taguchi design of experiment was employed with process parameters varied and grey relational analysis coupled with principal component analysis was employed to obtain the unified optimum parameter. The single optimisation results showed that 50% infill density, 220°C extrusion temperature and 0.4 mm layer thickness resulted in best tensile strength; 30% density, 210°C temperature and 0.2 mm layer thickness is required to achieve the best impact strength, while 50% density, 215°C temperature and 0.3 mm thickness is required for highest hardness. The multi-response optimisation indicated that for the best of all the three properties to be achieved at once in a PLA built part, 50% infill density, 220°C extrusion temperature and 0.3 mm is required which yielded tensile strength of 30.02±2.15 MPa, impact strength 4.20±0.12 J and hardness of 76.80±0.38 BHN.

The tensile strength and energy absorption of adhesive butt joints at high rates of loading are determined with a tensile split Hopkinson bar using a cylindrical specimen. A commercially available single-component cyanoacrylate adhesive (instantaneous adhesive) and two different adherend materials are used in the adhesion tests. The impact tensile strength of the cyanoacrylate adhesive butt joints is determined from the applied tensile stress history at failure initiation. The impact absorbed energy is obtained by numerical integration of dynamic tensile load-adhesive deformation data. Comparative tension tests at low and intermediate rates of loading are performed on an Instron testing machine. An axisymmetric finite element analysis is carried out to investigate the stress distributions in the adhesive layer of the cyanoacrylate adhesive butt joints. The effects of loading rate, adherend material and adhesive layer thickness on the tensile strength and energy absorption of the cyanoacrylate adhesive butt joints are examined in detail. It is shown that the joint tensile strength increases significantly with increasing loading rate and is greatly affected by both the adhesive layer thickness and the adherend materials. The limitations of the technique are discussed.

In 3DP process, part has a large contour error due to the print machine, printing parameters, the characters of part materials and other factors. In this paper, based on the result from the Part I, the experimental method is used to study on the part contour error by placing 56 cubes in the manufacturing box in 3DP process. When the binder saturation level and the powder layer thickness are fixed, the contour error for cubes in X, Y and Z directions is obtained, and the leaking error compensation value, also means bleed compensation for the binder in different directions are achieved, and bleed compensation is used to calibrate the printer parameters. The case study also verifies the result in 3DP process, which is effectiveness in parts’ contour error compensation.
