AbstractCOVID-19 pandemic exerts a health care emergency around the world. The illness severity is heterogeneous. It is mostly unknown why some individuals who are positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies stay asymptomatic while others show moderate to severe disease symptoms. Reliable biomarkers for early detection of the disease are urgently needed to attenuate the virus’s spread and help make early treatment decisions. Bioactive sphingolipids play a crucial role in the regulation of viral infections and pro-inflammatory responses involved in the severity of COVID-19. However, any roles of sphingolipids in COVID-19 development or detection remain unknown. In this study, lipidomics measurement of serum sphingolipids demonstrated that reduced sphingosine levels are highly associated with the development of symptomatic COVID-19 in the majority (99.24%) SARS-CoV-2-infected patients compared to asymptomatic counterparts. The majority of asymptomatic individuals (73%) exhibited increased acid ceramidase (AC) in their serum, measured by Western blotting, consistent with elevated sphingosine levels compared to SARS-CoV-2 antibody negative controls. AC protein was also reduced in almost all of the symptomatic patients’ serum, linked to reduced sphingosine levels, measured in longitudinal acute or convalescent COVID-19 samples. Thus, reduced sphingosine levels provide a sensitive and selective serologic biomarker for the early identification of asymptomatic versus symptomatic COVID-19 patients.

SummaryThe gastric-adapted bacteriumHelicobacter pyloriplays an important role in gastritis and ulcer disease, but no phenotypic typing scheme presently exists for this organism. With a view to the development of genotypic typing, we have compared isolates ofH. pylorifrom gastritis or ulcer patients with those from subjects exhibiting no disease. Variation was analysed at the urease genes,ureA andureCD, by employing PCR-generated probes in genomic Southern blot hybridizations. WhilstureA restriction fragments provided a fourfold subgrouping of strains,ureCD fragments were considerably more discriminatory. Twenty-four combinedureACD profiles were generated withHindIII, subdividing the 64 strains into 11 types and 13 single profiles. The most prevalent profile (UI) was found in 33% of strains, almost all from gastritis or ulcer patients. On the other hand strains isolated from asymptomatic individuals had the most diverseureACD profiles. A key finding from this set of isolates was that strains ofH. pyloriassociated with general gastroduodenal disease were genetically more homogeneous than strains carried by people without disease symptoms.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic infectious disease threatening the world, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). While fever, cough, fatigue and shortness of breath are common symptoms, a sudden chemosensory (taste and/or smell) dysfunctions are increasingly reported in asymptomatic individuals that later test positive for COVID-19. The exact pathogenesis of these chemosensory disorders in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients has not yet been clarified. This review aims to provide a brief review of recent evidence for pathological mechanisms of the taste dysfunction in COVID-19 patients. We also discuss the possibility of using isolated sudden onset of taste alterations as an early symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection that might be very helpful for reducing the spread of COVID-19 through early identification.

CD30 is up-regulated in several human diseases and viral infections but its role in immune regulation is poorly understood. Here, we report the expression of a functional soluble CD30 homologue, viral CD30 (vCD30), encoded by ectromelia (mousepox) virus, a poxvirus that causes a severe disease related to human smallpox. We show that vCD30 is a 12-kD secreted protein that not only binds CD30L with high affinity and prevents its interaction with CD30, but it also induces reverse signaling in cells expressing CD30L. vCD30 blocked the generation of interferon γ–producing cells in vitro and was a potent inhibitor of T helper cell (Th)1- but not Th2-mediated inflammation in vivo. The finding of a CD30 homologue encoded by ectromelia virus suggests a role for CD30 in antiviral defense. Characterization of the immunological properties of vCD30 has uncovered a role of CD30–CD30L interactions in the generation of inflammatory responses.

Abstract The COVID19, a fatal disease by coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in late 2019 in China is now pandemic caused severe acute respiratory syndrome. The pandemic of COVID-19 has reached almost all regions of the world including territories with the death toll of more than 35,000. It has been estimated that one out every six-person affected by COVID-19 developed life-threatening conditions. The difficulty is that there are no vaccines or no specific treatment modalities for the management of COVID-19, apart from symptomatic treatments. Efforts for the development of vaccines and other specific treatment modalities are co-ordinated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with many clinical trials ongoing with modern and traditional medicines. In this regard, various Phyto-actives from the plants are getting analyzed, which has earlier shown to be effective in various viral infections. Therefore, keeping the world scenario and due to the lack of vaccine, we have in silico studied the activity of tetrahydrocurcumin, a major metabolite of curcumin, a household spice, matairesinol, a major compound in wheat bran or flaxseed and vitamin K2-7 against both SARS-CoV's main peptide and COVID-19 Mpro.

Maize mosaic virus (MMV) causes a severe disease of Zea mays in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including the southern U.S. (1-3). Fig. 1 shows internal cross striations of helical nucleoprotein and bounding membrane with surface projections typical of many plant rhabdovirus particles including MMV (3). Immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) was investigated as a method for identifying MMV. Antiserum to MMV was supplied by Ramon Lastra (Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, Caracas, Venezuela).

In the world auto market, top three companies are VW(Volkswagen), Runault-Nissan-Mistubishi, and Toyota. About some selected countries and areas, China, England, Italy, Australia, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Sweden, USA, Brazil, UAE, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand are more competitive. However, the situation is different. Seeing monopolistic market countries and areas, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, France, India, and Pakistan, in particular, the influence of Japan to Taiwan, India, and Pakistan is very big. But in Korea and France, their own companies’ brands occupy the market. In Japan domestic market, the overall situation is competitive. Almost all vehicles made in Japan are Japanese brand. From now on, we have to note the development of electric vehicle (EV) and other new technologies such as automatic driving and connected car. That is because they will give a great impact on the auto industry and market of Japan. Now Japan’s auto industry is going to be consolidated into three groups, Honda, Toyota group, and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group for seeking the scale merit of economy. Therefore, I will pay attention to the worldwide development of EV and other new technologies and the reorganization of auto companies groups.

The main content of the work consists of certain systematization and addition of longexisting, but eventually deformed and partly lost qualitative ideas about the role of thermal and wind factors that determine the physical mechanism of the World Ocean’s General Circulation System (OGCS). It is noted that the conceptual foundations of the theory of the OGCS in one form or another are contained in the works of many well-known hydrophysicists of the last century, but the aggregate, logically coherent description of the key factors determining the physical model of the OGCS in the public literature is not so easy to find. An attempt is made to clarify and concretize some general ideas about the two key blocks that form the basis of an adequate physical model of the system of oceanic water masses motion in a climatic scale. Attention is drawn to the fact that when analyzing the OGCS it is necessary to take into account not only immediate but also indirect effects of thermal and wind factors on the ocean surface. In conclusion, it is noted that, in the end, by the uneven flow of heat to the surface of the ocean can be explained the nature of both external and almost all internal factors, in one way or another contributing to the excitation of the general, or climatic, ocean circulation.

BACKGROUND Adopting non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) can affect COVID-19 growing trends, decrease the number of infected cases, and thus reduce mortality and healthcare demand. Almost all countries in the world have adopted non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to control the spread rate of COVID-19; however, it is unclear what are differences in the effectiveness of NPIs among these countries. OBJECTIVE We hypothesize that COVID-19 case growth data reveals the efficacy of NPIs. In this study, we conduct a secondary analysis of COVID-19 case growth data to compare the differences in the effectiveness of NPIs among 16 representative countries in the world. METHODS This study leverages publicly available data to learn patterns of dynamic changes in the reproduction rate for sixteen countries covering Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Africa. Furthermore, we model the relationships between the cumulative number of cases and the dynamic reproduction rate to characterize the effectiveness of the NPIs. We learn four levels of NPIs according to their effects in the control of COVID-19 growth and categorize the 16 countries into the corresponding groups. RESULTS The dynamic changes of the reproduction rate are learned via linear regression models for all of the studied countries, with the average adjusted R-squared at 0.96 and the 95% confidence interval as [0.94 0.98]. China, South Korea, Argentina, and Australia are at the first level of NPIs, which are the most effective. Japan and Egypt are at the second level of NPIs, and Italy, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Spain, are at the third level. The US and UK have the most inefficient NPIs, and they are at the fourth level of NPIs. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 case growth data provides evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of the NPIs. Understanding the differences in the efficacy of the NPIs among countries in the world can give guidance for emergent public health events. CLINICALTRIAL NA
