Laminated veneer lumber is taken as an object of study, and use LVL specimens of different sizes for compression test and tensile test. The goal of the experiment is to investigate the size effect on compressive strength and tensile strength as well as the influence of the secondary glued laminated face, which appears in the secondary molding processes. The results show that both compressive strength and tensile strength have the size effect apparently and the existence of the secondary glued laminated face lower the compressive strength of LVL specimens. Afterwards, the relationship between compressive strength and volume along with tensile strength and area are obtained by the test results.

As a heat treatable aluminum alloy to be used in T6 and T8 temper, belongs to Al-Cu-Li system, a novel high-strength aluminum-lithium alloy 2A97 was developed. In order to improve the relationships of strength and ductility and fracture toughness, and to urge the applications in the aeronautical and aerospace industries, the effects of normal heat treatments and thermomechanical heat treatments on the mechanical properties and fracture toughness were investigated by Transmission Electron Microscope(TEM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), tensile test, and fracture toughness test. The results show that for the alloy aged at 135 °C for 24 h after quenching and 4 percent plastic deformation, its microstructures are strengthened by strain hardening and precipitation hardening, consisting of fine T1phase, θ″/θ′ phase and δ′ phase densely and homogeneously distributed in the matrix. It yields optimum relationship of strength and ductility, fracture toughness, its σ0.2, σband δ5are 454 MPa, 536 MPa, and 11.8%, respectively. It yields 43.5 MPa·m1/2of Kqvalues higher than that of 42.5 MPa·m1/2 in T6 temper. The fracture morphologies of impact tensile samples of fracture toughness test and normal tensile test were observed, indicating the dominance of intergranular failure and subintergranular failure with some dimples and trangranular failure.

VC/Fe composite samples were fabricated by sintering at 1050, 1100 and 1150°C in vacuum. The microstructure and mechanical properties of samples were examined, and the relationship of structure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe composite sintered at different temperature were studied. The results show that fracture toughness, hardness and density is increasing obviously at 1050-1100°Cwith the increasing sintering temperature, but the growth trend increases slowly at 1100-1150°C; in whole process with temperature increased, Flexure strength heighten trend obviously. The microstructure of VC/Fe composite changed from particles piled up together to the microstructure particles closely, VC particles set gradually into Fe with temperature increased, and the gap reduced gradually.

In this work, rods of Al2O3–TiO2eutectics containing 65 and 60 wt% Al2O3were grown using the laser floating zone method. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the phase composition. Creep strength of Al2O3–Al16Ti5O34(65AT) eutectic at 1500°C has 320 MPa, which is about higher thanβ–Al2TiO5/Al2O3(60AT) crystal. Temperature dependence flexure strength, hardness, elasticity and fracture toughness of the Al2O3–Al16Ti5O34andβ–Al2TiO5/Al2O3crystals were analyzed. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties were analyzed the 60 and 65AT eutectic crystals.

The Nb-Si system ultrahigh temperature alloys were prepared by vacuum non-consumable arc melting. The influence of micro-alloying elements of B and Ce on the hardness, room-temperature fracture toughness and compressive strength at 1250°C of the Nb-22Ti-3Si alloys was investigated and estimated systematically. The results showed that the hardness of the Nb-22Ti-3Si alloy increased obviously with trace B addition, but decreased slightly with trace Ce addition. The room-temperature fracture toughness of the Nb-22Ti-3Si alloy was degraded by the Ce addition but improved by the trace addition of B. The trace addition of B improved the compressive strength of the alloy at 1250°C. In contrast, the trace Ce addition degraded the compressive strength at 1250°C. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was discussed.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of samples were examined, and the relationship of structure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe composite sintered at different holding time were studied. Holding time can influence the mechanical properties, with the holding time rising, when the holding time is 80 min, the hardness is Max, it’s 10.71 GPa, the enhancing range is 37.66%; The relative density changes slower from 60 to 100 min; when the holding time is 60 minutes, fracture toughness and bending strength of material is 16.17 MPa•m 1/2 and 1070 MPa, it’s better than before.

The effect of strontium (Sr) addition (0.2 at.%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys were studied. Microstructure of the alloys was observed by scanning electron microscope, and their phase compositions were analyzed with X-ray diffraction and Electro-Probe Microanalyzer. The room temperature fracture toughness was measured. The results indicated that the phases of Nbss and Nb3Si were presented in Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys. However, with the Al and Sr addition, the alloys were composed of Nbss and β-Nb5Si3. Compared with the Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys, the value of room temperature fracture toughness increased about 46% and 73% with the addition of Al and Sr alloy, respectively. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was discussed.

VC/Fe-based composite samples were fabricated with different volume fraction of VC in vacuum, and the content are 40%, 55%, and 70% respectively. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe based composite with various VC content were studied. The results indicated VC content had a significant effect on the performance and organization of the VC/Fe-based composites and the effect of VC content on the mechanical properties are varied. With ratio of VC powders increased, the volume fraction of V8C7 particles formed additionally, while the fraction of Fe particles slightly decreased. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, relative density and wear resistant increased with increase of VC content in the range of 0 to 55vol. %, and then decreased with further increase of VC content, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of VC content. By comparing the material with 55vol.%VC would show the best combination of properties in the prepared samples.

Mechanical properties of the pre-strained material are different with those of virgin material without pre-strain. Buried pipelines for natural gas transmission may be deformed by outside force such as ground subsidence, ground liquefaction, cold bending and mechanical damage. Plastic deformation affects the tensile properties and fracture toughness. The effects of prestrain on the mechanical properties of API 5L X65 pipe were diversely investigated through the tensile test, crack tip opening displacement test and Charpy impact test. Axial tensile pre-strain of 1.5, 5 and 10% was applied to plate-type tensile specimens cut from the pipe body prior to mechanical testing. Tensile test revealed that yield strength and tensile strength were increased with increasing tensile pre-strain. However, Fracture toughness for crack initiation decreased with increasing tensile pre-strain. Structural integrity evaluation of the API 5L X65 pipe with crack-like flaws was assessed by using the level 2 in the API 579 code.
