AbstractMint flavorings are widely used in confections, beverages, and dairy products. For the first time, mint flavoring composition of mint candies and food supplements (n = 45), originating from 16 countries, as well as their antibacterial properties, was analyzed. The flavorings were isolated by Marcussonʼs type micro-apparatus and analyzed by GC-MS. The total content of the mint flavoring hydrodistilled extracts was in the range of 0.01 – 0.9%. The most abundant compounds identified in the extracts were limonene, 1,8-cineole, menthone, menthofuran, isomenthone, menthol and its isomers, menthyl acetate. The antimicrobial activity of 13 reference substances and 10 selected mint flavoring hydrodistilled extracts was tested on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by broth dilution method. Linalool acetate and (−)-carvone, as most active against both bacteria, had the lowest MIC90 values. (+)-Menthyl acetate, (−)-menthyl acetate, and limonene showed no antimicrobial activity. Three of the tested extracts had antimicrobial activity against E. coli and 8 extracts against S. aureus. Their summary antimicrobial activity was not always in concordance with the activities of respective reference substances.

AbstractThe emergence of more and more drug resistance bacteria has led to the study of the antimicrobial activity of the compound isolated from Lannea kerstingii Engl. & K. Krause (Anacardiacea) since the active principles of many drugs found in plants are secondary metabolites. A compound was isolated using dry vacuum liquid chromatography and eluting with CHCl3 -EtOAc and monitored using TLC. 3 1 13 The glycoside was characterized using 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectra recorded in DMSO-d6 at 400 MHz and 125 MHz, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the compound was determined using agar diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/minimum fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) was determined using broth dilution method. The compound isolated was found to be β-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside. The β-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside (200μg/ml) was active against S. aureus, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, P. mirabilis, S. typhi, K. pneumoniae, E. coli, B. subtilis with zone of inhibition ranging from 24mm to 34mm and inactive against P. aeroginosa and Proteus vulgaris. It was also active against the fungi C. albicans and C. tropicalis but inactive against C. krusei. The MIC ranged from 25 to 50 μg/ml while the MBC/MFC ranged from 50 to 200 μg/ml. These results show the wide spectrum antimicrobial activity of β-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside.

We studied the influence of humus and different norms of vermicompost on the yield, nutritional value, and antibacterial properties of common garlic (Allium sativum L.). The use of the vermicompost caused an increase in the garlic yield by 1.7-3.9 t ha-1 for cultivar "Prometei" compared to the control "Sofiiskyi" and by 2.2-5.2 t ha-1 in relation to the control of cultivar "Prometei". It was established that the calory content could increase up to 22.68 g 100 g1 of fresh weight with vermicompost manure 5 t ha-1, and the total content of sugar is increasing by 21.52-40.81% depending on the cultivar. The content of vitamins increased alongside with rate of vermicompost introduction. We also revealed the influence of variety factor on the accumulation of vitamins. The antibacterial effect of the garlic essential oils against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis was significant; the diameters of the inhibition zone were for S. aureus 21.35-27.10 mm, for E. coli - 16.97-26.46 mm, and for B. subtilis - 16.42-25.36 mm. The number of Mycobacterium smegmatis colonies decreased by 23.96-43.44%. This study has been proved that garlic juice had considerable antibacterial effect on the studied bacteria (S. aureus, E. coli and B. subtilis); therefore, it can replace chemical antibiotics that have undesirable effects on the body, like allergy and antimicrobial resistance. Our data shows that using of vermicompost was more effective than humus.

Quercetin is a polyphenolic flavonoid with potential chemoprotective properties. In the present work its antibacterial properties were studied against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactobacillus casei var shirota by broth dilution method. Quercetin inhibited S. aureus, P. aeruginosa at concentration 20 mcg/mL while P. vulgaris and E. coli were inhibited at concentration 300 mcg/mL and 400 mcg/mL respectively. Shigella flexneri and Lactobacillus casei var shirota were completely indifferent even at concentration of 500 mcg/mL.

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from biological waste, as well as their excellent antibacterial properties, is currently attracting significant research attention. This study synthesized AgNPs from different mango peel extract concentrations while investigating their characteristics and antibacterial properties. The results showed that the AgNPs were irregular with rod-like, spherical shapes and were detected in a range of 25 nm to 75 nm. The AgNPs displayed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), showing a more significant impact when synthesized with 0.20 g/mL of mango peel extract. Therefore, the antibacterial effect of different diluted AgNP concentrations on the growth kinetic curves of E. coli and S. aureus after synthesis with 0.20 g/mL mango peel extract was analyzed. The results indicated that the AgNP antibacterial activity was higher against S. aureus than against E. coli, while the AgNP IC50 in these two strains was approximately 1.557 mg/mL and 2.335 mg/L, respectively. This research provides new insights regarding the use of postharvest mango byproducts and the potential for developing additional AgNP composite antibacterial materials for fruit and vegetable preservation.

The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Melissa officinalis was investigated in this paper. The essential oil was obtained by the principle of water and steam and analyzed by GC and GC-MS using FID and MSD. The main components of the oil of Melissa officinalis were geranial (17.30%), neral (14.70%) and citronellal (10.70%). The antimicrobial properties were tested against the following bacterial species: B subtilis, B.cereus Bifidobacterium sp., Corynobacterium sp., E. coli, Klebsiella sp., L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, Listeria monocytogenes, P. vulgaris, P. aerugenosa, S. enteritidis, Shigella sp., S. aureus, and fungi Candida albicans, Alternarija sp. and Aspergillus niger. The diffusion technique was used for testing: the antimicrobial activity, and the MIC was determined by the broth dilution method. The essential oil of M. officinalis showed high antimicrobial activity.

The interest in the antimicrobial actions of chitosan is due to its multiple properties and effects. The aim of the study was to assess the potential antibacterial effects of chitosan applied on 7 bacterial strains: Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Clostridium perfringens, Legionella pneumophila and Staphylococcus aureus. Six different concentrations of chitosan were dissolved in 1% acetic acid, following two working protocols (Kirby-Bauer method and testing for bacterial cell viability). The sensitivity of tested bacterial strains following the effect of exposure to chitosan decreased as follows: E. coli] L. pneumophila] S. aureus] S. pyogenes] C. perfringens] P. aeruginosa] E. faecalis. The inhibition rates for the bacterial strains E. faecalis, S. pyogenes and S. aureus highlighted again the strong antibacterial properties of this product. Conclude that the chitosan presents a different antibacterial effect against several bacterial strains of interest directly with the employed concentrations.

In Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley (Mexico), studies have been carried out on the essential oils of medicinal plants with antimicrobial activity and it was found that they present compounds in common such as: α-pinene, β-pinene, carvacrol, eugenol, limonene, myrcene, ocimene, cineole, methyl salicylate, farnesene, and thymol. The goal of this study was to assess the antimicrobial activity of essential oils’ compounds. The qualitative evaluation was carried out by the Kirby Baüer agar diffusion technique in Gram-positive bacteria (11 strains), Gram-negative bacteria (18 strains), and yeasts (8 strains). For the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), the agar dilution method was used. All the evaluated compounds presented antimicrobial activity. The compounds eugenol and carvacrol showed the largest inhibition zones. Regarding yeasts, the compounds ocimene, cineole, and farnesene did not show any activity. The compounds eugenol, carvacrol, and thymol presented the lowest MIC; bactericidal effect was observed at MIC level for S. aureus 75MR, E. coli 128 MR, and C albicans CUSI, for different compounds, eugenol, carvacrol, and thymol. Finally, this study shows that the essential oils of plants used by the population of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley share compounds and some of them have antibacterial and fungicidal activity.

Abstract In this work, we systematically investigate the sterilization effect of six kinds of commonly used commercial disinfectants, including the DuPont Virkon disinfectant, peracetic acid disinfectant, sodium hypochlorite, bromogeramine disinfectant, water-soluble allicin, and absolute ethanol, against the Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Monilia albican and Clostridium sporogenes. The inhibition zone was used to qualitatively determine the antibacterial effects of the six disinfectants, and then the minimum two-fold dilution method was used to quantitatively determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of the six disinfectants on the four pathogens. The result illustrated that the antibacterial effect of peracetic acid disinfectant is the best, and clostridium sporogenes is the most sensitive to it, followed by bromogermine disinfectant, which can inhibit the four pathogenic bacteria at the concentration recommended by the manufacturer. The antibacterial effect of DuPont Virkon disinfectant, sodium hypochlorite, water-soluble allicin and absolute ethanol is not as good as expected, and cannot inhibit the four kinds of pathogenic bacteria at the recommended concentration. In summary, the antibacterial effect of peracetic acid disinfectant is the strongest, followed by the bromogermine disinfectant, DuPont Virkon disinfectant, sodium hypochlorite and water-soluble allicin. The absolute ethanol exhibits the worst antibacterial properties.

The aim of the present study was to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of methanolic extract of root, callus and fruit of Myxopyrum smilacifolium Blume. Antimicrobial activity was tested using agar well diffusion with four bacterial strains viz: Escherechia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus of which E. coli alone was gram negative. The fungal strain employed was Candida albicans. Root extracts shown to be effective only against B. subtilis. Fruit extracts showed the maximum antimicrobial activity against all the microbial species considered for the current study except against S. aureus.
