Current requirements for building insulation are constantly increasing, not only in terms of the technical properties of the material used but also in terms of the environmental burden. This article focuses on the use of technical hemp in the building industry, describes individual products, its properties and uses. Part of the article is also the experience of realization and use of the building along with photographs.

This research investigates how contingency is currently calculated in project budgets within the building industry. This is an important aspect to consider as a large proportion of construction projects are significantly over-budget. The study presents three non-simulation methods and one simulation method for calculating cost contingency following the results of a forthcoming journal paper. These methods are applied against a case study project in attempt to highlight the most reliable method, and to create a methodology that will be useful to the industry. This paper identifies that the traditional fixed percentage approach is not sufficient and suggests that this could be one of the main reasons why construction projects are over budget. While it is unclear which method is the most reliable, this study provides a focus for future research into reliability and utilisation of contingency methods in the building industry. The research demonstrates that current practice needs to change to reduce the large number of construction projects that run over budget.

Well into the seventh century, masons in Rome built bonded-masonry walls using materials and techniques directly descended from antiquity. But walls erected starting in the eighth century are very different and distinctively ‘medieval’. The late seventh / early eighth century therefore represents a moment of rapid transition or even rupture in the Roman building industry, when older ways of doing things ceased forever. Drawing on recently excavated structures on the Palatine and at San Paolo fuori le Mura that offer new insights into this crucial transitional period, I suggest that the break with centuries-old building traditions reflects a fundamental shift in mechanisms of patronage, and of control over the city's built environment. After a hiatus in the second half of the seventh century, when the Roman construction industry languished between a Byzantine administration in decline and a Church bureaucracy not yet empowered to supplant it, early eighth-century popes faced the challenge of creating anew the means and methods to build on a substantial scale. The newly excavated structures of the early eighth century offer an unexpected perspective on the growth of, and the growing pains experienced by, Rome's nascent papal government.

Over the years researchers have paid little attention to the performance of the clients in the building industry. Much of the research on improvement of performance of the construction industry has mainly focused on contractors and the supply chain. The performance of a client is important because any decision made will affect project success. Failure on the part of the client might lead to stress factors causing significant problems in successive stages of the project. This research is an investigation into the roles of the client to find out whether clients in the building industry in Uganda are playing their part. Due to the non‐specific nature of clients, a guided questionnaire survey was carried out among architects who normally work with different types of clients. The majority of the building clients in Uganda are individuals followed by limited liability companies. It was found out that delay by clients in paying the contractors is a major factor affecting the performance of contractors. Almost all clients do not support training of the workers in its different forms. Construction works start before the designs are completed and the majority of the variations is due to incomplete briefs and designs. Many clients or their representatives do not attend meetings as regularly as would have been necessary. This study reveals information that will help clients in their future projects for ensuring successful building project implementation. Santrauka Daug metų mokslininkai mažai kreipė dėmesio į užsakovų dalyvavimą statybos pramonėje. Dauguma atliktų mokslinių tyrimų, susijusių su statybos pramonės darbų kokybės gerinimu, yra orientuoti į rangovus ir tiekimo grandinę. Užsakovo dalyvavimas yra svarbus todėl, kad kiekvienas priimtas sprendimas gali daryti įtaką projekto sėkmei. Užsakovų žlugimas gali sudaryti įtampą, kuri gali kliudyti sėkmingai vykdyti projekto stadijas. Straipsnyje buvo nagrinėjamas užsakovų vaidmuo, norint nustatyti, ar užsakovai Ugandoje aktyviai dalyvauja statybos pramonėje. Buvo atlikta apklausa architektų, kurie dirba su įvairiais užsakovais. Dauguma statybos užsakovų Ugandoje yra ribotos atsakomybės įmonės. Taip pat buvo pastebėta, kad užsakovo delsimas sumokėti rangovams yra vienas iš svarbiausių veiksnių, darančių įtaką rangovų darbui. Beveik visi užsakovai nepritaria darbuotojų kvalifikacijos tobulinimui įvairiais būdais. Dažniausiai statybos darbai yra pradedami dar nebaigus projektavimo darbų ir dauguma nukrypimų yra dėl neparengtos techninės dokumentacijos. Dauguma užsakovų ar jų atstovų nereguliariai dalyvauja svarbiuose susitikimuose. Šis tyrimas pateikia informaciją, kuri padės užsakovams ateities projektuose ir užtikrins sėkmingą statybos projektų vykdymą.

The retention system of withholding a portion of payment to contractors and subcontractors is a peculiar feature of the building industry. In the past decade or so there has been much discussion about the practice of retentions in the US and UK construction industries. Anecdotal evidence without concerted research suggests that problems exist within the practice in the New Zealand construction industry, which this study will address. Retention practice affects the whole construction supply chain, but the effect the practice has on each party varies significantly. Thirteen interviews were carried out with experienced construction industry professionals, including clients, contractors, subcontractors and consultants. An analysis of their recorded views and perceptions revealed diverse views. Most agreed that problems with retention are very serious, the worst affected being the subcontractors who do not have much control or say. However, they said, in the absence of any better alternative, the practice is working well in its current form. Further research will work out some alternatives to the traditional retention practice so as to create more balance and fairness for all the parties involved in the supply chain.

BIM is urgently needed by Chinas building industry to meet its opportunities and challenges. However, compared with developed countries, the progress of BIM development in adoption and identify key barriers which strongly impact the BIM adoption so as to propose corresponding measures to remove the key barriers. A survey about barriers impact was carried out among Chinese construction practitioners. By using AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process),41 barriers of BIM in Building Industry of china were identified. In the last part of the thesis, a roadmap of BIM adoption and application in china was developed based upon the measures and characteristics of barriers of the BIM adoption in China.

Knowledge of the latest BIM systems is the main. The leader among programs in field of industrial and civil construction is Autodesk Revit. The aim of this work is an overview of Autodesk Revit and evidence of the importance of Autodesk Revit in the training of professionals in the building industry on the example of students` works.

The building industry contributed an impressive share in Pakistan's growth sector, where the construction industry contributes almost 2.74% of the GDP of Pakistan. In most metropolitan cities, the trend of building multi-story structures is at increase. However, this construction industry is a prominent accident-prone industry where laborers generally work in an unsafe environment. These projects suffer from fatal and non-fatal accidents as labor health and security are not a prime aim in the construction industry despite all employees still dealing with safety issues. This research examines the Occupational safety and health (OSH) performance in High-rise building projects in Pakistan. This review focuses on adopting qualitative approaches, using the comprehensive literature approach for seeking current practice in health and safety and OHS laws in Pakistan's building industry. Finally, it proposes a realistic strategy for developing a safe environment at workplaces. Research indicates that Pakistan's construction sector should consider workers' safety as a priority, update and enforce safety laws at the workplace to enrich OHS conditions in the Pakistani construction sector.

Evaluating the socio-technical dialectic reveals much about our values as a society, as a construction industry and as individual disciplines. This paper will share an interpretive cultural history of building in order to establish a context for the emergence of integrated practice technologies such as BIM, IPD and LEED. This will provide the foundation for determining whether these technologies are serving us well in contemporary practice given our most pressing challenges and opportunities. In short the purpose of this paper is to explain the context of building as a means for making our current practices more performative, that is less abstract and autonomous, and instead more connected, meaningful and valuable to the future of both society and the building industry.

Abstract Electroconductive composites are modern materials that are commonly used in many industries such as construction industry and machine-building industry. For example, these materials can be useful as sensors for monitoring changes in constructions, shielding stray currents from electrification networks, shielding electromagnetic radiation in operating rooms, cathodic protection against moisture or overvoltage protection of buildings. The topic of this post is the research of electrically conductive silicate composites with graphite-based fillers. In this research will be tested composites with different ratio and types of graphite and monitor their electroconductive properties like impedance, and physical-mechanical properties like compressive and tensile strength. The post describes basic properties and interactions of silicate electrically conductive composites with graphite fillers. It was found that by adding 10 % wt. graphite into silicate composites, impedance is reduced by 50% and compressive strength by 40%. The flexural tensile strength depends mainly on the roughness of the particles, where the coarser flaky particles transfer the load better and increase the strength while very fine graphites reduce the flexural tensile strength. Furthermore, it has been found that very finely ground synthetic graphites are most suitable for achieving low impedance of composites.

Serial failures have occurred when introducing new technical solutions in the Swedish construction industry. In an earlier interview study exploring introduction of new technical solutions, documentation and reference cases provided by the supplier are given as the main sources for evaluation. This paper aims at addressing the questions: 1. What kind of documentation concerning building physics are provided by suppliers? 2. How well does the suppliers’ documentation meet the need for verification? In order to address these questions, the case of hygrothermal performance of cross laminated timber structures in multifamily dwellings was chosen. An inquiry of data was sent out to four suppliers at the Swedish market, asking for documentation and reference cases provided. Based on the documentation given, an assessment was made of to which extend the documentation can support verification of appliance to the relevant requirements of the Swedish building regulations. The case study shows reference cases are scarce and existing documentation is not comprehensive, thus indicating the building industry might have a disproportional high confidence in reference cases. The results will be used to suggest requirements for reference cases to be used for verification.
