Responses to supplements by weaned lambs when grazing mature pasture or eating hay cut from the same pasture

SummaryWeaned cross-bred lambs either grazed mature pasture or were confined to yards where they were offered material cut from ungrazed areas of the same pasture. A 1:2 mixture (on an air-dry basis) of sunflower meal and oat grain was offered for 81 days at 0, 200, 400 or 600 g/head or ad libitum. Individual estimates of intake of pasture and supplement by grazing sheep at four levels of supplementation were made on four adjacent plots.Weight gain increased from –30 to 178 g/day in the grazing animals as supplement intake increased up to 1030 g D.M./day and from –25 to 142 g/day in the yarded animals as supplement intake increased to 1076 g D.M./day. Growth of greasy wool increased from 4·5 to 11·7 g/day for grazing animals and from 4·5 to 10·2 g/day for those kept in yards.At levels of supplement intake below 400 g D.M./day, the intake of grazed pasture increased by up to 58% compared with unsupplemented animals. However, when the intake of supplement was increased to about 650 g D.M./day, pasture intake fell, with an estimated substitution rate of 1·1 g D.M. pasture per g D.M. supplement. At all levels of supplementation, the intake of hay by the yarded lambs was less than half the intake of herbage in the field. However, at levels of supplement intake between 300 and 500 g D.M./day, the substitution rate was similar to that measured in the grazing animals, suggesting that this is an attribute of roughage quality, rather than differential eating behaviour between grazing and yarded animals.The wastage, w (g D.M./day), of supplement was linearly related to the amount offered, s (g D.M./day), by the equationw = 0·263s − 38·8; R2 = 0·89Variability in supplement intake between individual grazing lambs was not affected by the level of supplementation but the coefficient of variation of supplement intake was considerably greater than that of the intake of unsupplemented pasture. Variability in the intake of pasture increased with the level of supplementation but variability in the total intake of food was similar at each level of supplement, indicating some degree of individual compensation in the intake of the two components.

Weaned crossbred lambs grazing mature pasture in summer at stocking rates of 14, 28 or 42 lambs/ha were supplemented for 60 days with 0, 400, 600 or 800 g/day of either sunflower meal or a 1:1 mixture of sunflower meal and oats. Mean daily gains in fasted weight without and with supplement were - 51 and 62 g, respectively, with no significant difference between the three feeding levels. Greasy wool production increased from 4.7 g/day without supplement to 9.9 g/day at the 600 or 800 g level but the composition of the supplement had no effect. Stocking rate had no effect on animal performance. It was estimated that pasture intake increased slightly with the first 400 g of supplement but fell sharply as the level increased further, with a substitution rate of 1.3. In two experiments, yarded lambs were offered oaten or lucerne hay ad libitum and mixtures of sunflower meal and oats at levels from 400 g/day to ad libitum. Mean daily gain in fasted weight increased from about 140 to about 190 g/day over this range of supplementation and greasy wool production from about 9 to about 10 g/day. In one experiment weight gain and wool production were significantly lower with a 1:6 mixture of sunflower meal and oats than with a 1:2 mixture and the same trend was shown in the other experiment. Measurements of intake showed that the substitution rate for both types of hay was only about 0.5. Comparisons of the animals' estimated requirements and intake in all three experiments indicated that the relatively poor performance of grazing animals was due to the very high substitution rate for grazed pasture at levels of supplement intake above 400 g/day.

Crossbred lambs [Poll Dorset x (Border Leicester x Merino)] were offered pasture hay (12% crude protein, 55.3% dry matter digestibility) ad libitum and supplemented with four levels of cereal (oats) or legume (peas) grains; 0, 250, or 500 g/head.d, or ad libitum in individual pens or in groups of 30 (feedlot). Increasing the level of supplementation of peas of the individually fed lambs from 0 to ad libitum increased total dry matter intake from 22 1 to 1041 g/head.d (P< 0.01), liveweight gain from - 70 to 263 g/d and wool growth from 13.1 to 38.3 mg clean wool/cm2. The corresponding results for oats were: total intake from 22 1 to 3 15 g/head.d (P> 0.05), liveweight gain from -70 to 52 g/d (P < 0.01) and wool growth from 13.1 to 15.2 mg clean wool/cm2 (P> 0.05). The intake of hay by the lambs supplemented with peas was not depressed until the peas were offered ad libitum but there was a significant decrease in the intake of hay (P< 0.01) at the lowest level of supplementation of oats. A similar pattern of response for total intake, intake of hay and liveweight gain was observed with the feedlot lambs.

ABSTRACTHigh (1·31 kg/1) or medium-density (1·17 kg/1) dried grass pellets of 9, 12 or 18 mm diameter were given to British Friesian male calves of 7 to 14 weeks of age as supplements to chopped hay (Experiment 1). Pellets were given ad libitum but with access limited to two periods of 1½ h per day, and hay was given ad libitum for the remaining 21 h. In Experiment 2, high (1·34 kg/1) or medium-density (1·14 kg/1) dried grass pellets of 18 mm diameter were given to British Friesian male calves of 26 to 30 weeks of age. Pellets were given as supplements to chopped hay as in Experiment 1.There was no effect of pellet size or density on total intake of organic matter or live-weight gain by calves in either experiment. With the exception of animals given pellets of 12 mm diameter in Experiment 1, animals in both experiments consumed less pellets of high density than of medium density, but they were able to compensate for low pellet intake by eating more hay.The coefficients of variation for intake were higher in Experiment 1 than in Experiment 2, and higher for the intake of pellets than for total intake. There was a progressive increase in the intake (g organic matter/kg M0·75 per day) by calves in Experiment 1, whereas in Experiment 2 intake increased for the first 10 days and then remained constant. On average the proportion of pellets and hay consumed did not change in Experiment 1, but in Experiment 2 the proportion of pellets in the feed consumed increased from 53·5 to 60·6%.

Thirty crossbred two-year-old steers, kept on pasture of Braquiaria decumbens, were used in two different experiments of 90 days each. In the first experiment, the steers were randomly assigned in five groups of six steers each to verify the influence of different percentages of sodium chloride (SC) in mineral mix (MM) containing essential macro and microelements (A - 100% SC; B - 80% SC/20% MM; C - 60% SC/40% MM; D - 40% SC/ 60 MM and E - 20% SCl/80 MM) on the consumption of the mineral supplement and the weight gain. In the second experiment, the same steers were reassigned to three groups of 10 animals each to study the effect of mineral salt (40% SC/60% MM) offered loose, partially blocked or as a hard block on the mineral consumption and weight gain. Steers fed supplement D had the highest intake followed by groups B and C; lowest intake was verified in group E. All mineral supplements but E were fed adequately to meet the Na requirement (6.3g/head/d) for a 350kg growing steer. Higher average daily gain was verified in steers of groups D and C than those of group E. The highest mineral intake was observed in steers fed loose mineral (60g/head/d) followed by partially block (45g/d); the lowest consumption occurred in the steers fed hard block mineral (27g/d). The coefficient of variation of supplement intake increased as mineral hardness increased. The higher the mineral intake, in the second experiment, the greater the average daily gain. Grazing steers should be offered mineral supplements with 40% and 60% of NaCl changed weekly in order to avoid the hardening of its contents.

Were used 724 quails, with initial weight of 105.05±1.40g to determine the model requirements for European quails 16-36 days old. Were used 384 quails for the maintenance requirement experiment and 240 for the gain requirement experiment and the remaining 100 quails composed the birds of the comparative slaughter. Maintenance requirement: the treatments consisted of four levels of feed offerings (100, 75, 50 and 25% of consumption ad libitum) with four pens and four quails per pen for each climatic environment (18, 24 and 28ºC), being 192 quails for each nutrient under study. Gain requirement: the requirements of the studied nutrients for gain were determined from 240 quails, created and fed ad libitum, being 120 quails for each nutrient studied, that is, 30 quails were slaughtered at 21, 26, 31 and 36 days of age. The quails of the reference slaughter comprise the same as the experiment for determining the maintenance requirement. In conclusion. The prediction equations for estimating the requirements were: 1) Pr (mg/quail/day) = (27.029 + 1.5943 × T) × kg0.75 + 12.24 × WG, in which Pr is the phosphorus requirement, kg0.75 is metabolic weight (kg), WG is weight gain (g/quail/day). 2) Ca (mg/quail/day) = (158.93 - 5.187 × T) × kg0.75 + 23.66 × WG, in which Ca is the calcium requirement, kg0.75 is metabolic weight (kg), WG is weight gain (g/quail/day), T is temperature.

In southern Australia, winter-born calves may not be at marketable weights until 18 months of age and can thus compete with their dams and the next crop of calves for the pasture resource. We investigated supplementary feeding options to improve calf liveweight gains and overcome this problem. Weaned beef calves confined to feedlots for 70 days were fed different ratios (1 : 1 up to 1 : 4) of sunflower meal to oat grain (Experiment 1) or barley grain (Experiment 2) at levels of 3–6 kg air-dry/day, plus either oaten hay (Expt. 1) or pasture hay (Expt. 2) fed ad libitum. Liveweight gains at 3 kg supplement/day were ~1.2 kg/day at all ratios and were slightly higher at the higher feeding levels. The intake of hay varied inversely with the amount of supplement fed and substitution rates were 0.49 with oaten hay and 0.47 with pasture hay. Total DM intakes did not decline in Experiment 1 as supplement intake increased and increased in Experiment 2 with increasing supplement intake. A separate group of calves that had been grazing mature pasture while their cohorts were in the feedlot showed good compensatory growth when transferred to good pasture, whereas calves coming out of the feedlot onto the same pasture initially lost weight before regaining weight. This suggests that such feedlot-reared calves should be sold direct from the feedlot. In a third experiment, over 2 years, weaned calves grazed mature summer pasture for 81 days and were fed 0, 1, 2, 3 or 5 kg/day of a 1 : 2 ratio of sunflower meal : hammer-milled oat grain. Weight gains were less than in Experiments 1 and 2 and responses of gain to supplement intake were curvilinear. Gains did not exceed 0.75 kg/day and peaked at supplement intakes of 4.3 and 2.8 kg DM/day in years 1 and 2, respectively. Liveweight gains/kg supplement consumed were similar to those in previous studies. A preliminary assessment of supplement costs and the economic value of liveweight gain showed a curvilinear response to supplement intake and suggested that the greatest economic return resulted from an intake of 1.9–2.4 kg/day of the supplement, lower than the supplement intakes for maximum liveweight gain.

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of phytase on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of phosphorus (P) in gestating and lactating sows. In Exp. 1, a total of 40 sows (parity 2–6) at d 78 of gestation were randomly assigned, based on parity, over 4 experimental diets. In Exp. 2, 40 sows (parity 2.0–6.0) at d 4 of lactation were randomly assigned based on parity, over 4 experimental diets. Both studies had a positive control (PC) diet with adequate levels of calcium (Ca) and digestible P (6.5 and 2.5 g/kg and 7.0 and 3.2 g/kg for gestation and lactation diets, respectively), a negative control (NC) diet with low Ca and digestible P levels (5.0 and 1.0 g/kg and 5.0 and 1.5 g/kg for gestation and lactation diets, respectively), and NC supplemented with a novel consensus bacterial 6-phytase variant (PhyG) or a commercial Buttiauxella sp. phytase (PhyB), both at 500 FTU/kg. Diets were corn, soybean meal and sunflower meal based (phytate P of 3.0 g/kg) with restricted feeding during gestation and ad libitum during lactation. In both studies, fecal samples were collected after an adaptation of 14 d on 4 successive days to determine ATTD of P. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, treatment mean comparison using Tukey test using JMP 14. In addition, data from the Exp. 1 and 2 were pooled to further investigate their combined effect, using trial as random effect. In both studies, supplementation of both phytases improved (P &lt; 0.05) ATTD of P vs NC. With data combined from two trials, sows fed PhyG showed greater (P &lt; 0.05) ATTD of P when compared those fed PhyB. In conclusion, PhyG at 500 FTU/kg showed a greater ATTD of P in sows when compared to the PhyB at 500 FTU/kg, when data combined from two trials.

A previously described 3-day 59Fe assay for quantitation of Friend spleen focus-forming virus has been modified to produce a 200-fold more sensitive 9-day 59Fe assay. A characterization of this assay is reported here. Male BALB/c mice received intravenous injections of appropriately diluted Friend polycythemia virus (FVP); control mice received virus diluent. All mice were allowed food and water ad libitum for 6 days, and on day 6 after virus injection were fasted by removal of food but not water. On day 3 of the fast (the 9th day after virus injection) each mouse received an intraperitoneal injection of 1 muCi of 59Fe. Six hours later the mice were sacrificed and the splenic radioactivity was determined. The percent splenic incorporation of 59Fe was directly related to the logarithm of spleen focus-forming units (SFFU) of FVP injected in a range of approximately 25 to 1,000 SFFU. Using a standard FVP preparation in a dose range of 25 to 1,000 SFFU, it was possible to determine the SFFU titers of unknown samples by extrapolation of the percent splenic 59Fe incorporation to the logarithm of SFFU. SFFU titers obtained by the 9-day 59Fe assay were similar to those obtained by the enumerative-response assay. Advantages of the 9-day 59Fe assay over the enumerative-response assay include a 50-fold greater virus dose range, an easier and a more objective counting procedure, and a reduced coefficient of variation.

ObjectiveCirculating albumin is negatively associated with adiposity but whether it is associated with increased energy intake, lower energy expenditure or weight gain has not been examined.MethodsIn study 1 (n=238; 146 men), we evaluated whether fasting albumin concentration was associated with 24-h energy expenditure and ad libitum energy intake. In study 2 (n=325;167 men), we evaluated the association between plasma albumin and change in weight and body composition.ResultsAfter adjustment for known determinants of energy intake lower plasma albumin concentration was associated with greater total daily energy intake (β= 89.8 kcal/day per 0.1 g/dl difference in plasma albumin, p=0.0047). No associations were observed between plasma albumin concentrations and 24-h energy expenditure or 24-h respiratory quotient (p&gt;0.2). Over 6 years, volunteers gained on average 7.5 ± 11.7 kg (p&lt;0.0001). Lower albumin concentrations were associated with greater weight [β=3.53 kg, p=0.039 (adjusted for age, sex, follow up time), CI 0.16 to 6.21 per 1 g/dl difference albumin concentration] and fat mass (β=2.3 kg, p=0.022), respectively, but not with changes in fat free mass (p=0.06).ConclusionsLower albumin concentrations were associated with increased ad libitum food intake and weight gain, indicating albumin as a marker of energy intake regulation.Clinical Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov, identifiers NCT00340132, NCT00342732.

SUMMARYMilled barley straw, either untreated or treated with 70 g of NaOH/kg straw was supplemented with four levels of urea, namely 0, 6, 12 or 18 g/kg and fed ad libitum to young sheep. For the untreated straw, dry-matter intakes were (g/day) 423, 451, 441 and 463, while the digestibility of organic matter was 458, 467, 490 and 483 g/kg, respectively. For the treated straw, the intakes of dry matter were 355, 402, 531 and 567 g/day and the digestibility of organic matter was 423, 480, 589 and 628 g/kg respectively.The different responses to urea supplementation of treated and untreated straw are discussed in relation to a new system of estimating protein requirements for ruminants put forward by the Agricultural Research Council.
