Abstract Background It is well known that recruitment is a challenging aspect of any study involving human subjects. This challenge is exacerbated when the population sought is reticent to participate in research as is the case with pregnant women and individuals with depression. This paper compares recruitment methods used for the Food, Feelings, and Family Study, an observational, longitudinal pilot study concerning how diet and bisphenol A exposure affect maternal mood and cognitive function during and after pregnancy. Methods Pregnant women were recruited to this study over a period of 15 months using traditional methods, social media including paid and unpaid posts, and emails broadcast to the university community. Contingency analysis using the Pearson’s Chi-square test was used to determine if recruitment method was associated with likelihood of participation. T-tests were used to analyze Facebook advertisement success. ANOVAs and Fisher exact tests were used to determine if recruitment method was related to continuous and categorical demographics, respectively. Results Social media resulted in the largest number of recruits, followed by traditional methods and broadcast email. Women recruited through social media were less likely to participate. In contrast, use of broadcast email resulted in a smaller pool of recruits but these recruits were more likely to be eligible for and complete the study. Most women recruited via social media were the result of unpaid posts to the study’s Facebook page. Paid posts lasting at least 4 days were the most successful. Recruitment method was not associated with participant demographics. Conclusions Social media has the potential to recruit a large pool of potential subjects; however, when studies require a large time investment such as the case here, women recruited through social media are less likely to participate and complete the study than women recruited through other means. Background Health-related social media use is common but few health organisations have embraced its potential for engaging stakeholders in service design and quality improvement (QI). Social media may provide new ways to engage more diverse stakeholders and conduct health design and QI activities. Objective To map how social media is used by health services, providers and consumers to contribute to service design or QI activities. Methods The scoping review was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. An advisory committee of stakeholders provided guidance throughout the review. Inclusion criteria were studies of any health service stakeholders, in any health setting, where social media was used as a tool for communications which influenced or advocated for changes to health service design or delivery. A descriptive numerical summary of the communication models, user populations and QI activities was created from the included studies, and the findings were further synthesised using deductive qualitative content analysis. Results 40 studies were included. User populations included organisations, clinical and non-clinical providers, young people, people with chronic illness/disability and First Nations people. Twitter was the most common platform for design and QI activities. Most activities were conducted using two-way communication models. A typology of social media use is presented, identifying nine major models of use. Conclusion This review identifies the ways in which social media is being used as a tool to engage stakeholders in health service design and QI, with different models of use appropriate for different activities, user populations and stages of the QI cycle.

BACKGROUND Social media is an effective alternative to offline methods for participant recruitment to research. However, the effectiveness of social media compared with offline strategies among pregnant women is unclear. Further, it is unclear whether recruitment strategy alters demographic characteristics of participants. OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate recruitment rates from social media and offline methods and to explore the whether participant demographics differed according to recruitment strategy in a clinical nutrition trial that recruited 60 healthy pregnant women in Vancouver, Canada. METHODS Facebook was used to run 9 social media campaigns, 10-18 days each (15-weeks total) and costing $50-$100 CAD ($675 CAD total). Offline methods were used concurrently over 64-weeks. A total of $300 CAD was spent on printing. Demographic characteristics of those recruited via each method was compared using bivariate statistics. Cost, rate of recruitment and conversion rate in each group was calculated. Performance metrics of social media campaigns, including reach, impressions, clicks, inquiries, and enrollments, were recorded. Linear regression was used to explore the association between metrics and dollars spent per campaign. RESULTS In total, n=481 inquiries were received (n=51 [11%] via offline methods; n=430 [89%] via social media). Enrollees (n=60) included n=24 (40%) and n=36 (60%) via offline and social media methods, respectively. Gestational weeks was provided by n=251 women (52%) upon inquiry (mean ± SD gestational weeks was 13.3 ± 4.7 and 13.2 ± 5.6 in the offline and social media groups, respectively, P=.96). There were no statistically significant differences in age (33 ± 3.2 and 33 ± 3.6, P=.67), ethnicity (58% and 56% Caucasian, P=.97), education (88% and 78% had University-level education, P=.64), household income (58% and 47% >$100,000 CAD/year, P=.26), pre-pregnancy BMI (22.2 ± 2.6 and 23.4 ± 2.8, P=.11), or parity (75% and 72% nulliparous, P=.81); results are presented for offline and social media, respectively. Direct cost/enrollee was $13 and $19 in those who were recruited via offline and social media methods, respectively (however, this does not include cost of labour). Rate of recruitment was ~6x faster via social media than offline methods, however, the conversion rate was higher via offline methods than social media (47% versus 8%). Overall, campaign metrics (reach, impressions, clicks, and inquiries) improved over time. Amount spent per campaign (controlling for campaign duration) was significantly associated with improved clicks (P=.01), and inquiries (P=.04), but not enrollments (P=.19). CONCLUSIONS Social media was more efficient and effective for recruitment of pregnant women than offline methods. We gained numerous insights for optimization of social media campaigns (dollars spent, attribution setting, photo testing, automatic optimization) to increase clicks and inquiries, however this does not necessarily increase enrollments, which was more dependent on study specific factors (e.g. time of year, study design, and intervention). BACKGROUND Social media has become the most popular communication tool used by Chinese citizens, including expectant mothers. An increasing number of women have adopted various forms of social media channels, such as interactive websites, instant messaging, and mobile apps, to solve problems and obtain answers to queries during pregnancy. Although the use of the internet by pregnant women has been studied extensively worldwide, limited research exists that explores the changing social media usage habits in China, where the 1 child policy ended in 2015. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to (1) present the status quo of pregnancy-related information seeking and sharing via social media among Chinese expectant mothers, (2) reveal the impact of social media usage, and (3) shed light on pregnancy-related health services delivered via social media channels. METHODS A qualitative approach was employed to examine social media usage and its consequences on pregnant women. A total of 20 women who had conceived and were at various stages of pregnancy were interviewed from July 20 to August 10, 2017. Thematic analysis was conducted on the collected data to identify patterns in usage. RESULTS Overall, 80% (16/20) of participants were aged in their 20s (mean 28.5 years [SD 4.3]). All had used social media for pregnancy-related purposes. For the seeking behavior, 18 codes were merged into 4 themes, namely, gravida, fetus, delivery, and the postpartum period; whereas for sharing behaviors, 10 codes were merged into 4 themes, namely, gravida, fetus, delivery, and caretaker. Lurking, small group sharing, bad news avoidance, and cross-checking were identified as the preferred patterns for using social media. Overall, 95% (19/20) of participants reported a positive mental impact from using social media during their pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS It is indisputable that social media has played an increasingly important role in supporting expectant mothers in China. The specific seeking and sharing patterns identified in this study indicate that the general quality of pregnancy-related information on social media, as well as Chinese culture toward pregnancy, is improving. The new themes that merge in pregnancy-related social media use represent a shift toward safe pregnancy and the promotion of a more enjoyable pregnancy. Future prenatal care should provide further information on services related to being comfortable during pregnancy and reducing the inequality of social media–based services caused by the digital divide.

Abstract Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a disease condition present during pregnancy and if not properly managed would have severe effect on the maternal and neonatal health. This research determined the effect of diabetes education program (DEP) on gestational diabetes mellitus knowledge (GDMK) among diabetic pregnant women (DPW) and significant differences within groups.Methods: This study was based on a pretest – posttest measures of experimental research design involving experimental (n=110) and control (n=110) groups. A total of 220 DPW were purposively recruited from public hospitals in Nigeria between October and December 2019. The DEP was delivered to DPW in experimental group. The Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Knowledge Questionnaire (GDMKQ) of 0.774 was used for data collection. The statistical analysis was completed using IBM SPSS version 22. Results: The results revealed that no statistically significant difference existed on GDM history (P=0.801>0.05), smoking habit (P=0.0615>0.05), parity status (P=0.503>0.05), and level of education (P=0.720>0.05), while difference was observed on alcohol status (P=0.011<0.05), and age by birth (P=0.009<0.05). Also, while no significant difference existed between the DPW in the treatment and control groups on GDMK pretest measures (P=0.901>0.05), difference existed between the DPW in the intervention and control groups on GDMK posttest scores (P=0.026<0.05). Also, the higher percentage score (78%) of DPW in the experimental group in the posttest GDMK measures which is higher than the score in the pretest measures (55%) of the same group were indications that DEP has significant effect on GDMK among DPW.Conclusion: This demonstrates that reliable interventions are effective in combating pregnancy-related complications. This requires collaborative efforts by concerned bodies to combat notable complications during pregnancy using reliable intervention.Trial Registration: In retrospect, the Pan African Clinical Trial Registry documented the study with registration trial code (Trial No.: PACTR201903003187005)

Abstract   Lake Sentani is located in Jayapura, Papua. Sentani people live in 26 villages along the coast and small islands around the lake. One of those islands is Yoboy Village, where a Onomi Niphi Reading House has been operating to provide library for elementary and senior high schools. The reading house is becoming center for various programs from various parties. Lake Sentani education program for students in Onomi Niphi Reading House was conducted to increase their knowledge of characteristics and fish species of Lake Sentani, as well as to develop digital education package and distributed to students in Yoboi Village and other students through social media. The program was conducted in Onomi Niphi Reading House, Jayapura at June 26 and July 3, 2021 through seminar and answer-question methods. Pretest was conducted before the class started and posttest applied after the class. Evaluation of the program was based on tests result and categorized to be distinguished, excellent, moderate, and poor. The test results showed the improvement of students’ knowledge on Lake Sentani. The documentation of the lake knowledge in digital format was distributed to the students and through social media. This will help the students to be aware of the improtance of conserving Lake Sentani.   Abstrak   Danau Sentani terletak di Kabupaten Jayapura, Papua. Danau ini ditempati oleh penduduk asli Sentani di 26 kampung yang menyebar di pulau-pulau dan tepian danau. Salah satunya adalah Kampung adat Yoboy, dimana terdapat Rumah Baca Onomi Niphi yang menyediakan perpustakaan bagi pelajar. Pembelajaran lingkungan tentang Danau Sentani diberikan kepada siswa Rumah Baca Onomi Niphi di kampung ini untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka tentang karakteristik dan jenis-jenis ikan Danau Sentani, membuat media pembelajaran digital (video) nya serta menyebar luaskannya ke pelajar di rumah baca ini dan melalui berbagai media sosial. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di Rumah Baca Onomi-Niphi, Kampung Adat Yoboy, Kabupaten Jayapura, tanggal 26 Juni dan 3 Juli 2021 dalam bentuk ceramah dan tanya jawab. Pre test diberikan sebelum pembelajaran dan post test diberikan setelah pembelajaran. Evaluasi hasil pembelajaran ditentukan berdasarkan hasil-hasil test yang dikelompokkan menjadi kategori sangat baik, baik, cukup dan kurang. Hasil pre test dan post test pada pembelajaran tentang Danau Sentani menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan anak-anak meningkat setelah pembelajaran lingkungan tentang Danau Sentani. Dokumentasi materi pembelajaran dalam bentuk digital dan penyebar luasannya diharapkan dapat mempertahankan pengetahuan anak tentang Danau Sentani.  Pengetahuan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kepedulian anak terhadap Danau Sentani.
