Comments on the Social Dimension of Airplane Disasters

There are different social actors (or “collective social actors”) in a disaster who may have differing ideas on the “ideal passenger in a disaster”.This is an euphemism; it includes a gang of hijackers. Any suggested human failure in a complicated technical environment might be threatened or committed deliberately. Some attitudes of the ideal passenger, as seen from the point of view of the pirate, show that: i) the passenger ought to keep quiet, should not panic and should readily obey orders of the hijackers and must be easily persuaded by bullying tactics; and ii) the passenger must be selective in observing his situation —neither apparently looking at anybody nor recognizing anything, except to obey the commands he might receive from the hijackers. This one did not want the disaster to happen, e.g., a rescue team. It also has an “ideal passenger” in mind: i) he should not panic, and should keep quiet, after having given a signal that he is alive and needs help; ii) he should follow orders and should place his trust in personnel; and iii) he should do his best to help himself and identify emergency situations in his co-passengers and help them. The moment rescuers arrive he has to change his role and follow orders. This is the company operating the flight, as presented by the pilot and his crew: i) this party is interested in a quiet and non-panicking passenger; ii) expect him to follow their advice on trust; and iii) require him to take precautions seriously; i.e., reading the emergency regulations put in front of his seat, without unduly worrying about them, but remembering them when disaster strikes.

AbstractWe develop scholarship on status in international politics by focusing on the social dimension of small and middle power status politics. This vantage opens a new window on the widely-discussed strategies social actors may use to maintain and enhance their status, showing how social creativity, mobility, and competition can all be system-supporting under some conditions. We extract lessons for other thorny issues in status research, notably questions concerning when, if ever, status is a good in itself; whether it must be a positional good; and how states measure it.

This paper presents a theoretical and methodological framework to take into consideration the social dimension in a sustainable development project. To do this, the authors have developed the SocLab software environment, which implements a formalization of a well-established sociological theory, and enables the modeling of social organizations, to analyze their properties and to simulate social actors’ behaviors. SocLab was used to assess the social acceptability of new agricultural practices more in line with the preservation of water resources and natural environments, in a well defined context. The paper shows how it was used and presents the main results.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the social and collective foundations of the auditor’s judgment and specifically highlights that the dialogical dimension of auditors’ judgment is founded on both their interactions with their auditees and their interactions with their colleagues. Design/methodology/approach This qualitative study is based on interviews with 22 audit partners, conducted between March 2013 and October 2016, in France. Findings The research points out the complexity of auditor judgment. Confronted with issues such as equivocal and ambiguous circumstances, auditors must question the relevance of the meanings elaborated to act according to the situation (self-criticism or doubt) and must be wise and not be overconfident toward the information provided by the manager (wisdom). Last but not least, the findings also suggest that contrary advice helps auditors to improve an alternative point of view and hence reach a consensus. Originality/value The research uses a K. Weick sensemaking approach and contributes theoretically to gaining deeper understanding of the social dimension in audit judgment, by showing that professional judgment is an interactive and social practice.

This research examines social learning for sustainability (SLfS), particularly in its social dimension. Few studies have discussed or advanced on the ontological issues of SLfS relating to who social actors are becoming. This study aims to describe and analyze how the process of SLfS facilitates Brazilian families who were at the base of the social pyramid (no income) to change the status from landless campers to family farmers with land moving up four levels in the social pyramid over a decade. The research is qualitative interpretative, based on narratives from semi-structured interviews with 16 social actors and document analysis. The results show the meaning of learning professional ways of being family farmers from an existential ontological perspective.

The paper off ers an attempt to read the works of M. Bazhan focusing on the evolving motive of hope. It is stated that this motive has its cultural and historical scope and practical content. Presently the experience of hope becomes energy of progress and cultural creation. Hope is energized by active work and nourishes work, art, science, creativity. The methods of overcoming despair in Bazhan’s poetry have been updated over the course of decades in connection with the changes in perception of the social role of poetry. Although initially the comprehension of integrity was seen in the stream of the class struggle, later the poet preferred healing the soul with art. The philosophy of the author of the “Hoff man’s Night” was not contemplative; it was focused on existential and social problems and directed by humanistic values. It is no coincidence that the poet chose the least irrational of the three main Christian virtues, the most earthly and human one – the hope. Instead, most poets at all times cultivated predominantly faith and love. This fact might explain why Bazhan’s poetry never gained vast popularity but constantly attracted attention of critics and scholars. The author’s path from despair and fear to hope is the path from the local, psychological, individual to the universal, social, and philosophical. The continual motive of hope gives some unexpected coloring to a seemingly trivial Enlightenment-like picture of the future. The concepts of progress are being filled with drama and dynamics. Existential problems proved to be much more important than the ideal future projects. The sources and plan of the progress are contained not in the objective laws of the history, but exclusively in a human being, permanently fighting in the darkness and chaos. From this point of view, Bazhan is not a representative of the Soviet-style Marxism. In fact, his worldview is rather in tune with E. Bloch’s neo-Marxism or J.-P. Sartre’s existentialism.

Arte. Jogo.ABSTRACTArt understanding is something restricted by the social, economic, historical and existential elements of each subject. Consequently, in the moment of its opening for artistic interpretation, there is a game of several variables that allow or not to be able to understand the discourse of art. In this article, in the first section, we propose to unfold conceptually the notion of game from the philosophical point of view, joining it to the Gadamerian philosophical hermeneutics and the need to delve into what we call the game stadium so that it is possible to reflect dialogically about art. In the second section, the proposal is to ponder on how art is understood from re-reading the fields of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art, especially after the turn of contemporary art. Along with the theoretical contribution of Arthur C. Danto, we will address some basic elements of relevant variables to consider something as art or not and the intolerance of social groups that degrade cultural production through ignorance and inability to enter the contemporary art game. Keywords: Philosophy. Art. Game.

The increased interest in the topic of climate change (IC) on the part of the general public can be demonstrated by the fact that the number of search queries on Google with the topic "climate change" has doubled over the past five years. All this creates a field for the study of public opinion on the problem of IC. However, at the moment, there is a gap in the Russian literature in the study of this topic from the point of view of the social sciences; most of the works are devoted to the causes and consequences of this phenomenon from the standpoint of natural sciences and economics. The study aims to identify the differences in the nature of the impact between the "usual" socio-demographic characteristics and other characteristics of the inhabitants of European countries on attitudes towards climate change. The aim of the study is to assess the ability of "familiar" socio-demographic characteristics in comparison with "unusual" characteristics to explain attitudes towards climate change and to differentiate countries by the nature of the impact of these characteristics. The scientific significance of this work is to determine the place of "habitual" socio-demographic characteristics in the study of attitudes towards climate change. From an applied point of view, the nature of the influence of "familiar" socio-demographic characteristics is important when targeting a certain group of people (most often it is determined by such characteristics) in the framework of environmental measures.

The purpose of this paper is to present the social and psychological aspects of the impact of architecture of a hospital on all its users. The authors analyse the impact of factors shaping the architectural space of a hospital on the behaviour of patients and on the mutual relations between all the participants of the hospitalisation process. The hospital space has been presented from the point of view of the psychophysical needs of a patient, from the point of view of the medical staff and the visitors. The analysis includes the assessment of the quality of architectural space of a hospital as a place intended for the medical treatment, which is to facilitate the recovery of the patient and fast response of the staff in emergency situations.

The aim of this research is to help public transport managers to make decisions on the type of buses that should compose their public transport fleet, taking into account economic, environmental and social criteria from the point of view of sustainability. This paper fills a knowledge gap by including the social dimension of sustainability in addition to the economic and environmental dimensions. The original nature of this study lies in analyzing complementarities in the structuring of an efficiency and multicriteria problem. Our research analyzes Madrid public bus system data; the problem is structured in a comparative way between two analytical methods, a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and an ELimination Et Choice Translating REality (ELECTRE) III. Our research results show that two main groups of vehicles could play a part in part the theoretical solution. The main conclusions of this research are that (a) plug-in and induction electric vehicles are not comparable to GNC and diesel–hybrid vehicles in terms of cost, pollution and service; and (b) the ELECTRE III model provides more information in solving this problem than the DEA model.
