Abstract The aim of this study is to show how trans-national right-wing linguistic strategies and global xenophobic attitudes are reworked at national levels, and how, as a result, specialized country- and culture-specific coercion and legitimization strategies arise. Using a detailed, quantitative-qualitative method of analysis, we look at the Greek Cypriot extreme-right party ELAM to see how the party’s anti-migration rhetoric construes any foreign presence as threat, by proximizing it linguistically as ‘invasion.’ This strategy allows the conflation of the current ‘Other’ (migrants) with archetypical adversaries, such as Turkey. Indeed, anchoring the migration issue in the main national narrative, i.e., the long-standing Cypriot conflict, gives their xenophobic language conceptual coherence and strengthens its textual cohesion. In particular two figures of speech are the basis of this invasion script, the word metanasteftiko ‘the immigration phenomenon’ conceptualized as the kipriako (the Cyprus problem, i.e., the political division of the island). This parallelism opens the way for a number of inferences, while it also enables a conceptual shift from the real phenomenon known as globalization and multiculturalism to the imagined idea of a (white/Western) genocide. Data include comments responding to ELAM followers’ YouTube videos and mainstream press representations. Methodology includes corpus linguistics and discourse analysis focused on the fundamental metaphors found in the data such as migration as unbearable weight and migration as dirt.

YouTube has become notoriously associated with extreme right-wing communities that spread discourses of white supremacy and conspiracy. This study applies a social semiotic approach to analysing conspiratorial YouTube videos created by white supremacists in response to the Notre Dame Fire of 2019. In particular, this study applies a combined legitimation (Van Leeuwen, 2007) and communing affiliation (Zappavigna and Martin, 2018) framework to the verbal and visual content of 15 videos. Communing affiliation refers to how values are positioned as bondable in situation where users don’t interact directly (Zappavigna and Martin, 2018). It is formed from couplings of ideational (what is being evaluated) and attitudinal (how it is evaluated) meaning (Martin and White, 2005), hence forming a value that is bondable. Legitimation (Van Leeuwen, 2007) refers to how discourses establish authority and can be realised textually or visually, with various linguistic strategies. This study will focus on the idea of ‘technological authority’ construed by positive evaluations in the transcripts of screenshots as evidence and the use of screenshots as visual evidence. Overall, this study will show how key values are working in tandem with (de)legitimation strategies, how (de)legitimation can further explain the significance of these values, and how YouTubers artificially create credibility in their videos through these legitimation and affiliation strategies. This raises further questions about the invoked meanings of screenshots as evidence and the ethical dilemmas that screenshots become entangled in, when considering the attention given to false and hateful content that is shared online.

This study is entitled The Translation of English Figures of Speech Found in the novel Temperatures Rising into Indonesian. It was formulated two problems; types of figures of speech found in the novel entitled Temperatures Rising and the translation strategies implemented by translator to translate English figures of speech. It is aimed to find the types of figures speech in the novel and analyze the translation strategies implemented by the translator in the translation of the English figures of speech. The data which were used for this study were taken from an English romantic novel entitled Temperatures Rising in 1989 and its translation Hasrat Membara published by PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2104. Documentation method was used in this study by reading attentivelt and doing note-taking. Qualitative method was used to analyze the data. Besides, the result of analysis is explained descriptively. Two theories proposed by Larson were applied in this study. The first theory that mentions the type of figures of speech was used to discuss the first problem. The second theory that explains the translation strategy was used to discuss the second problem. The study showed that there were six types of English figures of speech found in the novel. Based on the second formulated problem in this study, it showed that there were only two strategies  implememted by the translator to translate the English figures of speech.

Abstract The threat of the Islamic State is realised both in its attacks and its discourse. To illustrate the role of linguistic threats, the present study investigates the ISIS online propaganda magazine Dabiq by combining Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics (Romero-Trillo 2008; Baker et al. 2008). Following the two groups described by van Dijk (2003), which are represented by the in-group (ISIS) and the out-group (against ISIS), we propose a third element: the translocal group (i.e., the people in between). The results show the substantial presence of linguistic strategies enhanced by Dangerous Speech (Benesch 2013) to create a high segregation between the groups. Also, the analysis shows the inextricable relationship between conflict and dangerous language and the need to investigate this link further, with special reference to the polarisation of the groups and to the subsequent escalation of violence in discourse.

Youtube is one of the most famous video-sharing and social networking platforms in the world. Due to its comment section function, Youtube also plays a role in describing the perception and reaction of the general public. This study aims to examine the discourse prosody found in the adjective suki and its co-occurrences. This is a mixed-method research where corpus linguistics is used for quantitative data analysis and, discourse prosody for the qualitative method. The Youtube comments chosen are five videos from Japan’s number one Youtuber, Hajimeshachoo in January 2020. Only the first 24 hours comments were picked. The findings show that the adjective suki is the most significant na-adjective used in the Youtube comments gathered. Na-adjective mainly co-occurred with an adverb that modified the adjective suki mostly to elevate the sense of likeness, adoration, or fondness of the content and/or creator of the video. The adjective suki can have both positive and negative discourse prosody depending on its co-occurrence.

ABSTRAK Pesatnya perkembangan teknologi media sosial membuat kepopuleran mudah didapat. Evie Effendi merupakan salah satu da’i populer di media sosial Youtube dilihat dari banyaknya jamaah, kalangan muda khususnya. Ia da’i nyentrik dan mempunyai ciri khas dalam dakwahnya yaitu mengenakan pakaian modis kaum muda serta selalu menambahkan humor dalam ceramahnya. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui, menganalisis dan mengkontruksi proses penyusunan retorika dalam dakwah Evie Effendi di video Youtube.  Penelitian ini menggunakan beberapa teori seperti, teori retorika yang diungkapkan oleh Aristoteles tentang seni untuk mempengaruhi orang lain (the art of persusasion) menggunakan prinsip ethos, pathos dan logos.  Teori retorika Jalaludin Rakhmat tentang imbauan persuasi dalam berpidato. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini  adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Data yang diperoleh melalui observasi, dokumentasi dan sampling. Data-data dianalisis dan dideskripsikan sesuai dengan teori-teori terkait. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa  retorika yang diterapkan oleh Evie Effendi meliputi ethos, pathos, dan logos, serta lima imbauan persuasi. Gaya bahasa yang digunakan Evie Effendi dalam dakwahnya meliputi, ta’lim dan tarbiyah (pengajaran dan pendidikan), tazkir dan tanbih (pengingat dan penyegaran kembali), targhib dan tabsyir (penggemaran amal sholeh dan penampilan berita pahala), tarhib dan inzar (menakut-nakuti dan menyampaikan berita siksa), qashash dan riwayat (penampilan kisah atau cerita masa lalu), serta amar dan nahi (perintah dan larangan). Kemudian,  humor yang digunakan adalah humor exaggeration, parodi, burlesque, dan belokan mendadak. Kata kunci : Retorika; Evie Effendi; Dakwah; Youtube ABSTRACT The rapid development of social media technology has made it easy to get popularity. Evie Effendi is one of the popular da'i on Youtube social media seen from the many worshipers, especially young people. He was quirky and had a characteristic in his preaching which was wearing fashionable clothes for young people and always adding humor in his lectures. The purpose of this study is to find out, analyze and construct the process of preparing rhetoric in the preaching of Evie Effendi on Youtube videos. This study uses several theories such as the rhetorical theory expressed by Aristotle about art to influence others (the art of persuasion) using the principles of ethos, pathos, and logos. The rhetorical theory of Jalaluddin Rakhmat about the appeal of persuasion in speeches. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data obtained through observation, documentation, and sampling. The data are analyzed and described in accordance with related theories. The results of the study prove that the rhetoric applied by Evie Effendi includes ethos, pathos, and logos, and five persuasion calls. The language style used by Evie Effendi in her preaching included, ta'lim and tarbiyah (teaching and education), tazkir and tanbih (reminders and refreshes), targhib and tabsyir (good charity and news reward appearance), tarhib and inzar (scare and news torture display), qashash and history (Appearance of stories or stories of the past), and amar and nahi (orders and prohibitions). Puppet umar maya is known as one of the characters in the sasak puppet story. This figure acts as an advisor to the knights in the right puppets, especially the advisor to the king of the Jayangrana king. As an advisor, this figure has a wise, humble, smart, brave, and loyal character to his country. From these various characteristics, this figure is respected by all right-wing puppets and respected by his enemies. In this research, the writer tries to describe the shape of the virtual puppet umar figures with the hope that the community, especially the younger generation among academics, can know the form of the puppet sasak, especially the virtual umar figures. The research method that I use is a qualitative method where the data collection is done by observation, interviews with the actors of Sasak puppet art, as well as reviewing documents that discuss Sasak puppets. From the results of research conducted by the author, the results obtained in the form of a description of the shape of the virtual umar characters in sasak puppets which are divided into urayan about the shape of the virtual umar figures in terms of the form of making ideas of virtual umar characters and the physical form of the virtual umar characters in the sasak puppet

Plastic has become a massive problem globally since there is a large portion of the ocean contaminated with plastic waste. Plastic becomes a material that cannot be broken down by soil and takes years to be broken. Therefore, many people try to influence each other to adoptthe zero waste lifestyle as a concern to the Earth. Zero waste has become a global activity that always encourages the society to reduce single-use plastics. Using single-use plastics can be found in everyday life, such as when going shopping to the market, sometimes the sellers will give plastic bag to the buyers. Most of the time, the plastic bag is only used once tobe throwninto the trash can. This research uses qualitative method. The researcher analyzes through zero waste lifestyle videos and books as the primary sources of this analysis. The results of this research are first, the step to get started to become a “zero-waste lifestyler”, second, how to be the “zero waste lifestyler”, and third, how zero waste can give the global lifestyle movement in Bali, Indonesia as their primary program, Bye Bye Plastic Bags, as in June 2019, Bali becomes the first province in Indonesia to ban in using single-use plastics.Keywords: bye bye plastic bags, single-use plastic; zero waste lifestyle

Right-wing populism is on the rise worldwide, and political attacks against universities have increased in the United States since the election of Donald Trump. In 2017, an incident occurred at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln which resulted in accusations of hostility toward conservative students. Just over a year later, political forces again attempted to denigrate the university’s reputation, but this time they did not succeed. This (multimodal) positive discourse analysis/generative critique combines collaborative auto-ethnography to describe the way these events were represented in the media, deconstructing a professor’s methods of countering a right-wing attack on an academic institution. Findings demonstrate the use of multiple strategies such as controlling the narrative through social media savvy; using linguistic strategies such as refutation of strawman fallacies, syntax, deixis and emotional appeal; and use of image.

Based on the definition of the subjunctive as a realisation of the grammatical category mood and an expression of the semantic/pragmatic category modality the book presents the first comprehensive and consistent description of the history of the present English subjunctive. It covers the periods Old English (OE), Middle English (ME), and Early Modern English (EModE), and it considers all contruction types in which the subjunctive is attested, namely main clauses, noun clauses, relative clauses, and adverbial clauses. Besides numerically substantiating the well-known hypothesis that the simplification of the verbal syntagm led to a long-term frequency decrease of the subjunctive, it explores the factors which governed its competition with other verbal expressions. The data used for the analysis come from The Helsinki Corpus of English Texts; they comprise nearly half a million words in 91 files. Their analysis was carried out by close reading, and the results of the analysis were processed with the statistical program SPSS. This combined quantitative-qualitative method offers new insights into the research landscape of English subjunctive use and into the fields of historical English linguistics and corpus linguistics.
