Tourism and little penguins: a comparative study of survival and reproductive parameters

Abstract ContextTourism operations that provide the opportunity for wildlife viewing can support conservation management through public education, habitat protection, population management, research activities and revenue generation. However, alongside these potential benefits there can be negative effects on the species that include the possibility of reduced breeding success, survival and, subsequently, population growth. AimWe sought to establish whether a tourism operation affected little penguins Eudyptula minor by comparing reproductive and survival parameters of two managed populations in Oamaru, New Zealand. One population was the focus of a tourism operation, whereas the other (located nearby) did not provide any public access. The tourism operation implemented strategies to reduce human disturbance, including the reduction of noise, light and movement from visitors during viewing, and by ensuring that visitors were restricted to designated viewing areas. MethodsNesting boxes were installed at both colonies that facilitated weekly monitoring of the populations. The monitoring program (1993–2017) included weekly checks of every nesting box in the colony for the presence of eggs, chicks and adults. Chicks were weighed before fledging, and both fledglings and breeding adults were individually marked. Key resultsLay dates, breeding success, chick fledge mass and survival rates were not measurably different between the two populations, indicating that there was little evidence of negative effects on the penguins at the tourist site. ConclusionsThe slight differences observed between the colonies during the time series were attributed to environmental damage sustained at the non-tourist site and a difference in the proportion of un-monitored nest sites available to the penguins when the study was initiated. ImplicationsNotwithstanding the present findings, long-term and consistent monitoring of wildlife populations facing increasing pressure from tourism is essential to ensure effects are detected and that management procedures implemented to reduce potential effects.

Hydropower dams can negatively affect upstream and downstream migratory fish populations in many ways, such as blocking access to upstream habitats and causing injuries or mortality during downstream passage. For downstream passage at projects in the USA, federal regulators and agencies responsible for oversight of hydropower facilities typically require assessment studies and mitigation to address negative effects, with a primary goal of minimising fish impingement and turbine entrainment and mortality. So as to assess the effects of downstream passage of fish populations at a unique, small hydro project on the Mississippi River, impingement and entrainment rates, Oberymeyer gate passage, spillway gate passage, turbine survival, and total downstream passage survival were estimated. It was determined that 85% of fish passing downstream at the project would be small enough to pass through the bar spacing of the trash racks and 15% would be physically excluded. When 55% of river flow enters the turbine intake channel, the total project survival rates were estimated to be 77.3% with an Obermeyer gate bypass rate of 10 and 96.6% with a gate bypass rate of 90%. Therefore, any effects on local fish populations resulting from the operation of the project are expected to be negligible and inconsequential on the basis of expected survival rates for the range and probability of river flows occurring at the project.

The possible impact of invasive ants on the avifauna of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands was investigated by studying the breeding success of Tristram's Storm-petrel Oceanodroma tristrami on Laysan Island. The tramp ant Monomorium pharaonis (L.) was found to be abundant in storm-petrel nesting areas on Laysan Island. There were 380 observations made on incubating adults and 798 observations for chicks, for a total of 1178 observations from 116 storm-petrel nest sites. No ant harassment events involving incubating adult storm-petrels were recorded. Thirteen instances of more than 5 ants on Tristram's Storm-petrel chicks were recorded. One harassment event was recorded, involving approximately 200 ants. The chick left the nest site immediately following the event, did not return, and presumably died. The number of nest failures attributed to M. pharaonis was 1% (n = 116). There was a significant relationship between nest type and ant interactions (G = 24.45, p = <0.0001, n =55), with incidents only recorded from birds nesting under vegetation. It was hypothesized that the ant interactions recorded in this study were a result of Tristram's Storm-petrel chicks being in close proximity to M. pharaonis nests rather than direct predation. Thus no evidence was found of a severe impact of invasive ants on the breeding success of storm-petrels at Laysan Island. Despite no direct ant impact particular attention should be given to the interactions between M. pharaonis and bird species reliant on vegetation for nesting cover, and studies therefore should include additional breeding bird species.

SummaryNegative effects of poaching on seabird populations are not usually evaluated quantitatively when assessing seabird colony conservation status, nor are they generally considered a major concern. We demonstrate that poaching is still intense in the Canary Islands, and has negative consequences for the conservation of seabird colonies. We quantified the effects of poaching of Cory’s Shearwater fledglings on breeding success on different islands in the Canaries, comparing colonies that suffer from intense, medium, or no poaching. Poaching reduced the breeding success of affected colonies to almost a third, potentially causing the future extinction of the colony. Only colonies with intense wardening campaigns reached high values of reproductive success, showing that government surveillance in conjunction with volunteers from different NGOs is a very effective approach in reducing poaching. A population sensitivity analysis was also conducted to provide data on the factors that most affect the performance of the model. Although population growth and mean final population size varied with increases and decreases in mortality and carrying capacity, only harvesting resulted in a probability of 100% of extinction in 20–40 years. To promote seabird conservation in regions such as the Canary Islands, a core archipelago for seabird species in the Atlantic, poaching control should be elevated by society to a level of urgency, requiring dedicated funding and mobilisation of experts and volunteers to adequately address it through education, prevention and enforcement.

The article presents a mini review of the published research focused on understanding environmental and human health impacts nearby waste incineration plants. We found no studies indicating that modern-technology waste incineration plants, which comply with the legislation on emissions, are a cancer risk factor or have adverse effects on reproduction or development. There are several factors in favor of this affirmation: (a) the emission levels of the plants currently built in the developed countries are several orders of magnitude lower than those of the plants in whose environments epidemiological studies have been carried out and which have found some kind of negative association in terms of health; (b) risk assessment studies indicate that most of the exposure is produced through the diet and not by a direct route; and (c) monitoring dioxin level studies in the population resident in the environment of incineration plants did not reveal increases of these levels when compared with a population living in reference areas. A necessary condition for the development of a waste incineration plant is to generate the conditions to prevent any impact that activates or potentially carries damage or risks to the environment and, in particular, to health. This makes it imperative to use a preventive strategy through the implementation of a previous environmental impact assessment and the establishment of emissions standards and an emissions monitoring program in order to ensure the prevention of environmental damage.

The in vitro production (IVP) of bovine embryos is a well-established technique that has been available for nearly 20 years. However, there remain major differences between IVP-derived blastocysts and their in vivo-derived counterparts. Many studies have pointed out that most of these differences are due to the in vitro developmental environment. To circumvent these negative effects due to in vitro culture conditions, a new method – intrafollicular oocyte transfer (IFOT) – was established in the present study. Using modified ovum pick-up (OPU) equipment, in vitro-matured oocytes derived from slaughterhouse ovaries were injected into the dominant preovulatory follicle of synchronised heifers (follicular recipients) enabling subsequent ovulation, in vivo fertilization, and in vivo development. A total of 810 in vitro-matured oocytes were transferred into 14 heifers. Subsequently, 222 embryos (27.3%) were recovered after uterine flushing at Day 7. Based on the number of cleaved embryonic stages, 64.2% developed to the blastocyst stage, which did not differ from the IVP-derived embryos (58.2%). Interestingly, lipid content of IFOT-derived blastocysts did not differ from the fully in vivo-produced embryos, whereas IVP-derived blastocysts showed significantly higher lipid droplet accumulation compared with fully in vivo-derived and IFOT-derived blastocysts (P < 0.05). Accordingly, IFOT blastocysts showed significantly higher survival rates after cryopreservation than complete IVP-derived embryos (77% v. 10%), which might be attributed to a lower degree of lipid accumulation. In agreement, transfer of frozen-thawed IFOT blastocysts to synchronized recipients (uterine recipients) resulted in much higher pregnancy rates compared with transfer of IVP-derived blastocysts (42.1 v. 13.8%) but did not differ from frozen-thawed ex vivo blastocysts (52.4%). Of these presumed IFOT pregnancies, 7 went to term, and microsatellite analysis confirmed that 5 calves were indeed derived from IFOT, whereas 2 were caused by fertilization of the follicular recipient's own oocyte after AI. Taken together, IFOT-derived blastocysts closely resemble in vivo-derived blastocysts, confirming earlier suggestions that the ability to develop to the blastocyst stage is already determined in the matured oocyte, whereas the quality in terms of lipid content and survival rate after cryopreservation is affected by the environment thereafter. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting healthy calves after intrafollicular transfer of in vitro-matured oocytes.

Microcystins (MCs) are cyanotoxins produced mainly by freshwater cyanobacteria, which constitute a threat to public health due to their negative effects on humans, such as gastroenteritis and related diseases, including death. In Mozambique, where only 50% of the people have access to safe drinking water, this hepatotoxin is not monitored, and consequently, the population may be exposed to MCs. The few studies done in Maputo and Gaza provinces indicated the occurrence of MC-LR, -YR, and -RR at a concentration ranging from 6.83 to 7.78 µg·L−1, which are very high, around 7 times above than the maximum limit (1 µg·L−1) recommended by WHO. The potential MCs-producing in the studied sites are mainly Microcystis species. These data from Mozambique and from surrounding countries (South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania) evidence the need to implement an operational monitoring program of MCs in order to reduce or avoid the possible cases of intoxications since the drinking water quality control tests recommended by the Ministry of Health do not include an MC test. To date, no data of water poisoning episodes recorded were associated with MCs presence in the water. However, this might be underestimated due to a lack of monitoring facilities and/or a lack of public health staff trained for recognizing symptoms of MCs intoxication since the presence of high MCs concentration was reported in Maputo and Gaza provinces.

Female black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus), besides searching for their own food, "demand" food from their mates in the spring for extra energy needed to produce and incubate eggs. This behaviour signals their readiness to copulate and it is followed by increased levels of male – male aggression, probably to prevent cuckoldry. Increased aggression owing to limited nest site availability may also be locally important. Subordinate pairs disperse and many presumably die. The extra food allows females with nest sites to breed earlier than if they fed themselves exclusively, and producing early broods appears to be a better fitness strategy than having larger clutches or additional broods. Juveniles from early broods survive better and attain higher social ranks in flock hierarchies, and dominant pairs have the highest overwinter survival rates as well as a better chance than subordinate pairs of obtaining a territory in the spring.

&lt;p&gt;Citizen science is the scientific research that involves the participation of the public assisting professional scientists. This typically occurs in helping to data collection and/or data analysis, and an increasingly popular use of citizen science is the collection of phenological data, like wildflowers blooming in summer or leaves changing color in fall. Studying the life cycles of plants (phenology) reveals some consequences of climate change.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The PCTO (Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l'Orientamento) is a school-work alternation program and represent an innovative teaching method, introduced in 2015 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. This program, through practical experience, helps to consolidate the knowledge acquired at school and to enrich the student training. The school-work alternation is compulsory for all the students of the last three years of high school (13-17 years age). This program is a cultural change that incorporates good European practices, aimed at creating a synergy between school and work in order to encourage students to follow program learning inside of a public/private company.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The National Research Council of Italy is a partner of this program and each year students from high school are involved in technical and research activities. During the years 2015-2019, the Institute for the BioEconomy of Sassari, offered a School-Work learning program dedicated exclusively to Phenological and Pollen monitoring to groups of students of High School. While they employed their skills at work, they learnt to implement the specific protocols of a scientific project. These experiences increased their awareness of the essential role they can play by acquiring new knowledge of the environment and skills through scientific tools of citizen science. In this paper, results of the Phenological and Pollen monitoring program held at IBE-CNR Sassari are illustrated.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the future, citizen scientists can provide reliable observations when following scientific methods and standardized protocols. Phenological monitoring programs based on volunteers support will become increasingly important in providing open&amp;#8208;access, standardized data sets capable of supporting the process of answering ecological and global change questions.&lt;/p&gt;

We studied the use of nest-sites by Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) and the breeding success in these sites during 1998–2002 in Gamla Nature Reserve (Israel). Nest-sites in which a breeding attempt succeeded in fledging a young, were more likely to be occupied by nesting vultures in the following breeding season, than nest-sites that experienced a failure. This suggests that Griffon Vultures in Gamla used a Win–Stay/Lose–Shift strategy regarding nest-site fidelity.
