In order to study the influence of the ventilating cavitation flow at the shoulder of a submerged-launched vehicle on the surface hydrodynamic characteristics, a three-dimensional potential model for the shoulder ventilation of the vehicle was established based on the homogeneous multiphase flow theory, standard RNG k-ε model, Singhal cavitation model and overlapping grid technology, and the numerical simulation of the unsteady evolution process of the ventilated cavitation flow was carried out, and the cavitation flow morphology evolution, surface pressure distribution and resistance characteristics under different ventilation rates were compared. The results showed that the thickness and length of the ventilated cavitation flow in the early stage of fusion continue increased with the increasing of ventilation volume, and its thickness and length changed slightly in the later stage; when the exhaust position did not change and the ventilation volume was within a certain range, the differential pressure resistance coefficient and viscous resistance coefficient decreased with the increasing of internal pressure of the ventilated cavity.

Generally, the operation of the horizontally-framed miter gate in a ship lock should consider the effects of hydrodynamic resistance. If over-filling or over-emptying exists and the miter gate opens with reverse head, the hydrodynamic resistance will increase rapidly, endangering the operation safety of the miter gate. In order to study the operating characteristics of the miter gate, a prototype test is introduced in this paper. Results show that, during the filling or emptying process, when water levels at both sides of the miter gate are equal the first time, opening the gate in a timely manner can obviously avoid the influence of reverse head. Furthermore, a three-dimensional numerical model with a dynamic mesh is established for analyzing the hydrodynamic characteristics in different operating conditions. Results show that the peak value of operating load always occurs at the initial time, and the greater the submerged water depth, the larger the peak value. With the increasing of reverse head, the piston rods sustain a great compression, and the peak value appears at an early stage of gate opening. The results have a reference value for the design of a miter gate in the related engineering projects.

A new type of cylindrical gas film seal (CGFS) with a flexible support is proposed according to the working characteristics of the fluid dynamic seal in high-rotational-speed fluid machinery, such as aero-engines and centrifuges. Compared with the CGFS without a flexible support, the CGFS with flexible support presents stronger radial floating characteristics since it absorbs vibration and reduces thermal deformation of the rotor system. Combined with the structural characteristics of a film seal, an analytical model of CGFS with a flexible wave foil is established. Based on the fluid-structure coupling analysis method, the three-dimensional flow field of a straight-groove CGFS model is simulated to study the effects of operating and structural parameters on the steady-state characteristics and the effects of gas film thickness, eccentricity, and the number of wave foils on the equivalent stress of the flexible support. Simulation results show that the film stiffness increases significantly when the depth of groove increases. When the gas film thickness increases, the average equivalent stress of the flexible support first decreases and then stabilizes. Furthermore, the number of wave foils affects the average foils thickness. Therefore, when selecting the number of wave foils, the support stiffness and buffer capacity should be considered simultaneously.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate inter- and intra-fraction organ motion as well as to quantify clinical target volume (CTV) to planning target volume (PTV) margins to be adopted in the stereotactic treatment of early stage glottic cancer. Methods and materials Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) to 36 Gy in 3 fractions was administered to 23 patients with early glottic cancer T1N0M0. Patients were irradiated with a volumetric intensity modulated arc technique delivered with 6 MV FFF energy. Each patient underwent a pre-treatment cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to correct the setup based on the thyroid cartilage position. Imaging was repeated if displacement exceeded 2 mm in any direction. CBCT imaging was also performed after each treatment arc as well as at the end of the delivery. Swallowing was allowed only during the beam-off time between arcs. CBCT images were reviewed to evaluate inter- and intra-fraction organ motion. The relationships between selected treatment characteristics, both beam-on and delivery times as well as organ motion were investigated. Results For the population systematic (Ʃ) and random (σ) inter-fraction errors were 0.9, 1.3 and 0.6 mm and 1.1, 1.3 and 0.7 mm in the left-right (X), cranio-caudal (Y) and antero-posterior (Z) directions, respectively. From the analysis of CBCT images acquired after treatment, systematic (Ʃ) and random (σ) intra-fraction errors resulted 0.7, 1.6 and 0.7 mm and 1.0, 1.5 and 0.6 mm in the X, Y and Z directions, respectively. Margins calculated from the intra-fraction errors were 2.4, 5.1 and 2.2 mm in the X, Y and Z directions respectively. A statistically significant difference was found for the displacement in the Z direction between patients irradiated with > 2 arcs versus ≤ 2 arcs, (MW test, p = 0.038). When analyzing mean data from CBCT images for the whole treatment, a significant correlation was found between the time of delivery and the three dimensional displacement vector (r = 0.489, p = 0.055), the displacement in the Y direction (r = 0.553, p = 0.026) and the subsequent margins to be adopted (r = 0.626, p = 0.009). Finally, displacements and the subsequent margins to be adopted in Y direction were significantly greater for treatments with more than 2 arcs (MW test p = 0.037 and p = 0.019, respectively). Conclusions In the setting of controlled swallowing during treatment delivery, intra-fraction motion still needs to be taken into account when planning with estimated CTV to PTV margins of 3, 5 and 3 mm in the X, Y and Z directions, respectively. Selected treatments may require additional margins.

This study describes the aerodynamic efficiency of a forebody–inlet configuration and computational investigation of a drone system, capable of sustainable supersonic cruising at Mach 1.60. Because the whole drone configuration is formed around the induction system and the design is highly interrelated to the flow structure of forebody and inlet efficiency, analysis of this section and understanding its flow pattern is necessary before any progress in design phases. The compression surface is designed analytically using oblique shock patterns, which results in a low drag forebody. To study the concept, two inlet–forebody geometries are considered for Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation using ANSYS Fluent code. The supersonic and subsonic performance, effects of angle of attack, sideslip, and duct geometries on the propulsive efficiency of the concept are studied by solving the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations in structured cell domains. Comparing the results with the available data from other sources indicates that the aerodynamic efficiency of the concept is acceptable at supersonic and transonic regimes.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is often used to study fluid flow and structures motion in fluids. The CFD normally requires large size of arrays and computer memory and then caused long execution time. However, Innovation of computer hardware such as multi-cores processor provides an alternative solution to improve this programming performance. This paper discussed loop parallelize multi-cores processor for optimization of sequential looping CFD code. This loop parallelize CFD was achieved by applying multi-tasking or multi-threading code into the original CFD code which was developed by one of the authors. The CFD code was developed based on Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) method. The new CFD code program was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic (VB) programming language. In the early stage, the whole CFD code was constructed in a sequential flow before it is modified to parallel flow by using VBs multi-threading library. In the comparison, fluid flow around the hull of round-shaped FPSO was selected to compare the performance of both the programming codes. Besides, executed results of this self-developed code such as pressure distribution around the hull were also presented in this paper.

Larvae of bony fish swim in the intermediate Reynolds number ( Re ) regime, using body- and caudal-fin undulation to propel themselves. They share a median fin fold that transforms into separate median fins as they grow into juveniles. The fin fold was suggested to be an adaption for locomotion in the intermediate Reynolds regime, but its fluid-dynamic role is still enigmatic. Using three-dimensional fluid-dynamic computations, we quantified the swimming trajectory from body-shape changes during cyclic swimming of larval fish. We predicted unsteady vortices around the upper and lower edges of the fin fold, and identified similar vortices around real larvae with particle image velocimetry. We show that thrust contributions on the body peak adjacent to the upper and lower edges of the fin fold where large left–right pressure differences occur in concert with the periodical generation and shedding of edge vortices. The fin fold enhances effective flow separation and drag-based thrust. Along the body, net thrust is generated in multiple zones posterior to the centre of mass. Counterfactual simulations exploring the effect of having a fin fold across a range of Reynolds numbers show that the fin fold helps larvae achieve high swimming speeds, yet requires high power. We conclude that propulsion in larval fish partly relies on unsteady high-intensity vortices along the upper and lower edges of the fin fold, providing a functional explanation for the omnipresence of the fin fold in bony-fish larvae.

A one-dimensional centrifugal compressor performance prediction technique that has been available for some time is updated as a result of extracting the component performance from three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses. Confidence in the CFD results is provided by comparison of overall performance for one of the compressor examples. The extracted impeller characteristic is compared with the original impeller loss model, and this indicated that some improvement was desirable. The position of least impeller loss was determined using a traditional axial compressor cascade method, and suitable algebraic expressions were derived to match the CFD data. The merit of the approach lies with the relative ease that CFD component performance currently can be achieved and adjusting one-dimensional methods to agree with the CFD-derived models.

Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC) package has been emerged a promising option to tackle the thermal management issue of micro-electronic devices. In the present study, three dimensional numerical analysis of heat and fluid flow through PLCC packages oriented in-line and mounted horizontally on a printed circuit board, is carried out using a commercial CFD code, FLUENTTM. The simulation is performed for 12 PLCC under different inlet velocities and chip powers. The contours of average junction temperatures are obtained for each package under different conditions. It is observed that the junction temperature of the packages decreases with increase in inlet velocity and increases with chip power. Moreover, the increase in package density significantly contributed to rise in temperature of chips. Thus the present simulation demonstrates that the chip density (the number of packages mounted on a given area), chip power and the coolant inlet velocity are strongly interconnected; hence their appropriate choice would be crucial.
