Factors Affecting Navigation of the S.S.T.

This note provides some qualitative impressions of the need for precise navigation in the S.S.T. operation having due regard to performance and noise. It highlights the increased signific ance of the vertical plane, but quantitative conclusions as to horizontal ability cannot be made in the absence of knowledge of traffic amounts. It suggests that any tactical ‘chasing’ of noise reduction through performance variations not planned before flight is impracticable.In common with other aircraft types, the S.S.T. has three distinct phases of flight apart from take-off and landing: climb to cruise altitude, cruise and descent. The S.S.T. climb is characterized by an acceleration phase dividing the subsonic portion of flight from the supersonic. Similarly, the descent profile includes a deceleration phase which restores flight to the subsonic region. Contained in these three phases of flight unique to the S.S.T.—acceleration, supersonic flight and deceleration—are some of the special factors affecting aircraft navigation.

The doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) uses the rotor’s kinetic energy to provide inertial response for the power system. On this basis, this paper proposes an improved torque limit control (ITLC) strategy for the purpose of exploiting the potential of DFIGs’ inertial response. It includes the deceleration phase and acceleration phase. To shorten the recovery time of the rotor speed and avoid the second frequency drop (SFD), a small-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is utilized by the wind-storage combined control strategy. During the acceleration phase of DFIG, the BESS adaptively adjusts its output according to its state of charge (SOC) and the real-time output of the DFIG. The simulation results prove that the system frequency response can be significantly improved through ITLC and the wind-storage combined control under different wind speeds and different wind power penetration rates.

The attempt is made in this study to identify students’ motives and reasons behind enrolling in a MBA program offered by universities operating in Kuwait. It also explores criterion used to select the program. To achieve these objectives, data were collected through a well-designed and structured questionnaire and pre-testing was carried out to examine the efficiency of the instrument. The study showed that the main reasons behind selecting the MBA program by students are to satisfy their personal concerns and improve their knowledge and skills. Moreover, the students used program alumni and campus visit as main sources of information followed by friends’ suggestions and university websites. When evaluating the MBA programs, the students cited overseas accreditation as the most used criteria followed by faculty reputation, institution reputation and admission requirements.

The paper presents an inclination transducer with magnetic fluid, being dedicated to measure little inclination angles in comparison with a horizontal or a vertical plane. The functioning principle is submitted. The results of theory analysis show that output voltage of sensor and inclination angles are linear dependence. The factors affecting the sensor sensitivity are inspected, which include the exciting signal frequency, the peak voltage and the susceptibility of magnetic fluid.

Abstract. A nearly four-decade, satellite-based velocity survey of the largest glaciers in the Alaska Range, Chugach Mountains, and the Wrangell Mountains of southern Alaska, spanning the early- to mid-1970s through the 2000s, reveals nine pulsing glaciers: Capps, Copper, Eldridge, Kahiltna, Matanuska, Nabesna, Nizina, Ruth, and Sanford glaciers. The pulses increase velocity by up to 2449% (Capps Glacier) or as little as 77% (Nabesna Glacier), with velocity increases for the other glaciers in the range of 100–250%. The pulses may last from between six years (Copper Glacier) to 12 years (Nizina Glacier) and consist of a multi-year acceleration phase followed by a multi-year deceleration phase during which significant portions of each glacier move en masse. The segments of each glacier affected by the pulses may be anywhere from 14 km (Sanford Glacier) to 36 km (Nabesna Glacier) in length and occur where the glaciers are either laterally constricted or joined by a major tributary, and the surface slopes at these locations are very shallow, 1–2°, suggesting the pulses occur where the glaciers are overdeepened. A conceptual model to explain the cyclical behavior of these pulsing glaciers is presented that incorporates the effects of glaciohydraulic supercooling, glacier dynamics, surface ablation, and subglacial sediment erosion, deposition, and deformation in overdeepenings.

One of the significant factors affecting the condition of the students’ visual apparatus is an illumination level in the premises of educational organizations. Electromagnetic radiation arising from computers also has an essential influence on a state of health. Taking into account the urgency of this problem, an analysis of illumination indices and EM radiation was made in audiences of higher educational institutions of various profiles (Ufa, the Republic of Bashkortostan). The total number of illumination measurements was 3528. The measurement methods met the requirements of the interstate standard. According to the results of the illumination indices estimation in the studied universities, a significant deviation from the regulated norms was revealed: in 71.5% of the measurements the index was below the norm. It should be noted that indices differed significantly depending on the type of educational organization. The best situation is in the “Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation,” where only 13.3% of the measurements are inconsistent with the normative indices. Pulsation coefficient also was determined. It turned out that 88.8% of the measurements do not correspond to the norm. The analysis of illumination measurements in computer classes was carried out. Only one-fifth of them in the computer table working area in the of the document placement corresponded to SanPin. An anonymous questionnaire was also organized for students from four leading universities in Ufa, the Republic of Bashkortostan. According to respondents’ answers, out of seven students, one was revealed to be suffering from myopia. On the basis of “Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Republic of Bashkortostan”, a study of non-ionizing radiation from video terminals located in computer classes was made. 1145 measurements were made in 20 buildings of four universities studied. It was found out that the intensity of the electrostatic field did not meet the requirements of SanPiN in 5.7% of the measurements. Hygienic assessment of the environment of educational organizations of various profiles revealed a number of significant deviations from the regulated norms. The obtained results testify to the need to monitor the illumination and EMR indices both from the administration of higher education institutions and from teachers. Based on the results of the study, recommendations were prepared for the management of higher educational institutions in Ufa.

Аn attempt is made in this work to establish correlations between the level of enzymatic activity of the soil and factors of an abiotic nature. It was found that the activity of invertase and urease in the soils of more southern territories is higher than that of northern ones. In soils with a pH value of the soil environment close to neutral reaction, the level of enzymatic activity is higher than in more acidic ones. The most sensitive to soil acidity among the studied urease enzymes. In relation to zinc, an inverse correlation was established between its content in the soil and the level of invertase activity. According to the degree of resistance to salinity, the enzymes are arranged in the following order: catalase> invertase> urease. An increase in the mineralization of the soil solution leads to an increase in the activity of urease. Of the studied enzymes, the most labile are representatives of the class of hydrolases (invertase and urease), less labile are oxidoreductases (catalase). Thus, when diagnosing the state of the soil by the level of enzymatic activity, it is necessary to take into account the main abiotic factors affecting the activity of enzymes: the average annual air temperature; pH and mineralization of the soil solution; the content of substances that inhibit microorganisms and block exozymes.

Abstract Introduction Sleep sex or sexsomnia is classified in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders as a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnia. The overall prevalence is unknown but several conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), shift work, and/or insufficient sleep have been reported as factors affecting the frequency of NREM parasomnias. Parasomnias, with sexsomnias in particular, can cause significant emotional distress to patients and their families. We present a case of co-morbid sexsomnia and OSA in a patient serving in the military that had the complicating factor of sleeping in open quarters. Report of Case A 40-year-old male in active duty military without significant past medical history or medication use presented to clinic with a two year history of disruptive sleep masturbation reported by wife. Patient’s wife reported no instances of attempted sexual intercourse. The patient had no recollection of the episodes. The frequency and nature of the episodes were causing personal and marital distress. Patient was also concerned about work responsibilities, since he was periodically required to sleep in open environments. After initial clinic evaluation, patient underwent a video polysomnography (vPSG) with an extended EEG montage. No parasomnia activity was captured on vPSG but patient was diagnosed with moderate OSA. He was started on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, resulting in decreased number of episodes with relapses corresponding to nights without CPAP usage. Conclusion Sexsomnia cases require careful history taking and evaluation. The nature of the episodes and the sleep environment of the patient must be examined for any medico-legal ramification as there are court precedents of sexual assault charges made in sexsomnia-related cases. The military environment is unique with group-sleeping conditions, often in austere environments. If sexsomnia were to be misinterpreted as indecent exposure, under the military code of conduct, this could have significant career implications.

Mealybug wilt disease of pineapple has a complicated etiology, which is not yet fully understood. As a result, assessments of the disease in the field, such as those that are made in the context of evaluation of disease control methods, are usually based on symptomatology. Field assessments, based on symptoms of mealybug wilt disease, were made in the Kurunegala and Gampaha districts of Sri Lanka. These data were fitted to statistical probability distributions as a method of summarizing the spatial pattern of disease incidence. Most plots showed aggregated patterns of diseased plants, but there were some exceptions. Summarizing patterns of disease incidence by means of fitting statistical probability distributions provides a basis for significance testing in cases where factors affecting disease incidence are the subject of field experimentation. Some examples of this methodology are given.
