Abstract Objective: Neck circumference (NC) is currently used as an embryonic marker of obesity and its associated risks. But its use in clinical evaluations and other epidemiological purposes requires sex and age-specific standardized cut-offs which are still scarce for the Pakistani pediatric population. We therefore developed sex and age- specific growth reference charts for NC for Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2-18 years. Design: Cross-sectional multi-ethnic anthropometric survey (MEAS) study. Setting: Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Participants: The dataset of 10,668 healthy Pakistani children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years collected in MEAS were used. Information related to age, sex and NC were taken as study variables. The lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) and quantile regression (QR) methods were applied to develop growth reference charts for NC. Results: The 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 95th smoothed percentile values of NC were presented. The centile values showed that neck size increased with age in both boys and girls. During 8 and 14 years of age, girls were found to have larger NC than boys. A comparison of NC median (50th) percentile values with references from Iranian and Turkish populations reveals substantially lower NC percentiles in Pakistani children and adolescents compared to their peers in the reference population. Conclusion: The comparative results suggest that the uses of NC references of developed countries are inadequate for Pakistani children. A small variability between empirical centiles and centiles obtained by QR procedure recommends that growth charts should be constructed by QR as an alternative method.

Abstract Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) starts from early life, and is one of the important underlying factors for non-communicable disease (NCDs) in adulthood. Controversial evidence exists on the role of vitamin D deficiency in increasing risk of pediatric MetS. Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship between vitamin D level with MetS and its components in children and adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional nationwide study was performed as part of a surveillance program in Iran. Participants were 2596 students, aged 7 to 18 years, living in 30 provinces. In addition to filling questionnaires, physical examination was conducted, and blood samples were collected. Serum concentration of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured using direct competitive immunoassay chemiluminescene method.Results: 2596 students with mean age of 12.2 y (55.1% boys) were recruited. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in participants was 10.6% (n=276), and 60.5% (n=1570), respectively. Prevalence of MetS was higher in vitamin D deficient group. Students with deficient vitamin D level had higher odds of MetS (OR: 4.25, 95%CI: 2.26-7.98), abdominal obesity (OR: 2.24, 95%CI: 1.61-3.12), low HDL-C (OR: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.18-2.30) and high fasting blood sugar (OR: 2.56, 95%CI: 1.43-4.57) in comparison to those with sufficient level of vitamin D.Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency was associated with increased odds of MetS and its components in Iranian pediatric population. These findings underscore the importance of prevention and control of vitamin D deficiency in preventative programs against NCDs.

Unhealthy diets are recognized as a major risk factor for many diseases. The decrease in costs of industrialized products, as well as the possible misinformation about a healthy diet, has led to new behaviors in the dietary patterns of the pediatric population. The costs of dietary patterns have not been estimated in our population, so the objective of this study was to determine the cost associated with dietary patterns in Mexican children and adolescents, hypothesizing that a healthy diet is not necessarily more economically expensive. This study analyzed data from a population-based cross-sectional study of healthy children and adolescents in Mexico City. Data were collected from a food frequency questionnaire and the meal cost of habitual food shopping. Eating patterns were obtained by using principal component analysis. A micro-costing technique was performed to obtain the direct costs of each pattern. When comparing the healthy pattern with the transition and non-healthy patterns, it was observed that there were no statistically significant differences between the dietary patterns (p = 0.8293). The cost of the healthy pattern only takes up 16.6% of the total biweekly income of a salaried Mexican. In this study, no differences were observed between the costs of a healthy and a less healthy diet.

This paper investigates herding behavior and the connection between herding behavior and investor sentiment. We apply a Cross-Sectional Absolute Deviation (CSAD) approach and the quantile regression method to capture herding behavior in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets. The analysis results are outlined as follows. First, we find that herding behavior is exhibited during down-market periods in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets. However, we show that adverse herding behavior occurs in low-trading volume and low-volatility periods. Second, according to the results of the quantile regression, herding behavior is found in the low and high quantiles of the KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets. However, adverse herding behavior is also found, which means that investors herd in extreme market conditions. Third, the relationship between investor sentiment and herding behavior is analyzed through regression and quantile regression, and investor sentiment is confirmed to be one of the important factors that can cause herding behavior in the Korean stock market.

We analyze cross-sectional time-use diaries from the 2011 and 2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Shakai Seikatsu Kihon Chosa) to investigate the association between educational level and housework participation at different quantiles. Using the unconditional quantile regression method, we test whether education is associated with less time spent on housework as the previous research on highly educated people suggests. We find that this hypothesis stands only for non-married Japanese women. On the other hand, among married Japanese women, especially those without children in higher deciles of housework participation, are more likely to increase their participation in housework with the increase in their educational level. The results suggest that in Japan, the institute of marriage places higher expectations on women’s housework participation on married women with higher levels of education.

The interest in a healthy diet and lifestyle during the early stages of life increased, pointing out its role in the development of noncommunicable chronic diseases throughout adult life. Dietary habits and dietary patterns begin to be established in early childhood and persist during adulthood. Therefore, the EsNuPI (“Nutritional Study in Spanish Pediatric Population”) study aims to depict the dietary patterns, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors in Spanish children aged from one to <10 years old. This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study recruited a total of 1514 children from Spanish cities with >50,000 inhabitants, stratified by Nielsen areas. Participants were involved in one face-to-face survey, followed by a telephone survey after at least one week. Information about dietary intake and habits was obtained using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire and two 24-h dietary recalls. Physical activity and sedentary behaviors were registered using a specific questionnaire based on a seven-day record. Data were processed and stratified by categorical variables to be statistically analyzed in order to meet the study objectives. This study is the first of its kind in a Spanish reference population of this age range and the first to evaluate whether the consumption of adapted milk formulas and dairy products is associated with healthier dietary patterns and better diet quality and lifestyles in this group.

Background: Weight disorders are highly prevalent at the global level. Vitamin B groups are clearly involved in intracellular mechanisms, energy equation, and weight gain. The present study aims to evaluate the association of dietary vitamin B intake and obesity in a large pediatric population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among children and adolescents, aged 6-18years, living in urban and rural areas of 30 provinces of Iran. The BMI-for-age classifications were as follow: percentile <0.1, (emaciated), 0.1 ≤percentile <2.35 (thin), 2.35 ≤percentile≤84.1 (normal), 84.1 <percentile ≤97.7 (overweight), 97.1 <percentile (obese). A valid 168-item semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess the usual dietary intake including vitamin B. Results: Out of 5606 children and adolescents participated (mean age: 11.62, SD: 3.32),46.8% were girls. The intake of thiamin, pyridoxine, niacin and pantothenic acid increased the likelihood of obesity, compared with the normal-weight group. Odds ratios (ORs) (95% CI) of obesity for vitamin B1, B3, B5, and B6 were 1.32 (1.14-1.53), 1.01 (1.00-1.02), 1.04 (1.00-1.08),and 1.20 (1.04-1.38), respectively. Riboflavin, cyanocobalamin, biotin and folic acid did not have any significant association with weight disorders (B2: OR=1.09, 95% CI =0.99-1.20); B12:OR=1.00, 95% CI=0.98-1.03; B8: OR=1.00, 95% CI=0.99-1.00 B9: OR=1.00, 95% CI=1.00-1.00). Conclusion: The current study showed a significant correlation between consumption of vitamin B group and increased risk of excess weight.

Abstract Background The increased incidence of cardiometabolic risk factors has become a public health issue, especially in childhood and adolescence. Thus, early identification is essential to avoid or reduce future complications in adulthood. In this sense, the present study aimed to verify the influence of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as a moderator in the association between neck circumference (NC) and cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents. Methods Cross-sectional study that included 2418 randomly selected children and adolescents (52.5% girls), aged 6 to 17 years old. Anthropometric measurements, such as NC and body mass index (BMI), and CRF was measured by the six-minute running/walking test, as well as cardiometabolic risk (systolic blood pressure, glucose, HDL-C, and triglycerides), were assessed. Results For all age groups, NC showed a negative relationship with CRF. A significant interaction term was found for CRF x NC with cardiometabolic risk for children (6 to 9 years old), early adolescents (10 to 12 years old), and middle adolescents (13 to 17 years old). It was found that children who accomplished more than 1092.49 m in CRF test were protected against cardiometabolic risk when considering NC. In adolescents, protection against cardiometabolic risk was found when the CRF test was completed above 1424.14 m and 1471.87 m (early and middle stage, respectively). Conclusions CRF is inversely associated with NC and acts as a moderator in the relationship between NC and cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents. Therefore, this detrimental health impact linked to fatness might be attenuated by improving CRF levels.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to obtain the cutoff points of visceral adiposity index (VAI), a new marker of indirect evaluation of visceral fat, to assess its association with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a population of children and adolescents.<br /> Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on children and adolescents aged 7-18 years attended in the fifth phase of a national school-based surveillance survey. The odds ratio (OR) of cardiometabolic risk factors across tertile categories of VAI was determined using the logistic regression models and the valid cut-off values of VAI for predicting MetS was obtained using the receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.<br /> Results: A total of 3843 students (52.3% boys, 12.3 [12.2-12.4] years) were included in the analysis. The mean of VAI was significantly higher in participants who had MetS (2.60 [2.42-2.78] vs 1.22 [1.19-1.25]; P <0.001). Participants in the third tertile compared to the first tertile category of VAI had higher odds of abdominal obesity (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.43-2.20), impaired fasting blood glucose (OR: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.28-3.13) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR: 15.93, 95% CI: 12.27-20.66). The cut-off points of the VAI for predicting MetS were 1.58, 1.30 and 1.78 in total population, boys and girls, respectively.<br /> Conclusion: We determined the cut-off points of VAI as an easy tool for detecting MetS in children and adolescents and demonstrated that VAI is strongly associated with MetS. Prospective longitudinal studies are suggested to show the possible efficiency of the VAI as a predictor of MetS in pediatrics.

The study aimed to systematically review the literature to identify the prevalence of Brazilian children and adolescents that meet health criteria for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The search was performed in the electronic databases (PubMED, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science) and list of references of identified articles. Inclusion criteria were: population composed of children and/or adolescents (0-19 years or average age up to 19 years); studies with Brazilian children and/or adolescents and observational studies with cross-sectional or longitudinal design. The process of analysis of studies involved reading titles, abstracts and full texts. After these phases, 60 articles were eligible. Regarding the design, two studies were longitudinal. Of the total studies included, 49 presented moderate methodological quality values and 11 presented low methodological quality values, according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute instrument. The prevalence of children and adolescents who met CRF health criteria varied among studies (7.5% to 70.4%), and this variation was higher in girls than in boys. Total of 49.093 individuals aged 6-19 years were surveyed to compute all of these studies, resulting in 32.2% of subjects (27.7% of boys and 28.4% of girls) with CRF levels adequate for health around Brazil. These results may help to screen the pediatric population at risk if CRF is considered as a health measure.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal diseases are important trigger of public health concern in pediatric population. Non treated pathologies led to chronic inflammatory processes in adulthood. AIM: With respect to the lack of international studies on epidemiology of gastrointestinal disease in pediatric population, this study was aimed at analysis of national and local incidence rates of gastrointestinal disorders among children and adolescents in Kazakhstan over the period from 2012 to 2019. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study located on South part of Kazakhstan and based on the data obtained from the Republican Center for Health Development – the major data source on the country’s health statistics. From this, we extracted information on children (0–14 years) and adolescents (15–17 years) with gastrointestinal disease (K00-K95 International Classification of Diseases, Revision 10 codes). We calculated incidence rates for the whole country and Turkestan province. RESULTS: The national incidence of pediatric disease was characterized by relative stability, and was 7760.4 per 100,000 population in 2017. The incidence of peptic ulcers and gallbladder disease in adolescents substantially exceeded that in children. At provincial level the incidence of gastritis/duodenitis and peptic ulcers was gradually declining, while that of gallbladder disease was subjected to growth over the past years. Adolescents had higher rates of gastrointestinal disease both at national and provincial levels. CONCLUSION: The analysis of national and local incidence rates of gastrointestinal disorders among children and adolescents in Kazakhstan showed that more studies are needed to obtain in-depth understanding of risk factors associated with gastrointestinal disease in child and adolescent population of Kazakhstan, including the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection. Besides, a national registry on pediatric gastrointestinal disease should be envisaged to overcome the lack of essential data.
