A series of unidirectional thermoplastic tapes (UD tapes) specimens based on carbon fibers and polyamide filled with fullerene soot in a concentration of up to 4 wt. % was made. From the obtained tapes by the method of hot pressing, composite materials (CM) specimens with 0/0 and 90/90 ply orientations were made. A study of the mechanical properties of the samples obtained by the 3-point bending test was made. Shown that the introduction of fullerene soot up to 2 wt. % can significantly increase the strength and modulus of elasticity of both longitudinal and transverse reinforcement directions. Further increase in the concentration of soot leads to a decrease in properties. A theory that describes the effect of fullerene soot on the properties of CM, including the increase and further decrease in properties, depending on the concentration of nanoparticles was proposed.

By 3D printing it is possible to create different structures with different fiber-laying directions. These structures can be created depending on the type of 3D printer and its software. The Mark Two printer allows printing Onyx, a material based on nylon in combination with microcarbon fibers. Onyx can be used alone or reinforced with kevlar, glass or carbon fibers. This article deals with 3D printing and evaluation of mechanical properties of printed samples.

The significance of composite materials and their applications are mainly due to their good properties. This imposes the need for their recycling, thus extending their lifetime. Once used composite material will be disposed as a waste at the end of it service life. After recycling, this kind of waste can be used as raw materials for the production of same material, which raises their applicability. This indicates a great importance of recycling as a method of the renowal of composite materials. This study represents a contribution to the field of mechanical properties of the recycled composite materials. The tension mechanical properties (tensile strength and modulus of elasticity) of once used and disposed glass-epoxy composite material were compared before and after the recycling. The obtained results from mechanical tests confirmed that the applied recycling method was suitable for glass-epoxy composite materials. In respect to the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity it can be further assessed the possibility of use of recycled glass-epoxy composite materials.

Abstract The control of the quality of mixture based on very short carbon fibers and epoxyde resins leads to suitable mixture for molding of complex geometries. A gain in fluidity is obtained if the suspensions are treated by ultrasounds and simultaneously stirred under vacuum. Addition in a very small ratio of microbubbles in the mixture allows to obtain a viscosity less than those of the matrix alone. For many polymer materials the gain of fluidity can be of 20 to 25% with size and concentration of the microspheres thoroughly chosen. A certain number of new resins is developped to elaborate composite materials with specific mechanical properties close to standard aluminium. Tensile test an ultimate stress are used to quantify the improvements of the mechanical properties. Fillers concentrations up to 30 % are obtained.

This study mainly analyzed the factors that affected the mechanical properties of laminated veneer lumber(LVL). To increase the mechanical properties, metal mesh was inserted into LVL that made of fast-growing timber. Effects of different factors were evaluated on the mechanical properties of LVL, several enhancement modes of metal mesh were designed to reinforce the LVL. Then, the mechanical properties (modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity) of the LVL specimens were measured by static bending test. The results of different enhancement modes were analyzed and compared to investigate the effects of different factors. The position of metal mesh and the mesh number of metal mesh make significant effects on the MOE; the type of metal mesh and the angle of metal mesh-wood grain do not have any obvious effects on the MOE. The type of metal mesh and the position of metal mesh make significant effects on the MOR; the mesh number of metal mesh and the angle of metal mesh-wood grain do not have any obvious effects on the MOR.

The ceramic channel is very important in SRL hot dipping system. High strength and fracture toughness of ceramic channel materials can improve the quality, productivity and economic feasibility of zinc plated steel. The purpose of this research was to find out the most suitable conditions of the ceramic channel that have best fracture strength and fracture toughness. The hot pressed composite materials was carried out by hot pressing Al2O3 with different content of ZrO2. The composite contained from 0-20 wt.% ZrO2. Hot pressed composite materials were observed for mechanical properties (density, hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength) and microstructure.

Additive manufacturing, commonly called 3D printing, has been studied extensively because it can be used to fabricate complex structures; however, polymer-based 3D printing has limitations in terms of implementing certain functionalities, so it is limited in the production of conceptual prototypes. As such, polymer-based composites and multi-material 3D printing are being studied as alternatives. In this study, a DLP 3D printer capable of printing multiple composite materials was fabricated using a movable separator and structures with various properties were fabricated by selectively printing two composite materials. After the specimen was fabricated based on the ASTM, the basic mechanical properties of the structure were compared through a 3-point bending test and a ball rebound test. Through this, it was shown that structures with various mechanical properties can be fabricated using the proposed movable-separator-based DLP process. In addition, it was shown that this process can be used to fabricate anisotropic structures, whose properties vary depending on the direction of the force applied to the structure. By fabricating multi-joint grippers with varying levels of flexibility, it was shown that the proposed process can be applied in the fabrication of soft robots as well.

This research aimed to develop and evaluation the mechanical properties of a particleboard produced with bamboo particles and coconut fiber in three different experimental conditions. The panels were manufactured with castor oil based polyurethane bi-component resin in three different ratios of the adhesive components (pre-polymer and polyol). Mechanical characterization was conducted to determine modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) in static bending. For the static bending test the better values were to the experimental condition 2, which relate de proportion of 1:1.5 of pre-polymer and polyol, respectively. This best solution is to reduce the amount of pre-polymer in the formulation of the adhesive, due to decreased of use of chemicals most polluting.

A series of unidirectional thermoplastic tapes (UD tapes) specimens based on carbon fibers and polyamide filled with fullerene soot in a concentration of up to 4 wt. % was made. A study of the tribological properties by the 3 Ball on Plate test and Ring on Plate test and was made. Shown that the introduction of fullerene soot up to 2 wt. % decreases scatter of CoF in both ranges of load and velocity. Also, this concentration decreases wear rate almost 2.5 times compare to unfilled specimen. Mechanism of friction and wear was suggested. The obtained tribological results are well consistent with mechanical properties, and agree with previously suggested theory of the effect of fullerene soot on adhesion between polymer and fibers.

The relativity was evaluated between dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) and static MOE, in order to assess the potential of using nondestructive testing (NDT) method as a checking tool for mechanical properties of wood-plastic structural plates. The dynamic MOE was evaluated on a FFT system, and the static MOE was determined by three point bending test. All of specimens were made of polyethylene(PE)and poplar flour. A significant correlation between the dynamic MOE and the static MOE was obtained from relativity analysis. These results suggest that the NDT method could be appropriate to estimate the dynamic MOE of specimens with different thickness.

The injection molding process of thermoplastic nylon produces nylon residues in the form of sprue. Nylon residues are non-biodegradable which causes serious ecological problems, hence recycling becomes a necessity. However, recycled nylon is subjected to thermal, oxidative, and mechanical degradation during process which may decrease the mechanical properties of recycled nylon. In order to overcome the decreased mechanical properties of recycled nylon, modification by combining recycled nylon with virgin nylon is considered. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of adding virgin nylon into recycled nylon on the modulus of elasticity and compressive yield strength. Settings and Design: Experimental laboratory research. Methods and Materials: A total of 45 samples were used. Samples were divided into 3 groups which include 100% virgin nylon as control (A), 100% recycled nylon (B) and combination of 60% virgin nylon with 40% recycled nylon (C). The samples were tested using Universal Testing Machine (Tensilon RTF, Japan) with three point bending test and compression test with the speed of 5mm/min with ultimate load. Statistical analysis used: The obtained results were analyzed using Univarian test, One-way ANOVA test and Turkey’s Honestly Significant Different test. Result: There was statistical significance in adding virgin nylon into recycled nylon on its mechanical properties, namely modulus of elasticity and compressive yield strength (p<0.05). Conclusion: The combination of 60% virgin nylon with 40% recycled nylon has better elastic modulus and compressive yield strength values compared to 100% recycled nylon.
