We have developed a SERS magnetic immunoassay method based on the principle of sandwich method for rapid and quantitative detection of IL-6. The developed SERS method has the advantages of high sensitivity and detection time is only 15 min.

AbstractThick epitaxial layers of GaN on SiC and sapphire are grown by using the sublimation sandwich method. It is shown that growth of good quality GaN crystals with the growth rates up to 0.5 mm/hour is possible using this technique. The grown layers have been separated from the seed and free standing GaN crystals up to 15 mm size were obtained.

Purpose. To assess safety and efficacy of temporal manual small incision cataract surgery (SICS) in context to visual outcome, astigmatism, and complications. Methods. This involved sclerocorneal tunnel, capsulotomy and hydrodissection. The incision was made with number 11 disposable surgical blade (costing Indian Rs. 2.50, $0.05). Nucleus extraction was done by phaco-sandwich method with the help of vectis and dialer. Posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was done according to biometric findings. A record of intraoperative and postoperative complications was made. The final postoperative assessment of astigmatism was done with spectacle correction on the 45th day as per the refraction findings. Results. Two thousand eyes were operated by temporal, manual small incision sutureless technique. Uncorrected visual acuity was ≥6/18 in 1636 (81.7%) patients on the first postoperative day, in 1652 (82.6%) patients at 2 weeks, and in 1732 (88.6%) patients at 6 weeks. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥6/18 was achieved in 1868 (93.4%) patients at 6 weeks, with 46 (2.3%) having BCVA <6/60, 24 (1.2%) of whom had preexisting retinal pathology. At 6 weeks, 1876 (93.8%) eyes had with-the-rule and 134 (6.2%) against-the-rule astigmatism (mean 0.7±1.25 D). Iris prolapse was noted in 3 (0.15%), wound leak in 3 (0.15%), and transient corneal edema in 136 (6.8%) eyes. Average surgery time was 6 minutes. Conclusions. Temporal SICS with number 11 disposable surgical blade and nucleus delivery by phaco-sandwich method gave excellent outcome with minimal astigmatism and low complication rate at economic cost.

Abstract By using of the double antibody sandwich method of ELISA, the activities of five cytokines including IL-2, IL-4, IFN-α, IFN-β and TNF-α from the blood serum, liver, intestine and spleen at two developmental stages of Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) were determined to analyze the distribution of the cytokines. The result indicated that five cytokines were found in these four tissues, while their activities were different in different tissues and different ages. The highest activity of IL-2 and IL-4 was all present in blood serum of two different ages. The activity of IFN-α was the highest in blood serum of 1-year-old and in spleen of 2-year-old, respectively. The activity of IFN-β was also highest in blood serum of two different ages. The activity of TNF-α was highest in liver of two different ages. Thus, this study provides convincing reference for blood serum and liver as the most important distribution area of Chinese giant salamander.

The present study investigated the effect of copper and nickel together on ductile iron. Ductile iron was produced by the sandwich method using induction furnace installed at local commercial foundry. Heats without copper & nickel and with copper 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% nickel in combination were made. Tensile samples were machined from Y Block castings. Tensile test was performed to find out the effect of copper and nickel together on tensile strength of ductile iron. Effect of austempering heat treatment was also studied to find out the effect of copper and nickel in combination on tensile strength. The samples were austenitized at 900 oC for one hour and austempered at 270 oC and 370 oC. It was found that with the addition of copper and nickel the tensile strength of ductile iron increased. The tensile strength was more than double when the samples were subjected to austempering heat treatment at 270°C.

Abstract We determine the concentration of proapolipoprotein (proapo) A-I and its ratio with total apolipoprotein (apo) A-I (proapo A-I/total apo A-I) in plasma of patients with liver disease; we used a noncompetitive sandwich method, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The mean (SD) proapo A-I concentrations in patients with decompensated or compensated liver cirrhosis were higher than in normal subjects: 88 (25), 105 (36), and 69 (25) mg/L, respectively. The mean (SD) ratio (expressed as %) for each of these types of liver cirrhosis was also higher than in normal subjects: 10.0 (3.5), 10.2 (3.9), and 4.6 (1.6), respectively. In the patients, the proapo A-I concentration was positively correlated with the concentration of high-density lipoprotein subtype 2 cholesterol (HDL2-C) (r = 0.736), and the proapo A-I/total apo A-I ratio was correlated inversely with the HDL3-C concentration (r = -0.609). The activity of proapo A-I converting enzyme in patients with liver cirrhosis (62 +/- 30 nmol/h per liter) was significantly (P < 0.01) lower than that in normal subjects (172 +/- 55 nmol/h per liter). The increases of the plasma proapo A-I concentration and ratio in patients with liver cirrhosis may be caused by a decreased production of the converting enzyme in the liver. The increase of plasma proapo A-I may thus also affect the circulating HDL subtypes.
