Digestibility by ponies of oat straw treated with anhydrous ammonia

ABSTRACTThe digestibility of oat straw treated with anhydrous ammonia was studied in four Shetland-type ponies in a 4×4 Latin square experiment. The experimental diets which contained soya bean oil meal, corn, sugarcane molasses, and 65% straw were: (1) straw treated with anhydrous ammonia, (2) untreated straw, (3) untreated straw plus urea, (4) untreated straw plus soya bean oil meal. Digestibility of the dry matter was 15% greater (P<0·01) and digestibility of cellulose 28% greater (P<0·01) in diets containing ammonia-treated straw than in those containing untreated straw. Ammonia treatment increased the nitrogen content of the straw by 50%, and nitrogen intake was 18% greater when the ponies were fed diet 1 than when fed diet 2. The nitrogen of the treated straw was utilized as efficiently as the nitrogen of the diet containing untreated straw supplemented with soya bean oil meal. However, the amount of nitrogen provided by the diet of ammonia-treated straw was not sufficient for nitrogen balance in the ponies. Ammonia treatment of oat straw did not affect the utilization of Ca, P, or Mg.

ABSTRACTNitrogen balance was measured in a series of experiments to determine the optimum balance between lysine, threonine and methionine plus cystine by successive additions of the free amino acids to a basal diet of barley, soya bean meal and tallow. The basal diet had a calculated digestible energy (DE) value of 14·5 MJ/kg and a crude protein content of 146 g/kg. The ranges of total lysine; threonine and methionine plus cystine tested were (g/kg) 6·6 to 11·8, 4·9 to 6·9 and 4·3 to 71, respectively. Latin-square designs were used involving a total of 33 pigs. Nitrogen utilization was optimized in pigs of 3 to 9 weeks of age when each kg of diet contained 10·5 g lysine, 6·4 g threonine and 5·0 g methionine plus cystine, corresponding to a ratio of 100: 61: 48. Thereafter, five diets were formulated in which the same ratio was maintained, but at different protein levels (129 to 192 g/kg). Again the diets were based on barley, soya bean meal and tallow supplemented with free amino acids. These diets were compared, in both nitrogen balance and performance experiments, with a conventional early-weaning diet with a protein content of 240 g/kg. All six diets had the same calculated DE value (14·5 MJ/kg). The N balance experiment was of Latin-square design and involved 18 pigs, and the performance experiment used 36 pigs fed individually from 3 to 9 weeks of age. A diet containing 0·99 g lysine per MJ DE (14·4 g lysine and 192 g balanced protein per kg) was considered to be adequate on the basis of the growth rate and food conversion efficiency results obtained.

SUMMARYPublished and unpublished results for apparent nitrogen digestibility from 107 digestibility trials with Zebu (Africander, Brahman and their crosses with British cattle) and British breeds of cattle were analysed by regression analyses to determine its relationship with dry matter intake and dietary nitrogen content.The linear regression of apparent nitrogen digestibility on the reciprocal of dietary nitrogen content was an adequate mathematical description of the relation (r = 0·92) and the addition of the reciprocal of nitrogen intake as an independent variable improved the description (r = 0·95) particularly for diets with a low nitrogen content. Both these equations have a physiological basis.Estimates of the true nitrogen digestibility and metabolic faecal nitrogen from the linear regression of apparent nitrogen digestibility on the reciprocal of dietary nitrogen content were 86·8% and 0·49 g/100 g dry-matter intake. Independent estimates of these parameters from a multiple regression of total faecal nitrogen on dry-matter intake and nitrogen intake were 88·7% and 0·46 g/100 g dry-matter intake. The analyses on the breeds suggested that the Zebu cattle may have a higher true digestibility and a lower metabolic faecal nitrogen than the British cattle, although the differences were small and could not be subjected to statistical tests.

Four Red Sokoto bucks of averageweight 17. 40±2kg were fed sugarcane scrappingmeal in a complete diet to evaluate the nutrients intake, digestibility and nitrogen balance. In a 4×4 Latin Square Design four dietary treatments containing sugarcane scrapping at 0, 10, 20, and 30% levels of inclusion supplementing wheat offal in a complete diet were used The proximate composition of the sugarcane scrapping showed that the scrapping had, 10.01, 2.98%and 3114 Kcal/Kg of CF, CP andME respectively. The results of the trial showed that significant high dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility of some and the nitrogen balance values were recorded in the bucks fed 30%. It was concluded that DM intake, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen utilization of bucks can be enhanced by including 30% of sugar cane scrapping in their diets.

A factorial field experiment, comparing three rates of nitrogen as anhydrous ammonia, two seeding rates of oats, and the presence or absence of a herbicide applied to grass pastures before sod-seeding, was conducted at Kyogle, New South Wales in 1964. Plots were sown in mid-autumn and harvested in winter and early spring. Increased applications of nitrogen and the higher seeding rate increased both dry matter yield and total nitrogen content. Application of herbicide significantly increased yield at the low rates of nitrogen but not at the highest rate. Anhydrous ammonia at 120 lb of nitrogen an acre had no effect on the germination of oats seed and provided adequate nitrogen for growth of oats without the need for herbicide application or cultivation of the grass pasture. The results suggest that oats can be successfully sod-seeded into grass dominant pastures by using 120 lb of nitrogen as anhydrous ammonia and four bushels of oats an acre.

ABSTRACTIn experiment 1, nine Hereford × Friesian steers weighing 325 kg were used in a changeover design and offered long barley straw that had been treated with 30 g anhydrous ammonia per kg for 8 weeks, a solution providing 25 g urea per kg straw dry matter or a solution providing 23 g urea and 3 g ammonium sulphate per kg straw dry matter. In addition they were offered 3 kg/day of mineralized rolled barley. In experiment 2, 30 Hereford × Friesian steers weighing 380 kg were used in a continuous growth trial of 10 weeks duration. They were allocated to one of the following barley straw treatments, straw that had been exposed to 30 g anhydrous ammonia per kg for 4 weeks, untreated straw with a urea supplement in the barley or untreated straw. The straw was fed ad libitum with either 2·8 or 4·4 kg rolled barley daily.The barley straw contained 43 and 27 g crude protein per kg dry matter in experiment 1 and 2 respectively. In both experiments, ammonia treatment increased the crude protein content of the straw and resulted in improved straw intakes and higher live-weight gains. The results of experiment 2 cast doubt on the practice of providing supplementary nitrogen with food based on long barley straw and barley when steers weighing about 400 kg are used.

AbstractA study was conducted to compare the effects of ammoniation and protein supplementation of barley straw on rumination behaviour of sheep. Four wethers were allocated to four diets offered ad libitum in a 4 × 4 Latin-square design. The diets were, untreated barley straw + molasses meal (diet 1), untreated barley straw + soya-bean meal + molasses meal (diet 2), ammonia-treated barley straw + molasses meal (diet 3) and ammonia-treated barley straw + soya-bean meal + molasses meal (diet 4). Animals were kept in metabolism crates throughout each 16-day experimental period and allowed free access to water and a mineralized salt lick. The first 11 days of each period were for adaptation to the harnesses and diets while the last 5 days were used for rumination studies. Animals given diets 3 and 4 had slower eating rates compared with those given diets 1 and 2. Rumination index and duration of each rumination period was lower for sheep consuming diets 3 and 4 than for those on diets 1 and 2 but not significantly so (P > 0·05). Rumination time per 100 g neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) intake was significantly lower (P < 0·01) for diets containing ammoniated straw. Animals given ammoniated straw diets also regurgitated fewer boluses per unit NDF intake than did those on untreated straw diets. The results showed that increased intake and digestibility, which is usually associated with ammoniated straws, was due to sheep doing less work per unit of time to break down straw for digestion. In this way, potentially digestible tissues within a given amount of straw is more readily exposed. The foregoing suggests that ammonia treatment results in less rumination so that ruminants given ammonia-treated straw diets do less work ruminating.

AbstractThe objective was to elucidate the influences of two analytical methods, which employed neutral detergent or enzymes, on the digestion of carbohydrate fractions in the rumen and post-rumen of steers. Structural carbohydrates in diets and digesta were directly measured using both procedures and the contents of non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC) and non-fibre non-starch polysaccharides (NFSP) were estimated by subtracting the structural carbohydrates and other components from the organic matter. Carbohydrate sources were Italian ryegrass and rolled barley in the control diet and, in each of other three diets, Italian ryegrass and rolled barley plus either beet pulp, citrus pulp or soya-bean hulls. All diets contained similar proportions of dry matter as crude protein, structural carbohydrates and NFC but the starch proportion of the NFC was different in each diet, as follows: control (0·62), beet pulp (0·48), citrus pulp (0·30) and soya-bean hulls (0·63). Four Holstein steers with ruminal, duodenal and Heal cannulas were offered the four diets in a 4 × 4 Latin-square design. Estimated digestibilities of the structural carbohydrates in the rumen and the whole tract were greater (P < 0·01) when the detergent method was used than when the enzymatic method was used. The maximal difference in the ruminal digestion among the four diets was only 0·05 by the detergent method but 0·17 by the enzymatic method. Conversely, the digestibility of NFC in the rumen, as estimated from the detergent structural carbohydrates was less (P < 0.01) than that estimated from enzymatic structural carbohydrates with no evident differences among the four diets. Starch digestibility in the rumen was extensive for all diets but the ruminal digestibility of NFSP was much lower in the control and soya-bean hull diets, especially when it was estimated using the detergent method. The duodenal flow of microbial protein was greater (P < 0·05) for the beet pulp and citrus pulp diets than for the control. The acetate concentration of the ruminal fluids ranged from 84 for the control diet to 128 mmol/l for the soya-bean hulls diet. The digestion of carbohydrate fractions and the fermentation characteristics in the rumen suggested that the enzymatic method is the more appropriate method for fractionating carbohydrates.

1. Four sheep were given four diets containing proportions of rolled barley and soya-bean meal varied to provide 10.3, 13.3, 16.1 and 19.9% crude protein in the dietary dry matter; the treatments were given according to a 4 x 4 Latin square design. The mean daily intake was 989 g dry matter. The apparent disappearance of protein, ash, ether extractives and carbohydrate before the abomasum, between the abomasum and terminal ileum and between the terminal ileum and rectum was measured.2. The amount of non-ammonia crude protein (Y1, g/d) disappearing from the small intestine increased with protein intake (X, g/d) according to the equation Y1 = 2.12X – 0.0057X2–83, reaching a maximum when there was about 19% crude protein in the dry matter of the diet.3. The treatments had no significant effects on the disappearance of starch, ether extractives or ash. About 93% of starch disappeared in the rumen and 6% in the small intestine. The total mean daily intake of ether extractives was 21 g; 9 g were added in the rumen, 24 g disappeared from the small intestine and 6 g were excreted in the faeces. The total mean daily intake of ash was 67 g; 26 g were added in the rumen, 37 g disappeared from the small intestine, 9 g from the large intestine and 47 g were excreted in the faeces.

Corn stover stacks were harvested and a portion of these were treated with anhydrous ammonia at a level of 3% of dry matter (DM) and left covered with plastic for at least 30 days during the fall of 1977. In the spring, both treated and untreated corn were chopped through a forage harvester. A portion of each was then ground through a 1.3-cm screen. Treatments were: untreated chopped, untreated ground, ammoniated chopped, ammoniated ground. Treatments were evaluated with eight Hereford-Angus yearling steers in a double 4 × 4 latin square design. In addition to the stover, rations contained 10% molasses, 6% soybean meal, and 2.3% mineral mix. Urea was added to the untreated rations at the level of 1.6% to make rations isonitrogenous. Steers were injected with vitamins A, D and E at 90-day intervals. With both control and ammoniated rations, grinding increased (P < 0.001) intake on a body weight raised to the 0.75 power basis (MBW) of DM, digestible energy (DE) and digestible DM by 47%, 39%) and 39%), respectively. With both chopped and ground stover rations, ammoniation increased (P < 0.001) intake of digestible DM and DE and increased (P < 0.01) intake of DM all on a MBW basis by 22%, 31% and 12%), respectively. However, grinding decreased digestibilities of DM and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (P < 0.001) and of organic matter (OM) (P < 0.01) by 5%, 10% and 5%, respectively. With both chopped and ground stover rations, ammoniation increased (P < 0.001) digestibility of DM, OM, and NDF by 9%, 9% and 14%, respectively. Ammoniation plus grinding increased (P < 0.01) intake (MBW) of DM, digestible DM and DE by 64%), 71% and 85%), respectively, over untreated chopped rations. Grinding increased (P < 0.01) rumen acetate 0.5 h preprandially but did not significantly affect other rumen parameters measured preprandially or 2 h postprandially. Ammoniation increased (P < 0.01) rumen propionate 0.5 h preprandially but did not significantly affect the remaining rumen parameters. Before versus after feeding levels of rumen metabolites did not differ except for an increase (P < 0.01) in ammonia-N and total VFA postprandially. No significant treatment interactions were present.

ABSTRACTThirty-two Friesian cows in early lactation were given one of tour completely mixed diets based on equal proportions of barley straw and concentrate. Two varieties of barley straws had been identified as varying in degradation characteristics (Corgi and Gerbel) and the straws were either given untreated or treated with anhydrous ammonia. The ad libitum intake for 10 weeks closely reflected degradation characteristics. For Corgi, treated and untreated and Gerbel, treated and untreated the 48·h degradabilities were 71·9, 66·8, 61·9 and 52·2 (g/100 g) respectively. The voluntary intakes of dry matter were 17·1, 14·8, 15·0 and 13·1 (s.e. 0·51) kg/day and average yields of fat-corrected milk for 10 weeks were 26·7, 21·5, 22·6 and 22·4 (s.e. 1·0) kg/day respectively.It was calculated that the differences between actual digestibility and potential degradability were greatest for ammonia-treated straws. Also it was observed that the degradability of faecal dry matter was greater from animals given ammonia-treated straws.
