AbstractThe consideration of manufacturing in design is still a challenge for design engineers. This paper presents the results of an interview study, conducted with 15 participants. 4 challenges are identified in this study: Manufacturing-specific knowledge is mostly not sufficient. The design of manufacturing-oriented concepts in terms of costs is difficult. The feasibility of manufacturing is not assessed. The dimension of cost drivers is unknown, hindering optimisation in early stages of design. Based on these results the need for further research emerges regarding the impact of these challenges.

AbstractEvery year, numerous environmental disasters and emergencies occur across the globe with far-reaching impacts on human health and the environment. The ability to rapidly assess an environmental emergency to mitigate potential risks and impacts is paramount. However, collating the necessary evidence in the early stages of an emergency to conduct a robust risk assessment is a major challenge. This article presents a methodology developed to help assess the risks and impacts during the early stages of such incidents, primarily to support the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism but also the wider global community in the response to environmental emergencies. An online rapid risk and impact assessment tool has also been developed to promote enhanced collaboration between experts who are working remotely, considering the impact of a disaster on the environment and public health in the short, medium, and long terms. The methodology developed can support the appropriate selection of experts and assets to be deployed to affected regions to ensure that potential public health and environmental risks and impacts are mitigated whenever possible. This methodology will aid defensible decision making, communication, planning, and risk management, and presents a harmonized understanding of the associated impacts of an environmental emergency.

The impact of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods on the development of advanced aerospace vehicles is growing stronger year by year. Design engineers are now becoming familiar with CFD tools and are developing productive methods and techniques for their applications. This paper presents and discusses applications of CFD methods used at Grumman to design and predict the performance of propulsion system elements such as inlets and nozzles. The paper demonstrates techniques for applying various CFD codes and shows several interesting and unique results. A novel application of a supersonic Euler analysis of an inlet approach flow field, to clarify a wind tunnel-to-flight data conflict, is presented. In another example, calculations and measurements of low-speed inlet performance at angle of attack are compared. This is highlighted by employing a simplistic and low-cost computational model. More complex inlet flow phenomena at high angles of attack, calculated using an approach that combines a panel method with a Navier-Stokes (N-S) code, is also reviewed. The inlet fluid mechanics picture is rounded out by describing an N-S calculation and a comparison with test data of an offset diffuser having massively separated flow on one wall. Finally, the propulsion integration picture is completed by a discussion of the results of nozzle-afterbody calculations, using both a complete aircraft simulation in a N-S code, and a more economical calculation using an equivalent body of revolution technique.

ABSTRACTBackground:Children of patients with young onset dementia (YOD) who are confronted with a parent who has a progressive disease, often assist in caregiving tasks, which may have a great impact on their lives. The objective of the present study is to explore the experiences of children living with a young parent with dementia with a specific focus on the children's needs.Methods:Semi-structured interviews with 14 adolescent children between the ages of 15 and 27 years of patients with YOD were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Themes were identified based on the established codes.Results:The emerging categories were divided into three themes that demonstrated the impact of dementia on daily life, different ways of coping with the disease, and children's need for care and support. The children had difficulties managing all of the responsibilities and showed concerns about their future. To deal with these problems, they demonstrated various coping styles, such as avoidant or adaptive coping. Although most children were initially reluctant to seek professional care, several of them expressed the need for practical guidance to address the changing behavior of their parent. The children felt more comfortable talking to someone who was familiar with their situation and who had specific knowledge of YOD and the available services.Conclusion:In addition to practical information, more accessible and specific information about the diagnosis and the course of YOD is needed to provide a better understanding of the disease for the children. These findings underline the need for a personal, family-centered approach.

However, identification of the viral cause and epidemiological studies that supported a sound management program minimised the impact of this outbreak on animal and human health.

This article is based on interviews with fifteen children, whose parents have addiction problems. Purpose: To contribute to in-depth understanding of children's situation when parents have ceased abusing drugs or alcohol. Method: An explorative interview study with childhood sociology and symbolic interactionism as theoretical framework. Outcome: The end of the abuse gives children space to feel how they feel, to reflect on the impact of the addiction on their health and personality, and to try changing themselves and their lives. Their need for processing may last for a long time. It can take time and be difficult to build up the relationship with the parent. Children can still feel care responsibility but also distrust and worry about relapses. However, teenagers can see opportunities to move on with their own life. If the abuse ends only for one of two parents with addiction problems, children are still affected by addiction. Conclusion: Children's need for processing in relation to the parents can both be time consuming and last for a long period of time, regardless of if the child lives with the parent or not. Children may need help for their own part but also in relation to the parent. Professionals should be encouraged to work with a family perspective, regardless of organizational divisions and if parents and children live together or not. This requires structures, procedures and resources for collaboration across organizational boundaries.

Deep Web databases, whose content is presented as dynamically-generated Web pages hidden behind forms, have mostly been left unindexed by search engine crawlers. In order to automatically explore this mass of information, many current techniques assume the existence of domain knowledge, which is costly to create and maintain. In this article, we present a new perspective on form understanding and deep Web data acquisition that does not require any domain-specific knowledge. Unlike previous approaches, we do not perform the various steps in the process (e.g., form understanding, record identification, attribute labeling) independently but integrate them to achieve a more complete understanding of deep Web sources. Through information extraction techniques and using the form itself for validation, we reconcile input and output schemas in a labeled graph which is further aligned with a generic ontology. The impact of this alignment is threefold: first, the resulting semantic infrastructure associated with the form can assist Web crawlers when probing the form for content indexing; second, attributes of response pages are labeled by matching known ontology instances, and relations between attributes are uncovered; and third, we enrich the generic ontology with facts from the deep Web.

This research investigates the impact of contingency factors on the sophisticationof costing systems in Tunisia. Sophistication is analyzed by using the following criteria:ABC systems, full costing systems, the number of cost pools in the first stage of allocationand the number of cost drivers in the second stage of allocation. Data were collected through a questionnaire next to 68 companies having a costingsystem. Findings show that contingency factors affect the sophistication of costingsystems and that company’s strategy and product diversity are the most important factors.These two contingency factors are related to different dimensions of the sophistication.Moreover, big-sized companies and manufacturing companies are more likely to adoptABC. In addition, the importance of cost information positively affects the use a fullcosting system and companies with high percentages of indirect costs have a greaternumber of cost pools. This piece of research is one of the rare studies dealing with the characteristics ofcosting systems. Previous research dealt basically with ABC and are mainly conducted indeveloped countries. This study adds to knowledge since it is conducted in a developingcountry and investigates the sophistication of costing systems.

The adaptive properties of spring wheat lines with foreign genetic material at the early stages of ontogenesis on the backgrounds of salinization with sodium chloride and prolonged flooding of seeds in water were evaluated. In the course of the work, different degrees of inhibition of growth processes were revealed, depending on the factor used and the genetic characteristics of the studied forms, a comprehensive (summary) assessment of the index of stability characterizing adaptability to adverse environmental factors was shown.

Graduate students and postdocs in science, technology, engineering, and math fields are faced with a wide range of career paths to employment, but they are often not trained to effectively pursue these opportunities. The lack of career management skills implies long tenures in graduate school for many students, especially as tenure-track positions in academia dwindle. At our university, we used a cohort model in which graduate students and postdocs were encouraged to apply to the Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training program (BEST under the aegis of the National Institutes of Health) that provided opportunities to gain career management skills, engage in career exploration, and complete at least one formal internship. In this interview study of the BEST trainees, we investigated the efficacy of internships as career exploration tools and associated outcomes. Our findings show that internships were seen as effective career exploration and self-development vehicles that influenced participants’ long-term career goals. Graduate students and postdocs reported gaining transferable knowledge and skills, in addition to receiving valuable industry mentoring and networking opportunities.
