Abstract. Two studies carried out among Albanian public-sector employees examined the impact of different types of affirmative action policies (AAPs) on (counter)stereotypical perceptions of women in decision-making positions. Study 1 (N = 178) revealed that participants – especially women – perceived women in decision-making positions as more masculine (i.e., agentic) than feminine (i.e., communal). Study 2 (N = 239) showed that different types of AA had different effects on the attribution of gender stereotypes to AAP beneficiaries: Women benefiting from a quota policy were perceived as being more communal than agentic, while those benefiting from weak preferential treatment were perceived as being more agentic than communal. Furthermore, we examined how the belief that AAPs threaten men’s access to decision-making positions influenced the attribution of these traits to AAP beneficiaries. The results showed that men who reported high levels of perceived threat, as compared to men who reported low levels of perceived threat, attributed more communal than agentic traits to the beneficiaries of quotas. These findings suggest that AAPs may have created a backlash against its beneficiaries by emphasizing gender-stereotypical or counterstereotypical traits. Thus, the framing of AAPs, for instance, as a matter of enhancing organizational performance, in the process of policy making and implementation, may be a crucial tool to countering potential backlash.

Prior studies revealed that low levels of youth political activity are not necessarily indicative of complete disengagement from societal affairs but could be accompanied by interest and latent involvement stemming from a standby or monitorial attitude. However, no prior study has investigated patterns of citizenship orientations including both manifest and latent engagement defined by one’s position towards institutional politics, according to different forms of participation. A questionnaire was filled out by 1,732 late adolescents and young adults in Italy (15–30 years old, M = 19.73, 60.7% female). Cluster analysis identified six profiles of citizenship orientations across different types of participatory activities (political, activist, political online and civic): active trustful, active distrustful, standby trustful, standby distrustful, unengaged trustful and unengaged distrustful. The results showed that each level of engagement—active, standby and unengaged—could be further differentiated between trustful and distrustful based on their attitude towards institutions and the electoral process.

Plasma steroids (cortisol, progesterone, estrone and estradiol) were studied during the peripartum period in cows with three different types of parturition: unifoetal normal (VUN), unifoetal with retained placenta (VRP), multifoetal with or without retained placenta (VG). In the control group, cortisol rose gradually from 8 ng/ml on day −7 to 11 ng/ml on the day of parturition and thereafter came back to the level of day −7. In the VRP group, cortisol was slightly lower than in the control on day −7 and it did not vary significantly before or after parturition. In the group of cows with multiple births, where retained placenta was encountered in 3/4 cases, cortisol was much higher than in control animals. Plasma progesterone decreased gradually from 5.5 ng/ml to less than 1 ng/ml on the day of parturition in the control group. In the group VRP and VG, it was significantly higher than in the control on the 2 days before and on the day of parturition. The patterns of estrone and estradiol were similar in the groups VUN and VRP until the first day following parturition, but much higher in the cows giving birth to twins. During the postpartum period, the drop in estrogens was much slower in the VRP and VG groups than in the VUN control group. These results suggest that retention of the placenta is not linked with the plasma concentration of cortisol but rather associated with an increased level of progesterone on the day of parturition and that the slower decrease in estrogen levels after parturition would be the result of the persisting attachment of the foetal membranes.

ObjectivesThis research is designed to validate a novel clean-in-place type antimicrobial ice-based meat grinder sanitation method.Materials and MethodsFour different types of antimicrobial ice were prepared from peracetic acid (PAA, 350 mg/L) and combination PAA with 2% FreshFX® (PAAF), 2% Paradigm® (PAAP) and 2% lactic acid (PAAL). The grinders were inoculated by processing 400 g beef trim containing 400 μL of E. coli O157:H7 or S. Typhimurium DT 104 suspensions at 8.4 to 8.7 (high inoculation) and 5.3 to 5.5 (low inoculation) log CFU/mL. Each meat grinder was then treated by processing 1000 g of antimicrobial ice and 500 mL of corresponding antimicrobial solution. At the end of each treatment, 400 g un-inoculated beef was processed through the meat grinder, and the resulting ground beef was then analyzed for the presence of target pathogens by direct plating and after enrichment. Efficacies of antimicrobial ice-based treatments were compared with 1000 g deionized water ice + 500 mL deionized water (DI), and no treatment (NT) controls.ResultsAll antimicrobial ice treatments were able to reduce cross-contamination to non-detectable levels from the meat grinders inoculated at the low levels of pathogens, but after enrichment, target pathogens were detected in all the samples. Recoveries from the meat grinder inoculated with high levels of pathogens ranged from 5.95 to 3.50 log CFU/g and 5.86 to 3.46 log CFU/g for E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium DT 104, respectively. All antimicrobial ice treatments were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) more effective in reducing cross-contamination in comparison of NT and DI controls. The microbial reductions achieved by different antimicrobial ice treatments were not significantly (p ≤ 0.05) different from each other.ConclusionThe antimicrobial ice-based meat grinder sanitation technique could effectively reduce foodborne pathogens from meat grinders without needing meat grinder disassembly.

There have been extensive theoretical and experimental studies of different types of components, developed the calculation methods of composites production with predefined properties.</span></p><p class="R-AbstractKeywords"><span lang="EN-US">At the same time industry produces a lot of mineral and polymer waste, which are practically technogenic resources, but their use is currently at quite low levels. The paper examines the possibilities to use technogenic resources- mineral (such as ash and clay) and organic (polymers -PET containers) for producing qualitative composite materials. For this purpose theoretical analysis and calculations of the physical properties of components and process parameters that determine the operating characteristics of the composite material were carried out.</span></p><p class="R-AbstractKeywords"><span lang="EN-US">Composite-forming process efficiency determinative parameters were analysed: adhesion, the specific surface energy, specific free surface, adsorption capacity and the degree of dispersion of the particles.</span></p><p class="R-AbstractKeywords"><span lang="EN-US">The role of external factors in processing of composite were examined – temperature, concentration of components.</span></p><p class="R-AbstractKeywords"><span lang="EN-US">The characteristics of prepared samples of composites showed the possibility to use these waste for the development of qualitative products for different purposes.</span></p>

Functional TATA elements in the 5' untranslated region of the CYC1 gene in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been defined by transcriptional analysis of site-directed mutations. Five sites previously suggested to contain functional TATA elements were altered individually and in all possible combinations. The results indicated that only two elements are required for transcription at the normal level and the normal start sites. The two functional TATA elements are located at sites -178 and -123, where the A of the ATG start codon is assigned nucleotide position +1. They direct initiation within windows encompassing -70 to -46 and -46 to -28, respectively. Only when both of the upstream TATA sites were rendered nonfunctional were the third and fourth downstream TATA-like sequences activated, as indicated by the presence of low levels of transcription starting at -28. The two upstream functional TATA elements differed in sequence. The sequence of the most 5' one at site 1, denoted beta-type, was ATATATATAT, whereas that of the second one at site 2, denoted alpha-type, was TATATAAAA. The following rearrangements of the beta-type and alpha-type elements at two sites (1 and 2) were examined: site1 beta-site2 alpha; site 1 alpha-site 2 beta; site1 alpha-site2 alpha; and site1 beta-site2 beta. When different types were at different sites (site1 beta-site2 alpha and site1 alpha-site2 beta), both were used equally. In contrast, when the same type was present at both sites (site1 alpha-site2 alpha and site1 beta-site2 beta), only the upstream element was used. We suggest that the two TATA elements are recognized by different factors of the transcription apparatus.

We argue that large-scale, standards-based improvements in the teaching and learning of mathematics necessitate advances in our theories regarding how teaching affects student learning and progress in how we measure instruction. Our theory—an embodiment of the interaction of high and low levels of two constructs that past research has shown to influence students’ development of conceptual understanding (explicit attention to concepts and students’ opportunity to struggle)—guided the development of survey-, video-, and artifact-based measures of teaching. Here, we develop a validity argument for the inferences that can be drawn about teaching from these measures by identifying claims and empirical evidence about the extent to which those claims are born out in practice. Results suggest our theory is capturing four patterns of teaching and that it can successfully predict different types of student learning: skills efficiency measured on the state standardized test and conceptual understanding as measured through open-ended task sets.

The distribution patterns of Orthoptera are described for the boreal zone. The boreal fauna of Eurasia includes more than 81 species. Many of them are widely distributed. The monotypic genusParacyphoderrisStorozhenko and at least 13 species are endemics or subendemics. About 50 species are known from boreal North America. Four endemic species are distributed very locally. Relationships between the faunas of the Eurasian and North American parts of the boreal zone are relatively weak. The boreal assemblages are usually characterized by the low levels of species diversity and abundance. Grasshoppers and their relatives occupy almost exclusively open habitats, such as different types of meadows, mountain steppes and tundras, clearings, openings, bogs, and stony flood plains. The local endemics and subendemics are found only in some habitats of the eastern part of Eurasia and the north-western part of North America. Retrospective and prospective of the boreal fauna of Orthoptera are also discussed.

The aim of this study was to explore the behavioral profiles of children of various types of social status, in a sample of 54 preschool children (15 boys, 39 girls; mean age = 5.15 years), using an observational method. Popular, rejected, neglected and controversial types of social status were defined by direct observation of the behaviors received by each child from their peers. Behavioral profiles were obtained from the time budget of activities exhibited by each subject during free play time. Popular children showed high levels of hierarchical play and sociability and low levels of all aggression subtypes; rejected children showed high levels in person-directed and seizing object aggressions and did not engage in hierarchical play; neglected children displayed low levels of hierarchical play and sociability and higher than average levels only in seizing object aggression; and controversial children showed high levels of sociability and low levels of hierarchical play. The results highlight the relevance of hierarchical play in social acceptance and its possible effectiveness as an intervention tool.

Athletes oftentimes own and direct their own philanthropic foundations to make positive prosocial impacts at every level, from global down to local. A key challenge for these foundations is to communicate effectively with their target audiences to obtain support from them. By drawing from the construal-level theory and athlete identification literature, the current study examines the effects of different types of messages (hedonic vs. meaningful) on sport consumers’ supportive behaviors toward an athlete’s charitable foundation as a function of fans’ level of athlete identification. Results indicated that the use of a meaningful message lead to greater degrees of supportive behavior from sport consumers with low levels of athlete identification than on- and off-field hedonic messages. In contrast, among highly identified sport consumers, both hedonic and meaningful messages elicited greater support for an athlete-owned foundation.
