Abstract In this paper, a large number of geotechnical engineering survey data are collected in hilly and plain region along the Yangtze River in Anhui Province. Based on the statistical analysis and calculation of the experimental data of physical and mechanical properties of cohesive soils (the main quaternary soil layers in the area), the correlation between the liquidity index and water content and other physical and mechanical properties indexes are analyzed, and the fitting regression is carried out respectively. The results show that the liquidity index (IL)) and water content (w) are highly correlated with cohesion (C), compression modulus (Es), compression coefficient (α), natural density (ρ), void ratio (e), and the regression equations have high goodness of fit and good fitting effect; In addition, the fitting regression equations of water content, void ratio and natural density are compared with the theoretical calculation formula, it is found that the calculation results are close, which proves that the fitting regression equations are reliable and can be used in engineering practice.

When controlling the mechanical properties and structure of vessels made of carbon structural steels manufactured by hot deformation on rolling and pressing lines (PPL) of machine-building enterprises of Russia, such cooling media as water, I20 industrial mineral oil, air are used. The applied cooling media are able to provide the workpieces with a given structure with a wide range of mechanical properties. However, the cooling media have a number of technological limitations and conditions of the use, non-compliance with which leads to reject. When cooled in oil, the probability of ignition is high; when cooled in water, hardening cracks may form, and air is not always able to provide the required rate and uniformity of heat transfer to the environment. The efficiency of control of physical and mechanical properties and structure of deformed vessels made of 50 steel by cooling in TERMAT polymer aqueous solutions in different concentrations on PPL of the plant of JSC NPO Pribor was studied. The effect of varying the concentration from 2 to 9% of TERMAT polymer on the formation of metal structure, as well as physical and mechanical properties of hot-deformed vessels was studied. The results of testing the strength and plastic characteristics of vessels by destructive and non-destructive control methods are presented. According to the results of physical and mechanical properties, regression equations were obtained with at least 95% reliability of R2, which establish the relationship between the controlled plastic and strength parameters of the vessel metal`s properties. The conducted researches allowed to compare the indicators of the main physical and mechanical properties of steel vessels at the PPL outlet and to propose methods of inhomogeneity control that reduce time and material costs by 5–10% during the tests.

In order to study the influence of modified polypropylene (PP) fiber on the physical and mechanical properties of curing sludge, the same amount of cement and different content of polypropylene fiber were mixed into the sludge. Unconfined compressive strength tests, water content tests and shear strength tests were carried out on different specimens with different curing time. The results show that the sludge curing effect is markedly improved by the addition of the polypropylene fiber. As to the curing sludge with the same curing time, when the content of the polypropylene fiber increases, the unconfined compressive strength and the cohesive strength greatly increase, and the internal frictional angle decreases.

Abstract Bottom ash from EC Gdańsk and dredged material taken from the mouth of The Vistula were mixed to form an engineering material used for dike construction. Mixtures with different bottom ash content were tested in laboratory to determine its basic physical and mechanical properties. The optimum bottom ash-dredged material mixture, built in the corps of the test dike, contains 70% of ash. The optimum bottom ash content in the mixture was chosen taking into account high internal friction angle, good compaction and reduced filtration coefficient. The maximum dry density of the mixtures was measured in Proctor test for the mixtures formed in laboratory and on samples taken from the test dike. Minimum and maximum void ratio were also determined.

A similarity criteria were reveled to determine the dependence of maximum pressure of the tractor wheel on the soil on the basis of the use of similarity theory. Each similarity criterion includes several parameters, characterizing the tractor, its propeller and physical and mechanical properties of the soil. The similarity criteria is taken as factors in the multivariate experiment. Multifactorial experimental studies were planned and carried out. We used Statistics Toolbox subsystem of Matlab computer mathematics system for processing the results of experiments. As a result of statistical processing of the experimental data by the equation we obtained a dependence of maximum pressure of the tractor wheel on the soil from tractor parameters, and physical and mechanical properties of the soil. Statistical data on the equations, such as - multiple correlation coefficient, Fisher’s criterion, Student’s criterion, indicate the significance of equations of the experiments variants, as well as the significance of the coefficients of the regression equations.

The paper presents a complex of laboratory and theoretical studies of physical and mechanical properties in centrifuged concrete while using samples of sectoral cross-section which are cut in layers from a finished product. A post made of concrete having B40 grade for compression strength and manufactured while using centrifugation with the help of РТЦ-5 machine. Assessment of heterogeneity across section thickness has been carried out by visual determination of composition changes in cross section, determination of strength, density of the obtained concrete samples, and water content over cross section of concrete mix. According to the results of a visual study on composition of a concrete structure it has been revealed that 1/8 part of the structure (from an inner surface) does not have a large aggregate. Later, as it moves to periphery, there is an increase in coarse aggregate and a decrease in size and number of cells between grains of gravel. An analysis of experimental data has shown that properties of the centrifuged concrete in samples being sawn in layers change significantly: density of concrete in samples of an inner layer is lower by 8 % than in samples of an outer layer, and compressive strength of concrete – by 34 %, water content of concrete mixture of samples of the inner layer has turned out to be by 43 % higher than in samples of the outer layer. Approximating curves showing regularities of changes in density, concrete strength, water content of concrete mixture over thickness have been constructed in the paper. Linear and exponential equations have been obtained that describe changes in physical and mechanical properties of centrifuged concrete over section depending on structure properties as a whole, which, taking into account the obtained correction factors k1 and k2, can be used with an acceptable level of confidence in practical calculations of centrifuged concrete structures. Relationship between strength of centrifuged concrete varying over cross section and action of a centrifugal force of inertia has been revealed in the paper. An equation has been obtained that relates the strength of centrifuged concrete to its density. Analysis of the research results makes it possible to assert that the main source of loading perception in centrifuged concrete structures is outer layers.

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between clay minerals (kaolinite and illite) and rock properties of the claystone, including both mechanical (cohesion, friction angle, stress, and strain) and physical properties (natural water content, void ratio, and wet density), belonging to Warukin Formation of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Mineralogical characteristics of these rocks were studied using petrological and X-ray diffraction techniques, whereas the mechanical and physical properties were tested by conducting uniaxial and triaxial tests. Relationship among the variables was determined using correlation coefficients. It was observed that the mineralogy of the rocks pose strong constraints on their engineering properties. The results showed that an increase in illite content decreases cohesion, friction angle, strength, and safety factor; and increases natural moisture content, void ratio, and wet density. Although illite content of these rocks was just about 10.8% of the total minerals, it has significantly contributed to the modification of physical and mechanical properties. In contrast, kaolinite did not have a significant impact; since the correlation between various parameters was significantly low (correlation coefficient was much less, <0.3). Therefore while selecting the materials for geotechnical engineering applications, illite emerges as a safer alternative to kaolinite, especially when its concentration is less than 10.8% of the total rock mass.

Purpose. To establish mathematical models for the adaptation of materials under conditions of activation of a metastable structural-phase state of quasi-dissipative tribosystems. Determination and substantiation of factors for planning an active experiment due to which it is possible to create mathematical models of stable forecasts for increasing the wear resistance of materials. Research methods. When conducting the experiments, a priori data were used in combination with our own scientific developments of mathematical models of the dependences of the influence of the chemical composition of alloys during manual and automatic electric arc surfacing on the physical and mechanical properties of the surface layer of the material, which is destroyed under tribosystem conditions. It was decided to use mathematical planning of research on the basis of an active experiment with the creation of models for the numerical description of the mathematical expectation in the form of regression equations. Obtained results. On the basis of theoretical and practical scientific research with planning a passive and active experiment, a set of relevant knowledge has been obtained, which makes it possible to determine the main criterion requirements for the sensitivity of deposited steels and alloys to adaptation under the action of external mechanical and energy influences and allows to mathematically describe the characteristics of the alloy and provide a numerical estimate of the correlation parameters among themselves. On the basis of the theory of scientific mathematical planning of the experiment, a set of corresponding experiments was carried out, which made it possible to build spatial graphic models. Scientific novelty. For the first time, theoretical and practical scientific research is presented with the reproduction of a systemic multivariate analysis of the parameters of mathematical models and processes leading to the martensitic ( γ → α ) transformation and determines the substantiation of the chemical composition of the deposited materials to increase fracture resistance under conditions of quasi-dissipative and dissipative tribosystems. Practical meaning. The obtained results of the above studies allow, within the framework of technical and technological accuracy, which is necessary within the framework of practical engineering forecasts, to determine the physical and mechanical properties of wear-resistant deposited alloys under conditions of quasi-dissipative and dissipative tribosystems.

For paddy-upland rotation areas in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the paddy soil has undesired physico-mechanical properties of tillage during the dry season. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of soil bulk density and moisture content on the physico-mechanical properties of paddy soil in the plough layer. The bulk density and moisture content were selected as experimental factors, and the cohesion, tangential adhesion, plasticity index, and soil swelling rate were chosen as experimental indices from physico-mechanical properties of paddy soil in the plough layer. The experimental factors were quantitatively analyzed to explore the change characteristics of the physico-mechanical properties of paddy soil in the plough layer. Conclusions were obtained that show that when the bulk density increased in the range of 1 to 1.6 g·cm−3, the cohesion, tangential adhesion, plasticity index, and swelling rate of paddy soil increased in different degrees. Between 15% and 35% moisture content, the cohesion increased first and then decreased with the increase of moisture content, while the peak cohesion value occurred at the moisture content of 20%. Moisture content was positively correlated with tangential adhesion and negatively correlated with soil swelling rate. This study provides a reference for the regulation of paddy soil tillability in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin.
