Abstract Shared space street (3S) is an urban design concept applied by eliminating physical barriers and markers on road space to create uncertainty that will drive motorists to reduce vehicle speed and be more tolerant with other road users. The implementation of 3S contributes to the environmental quality through an emphasis on reducing motorized vehicles, improving people’s habits to walk and use public transportation. This study aims to understand the public’s perspectives about the implementation of 3S as a new concept for an old downtown area in Banda Aceh. This study further examines whether familiarity with the area affects the acceptance of 3S, type of expected facility needs, and confidence of 3S impact to reduce congestion. The study uses the qualitative method (interviews) for key informants and quantitative (online surveys) for the public. The results show that although 3S is a new concept for the area, there is a high level of acceptance from the public. The results also show that frequency of visits does not significantly affect the acceptance, need for facilities, or view on impact to congestion. However, a variety of facility requirements was revealed. It is also found that the combination of several methods in data collection and communicating the proposed design is more effective for the implementation of new urban design innovation.

ObjectivesMany suicides take place in public locations, usually involving jumping from high places or use of transport networks. Previous research has largely focused on the effectiveness of physical barriers at frequently used locations. There have been no studies of human intervention to prevent suicides in public places. The aim of this study was to identify the core components of an effective intervention by a member of the public.Design and methodsWe conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with people who have either been prevented by a stranger from taking their own life in a public location (n=12) or intervened to prevent a stranger from taking their own life in a public location (n=21). Collectively, the two groups narrated 50 incidents of suicide rescue. We analysed interview transcripts using inductive thematic analysis.ResultsSuicidal people typically displayed no visible distress, describing themselves as being dissociated or ‘in a bubble’. Intervention was seen to involve three main tasks: ‘bursting the bubble’ (reconnecting with self, others and everyday world); moving to a safer location, and summoning help. We show how interveners accomplished these tasks in a range of ways, using both verbal and non-verbal communication and different degrees of restraint.ConclusionsThis is the first empirical study to examine the role of passing strangers in preventing suicides in public places. It shows that no specialist skills are needed. Interveners were ordinary people, distinguished only by a high level of social awareness, combined with a readiness for social action. The findings also suggest that people do not need a script and should not be afraid of saying ‘the wrong thing.’ What interveners said was much less important than how they made the suicidal person feel, namely safe, connected and validated (‘I matter’). Interveners did this simply by being themselves, responding with authenticity, calmness and compassion. Members of the public need to be encouraged to recognise and reach out to those who may be at risk of suicide in public locations, but should be prepared for a prolonged and intense encounter that may leave them with troubling emotions.

The road space is not solely reserved for the public interest. In some examples can also be used exclusively for the residents of a region that have been designed from the beginning or through some post-occupancy adjustments. In the case of the campus of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) area, there are road spaces that become public facilities that pushing the campus authority to create access modifications (by closing or fencing) for the security and/or privacy purposes. How much the level of security and privacy that is obtained, in this paper were analyzed using space syntax. Through its ability to analyze the quality of space connectedness, space syntax can be used to measure the level of security and privacy refers to a benchmark proposed by Reis (2003) uses the value of the integration space. Integration of road space that is worth the low/weak (RA and RRA = 1 or more) has a low level of security but more private. While the high-value/strong integration (RA close to 0 and RRA = 0.4 to 0.6) have a high level of security but less privacy. Through the obtained analysis; a large enough degree of privacy is achieved, especially in the area of Central Office/Rectorate Building and surrounding areas, however, it become unsafe due to the activity-deserted road space situation and lack of supervision.

<span><em>Shared space street design is a concept that eliminates the segregation and physical marker of the path difference of a street corridor, creating uncertainty that will make the rider reduce the speed of his vehicle, those required to be more tolerant with other users. Aims to reduce the dominance of vehicles by sharing road space between pedestrians, non-motorized vehicles and motor vehicles, but pedestrians are a primary priority. The existing condition of Pemuda street corridor, which is a commercial corridor in Magelang city, shows that the dominance of existing motor vehicles resulted in the movement of pedestrians from the western sidewalk to the eastern sidewalks are limited, resulting in a gap in the number of pedestrians on each sidewalk. Since 2011 until now Pemuda street Corridor has sidewalks on the eastern which concept is to be in one lane with non-motorized lanes (pedicabs, bicycles, carts etc.), so it has a width of up to 5 meters. It shows the characteristics that lead to the concept of shared space street. The purpose of this research is to find the factors that can influence the development of shared space street concept in order to solve the problems that arise. The research method used is qualitative deductive method. This research found that the factors that influence the development of shared space street in Pemuda street are comfort, connectivity, diversity, livability, and identity</em></span>

This chapter presents the results of the exploratory study regarding the profile of local residents and visitors of the Historical Villages of Portugal Network (nHVP). This network integrates 12 villages located in low density territories in the center of Portugal. It is important to conduct this study in order to conceive strategies and policies that will contribute to reversing the desertification tendency and to retaining resources and surpluses that would otherwise leave the region. The authors concluded that the local residents present a medium/high level of satisfaction in terms of the impact of tourism in their villages and also with the association of their village with the nHVP brand. However, the local residents' participation in the activities and touristic events is low, which is in part due to the high age of most local residents. Regarding the visitors of the nHVP, they are generally satisfied or very satisfied with several points. The lowest level of satisfaction relates to the public transportation, the communication networks, and the medical care available in the territory.

Abstract: Yogyakarta has several traditional markets, one of which is Beringharjo. This market has been long established in conjunction with the construction of the Sultan Palace and became the economic center in the city of Yogyakarta. Beringharjo located on Jenderal Ahmad Yani street which is the trade area. The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand the elements of the spatial structure of Yogyakarta which support functions as well as to understand and decipher the links between these elements in creating an environment that supports the function of Beringharjo market. Object of observation is a function of the mass and shape of the building is to be around Beringharjo, pedestrian and vehicle lanes to be around Beringharjo Traditional Market, and the types of public transportation are located around Beringharjo Traditional Market. The method used is the observation, and literature. Figure ground theory is used to analyze the function and mass building around Beringharjo. Linkage theory is used to classify characters based on the function and activity, whereas the comparison between theory building height and street width to analyze the convenience of road space for pedestrians. The results of this study are character functions and activities along Jendral Ahmad Yani street can be divided into three segments, that is opening, core and cover. Based on the distribution of the three segments, figure ground analysis that shows the shape and composition of mass transportation lines shows that the public transportation network, namely the Trans Jogja stop there on the third segment. The existence of Trans Jogja buses as public transportation support functions and activities that take place on Jendral Ahmad Yani street, who also supports the sustainability of activities in Beringharjo. Keywords: market, function, form, pedestrian, vehicle, transportationAbstrak: Kota Yogyakarta memiliki beberapa pasar tradisional, salah satunya adalah Pasar Beringharjo. Due to its low fares, public bus transportation as a means of urban road mobility is a popular choice, particularly among city inhabitants. However, owing to its high level of crowdedness, it poses a greater risk of security and safety, particularly during peak hours. Moreover, passengers have continued to voice their dissatisfaction about the services offered, as well as the criminality that occurs in the station and on the bus. The problem is exacerbated in developing countries due to increased travel demand and a lack of appropriate and integrated solutions. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to evaluate commuters' perceptions of their concerns about using public bus transportation in the city, with an emphasis on security and safety in bus operations. A questionnaire survey was used to obtain data from 500 users in the city for the study. Using the SPSS software, the data was analyzed. To find out what they think, a descriptive analysis was used. Overcrowding of buses, personal insecurity, and infrequent bus service are the three biggest concerns in using public bus transportation in the city, according to the results. Furthermore, most of the respondents were concerned about crime; specifically, pickpockets, inappropriate touching, and disrespectful language of drivers and conductors are the three top types of crime that concern passengers who use public bus transportation in the city. Additionally, most people felt more insecure while riding the bus and getting on/off the bus, particularly in the evening and between 9:00 and 12:00 p.m. local time. Thus, it is advised that the Addis Ababa City Transport Authority, the Public Bus Transport Enterprise, and other interested parties place a strong emphasis on security and safety when providing public transportation in the city. Furthermore, it is critical to perform regular victim surveys of passengers (as well as operators) to establish whether they have been criminally victimized on the bus system and by what type of crime. Equally important, regularly assess the likely usefulness of new crime prevention measures for reducing bus-related offenses and prepare an annual bus crime reduction strategy.

This paper concerns an analysis regarding the performance of X-ray equipment as well as the radiological safety in veterinary facilities. Data were collected from 380 X-ray veterinary facilities countrywide during the on-site regulatory inspections carried out by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission. The analysis of the results shows that the majority of the veterinary radiographic systems perform within the acceptable limits; moreover, the design and shielding of X-ray rooms as well as the applied procedures ensure a high level of radiological safety for the practitioners, operators and the members of the public. An issue that requires specific attention in the optimization process for the proper implementation of veterinary radiology practices in terms of radiological safety is the continuous training of the personnel. The above findings and the regulatory experience gained were valuable decision-making elements regarding the type of the regulatory control of veterinary radiology practices in the new radiation protection framework.

In the completion of my practicum at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) this summer, I worked to develop a surveillance knowledge product to support the national surveillance of developmental disorders. This project used Statistics Canada’s 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability to investigate the burden of developmental disorders in Canada. Developmental disorders are conditions with onset in the developmental period. They are associated with developmental deficits and impairments of personal, social, academic, and occupational function. The project objectives are to estimate the prevalence of developmental disorders in Canadians 15 years of age or older, overall and by age and sex, as well as report on the age of diagnosis, disability severity, and disability co-occurrence in those with developmental disorders. The majority of the analysis has been completed and preliminary results completed, which cannot be released prior to PHAC publication. Although not highly prevalent, developmental disorders are associated with a high level of disability in young Canadians. Early detection and interventions have been shown to improve health and social outcomes among affected individuals. Understanding the burden of developmental disorders in Canada is essential to the development of public health policies and services.

Subject. The article deals with the analysis of suppliers in the public procurement system based on reasonable prequalification parameters. Objectives. The aim is to test the hypothesis about strong reputation characteristics of the winners in the public procurement system and develop a methodology for assessing the reputation of suppliers for prequalification purposes. Methods. We employ general scientific principles and methods of research, like abstraction, generalization of approaches used by domestic and foreign authors for prequalification and assessment of reputation of public procurement participants. Results. To test the hypothesis, we calculated four groups of indicators on corporate, financial, market, and social components of reputation. The methodology was tested on the data obtained from SPARK-Interfax and SPARK-Marketing information resources. Conclusions. The study revealed that not all reputational characteristics of public procurement winners can be regarded as high level. In terms of the corporate component, it is the low level of share capital, indicating the mistrust on the part of owners and their reluctance to invest in the business, and the low percentage of non-current assets. In terms of the market component, it is a low sales growth rate, as well as low return on sales. As to the financial component, it is a low capitalization of winners, low share of long-term debt capital and low credit limit. With respect to the social component, it is a below-average tax burden.
