XIX в. Introduction. The author seems it relevant to appeal to the works of Nikolai Filippovich Pavlov, who left a significant impact on the Russian literature of the first half of the XIX century. He, being one of the first, raised the topic of social injustice and inhumanity of public orders. Though, the readers and critics of the 30s of the XIX century highly appreciated Pavlov’s works, the name of the author of the collections “Three Stories” and “New Stories” had become already among the “forgotten” by the end of the century. The scientists of Romanticism still mention N. Pavlov as a writer whose works were of a transitional nature and note his “movement” from romanticism to realism. Aim and objectives. The aim of the article is to analyze the ideological and thematic originality of Pavlov’s story “Scimitar” from the point of view of reflecting the social and cultural realities of Russia of the first third of the XIX century. Material and methods. The author examines Pavlov’s novel “Scimitar” included in the first collection of prose “Three Stories”, which became a triumph in the social and literary life of Russia of the 1830s. The author uses biographical, historical, cultural and comparative methods of research. Results and discussion. In the story “Scimitar” the author creates a true picture of the social relations and mores of the Russian society of the first third of the XIX century: he presents the social hierarchy, a special attitude to the military men and service, and the dueling tradition. The dramatic circumstances in which the main character finds himself reflect the moral and social problem of injustice, army brutality, escalating during the reign of Nicholas I. At the beginning of the story, the main character, undertaking the first steps in life, is full of enthusiasm for the future romantic dreams, which the reality subsequently cruelly destroys. The motif of doom refers to the image of the scimitar. The “bad” omen coming from folk mythology becomes prophetic, while the mother’s gift symbolically results in the hero’s death. Conclusion. In the romantic novel “Scimitar”, Pavlov artistically describes social relations and cultural traditions of the Russia of the first half of the XIX century. The themes of corporal punishment and social injustice in the army, which were topical for the 1830s, are reflected in the realistic literature of the early twentieth century.

The character occupies a prominent position in the novel, and is considered the backbone of the story, and it came in the dictionary of terms criticism of the novel in defining it as every participant in the events of the story. As for those who do not participate in the event, they do not belong to the characters but rather part of the description. From Aristotle who did not attach importance to itself and followed him in that with Rob who neglected personality as a self-standing component, and relied on its action in the achievement and promised it the basis of the artistic work. The character in the romantic novel got rid of this Aristotelian view of her. This coincided with the emergence of the bourgeois class in Europe, as it developed from depicting kings and emperors as heroes in novels to dealing with ordinary individuals. Opening words: The main character, Secondary character, And marginal profile, The external dimension, The psychological dimension, The social dimension, Realistic novel.

The article considers the plot-forming potential of the invariant Chekhov pattern, which involves paired characters - the doctor and the investigator. Using the example of several texts ("Perpetuum mobile", "On Official Duty", "Drama on the hunt", "Investigator", "Ward No. 6"), we can see how this template works in different genre contexts (romantic novel, Christmas story, detective story) and how these contexts intersect with each other. Common to consider situational template are the motives of feeling and the vicious circle, which charged a mixed modality and intersect with the motive of theatricality, which, in turn, is associated with professional reflection, combining the figures of doctor, investigator and writer. Special attention is paid to the story "Drama on the Hunt", which is updated as a metatext, in which - against the background of the doubling of the character system - an additional semantic dimension of hunting as a narrative strategy is formed. The final texts of the group under consideration can be considered the stories "On Official Duty" and "Ward No. 6", in which a sense of duty and professional guilt is comprehended through an updated motivational complex.

Various forms of transition in literature and art of the turn of 19th and 20th centuries havent been explored enough. The use of the concept of neo allows to clarify the ideas of neo-romanticism that have developed in modern science. The article analyzes the novel heritage of the Belgian writer Rodenbach as a transitional phenomenon that brings together the writer's tetralogy with romanticism, Parnassus and symbolist French poetry; as well as phenomenon that organically includes Belgian literature in the European space of intertextuality. It is proved that addressing the problems of art, the artist-creator, the beautiful soul, connects Rodenbach with the traditions of Yens romanticism, at a new stage of development of literature generates a transformation of the myth of romanticism. The ideal of art is not subject to devaluation, but the artist, who lives in society, always fails. Indulging in earthly passion, coming into conflict with society and himself, he doesnt keep faith in his beliefs. Real life creates illusions and self-deception, leading the character to disaster. Rodenbach uses a romantic model of mythologization, saturating it with symbolic allusions and signs, on the eve of modernism creates a neo-romantic novel synthesis.

The subject of this article is the key methods of constructing the past applied by Valentin Pikul in chronological novel “The Favorite”: theatricality technique, actualization of male and female beginnings of the main characters, adventurous beginning that includes special chronotope, creation of mystical atmosphere, introduction of the motifs of meeting and partings, and “modernization” of history – the approach of parallel description of the plot of the XVIII century as a storyline of the time of a reader. The goal is to demonstrate the origin of techniques within the depths of Pukil’s writing methods that are in demand by modern cinematography and brought to life in multiple TV series; and how the enlightening content of historical compositions of the XVIII century, particularly the “Memoirs of Catherine the Great” are replaced by the entertaining presentation. The use of cultural-historical, comparative-historical, and structural methods allow determining the main semantic bonds of the novel and genesis of these phenomena, as well as draw parallels with the indicated realias in the modern mass literature. In the course of comprehensive analysis of the novel “The Favorite”, the conclusion is made on the intentional fictionalization of the historical material by V. Pikul: externally –  through convergence of the novel with theatrical staging via using compositional techniques; and internally –  through the techniques of mass literature writing, creation of adventurous chronotope, diminishment of the heroic beginning of historical characters to the behavioral level of typical characters of the romantic novel, introduction of the element of scandal, mystery and adventure. For the first time, the novel is examined through the prism of the time of its creation – the era of post-Perestroika, and the tradition the author leans upon: country-style and “youth” prose. The acquired conclusions directly relate to the modern situation, work of screenwriters on historical material, which was significantly simplified for the mass literature audience.

The author attempts to interpret the best known work of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, which, although created outside the chronological boundaries of Romanticism, grew out of the ideas and needs of that epoch. The aim of the article is to analyse the genre pattern of An Ancient Tale and to indicate various references to Hindu mythology. The work under discussion combines features of a fairy tale, a historical (archaeological) novel, an epic, a syncretic romantic novel and a legend. The Eastern tradition can be traced not only in the frame story, but also in the names of deities and beliefs.

René and Atala by François-René de Chateaubriand and Paul et Virginie by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre each specify a novelistic version of sympathy that arises when stories of forbidden sibling attachment that threaten incest pass between figurative fathers and sons. These texts did not begin as novels, and their internal stories of textual genesis suggest that a particular model of sympathy shapes the transformation of narrative episode into stand-alone novel. In each of these novels, which were popular after the French Revolution’s critique of paternity and its cry of fraternité, siblinghood poses problems of extreme resemblance, a stymied present, and a resistance to the representation and transmission of narrative. Kinship metaphors in scenes of narrative transmission suggest that in order to become independent works of fiction, these extracted episodes rely in part on the accommodated differences, temporal progression, and narrative channels that figurative relationships of paternity offer.

Abstract This article reconsiders the recent turn in political theory to love as a countercapital affect, helping us endure when hope has lost its salience. The article offers the concept of “necromance” to attend to the ways the popular configuration of love as life-giving often overlooks how in the history of slavery and liberal empire love operates as life-taking. Distinct from necromancy, necromance is not a process of reviving the dead but of bringing subjects in ever closer proximity to the dead. Grounded in a reading of W. E. B. Du Bois’s romantic novel The Quest of the Silver Fleece (1911), particularly its vision of a cooperative economy and its response to the evolving meaning of love in American culture at the end of the nineteenth century, necromance is both a structure of feeling and a form of writing. As a resource for activism indebted to the creative powers of melancholic attachments, necromance contests the common conception that in order for grievances to become social movements or collective insurgencies they must be framed to create feelings of outrage, not of grief. By working inside existing conditions of irrevocable loss, necromantic love registers the feeling that the revolution is already here.
