AbstractDuring an observation campaign in winter 94/95 astrometric positions from Meteosat 4 and 5 were acquired at the Zimmerwald observatory using a CCD camera mounted in the prime focus of the 0.5 m Satellite Laser Ranging telescope. The measurements cover a time interval of four months, their precision is of the order of .The modeling of radiation pressure for the small, cylindrically shaped satellites is relatively easy and they are therefore excellent objects to probe the geopotential. The orbital parameters and the radiation pressure coefficients for the two satellites as well as the resonant coefficients C22, S22 of the geopotential were determined by a single least square adjustment procedure including all the Zimmerwald observations. The relative errors estimated for the terms C22 and S22 are of the order of 1 ÷ 3 · 10−4.

We discuss first the valid time interval of a formula found in the literature which gives the theoretical distance run by a liquid which rises along a capillary tube as a function of time. A non-linear least square fitting of experimental data to this theoretical curve allows the measurement of the kinematic viscosity of the liquid. The goodness of the fitting for three different sets of experimental data given in the literature is above 99%.

Electron diffraction intensities can be obtained at large scattering angles (sinθ/λ ≥ 2.0), and thus structure information can be collected in regions of reciprocal space that are not accessable with other diffraction methods. LACBED intensities in this range can be utilized for determination of accurate temperature factors or for refinement of coordinates. Such high index reflections can usually be treated kinematically or as a pertubed two-beam case. Application to Y Ba2Cu3O7 shows that a least square refinememt based on integrated intensities can determine temperature factors or coordinates.LACBED patterns taken in the (00l) systematic row show an easily recognisable pattern of narrow bands from reflections in the range 15 < l < 40 (figure 1). Integrated intensities obtained from measured intensity profiles after subtraction of inelastic background (figure 2) were used in the least square fit for determination of temperature factors and refinement of z-coordinates for the Ba- and Cu-atoms.

A bio-monitoring system for toxicants in water has been developed and verified for actual applications. This system is based on the motionality of five Acheilognathus lanceolata, a fish known to be very sensitive to toxic substances, moving around in an aquarium. Their movements are continuously monitored with a charge coupled device (CCD) camera and analyzed to find and quantify any abnormal behavior in their motional characteristics in comparison with the pre-acquired data. That is, the images of fish captured by a CCD camera are digitalized to identify the location of fish in a constant time interval and the locations of each fish were then analyzed mathematically with a personal computer using the equations proposed to determine the motional characteristics such as floatness, fledness and mobility(agility). These data are then converted by means of fuzzy estimation to an index value, defined as the contamination index (CI), by which the system provides the information about the overall toxic strength of the toxicant in the water flowing into the aquarium. If the fish are exposed to toxicant(s), the CI value will be proportional to the strength of its toxicity. The pilot test was performed in a water treatment plant for six months in order to verify the reproducibility of the system over the unstable conditions such as highly turbid water after rainfall as well as in normal conditions. The test results revealed that this monitoring system has good reproducibility and sensitivity, proving our approach, described in this paper, is reliable. As a result, this approach seems to enable us to make a quick and easy detection of toxic substances contained in water, therefore, this system can be applied to a source of water supply as a toxicant watching system.

: Quantitative determination of pyridostigmine bromide in the presence of its two related substances; impurity A and impurity B was considered as a case study to construct the comparison. Introduction: Novel manipulations of the well-known classical least squares multivariate calibration model were explained in detail as a comparative analytical study in this research work. In addition to the application of plain classical least squares model, two preprocessing steps were tried, where prior to modeling with classical least squares, first derivatization and orthogonal projection to latent structures were applied to produce two novel manipulations of the classical least square-based model. Moreover, spectral residual augmented classical least squares model is included in the present comparative study. Methods: 3 factor 4 level design was implemented constructing a training set of 16 mixtures with different concentrations of the studied components. To investigate the predictive ability of the studied models; a test set consisting of 9 mixtures was constructed. Results: The key performance indicator of this comparative study was the root mean square error of prediction for the independent test set mixtures, where it was found 1.367 when classical least squares applied with no preprocessing method, 1.352 when first derivative data was implemented, 0.2100 when orthogonal projection to latent structures preprocessing method was applied and 0.2747 when spectral residual augmented classical least squares was performed. Conclusion: Coupling of classical least squares model with orthogonal projection to latent structures preprocessing method produced significant improvement of the predictive ability of it.

About 10 X-ray binaries in our Galaxy and LMC/SMC are considered to contain black hole candidates (BHCs). Among these objects, Cyg X-1 was identified as the first BHC, and it has led BHCs for more than 25 years(Oda 1977, Liang and Nolan 1984). It is a binary system composed of normal blue supergiant star and the X-ray emitting compact object. The orbital kinematics derived from optical observations indicates that the compact object is heavier than ~ 4.8 M⊙ (Herrero 1995), which well exceeds the upper limit mass for a neutron star(Kalogora 1996), where we assume the system consists of only two bodies. This has been the basis for BHC of Cyg X-1.

PSR B1259-63 is a 47-millisecond pulsar which was discovered in a high frequency survey of the galactic plane (Johnston et al. 1992a) and was subsequently found to be in a highly eccentric orbit with a main-sequence Be star known as SS 2883 (Johnston et al. 1992b). Radio observations of the pulsar led to a phase connected timing solution which predicted the epoch of periastron to be 1994 January 9 (MJD 49361.2); optical observations of the Be star led to a determination of its mass and of the size of its circumstellar disk (Johnston et al. 1994a): the star is of approximate spectral type B1e, with mass 10 M⊙ and radius 6 R⊙. If this mass is correct and the pulsar has a mass of 1.4 M⊙, then the inclination angle of the plane of the orbit with respect to the sky is 35°. This pulsar has an unusually flat radio spectrum compared to most pulsars, which makes it easily detectable up to 8.4 GHz. The narrow pulse permits dispersion and scattering measurements for studying the ionized plasma in the system. Moreover, the pulses are highly linearly polarized and permit determination of the rotation measure (RM), allowing measurements of the magnetic field along the line of sight. The 3.5-yr orbit of the pulsar around its companion thus provides us with an excellent probe of the stellar wind of the Be star over a wide frequency range.

abstract In this paper a numerical approach to the determination of focal mechanisms based on the observation of the polarization of the S wave at N stations is presented. Least-square methods are developed for the determination of the orientation of the single and double couple sources. The methods allow a statistical evaluation of the data and of the accuracy of the solutions.

Objective: This work is focused on the construction of simple and sensitive electrochemical sensor for quantitative determination of dorzolamide (DOR) and timolol maleate (TIM). This method is based on the incorporation of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) into the carbon paste electrode which improve the characteristics of the electrode.Methods: The electrochemical response of modified electrode was based on voltammetric oxidation, using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The structural morphology of the surface modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Quantitative analysis for each of the two compounds in a mixture has been examined by using of chemometric tools for resolving overlapping signals. The prediction performance of the chemometric method was analyzed by principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square (PLS).Results: Fractional factorial design was constructed from set of synthetic mixtures of two drugs in concentration ranges of 0.05 to 1.6µg/ml for DOR and 1.5-20 µg/ml for TIM. Under optimum experimental conditions, DOR and TIM gave rectilinear response over the concentration range of 0.072-1.88 µg/ml and 1.16-20.84 µg/ml, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.098 and 1.025 µg/ml, for DOR and TIM, respectively. It found that the % of relative prediction error (RPE) was acceptable and satisfactory.Conclusion: In these work, for the first time, a new voltammetric simultaneous method developed for a rapid and efficient determination of DOR and TIM from eye dropper sample at nano modified electrode with satisfactory results. These results indicate that MWCNT holds great promise in practical application.

Abstract A validated HPLC-UV method is presented for the quantification of urinary memantine hydrochloride, a novel medication approved to treat moderate and advanced cases of Alzheimer's disease. The drug and amantadine hydrochloride, the internal standard, were extracted from human urine using SPE. The extract was then buffered and derivatized at room temperature using o-phthalaldehyde in the presence of N-acetyl-L-cyteine. Chromatographic separation of the formed derivatives was achieved on a C18 column using methanol–water mobile phase adjusted to pH 7 and pumped isocratically at 1 mL/min. The UV detector was set at 340 nm. The chromatographic run time did not exceed 10 min. The LOD and LOQ were 8 and 20 ng/mL, respectively. The RSDs for intraday and interday precisions did not exceed 5.5%. The method was used to monitor memantine hydrochloride in human urine in order to determine an appropriate sampling interval for future noninvasive therapeutic drug monitoring. The assay could also be applied to the determination of amantadine. The described assay showed that a postdosing time interval of 25–75 h seems adequate for sampling and monitoring memantine in urine.
